Review Strawberry Fare - Christchurch

Janelle McNeil
Impeccable food, incredible service, and a good selection of drinks. I love coming here for my birthday and this is the 5th year in a row for me! This time I brought my partner, my nephew, and a best friend. Between us all we ordered a variety of things and there were no complaints. Our waiter was amazing, really elevated the whole experience to another level, and all the staff were wonderful and pleasant throughout. I couldn't have had a better birthday dinner elsewhere. Highly recommend!

Beautiful chilly morning. The ladies at Strawberry Fare were outstanding, they were friendly and helpful. We were visiting from the US. This was a delicious meal. We sat on the sunny side. Cannot wait to visit again and try other menu items. Ordered the following Poached Eggs with Thyme potatoes - tomato chutney ties it all. Enjoyed this. Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon - Foccacia & avocado salsa bring this combination together. Added a side of crispy Streaky Bacon. Almond, Berry and coconut hotcakes - Wow! Coconut whip, piled high with berries on top of hotcakes. Try them!

Absolutely fabulous, can't fault anything here. Mouth watering steak the best ever, decadent dessert mmm and cocktail was divine. Photos are Turkey Salad,Salted Caramel Choc Gaeaux;Toblerone cocktail,Dreamy Cheesecake and Beef fillet.Definately 10/10.Great Service.

Have and will continue to dine here. Excellent food and dessert - never take the hazelnut torte off the menu! Always feels high end dining.

Desserts great! Really outstanding. Personally not a fan of the duck hash dish and wouldn’t order it again. The flavors and textures just weren’t special. On the soggy side. Felt slightly like an afterthought dish, some shredded left over duck mixed into mash potato. Duck is usually a real treat but it was underwhelming. Side salad was lovely though. Would recommend all wait staff to try the duck hash for themselves.

Both the food and the service was outstanding. We were seated around 4:45pm and had our main out by around 5:05pm. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was amazing and presented so beautifully. Would definitely highly recommend!!!

Came with a friend for breakfast. Cinnamon roll French toast was absolutely fabulous. Chocolate mousse was very decadent and a real treat for any chocolate lover. Espresso martini was great, the only espresso martini I've ever actually enjoyed the taste of. We came early in the morning on a Wednesday so it was very quiet which was lovely. Pleasant view from our window table. Staff were very nice. Highly recommend.

Visited recently for dinner. Excellent service, but the meal itself was a little hit or miss. As my entree, I ordered the mushroom soup which was tasty but surprisingly heavy and a little bit heavy handed with the pepper. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse. The mousse itself was fine, but the star of that dish was the ice cream in the thin biscuit. Those were something special. I’d recommend selling the ice cream and the biscuit as a separate lighter dessert option. Those two alone with the fresh mint would be a perfect dessert.
Rhea
Highly recommend the eye fillet. Also can't get enough of the garlic butter that came with the baguette for entree. Very friendly staff and service was excellent. You can see a bit of Hagley park from the restaurant but I am not a fan of the stairs to get there. There are seats on the ground floor too but only very limited.

We each ordered a light dinner and a dessert, since the desserts are quite generous. The food was incredible. Also had very nice cocktails. Service was quick and friendly. Absolutely perfect on all fronts.

Had heard lots of reports about how good strawberry fare was but I was disappointed. My meal turned up but it was cold. Spoke to waiter and complained. He took my meal away and then transferred meal onto a hot plate. The waiter brought it back and plate was so hot that you couldn’t touch it . Started to eat it again but it was still not hot. I did not complain again because it would have meant that every one else would have finished their meal and I would have been eating on my own. So disappointed and spoilt our evening.

really good. the best restaurant in NZ

Delicious dessert plates! Love the fresh taste cream along with the chocolate, sweet but not heavy. Two plates are a bit too much for two, but we managed to finish them all. Absolutely a great place to stay for afternoon chill out.

Couldn't have asked for a better end to the Birthday celebrations.....

Strawberry Fare is everything that a good fine dinning restaurants needs to have, beautiful ambience (though, can get a bit noisy but who cares) , top notch hospitality, well stocked alcohol, amazing food, better than the best desserts.

Everything that we ordered was the highlight of the day. Beef was cooked to perfection, Prawns were perfectly flavored, the desserts had the right balance of sweetness and acidity.

Decent choice for Vegetarians

A Must

What an amazing meal. Went for a work function. Main meal was good but the star of the night was the desserts. They looked like pieces of art.

I went here for dinner on a busy Friday night and it was great! I had the Caesar salad for my main as I was saving myself for dessert! The salad was delicious! The other diners I was with ordered the fillet steak. One had asked for medium, and when it came out it was too rare for her, and despite her eating other food on her plate before realizing it wasn't cooked enough for her, the kitchen fully replaced her order, no questions asked and within 5 minutes she had a brand new meal in front of her with a perfectly cooked steak - fantastic service! I had the gateaux dessert and would highly recommend :)

After visiting Christchurch a million times, I eventually got to Strawberry Fare, made it for brekkie. Very quiet the morning we visited but it didn't disappoint. I had the duck hash thingy, never had duck for breakfast before but this dish was delicious. Washed down with a pretty decent coffee. The brekkie menu didn't have many options that would make me rush back but the lunch menu looked pretty interesting.

It was amazing dessert !! All staffs are friendly and nice :) We ordered special tasting so can try each dessert little bit. It was worth to try and brilliant !! don't know which words should use for description !! Highly recommended !!

Came here for breakfast. Great atmosphere, good vibes and delicious food. We got the Poached berries, creme fraiche, maple syrup it was quite rich but definitely good for your soul. Would love to go back there again.

We ordered lamb and duck. The food tastes bitter and not good. I booked a table for two but we are settled at a table for four. The air conditioner is above my head and it is freezing. The service of waitress was not satisfying. The experience is absolutely one of the worst thing and ruin the last day of 2017.So disappointed.
FoodieGirl
Always my favourite place for dessert. Loved and tried all the dessert. Chocolate pate crunch is still my fave. Good atmosphere. Parking can be a problem during busy time.

Try the chocolate and raspberry cake with raspberry coulis, you won't regret it! Quite possibly the best chocolate cake I've had in my life!
Marcia3939
Been having desserts here since 1989 when I was living in Christchurch. Though the desserts menu has reduced, the quality of dessert is still as good as before. Well done.
Yas Ali
I wouldn't really recommend this place for their mains - because lets be real you can have the same mains at any other restaurant for less than what Strawberry Fare charge you. In saying that I still give them 4 stars because the service is good and the desserts (which most of us actually go for) are fabulous! It's a cute idea to go here with your partner after having dinner at home or somewhere else or even with your friends if you share a sweet tooth.
Helena Smith
The service was good, but that is where the positive aspects end. The place has really let itself go with respect to it's food. Very one dimensional and overpriced. Awful ambiance- tried to have a romantic dinner and had to practically yell to have a conversation. Disappointing experience, would not recommend.
Sarah Mcshane
I had the duck confit hash and a flat white. The duck had an orange after taste which I really wasn't a fan of and the flat white tasted sour towards the end. I had the berry delicious dessert though and that saved it to be honest as it was amazing 👌 staff were helpful too
Sj
I've only been there for dessert! It's the best place to go if you want good dessert. Pricey but worth it. Can get quite busy! I always go for the ultimate chocolate dessert it's divine😁

Strawberry fare has a reputation for great deserts. Unfortunately we went there for breakfast and were served the most underwhelming breakfasts from a very limited menu.
There was nothing wrong with the staff or our orders, just zero incentive to return and left feeling somewhat ripped off as going out for breakfast is an occasional treat for us.
Gigi Kel
Overpriced for average desserts. For those prices I would expect fine dining quality and some entremets, etc. The only reason it gets two stars is because the service was okay. Won't come back.

If you've got a sweet tooth then this is your heaven. Strawberry Fare always goes down a treat with friends and family. I visited this charming spot on Sunday afternoon with a girl friend before she jetted back to France for the summer. Now, we absolutely ADORE sweetness. I swear if it was a person we'd fight over who got to marry him. We popped in around 3pm, there was no one in the downstairs sitting area to greet us unfortunately just a table of dirty dishes. Not the best of impressions however we made our way to the upper level and grabbed a table in the window with a view overlooking Bealey Ave and Hagley Park.

The waitress who looked after us was super friendly, helpful and even let Miss France change her vegan dessert into a caramel drenched heart attack which kept her very happy. I opted for the Figgy Pear and Ginger Pud which turned out to be a huge, comfy slice of nana's baking with a kick of ginger and whole pears and figs baked right into it. My friend grabbed the Tropical Heat, also off their Warm Desserts menu. This had the beautiful nutty texture of coconut which contrasted perfectly with the roasted pineapple. My friend swapped the lime sorbet for banana ice cream which really played up the creamy-dreamy appeal.

It was a lot quieter than I expected it to be with only us and three other tables. If you like a relaxed atmosphere then Strawberry Fare on a Sunday afternoon is for you. Natural light from the enormous windows floods the space making it feel light and fluffy like a soufflé. The only thing I wish Strawberry Fare had was an outside courtyard on the second floor because there's nothing better than eating delicious food alfresco.

The best desert i have eaten in New Zealand. Lemon cheesecake is just marvellous😍. The restaurant seems a bit crowded. But the desert makes it worth the visit.
Bob Richards
Nice dessert and the mains were okay, the dessert was overpriced, $18 for slice of chocolate cake with a teaspoon of ice cream that felt like i could get from a cafe , i used to really love this place when i was younger when they were in the city, it was small and quirky but it just feels really plain now and in need of a good re-fit

Probably the best dessert place in Christchurch! Reasonably priced for the size and quality of dessert. Sticky date, bread and butter pudding, creme brulee and chocolate crunch were all really good.
Free Trade Winds
Cor it's been a long while, last time I was here it was still in Peterborough Street. That building's long gone. Mind you most of the street / inner city is.

It's the same simple food, done well and fully priced.
Amy @ My Dining Journey
As our last meal in Christchurch before we check in to our evening flight, we decided to have a quick feed at Strawberry Fare. I never got the chance to try their sister restaurant in Wellington which was famous for their desserts, so the three of us decided to satisfy our sweet tooth and have dessert instead of dinner while one of us ordered a proper main.

The dishes we ordered:

Prawn Linguine - Perfectly seasoned pasta dish with ample king prawns.

Chocolate Pate Crunch - Rich chocolate pate with a creamy salted caramel ice cream with crispy tuille and caramel sauce.

Tropical Heat - Warm coconut, feijoa and pineapple cake with coconut lime sorbet and roasted pineapple. The cake was a tad too sweet for my taste. The coconut lime sorbet was light and refreshing.

Caramel and Hazelnut Torte - served with vanilla bean ice cream and candied hazelnuts.

Quite pleased with the variety of desserts on the menu and we enjoyed all the dishes that we ordered. However, nothing seemed to scream out to us. Staff were efficient and friendly and the restaurant has very limited onsite parking.

I have been there for at lease 5 times. Awesome service and great deserts as always! Tried the chef deserts every time! Very impressive experience!

Visited for dessert, and ordered chefs pick and was very happy with service.
Food was great, very sweet but sauce balanced everything.

EDIT: I have finally made my way there for dinner, three friends joined me and we all enjoyed 4 different meals (what a way to try everything, score!).. I ordered the fish of the day (salmon) -the fish was cooked very well with the perfect amount of mash. My favourite dish wasn't my own, but I throughly enjoyed the braised slow cooked lamb. That is a must try if you ever visit Strawberry Fare... Steak was cooked med rare and was a little above average, as was the caesar salad as expected.

Managed to squeeze in dessert with a total of 6 people (hooray more testers!), I can't recall the name of the cake, it was raspberry with white chocolate and was very dense- definitely needed that green tea on the side for this one.

Summary: Strawberry fare has a pleasant atmosphere, great selections for dinner & good portions of dessert

Till next time!

Modern diner that has apparently been relocated in recent years, Strawberry Fare is a bustling eatery that sub-specialises in desserts.

The Kokoda citrus and coconut milk-cured fish was very good. A pasta dish based around a prawn and tomato sauce and a blue-steak cooked as requested were both delicious. We shared a dessert tasting plate that let three of us get a feeling for what the other desserts were like, and it certainly was a lovely experience.

Most of the seating is upstairs, offering very pleasant views over the trees toward Hagley Park. Tables are adequately spaced giving a sufficient degree of personal space. Gets very busy even during the week, so would certainly recommend booking over the weekend to avoid waiting on being turned away.

Great place for more standard European fare, the dessert menu was even larger than the rest, and what came out from the kitchen looked amazing.

We went here for a brunch yesterday, after all that hype and recommendations from our friends..
We liked the ambience-it was good and relaxing.
Staff was kind and service was good..

We ordered our favorites- pancakes and french toast, but soon realized that we have had better!Hence, the food did not stand out for us.. We had high expectations from the hype that was created

Overall I would rate this between 3.5-4

Wonderful restaurant! Ideal for special occasions. I have been here for lunch, dinner and desserts. Enjoyed it every single time! Definitely recommend 👍👍👍

Haven't been here for a really long time. We were lucky to find a table in the busy Saturday night. The people are very nice and service is really good. Nothing has changed. The desserts are delicious. The ultimate chocolate brownie one is full of different kinds of chocolate flavour that is perfect for chocolate lover. We enjoyed it very much.

Excellent food and service.
We tried the fish and slow cooked lamb parpadelle. The salmon cooed wroth beatific crisp skin and melted in my mouth. The lamb was also extraordinarily tasty.
Best of all though is the desert selection and many folk just come to enjoy those with a coffee.

One of the first thing anyone should know about Strawberry Fare is that parking is not an easy achievement. Your best bet is to park somewhere in the distance and hope you can still walk back after having had a sugar assault on your body.

The main dining area for Strawberry Fare is upstairs and from there, you get a view of some cars ... but not just any cars, they are moving cars along Bealey Ave. Of course there is the fact that Bealey also has trees lined along the middle, so you see some of that too. There are dining tables downstairs and from there your view is people who didn't realise how bad the parking is as they sit and decide whether or not to park in the "Disability" parking.

The place is almost sterile looking. Very white with white walls, white tables, white plates, white people ... anyway, it is all very clean looking. Which is not a bad thing, it doesn't offend your senses, but it is very ho hum as well.

Service was impeccable as we were shown to our table. We happened to spot friends sitting not far from us, so did our best to hide from them as well.

Breakfast was pretty good. I did the bacon a bit too salty but overall, good portion size, it looked fantastic on the plate and also looked delicious. I'm not a sugar fan so I avoided anything else beyond that, but the sweets do look amazing.

Generally pretty good and I would return if not for the parking issue.

Always been a keen foodie on this place, they have a really high attention to detail on all of their meals, although price is again slightly high but is still acceptable. Would recommend to all.

Definitely my favourite dinner and dessert place. The chocolates plate is my favourite! The pillow dessert just melts in your mouth is taste like a cloud! Delicious to a tee!

This place is located in a phenomenal location. The food is outstanding, especially the dessert. The ambience is great and service is smooth and courteous. Will go again.

Strawberry Fare is a restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but for me it has always been the dessert place everyone goes to late at night. Reservations are high recommended, especially if you wanted a seat at the 'normal' meal hours. After the earthquakes, Strawberry Fare has moved to a new site near Hagley Park, and its faithful sweet taste bud fans have followed. K and K were passing through Christchurch and had only a few moments to catch up. Why not over some of our famous desserts? Caramel and hazelnut torte was wonderfully warm and soft, and its almost over sweetness was balanced by the cool vanilla ice cream and scattered blueberries. The presentation is top notch, and the experience is a true sweet affair. Strawberry Fare 19 Bealey Ave, Christchurch 8014

Worth the wait!. There was a bit of a wait, but the food was absolutely divine! huge portions, so we had no room for dessert... only issue was that our waitress seemed a bit confused, maybe she was new? it took her a while to grab us menus and when we did receive them they were dessert menus! Just a minor fault - I would happily go back!

This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Christchurch. It is the perfect spot for all occasions: anniversary, Sunday brunch, casual afternoon catch-up with a friend, drinks and especially dessert! The second story seems to attract a little bit of a nicer-dressed crowd while the lower level seems to be for those who just rolled out of bed or came from a workout. I wouldn't come here in anything less than a nice pair of jeans, at least. Strawberry Fare prides itself on serving local, fresh and organic food whenever possible, so you won't find fresher food anywhere else.

For breakfast I have tried the french toast (which I think is their best breakfast item), the BET (which just seemed plain, though the flavors are nice), the blueberry pancakes which are delicious and looks like the batter is poured over a scoop of large blueberries on the skillet. The Corn and Capsicum Fritters and Salmon Deluxe were huge favorites with my friends.

For lunch I enjoyed the bruschetta and the summer chicken salad. The bruschetta is fresh and the summer salad is refreshing but also has large pieces of asparagus.

For dessert I absolutely recommend the Sunken Chocolate Cake. It is gluten free and vegan, but you would never know. It is also beautifully decorated with thin, frozen honey drizzle. The little girls I was with devoured their ice cream sundaes (but who doesn't love ice cream?)

The cool thing about Strawberry Fare though is their baking school! You can take classes at the restaurant to learn to bake (almost) as good as their chefs. This is definietly an experience everyone must do! If you haven't been to Strawberry Fare, put it next on your list - you'll be glad you did!

Located in such a beautiful place, it does terrible in the food. I just don't understand how it has got the fame for desserts... Maybe it is because it does offer a lot of choices for desserts. But quantity does not equal to quality. Not to mention the tasteless mains.

I guess I can totally understand that when dining out some people just want a beautiful place for a date, food is not a necessity.

Been back there twice just for the tasting dessert plate. The quality of the desserts was good. The texture was all very beautiful. The problem was the taste itself. And the combination of the three things on the plate confused me. What did the chef want to achieve? It is just embarrassing to say that it was probably the first time I could not finish all the dessert on a plate.
Brad Sherry
This place is all about the desserts, not quite but thats why I went and I was not disappointed. Main menu look good but thats not what we were after great plates of sweet stuff to suit everybody. Décor needs attention but apart from that yum.

Overpriced for what it is. I went there for breakfast today with a friend and was underwhelmed by the very basic menu and food, We started with being given one weekend brunch and one dirty regular breakfast menu (it was a Wednesday) which caused some confusion at our table. The duty manager noticed and quickly replaced our menus with the correct (and clean!) ones. From there I ordered coffee and muesli ($16 worth!) and my friend had blueberry pancakes.
I got exactly one cup of muesli, some fresh fruit (mostly banana, strawberry, kiwifruit, pineapple and a few grapes) and a little jar of yogurt and a milk jug. The muesli itself was very underwhelming and kind of soggy. Pretty disappointed by my plate.
My friend got 2 blueberry pancakes, banana, a strawberry and some very crispy looking bacon. She only made it through one pancake. Her exact words were "it tastes like it came out of a box".
An expensive mistake to make, will not be returning.

Fine, rich desserts, albeit a sadly limited menu. The frustrating parking situation really puts a damper on the experience overall. With the restaurant sharing its space with a motel, almost without fail there will be no parking spaces available.

The service at Strawberry Fare is consistently average, however the staff never seem to be interested in how you are doing after you have received your food which is disappointing from a customer service perspective.

If you can get a space upstairs the atmosphere is lovely. If you are unlucky enough to be shunted at the bottom of the stairs the experience is reminiscent of Harry Potter's living situation prior to discovering Hogwarts; dark and uncomfortable.
Dave Kimber
While the desserts here are nice, there are a few issues with this restaurant. For starters, parking is dismal. There are about 6 parks which is absurd for such a big restaurant. I have had to awkwardly reverse out and park in Burger King down the street on several occasions. If you are lucky enough to get a table upstairs it is lovely, especially by the window overlooking the park and river. The last couple of times I have had to sit at the overflow tables downstairs, which feels isolated and less cosy. It's a shame the earthquake forced Strawberry Fare out of their fantastic location on Peterborough Street.

I did like my dessert; I had the chocolate orange mousse cake with a tuile. The flavours were strong and it was beautifully presented. The dessert did seem a little too frozen -- I could feel everyone staring at me as my spoon loudly hit the plate after using all my force to slice through the cake. The dessert was just shy of $20 which felt overpriced. While none of these issues are bad enough to stop me returning, I probably wouldn't recommend Strawberry Fare to others.

Occasion : Birthday
Ordered: Entrees, Mains and Desserts
Recommend: Chef tasting plate of desserts
We came here just after the earthquakes at its new location
in Bealey and it were for my birthday. They accommodated us well as a group or
9 adults and 2 children aged 8 &12 yrs. The staff always made sure we had
drinks and water was topped up, restaurant was busy. Although all the mains and
the entrees were really good they did best what they have always done best and
that was their desserts. The tasting plate gave me an opportunity to taste more
of what they have to offer and it was awesome. Pecan Pie Tart, White chocolate and
Raspberry mousse and a New York baked cheesecake, it was divine. The plates
were beautifully presented with amazing sugar work was really impressive. Even
the kids were amazed.

Occasion: Work end of year 2013 ( 20-25 people)
Ordered: Brunch
Recommend: New Style Simple Salmon
** Went on a second occasion for work group of around 25 for
our end of year Brunch in 2013 and I have to totally recommend the “New Style
Simple Salmon” comes with lemon and Chive Crème fraiche on toasted Ciabatta
with an apple and chive salad. This dish was by far one of my most amazing
picks of food. A wife of one of my colleagues also got this dish and we were
both so blown away by it. The salad with the Salmon was an ultimate flavour
combo and complimented the Salmon awesomely by bringing out the flavour and matching
it with the chive and crunch of the apple. Recommend if you like Salmon this is
the dish. P.s I am not a huge salmon fan
but when I taste it with something like this, I can appreciate why Salmon is a
big fuss at times.

Another dinner here and still the same high quality service and food. Just a main tonight but a very tender medium fillet (I did order medium rare but it was still very tender and moist). Staff are excellent here.

Came here about a month ago with some friends and boyfriend to celebrate me finally moving to christchurch and recieving a promotion. Id been told that the deserts here are lovely and it was the first time any of us had ever been there and when we arrived a lady downstairs just told us to go up the stairs, so we did.
After sitting at a table we were approached by a short haired waitress who was EXTREMELY rude and sounded almost personally offended that we didnt wait to be seated. We had no idea (the wonan downstairs didnt say anything) and unfortunately it ruined the whole experience for us, we felt like a massive inconvenience and where too nervous to ask the waitress for water. The desserts were fantastic, though- which is a shame because the service was appauling. Warning friends who decide to come here about the service, horrible experience for a celebratory outing.

Dessert was so sickly I felt like vomiting.

Love it!! but only for dessert !
Great staff , nice place and super yummy ,
Nice seating if you can get right by the window and look down onto the avon at night. being coming to this place for 20years and never been disappointed. It's a chistchurch icon that has stood testament to all us sweet tooths.

Went for a girls' night out a few months ago and the food was superb as ever. Delicious salmon with an amazing salad and crème fraiche dressing and of course the desserts are simply the best.

Have been to Strawberry Fare numerous times for both brunch and dinner, have always ordered the fillet steak for dinner and can't fault it, it's absolutely amazing! Can happily say the same for the times I have visited for brunch, usually order French toast which is also delicious. great views and atmosphere, only thing to fault is the service which could be a bit more attentive and drinks need to be asked more regularity, also the tables are very close together you can hear very clearly the table next to yours conversation and can be rather awkward, overall my favourite restaurant, and will always keep coming back!
Sarah Gleeson
The food is so good at Strawberry Fare its just such a shame about the poor service. The length of time you have to wait to get served and then get your meal really is frustrating. We had gone on a reasonably quiet night and had to watch one table get their entrees, main and desert before we even got asked if we wanted a drink. When we ordered our main it took almost an hour to get to us then when we had finished we sat around waiting to get our plates cleared and be offered a desert menu. We watched staff stand around idle for ages before we finally deciding to go to a supermarket and buy ice cream for desert rather then be ignored for any longer. The servers maybe only doing the job to get through uni or whatever but they should take more pride in their work and do what they are paid to do...serve the customer!
Cheryl Hampton
People say that strawberry fare is a dessert place I disagree with these people. I had the duck it was fabulous and the steak was very good too. The mains excelled while the dessert was left in the dust. So don't over look the mains it is a good all round restaurant
Thomas
Absolutely fantastic restaurant. Had just dessert there first, but the menu is great and dinner a big pleasure with very friendly staff (Eddi, you're top). Everything is done to make you feel comfortable (even on a busy night) and the the food is nicely presented.

Thank you very much!!!!
Allie
Having been to the old restaurant on a number of occasions I was quite excited about coming back. We booked for 5.30pm with 4 kids, I knew there was another booking coming in after us so was very surprised that service was so slow. There was only one real choice on the kids menu and only one dessert. I noticed that we weren't the only table having very slow service, the staff seemed more interested in standing around the bar staring vaguely into the distance. Overall I was really disappointed and at $277 for 2 adults and 4 kids I can be ignored elsewhere for a lot less!

I was disappointed with my experience as I had heard such great things about Strawberry Fare and was so excited to go there for my birthday. Firstly the item on their menu I ordered was not well described. I ordered a mussel starter that had a strong lemon flavour when no lemon was stated on the menu which made it inedible for me. When I mentioned this to the waitress she went and talked to the chef, confirmed there was lemon in it, apologized and then asked me if I wanted something else. Due to the menu being small, there was nothing else to my liking so I declined. The salmon main and the dessert ordered was satisfactory in taste, but not in size and price. Given the food received, the price of the final bill and that I was made to pay for an expensive starter that was very misleading I won't be rushing back in a hurry or recommending it to anyone. I have had nicer desserts at other restaurants for half the price.

I have been here twice and both times the food and service were excellent. However my concern is the wheelchair accessibility. Yes there are tables downstairs but the main dining area is on the first level which is up about 15 steep stairs. There is no lift I was told. I guess the downstairs tables make it wheelchair accessible but this does make the elderly and people with a disability who use a wheelchair something like second class citizens. Not good enough for a new building! I think the only toilet was upstairs.

Recently went to Strawberry Fare for dessert, was step sons birthday and his choice. The desserts were great, plentiful and I thought reasonably priced. Friendly efficient service with staff willing to stop and talk. Looked over the mains menu and it looked okay to.

Certainly would go back.

I went to Strawberry Fare 05/12 @ 3.45pm. We pre booked a table for 11 people.
First of all the table was set for 10, which wasn't too much of a problem, but the staff were very sour. I don't think I saw one smile the whole time we were there.
We were the only table in the restaurant and still they couldn't be bothered with us. It was a hot Canterbury day, we had water on the table but no other drinks were offered. We tried to get the attention of the waitress to find out what the dessert platter of the day was, but she was too busy setting other tables to take any notice of her only customers.
She finally came over and we had to ask what the platter was. The desserts were all very nice. We were all happy with them. Our plates were taken away and again no coffees or anything were offered. If I was the boss, i'd be pretty annoyed with my staff, as they could have made a few more dollars out of us. Desserts were between $16 and $18 so I do expect service with a smile for that price.
Wouldn't rush back quickly that's for sure.
Kate
Me and my partner went there for a dinner to celebrate my birthday. No a good night at all! If it wasn't for the reputation of dessert. We even booked table in advance, but still be seated in the corner and my partner can not move his arm while dinning. One of the duty manager was rude! She give me two choices of table, they the same size! And there are four bigger tables are empty. Most disappointed thing is the food, had so many duck in my life, that was the worse one. Dry and not even enough for me, not to mention for my partner.
I think the waitress knew that we are not very happy about the small table and did not even offer us dessert after we finish main, just left the empty plate there!
So we left without having dessert! Bad experience for a birthday, and I will not spend more money there.

Absolutely Fabulous Sweetie!

Fantastic service from go. Unbelievably, we had a breakdown on the way to the restaurant which completely threw our booking time out the window, but the staff were more than understanding and accommodating for the unforeseen hiccup.

Food was delicious as usual. We have been to the Pre-Quake restaurant many times but this was our first visit to the new venue, (gorgeous views) which has only encouraged us to keep coming back!

Great food. Great service. Gotta Go!

Came here on Valentine's Day for dessert and it was delicious and the Cheesecake I had was presented beautifully.

Wonderful place to celebrate a birthday or other special event. Magical desserts but their light main courses are also just excellent. Great atmosphere and good value for money. Because it is not excessively expensive you can suggest it as a place for a group of friends or work colleagues to go without worrying that it may stretch their bedgets. I have introduced overseas visitors to strawberry Fare and they too have raved about it. It becomes a place of many happy memories. So glad that it is reopening.

Been here for mainly for desert but have been for lunch as well once.
Very nice and well prepared food, service is always good and especially nice to have the waitress remember who order what..

My partner & I dinned at Strawberry Fare for a romantic evening out. We were very very impressed, the meal was absolutely wonderful, I had the Salmon and may I say *Devine and mouth watering* Yummy yummy. The staff were friendly and did a great job. Complements to the Chef and staff.

I've been here at different times for breakfasts, full dinners and desserts. Decor and surroundings are nice and the staff have been friendly. The food has been quick and well presented. The meals weren't large servings but I felt that the quality was excellent and was happy to pay the price for the overall dining experience.

I have been here for brunch, dinner, and dessert at different times and have always been impressed with the menu and high quality of our meals. Service is good, even in busy times. They cope well with large groups, too.
