Review Drexel's Restaurant - Christchurch

Simone Templeton
Had a great birthday brunch ... table of 5 .. 2x kids and 3x adults .... the prices match the plate. I ordered waffles, they were huge and delicious. I ordered over easy eggs on toast as a side which were surprisingly good 🙂... kids had huge hash browns and they ate it all! Plus waffles .... other friend ordered the farmers plate.... huge and delicious plate of food .... she took half home ... totally recommend this restaurant for good filling food appropriately priced ...

Drexel's is an old favourite of ours. It caters for the family so it was great having our two young grandchildren with us. It has a relaxed atmosphere and very tasty food. At first the service was a bit slow but then it picked up and we felt well- looked after.

Amazing place! Wish I would have taken the avocado toast instead of crepes

A great spot for breakfast and brunch - knew it had to be pretty good from the crazy number of people there. We visited twice while in Christchurch for the weekend and never booked but were able to get a table with just 2-minute and 15-minute waits. Our fav was the Mediterranean omelette and juices were great too. The waffle was a little doughy for our liking. Great service - if we’re back in Christchurch again visiting here will definitely be on the to-do list.

Best breakfast since 1986. They lose 1 star for the change in their french toast, however food is glorious and always a treat to visit (live out of chch now). Still exceptional value.

I have come to Drexel's for family breakfasts ever since I was little. Now that I'm first year polytech, I still love coming with my loved ones. The pricing is reasonable and it's really easy to build a meal. I got an almond milk hot chocolate, and one piece of French toast with a side of a hash brown which were lovely and would definitely recommend. It was easy and efficient to book online, so would DEFINITELY recommend booking ahead. I've always had great experiences coming to Drexel's and cannot wait to come again in the future. Thank you for the lovely brunch!! :-)

Very popular place and food that is just great. Had the omelet and egg and toast for my daughter. Food was very filling and delicious.

Friendly services; I had the coffee, orange juice and Drexel special with pancake; food is good and big portion;

A far different and better experience than last time. We were served fast, prompt and the food was HUGE. The pancakes were perfection and the blueberries and cream were generously given. The coffee was endless for $4.80 and someone always offered to top up. I took my pancakes home because the regular stack was a giant amount. My daughter got the kids platter and the waffle and hotcake were both golden and soft inside, deliciously crispy outside. Selection of fruit and cream plus only 2.00 for an extra (a poached egg) she was most pleased. 10/10 Staff location and food all amazing

Delicious food 🤤👌🏾 amazing service and our favourite family Sunday brekky stop. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We booked in here for breakfast recently. It was absolutely packed at 10am! The staff seemed to be all over the place, and running around trying to serve everyone. There's not a lot of room to move around/walk in there which is unfortunate. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. Nothing was overcooked or bad at all, it was just consistent. Which is quite a feat for a place that seems so busy. If we were to go back again, I'd go when it's not so busy and hectic. It was very loud in there and quite overwhelming. It mde it hard to enjoy our food and chat.

Went there for the first time yesterday with two of my friends, we had a lovely time. Great customer service and really delicious food! Thank you Drexel's for an overall good experience!! :)

Friendly service. I had the toasties and it was delicious. My sister had the pancakes and she liked it too. Place is clean and workers were nice. There is a wait on your order tho so good to be with someone to kill time. Lol

If you landing in Christchurch early morning like 7am.go to this place without second thoughts.A great bf restaurant with bottomless coffee (unlimited filter coffee). Food potions are satisfying with good taste.

Always love going here for a brunch! Bit on the pricey side, but you honestly pay for quality!! The house made hash browns are amazing and the waffles are so crispy on the outside but nice and fluffy in the middle! If only it was easier to get bookings here :( would recommend this place to ANYONE!!

I have been visiting Drexels as regularly as I am able since I was young and it never fails to impress. We arrived half an hour early, yet we were seated within 5 minutes and the rest of the staff we encountered were as attentive and friendly as the lady who seated us. The food was incredible; the waffles were are the best I have ever had and they were the highlight of the meal, closely followed by the hash brown and poached eggs which go perfectly together. It is a little on the pricer side but as it was a special occasion, absolutely worth every cent.

One of the best breakfast place I’ve been to. Good for special occasions, as it is a little expensive. I got what I ordered and met my expectations. The staffs were nice and very helpful.

Service was good. The food was decent though I'd prefer my French toast be a bit less eggy. Convenient parking at the mall. Prices were fair.

I have frequented Drexel’s for years, since they started out on Hereford Street. The food is unpretentious and generous, and I always recall the service being professional and friendly.

On our last visit I noticed that the quality of the service is not what it once was. The senior person who served us was professional and attentive, but another staff member dropped an iced coffee (or something similarly sticky) splattering over my partners hair, handbag and clothes. Both my partner and I have worked in hospitality so we get that these things happen and we didn’t make any fuss, but the problem was that nobody made any an apology to her and not even so much as a complimentary cup of coffee was offered. My partner cleaned herself up as much as she could in the bathroom, we paid for our meals and she spent the rest of the day particularly sticky.

It’s a little sad to see the standard slip at what I would have once called a Christchurch institution.

Great food and lovely staff. We go here all the time for breakfast or brunch. The pancakes are amazing and should definitely not be missed..

NOT safe for allergy families despite multiple reassurances. Initially friendly service quickly disappeared as the mistakes began. Despite repeated checks dietary requirements were served incorrectly and wait staff then blamed the victim, who had asked REPEATEDLY. Meals were not served together (some had finished before others were served). Some items (fruit salad, for example) were not served until asked for THREE times. If we had been informed that to get dairy free we had to also have gluten free pancakes we would have chosen differently as gluten free is not that pleasant if you're not used to it. We now have allergy reactions to deal with thanks to this subpar service.

Brilliant for a sneeky Brunch adventure!
I recommend having the pancakes or waffles.
I've had the pleasure of going to Drexels on a couple occasions and it was brilliant on both visits!
Aleshia
Food was the best part (even considering the pancakes were undercooked!). The service was horrendous, they didn't even want us there and treated us as pest.
Sean Oliver Barker
I always come here often as humanly possible never been disappointed by the service or the food been one mix up out of the fifteen times I've been which is a good ratio they fixed the issue easy as well I'd definitely recommend it's a little packed book in advance is my advice they make the most with there space and wouldn't hold that against them as it's always busy but 10/10 all around

BOOK IN ADVANCED! Drexel's deserves its names as its known to be CHCH's Breakfast restaurant. I personally hate eating breakfast but Drexel offers so much variety that still categorises itself as a breakfast meal, such as the breakfast burrito, my personal fave, topped with guacamole, pulled chicken, cheese and a dollop of sour cream. The complementary free toast adds extra brownie points as Drexel's always goes the extra mile, regardless of how busy it is. The great service and friendly staff always ensure there is something to snack or drink thanks to the 'bottomless drinks' which why can drink as much as you want for a small price. The eggs Benedict is an obvious fav as well as the homemade hash browns. The welcoming atmosphere and modern scenery will continue to get me up in the morning, only for Drexel's

Good breakfast portions for the price plus they serve it all day. We had the crepes and the breakfast burrito. As they were out of spinach they added extra mushrooms for us to both. The free toast till the breakfast arrives is a nice touch.

The crepes were nice and light with scrambled eggs and a hash brown on the side. The burrito had the similar vegetables with a hot sauce, hash brown, sour cream and guacamole on the side.

The coffee too is decent. I was really tempted by their sweet breakfast options hopefully another time.

It's not too bad there most of the time sometime the service is crap because it's too busy otherwise the food is yummo

I enjoy just chilling out there reading the paper I've been a regular there since it was built
Kristine Tai
It seems to be always full, def worth trying! Huge and fluffy pancakes. Ordered the enchiladas, loved it. Something different for breakfast !

When in doubt, Drexels. -Me to my friends most weekends.

Perfect diner-like restaurant for brunch.
TIP: **BOOK IN ADVANCE ON WEEKENDS** You will save yourself a hours waiting time, they are very popular!

I rate Drexels pretty highly for the value aspect and the food range. They have an amazing selection of carbs, carbs and mexican? All at affordable prices.

Would recommend Omelettes, french toast, waffles and the Salmon bagel
Kenneth
A great dining experience. Exceptional service, staff friendly and helpful and food served promptly. Food superb and a great variety. I had the Farmer's breakfast which set me up for day. Bottomless cup coffee a plus. Great value for money. Just missed giving a full ***** rating as my first coffee was sloshed over the saucer. Certainly would recommend and it is easy to find with undercover parking.
Turned up twice without booking and only had to wait 20mins for a table. Good service and orders are taken promptly after we sat down. Drexel's special is my favourite with half Waffle. Corned beef hash is absolutely yummo. Another favourite is breakfast burrito. Definitely a good place to go out for breakfast in chch but booking first is advisable

This place is kind of the Denny's of breakfasts. Always very popular and I have always wondered why. I've tried breakfast restaurants in Melbourne, Sydney and New York, so it was quite nice to be able to try one in Christchurch.

The thing is with these places I've found, is to go in with low expectations and hope they improve on that. The seating is set in such a way that it is made to make the most of the space. When busy, this place is noisy.

I'm a fan of eggs benedict, so I went with that as my choice. You would think that even though this place is Dennyish, because it specialises in breakfasts it should be pretty good, right? WRONG!

The muffin was warmed rather than toasted as promised and the hollandaise sauce has to be one of the most bland that I have ever come across. The hash brown was actually pretty good and I did enjoy that, but it was a small consolation for what was otherwise a fairly disappointing meal.

Service was as good as can be expected with Drexels and I probably still would return, I just wont go near that hollandaise sauce.

I imagine this place to be very similar to the american type diners often seen on TV. i found the food here to be very average and overpriced. the environment is super busy and noisy. bookings definitely required and even then we had to sit in the waiting area for 10 minutes until our table had been cleared. i had heard great things about Drexels however i was a little disappointed, having experienced far better breakfast/brunches at various other cafes.
Nessa
There waffles are my absolute favourite. Always have my family catch up here for ladies breakfast and its always been our favourite. Literally need to get a booking or else youll be waiting for a seat for a while but definately worth the wait!
Cat
A solid breakfast establishment in Christchurch offering generous portions of "American Style Breakfast." As an American living in Christchurch, it's nice to have a little slice of home just down the street. The breakfast menu is available all day and features anything from large breakfast platters and "Drex Mex" to omelettes and salads. The breakfast special is my favorite which is 2 eggs your way, choice of mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon or sausage and your choice of 2 pancakes, waffles or french toast. I opted for bacon and pancakes. The bacon was slightly crispy and slightly undercooked, the pancakes were light and fluffy and a little larger than a bread plate.

Definitely make a booking if you want to eat here during the weekend as the restaurant is always packed, especially starting around 8am. If you're an early bird, 7am is a more peaceful dining experience in this modern establishment.

It is so hard to get a booking on weekends!!!
I like the deco style. Bright, simple and spacious.
Same with the food.
Simple and tasty. Also the portion size is great.
There's no reason for a place like this not to be popular.
Luc Chandler
Enjoyed dining here.

Nice friendly staff to make room for a table of two.

The meal was fulling and tasty. The endless Milo was a nice addition seeing as I don't like coffee.
Sean Owers
Possibly the best place in Christchurch to get breakfast. Service and food are consistently amazing. It'd be great if they could get the Peach & Orange French Toast back on the menu though! Then I'd definitely be rating them 5 stars.
Andrew Smith
Breakfast with my wife at Drexels. Immensely busy (as always) with prompt, friendly service. The menu has been re-jigged since we were last here with a few more options, but not too big or confusing.

Food was, as you would expect, excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. Always worth the potential wait for a seat.
Lee Purves
Solid, cheap place to eat a quick breakfast on the go with bottomless filter coffee and free toast. No surcharge either for dining on a public holiday.
Grace
A delicious place to go for brunch! Great value for money, pancakes are delicious, as are the farmers breakfasts, hash browns and bagels. Staff are helpful and always refilling bottomless coffees. Bookings are advisable as it is usually busy, and for a good reason too!
Shane E
To be honest I'm not a fan of Drexels, and for the money vs what you get.... questionable. The food is generally ok, but no better than you'd get at Denny 's. And you pay half as much again. If they had more competition, in the Riccarton area, maybe they'd not do so well
What?
Amazing! It never occurred to me that I'd need to book for breakfast, but luckily the friendly and efficient staff found a seat for me anyway.
The food is excellent, and good value. If they could just source some free -range eggs, I'd be asking the site admin to give Drexels 6 stars. it really is that good.
Brad Sherry
Make a booking if you want to get in on weekends but its worth it for a real American style breakfasts with all the trimmings. Good service and pricing, big pancakes and nice home style bacon and eggs. Great for that special breakfast with the family.

Never ever have I been disappointed with this place! Great place to have a classic American Breakfast. I always go for the 'Drexels Special' which is a good size portion. Many YUMMY options to choose from!!!!
They are usually quite busy so food might take sometime to be on your table but totally worth the wait!
Becky Lodge
Busy, great food, Great service

Disappointing. Not the usual standard. food appeared to be slopped on to the plate...and the pancakes slim doughy and under cooked...not the usual golden thick fluffy ones.

I love to write good reviews on restaurants but in this instance it is not possible.
Dined at Drexel's Restaurant to be let down by dry pancakes with no syrup that was $3 extra and I was being stubborn as I believe they go together like toast and butter.
The staff were rude and we felt like we were putting them out just by being there.
My mother in law had a Caesar salad that didn't come with an egg so had to order that as an extra. I mean come on Drexels, sort it out.
I would start with the staff.
Quincy Salazar
Had to try this place after hearing only good things got the most expensive meal, the farmers breakfast, also brought a fruit salad. The fruit salad had about 3 grapes, a couple of bits of pineapple and some rock melon. The farmers breakfast had no flavour and had no flavour. Eggs were disgusting
Mahyvictoria
Very good place to dine in for breakfast, we went there this morning for breakfast very nice place and massive meals just if you don't have a booking you need to wait for a while, but it's good place in Christchruch

our family always enjoy Drexel's - the kids platters are a real hit for our little ones and hubby and I love the Drexel's special. It is always a warm and friendly place to be and the service is good too. We have been often and find the meals very consistent, and the price is doable for a family of 7.
The children love the toast and spreads and even though they sometimes make a mess in their efforts to do it themselves, the staff are always genuinely sweet.

Never have I had so much microwaved food on my plate since I was a poor student. Pretty gross for the price. Disgusting coffee and sausages, couldn't stomach either for the high price you pay. Costs the same as a restaurant where everything is cooked fresh. Tl;dr microwaved processed food - restaurant price, the mcdonalds of breakfast restaurants.

Like the concept of a breakfast restaurant! Service was great, coffee average, food great. Waitress was very helpful and more than happy to accommodate to my tastes (I don't like eggs). Had the eggs benne minus the eggs with spinach and bacon instead. Was very tasty, and a good sized portion.
Love the complimentary toast and spreads. Friends breakfast also looked great. Tried some of her waffles which were tasty.

This place is so awesome. Great coffee, great food, lovely staff. I can't fault it. The best breakfast we have ever had. The waffles were amazing. Prices were reasonable and there are different options for the size of your meal. I'll remember this next time because I ordered way too much. The only problem I have is that there isn't another Drexels in Christchurch because it's always so busy and hard to get a table if you don't book ahead.
Philippa
Went there for lunch and thought prices were a bit high for the quality.. Was nice but not amazing..

Delicious place to eat brunch. Very American and enjoyed the atmosphere too. Have been here several times with great food and presentation every time! The free toast that came with our meal was nice too. A little pricey but worth it!

If we ever want to impress out of town visitors we take them to this restaraunt it is simply world class. The food the service atmosphere are as good as you will find anywhere its popularity speaks volumes ,the only downfall is that you must book .

Graeme
Graeme

I love Drexel's! The meals are always a good portion and so tasty. And icecream sundaes for breakfast, you can't go wrong! The wait staff are brilliant too! Definitely book in advance though, you don't want to miss out!
Kirsty Prue
We love going to this awesome breakfast restaurant. The staff are always friendly and the food is FANTASTIC! They are always booked up, which is a bit of a pain but its well worth the wait! The serving size is always generous and the food comes out hot. We try and find any excuse to go here haha.
Emi Mae
I really enjoy coming to Drexels for the great food. I love the idea of a breakfast restaurant.
The staff seem to rush around a lot, and is sometimes hard to get their attention - but otherwise friendly. I loved the birthday candle on my pancake!
Siobhan
The concept of a breakfast restaurant sounded intriguing but we were swiftly disappointed when we got there. Our waitress was particularly rude and treated us as though we were an inconvenience. To Drexels credit, we complained to the manager and she handled it very graciously.
Tina
We recently had the pleasure of dining at the Riccarton branch for the first time. The restaurant is light and bright and has a good busy vibe. Staff are very pleasant and efficient and the homemade hash browns are delicious. The coffee is not particularly strong but it is bottomless. We now prefer this branch over the town one and will be back there soon.
