Review Styx And Stone - Christchurch

Nice experience, we ordered a Surf & Turf and it was delicious, the best I've ever had, for my wife, a mushroom risotto with a tasty pulled brisket, we finished with a volcano and a chocolate that you could tell was baked to order, highly recommended and a sticky pudding also delicious, 10/10

Nice food. The crispy chicken was the star of the night. Fish in banana leaf was nice as well

The staff was very welcoming and I felt a lot of respect yummy food 🥰

It was chill out time with my daughter. Food was fine. It would be better to have some presentations on the plate.

We recently enjoyed a meal in your function room, and we were delighted with our dining experience. The meals were delicious, and we want to extend our thanks for that. However, it was our waitress, Blaze, who truly made our evening exceptional. She displayed an incredible level of attentiveness to our needs without ever being pushy. Blaze went above and beyond, especially when we encountered limited dessert options. In our eyes, Blaze is a one-in-a-million waitress who deserves recognition for her outstanding service.

Enjoyed a lovely dinner here last night. We were the only ones around, but Dion (apologies for spelling) looked after us very well. My husband had the Rib eye steak which he said was very nice, and I had the hawker roll, which the kitchen kindly modified to a haloumi option to make it vegetarian for me. It was really delicious and very filling. This place has a nice relaxed casual vibe.

Of all the grill restaurants this is the best. starting with the exquisite menus they have, of which I have had the opportunity to try and enjoy most of them. However, I can't stop eating the varieties of pizza and the Sunday roasts. the efficient and effective service they provide, and something that I find very important is the cleanliness of the place, and the good music... it really is a place to enjoy with family and friends. Thank you very much for the good time.

We had dinner at Styx and Stone a few days ago. The service was very friendly and prompt and the food was delicious. My husband had a steak and he said it was the best he'd had in ages. I had a yummy burger with generous helpings of french fries. The menu is extensive with heaps of choice. We will definitely return next time we are in Christchurch. Thanks for a very enjoyable meal!

Incredible service. Outstanding staff who were nothing was a hassle. So polite, friendly and happy. Bella made a delicious cocktail, Kyra did a great job as a waiter! Brian was an excellent waiter and manager. Service with a smile. Great food.

I dined at Styx with some old friends recently and we had a wonderful evening. The friendly staff provided an excellent timely service in very pleasant surroundings. I chose the eye fillet served with a peppercorn sauce and a roast potato accompanied by vegetables. The steak was cooked to perfection. It was delicious. There is something on the menu for everyone. I'll be back.

Such a great restaurant, the staff were lovely, very welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious and they catered to my 6 year old with a lovely kids menu, with wordfinds, pictures to colour, spot the difference and crayons to keep her busy. Delicious drinks menu, and cocktails list too! Will definitely go back here, 10/10!!

I couldn't recommend this restaurant any higher than just saying it was awesome, amazing, decadent, delicious, we all dined like kings and queens and they treated our business friends and family like the heroes, the food was amazing, we are plant-based eaters and they looked after like we were normal. >>> Special thanks to the team Sammy, Brian, Sophie and Ruby as the all where amazing! It's not every day you find a restaurant that is running in true harmony! Obviously have no hesitation in recommending Styx & Stone Northwood.

We went to celebrate my birthday, the staff were excellent, with a very relaxed and friendly demeanor, which set the scene for a very enjoyable night. I had the Stone Grill and it was sensational with the other members of our party enjoying their food too. I think we have just found our new favourite restaurant!

Our experience here was incredible, our waiter Brain was so friendly and very attentive to our large group. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. Would absolutely recommend this place to others :)

My husband and I went here for his birthday last week. It was quite a nice atmosphere, the staff were absolutely brilliant, the food was good. For once my steak was actually cooked right! Seems to be something most restaurants cannot do right. My steak was perfectly cooked to rare, not overcooked and well done like most of the places we go. It wasn't mind blowingly good food, but it was consistent. I didn't like that our meals came out separately, and my husband had to wait a bit longer for his meal. All things considered though, we'd definitely return.

Always have pasta or rib eye steak here. Never had any issues with our meal. Service is okay a bit slow with serving but nothing major. Nice place for lunch or catch up dinner.

Love this place on a Sunday when I feel like a big breakfast or brunch for a cheap $15 meal, massive souvlaki, burger or just fish n chips. Good quality & service.

So thought I would try our local bar today. Ordered an eternal fillet on the stone with roast potatoes and mushrooms. First got vegetables but easily remedied. Then the eye fillet. Well I have not eaten a piece of eye fillet or any steak cut to be honest as tough as this in about 5 years. It was actually so tough I almost started eating my shoe. Pretty sure it would have been more tender. Mushrooms were swimming in butter to the point of 1 was equivalent to a 500g block of butter I think. Would I eat here again. ABSOLUTELY NOT. For the overpriced tiny tough piece of meat not worth it. But. Let's be fair it's not in the mistake it's how it's remedied. So one tiny piece of meat eaten 1 mushroom eaten. Everything else left. So they gave me a 50% reduction. Pwah. Yeah we won't be back

Reasonable wheelchair access (good parking, thresholds, and tables, but doors overly heavy and ramp to upper seating area a little too steep). Warm. Music a bit louder than I prefer, but not conversation-killing levels.<br/><br/>Love the stone grill venison. As others have said, the blue cheese sauce here is STRONG--one of us loved it, the other two found it a bit much (perhaps they should offer a milder option?). The roast potatoes (skin on) were way too heavily salted, but the veges of the day were beautiful. Our guest had the 500gm $20 steak special and made a pretty impressive dent in it too!<br/><br/>Waited less than 20 minutes for our meals. Ordering dessert did require flagging down a passing waitress, however.  <br/><br/>The hot fudge chocolate sundae was well worth the $12.50, though a bit difficult to eat out of the tall glass it's served in (we asked for a bowl and transferred the contents). This thing came with tempered chocolate squiggles on top, ice cream, chocolate sauce, fudge, brownie... no sign of any whipped cream, but to be honest I didn't miss it. We got extra spoons and shared one dessert between two, which worked out well. I've had better meals during my week in Christchurch, but nothing that compared to this dessert!

Arrived here very late and the staff were able to take our dinner order which was excellent.  Wer here with a big crowd and the staff were very accommodating.  Food was good, not outstanding, but wouldn't complain.  Looking forward to coming for lunch soon.

I had the eye fillet, the rare meat was practically medium rare and the way they presented it was very questionable unfortunately I didn't have any photos. I will try go again though because I love the atmosphere of the place.

The food was pretty good. The waitress was good and she made sure we were ok for everything.

This is a place we love to stop at for lunch when coming into christchurch for the day. the $10 lunches are great value for money and I have never seen the restaurant empty. now that tells you something on its own. Weh and meet friends here for dinner a couple of times and the only complaint would be it can get really hot in the upstairs setting area.

Had the most amazing time at Styx and Stone tonight. Went in for dinner and the place was buzzing, had a really busy bar and restaurant, so the atmosphere was great. We were told about the $20 stone grill deal and thought we would give it ago. Best idea ever. You got to cook your own steak, was so yummy as you get it how you like it. Staff all super friendly and very smart uniforms. Will definitely be back. Two thumbs up.

Walked it told to take a seat and come back to the bar and order. Hello it's a resurant we should be served. Then were told they weren't doing stone grill. It's a stone grill restaurant why they can't serve stone grill is beyond me. Took a seat at a table and were told rudely you can't sit there it reserved wkgb no sign saying that. Went to order meals at bar the waitress was very rude and abrupt. Meals took forever. Will not come back again.

Lunched at Styx with my two daughters today. I have never been disappointed on my many previous weekday visits and today was no different. The lunch/$10 menu has great variety and is fantastic value for money - the quality is consistently good and you won't leave feeling hungry - haven't tried anything off this menu that I haven't enjoyed (and I've tried it all, several times over!). The staff are very friendly, attentive and work really hard to ensure you have everything you need. I highly recommend a visit, particularly during the week (this is when I've always been) - this is my favourite "go to" eatery. Although it was busy on this visit, the atmosphere was great - we sat in the area by the fireplace instead of the bar, and as usual, didn't have to wait long for our food and stayed longer than planned!

Drove into Chch yesterday to meet friend and do a bit of shopping after a quick lunch. Weather terrible so met at Northwood and decided to have lunch first. Friend had been before and as I decided to have the beef nachos, recommended I ask for a half size meal as portions very generous. Well she was right, even half size was more than ample, great taste, lovely and filling and generous with the cheese and other toppings and not too many corn chips which can sometimes be the bulk of the meal. My friend had the grilled chicken wrap which is a favourite of hers and once again didn't disappoint. Salad filling was so crisp and fresh and she said very filling, she didn't eat all the chips that came with the meal. We ended up staying longer than anticipated as atmosphere was lovely and cosy, and outside was not!! The staff were attentive and asked during the meal, and as they cleared the plates if everything had been okay with our meal. We finished off with a coffee each and flagged the shopping. Will be going back and perhaps try the dinner menu next time. Would recommend as a great place to catch up for lunch as the variety was great and as just out of town, didn't have to grapple with the traffic.

Have been overseas for the last 5 weeks and on returning to Christchurch and to celebrate a birthday we decided to eat out. Having visited this establishment on a number of occasions previously with no problems we decided to have dinner which was for 6 people. We were shown promptly to our seats and ordered drinks and quickly followed up by ordering our food. This is when things started to go downhill rapidly. Myself and one of my sons ordered steak both medium rare, we then had to request steak knives which were unceremoniously dumped on the table. My entire meal was cold, my sons was slightly warmer. On calling back the waiter he apologised and said he would get them sorted out. I then requested a different option from the menu but after he checked with the manager the waiter said this would not be possible and I must stick with my original choice, after a few deliberations with the waiter I declined this offer, he confided that if it was up to him I could have what I wanted but was acting under managers instructions. My daughter in laws Pizza was undercooked on the bottom and my wife's Caesar Salad had bacon that was virtually raw. Ten minutes later the waiter arrived back and proclaimed that the manager had decided that I could have another meal of choice (she must by this time have realised she was running a restaurant). We decided to cut our losses and leave with a number of uneaten meals on the table but was not prepared to pay for the meal that was sent back. The waiter then appeared and asked if we needed any deserts or coffee, we normally would have but unfortunately had to decline his offer. On paying for the meals my son was asked to pay the full amount even for the barely touched one which was sent back. The manager was insistent on arguing over this in full view of staff and customers. I intervened and said just pay the full amount and lets go at which point she deducted this meal from the bill. In the past 5 weeks we have eaten in many towns in England, Australia and Abu Dhabi and have never experienced such low quality meals or levels of service as were evident at this restaurant. I fully understand that things can go wrong but they can also be rectified/recovered in an appropriate manner. Needless to say the restaurant has now lost at least six customers and I wont be recommending this establishment to others.

My mother and I thought we would go out for a nice lunch but it ended up being anything but nice. The service was extremely poor, once our meals were served no one came back to ask how they were or if we would like another drink. The meals were very average and my mother actually had to try and politely put a mouth full into a serviette as she was unable to eat a huge gristly piece of beef. There was also a girl who was vacuuming whilst there were customers and you can just imagine how annoying that got. We ended up being one of the last people dining and we were made to feel as though we needed to eat quickly and leave. All of the employees just stood round talking about their sex lives and being extremely unprofessional. I would never ever go back. extremely disappointing!!

My family and I booked the private function room for my graduation dinner, needless to say I would not go back. The lack of customer service really ruined the whole experience for all of us; we had a very unhappy waitress looking after us who made her lack of interest very apparent. After we finished dinner we ordered dessert (we had to prompt her to getting us dessert menus, because she never asked) before dessert came out she brought us cutlery, which was great, however instead of perhaps placing the spoons on a napkin beside our seats she threw the pile of spoons into the middle of the table (which hadn't been cleaned down) and walked off. While I can't fault the food as I did enjoy my meal very much, for me my graduation dinner was supposed to be a happy experience and the lack of hospitality from our waitress left me unhappy.

Me and my friend dined here on a Wednesday evening I booked for 730 arriving we said we had a booking the host went and got menus n followed her to be seated once seated we were looking at the menus only to realise we didn't have any drink menus another waiter came over to serve us n asked if we would like a drink we said we didn't recieve the menu he brought one to us then have us a few moments we ordered drinks n they were brought quite quickly over we decided to have their $20 stone grill as that was the special of the night even though the waiter hasn't explained this I knew from looking at the website before booking once placing our order we waited a good 45 to 50 minutes for our stone at this point the resturant was less than half full if that once actually getting our meals the eye fillet was great as for the rest very average the blue cheese dips as way to over powering n I'm a blue cheese lover the food was average but most of the service was terrible once recieving our meals i decided i didnt like the dip and i would buy a side of aioli but not once did the waiter come back .. even to ask if our meal was ok we weren't explained the stone grill at all even though we've had them before usually a waiter would ask if u have to explain ... We both finished our drinks no one came and asked if we would like another one at any stage waiter returned once we had finished our meals didnt ask how anything was he asked if we would like dessert I said maybe in ten minutes or so as the stone is quite filling but I was planning to eat dessert as it is also their Wednesday special stone for $20 and dessert for $5 I still would of thought the waiter would of realized that we had finished our drinks yet he didnt ask if we would like anymore .. We went outside for a while to chat we returned in full swing of ordering dessert but unfortunately the waiter did not come back to our table we waited around 20 mins to be served again but nothing so we decided against it and just went to pay the bill the food is filling nothing great the meat was the best part and we cooked it ourselves if I was paying full price I'd expect more as for the service again terrible I would return to try a main meal they look great as I saw a few come out but I hope the service might improve its simple things that keep your customers happy

Great place! Have only been for lunches which are $10, such good value. Service is always very fast and never have been disappointed with the food. Friendly wait staff.

I took a friend here after she recommended it. I will never take anyone there again.<br/><br/>We were seated and orders taken, 45 mins later my garlic bread came (dry and tasteless) and I had to ask twice to find out why it was taking so long.<br/><br/>After an hour (yes more than an hour after ordering) our stone grills arrived (it's not like they had to cook the meat) and my salad was shrivelled, was told can't do garlic butter (as meal arrived) and not one person asked to refresh our drinks in the whole time we were there.<br/><br/>Staff were not pleasant and there was an obvious argument going on between duty manager and kitchen staff (tea towel thrown through serving hatch)<br/><br/>Was given considerable discount and a voucher, but do I really want to go through that again???<br/><br/>NO.
James
Shocking customer service, it's like they aren't interested in their customers enjoying their lunch experience.<br/><br/>Having made a booking we waited 10 minutes to be seated and were only seated after approaching a member of staff to request a table.<br/><br/>The meals took an hour to come out after two reminders to the waiting staff. What were they doing? Fish and chips, nachos and a salad don't take an hour to prepare!<br/><br/>Complaining to the member of staff that claimed to the owner, she didn't seem to mind that she would have six unhappy customers walking out so long a she got her money. Still not sure if she was actually the owner as I've not come across a business owner that cares so little about customer feedback.<br/><br/>Never again.

Had a $10 lunch of open chicken souvlaki, which was good value and very tasty. Also had an chicken BLT at $15 which was excellent, lots of flavour. Went there for expecting much for that price but were pleasantly surprised. Had dessert which was excellent. Service reasonably good, they were quite busy. Will return.

To celebrate my wife's birthday a group of 8 dined last night at this restaurant. We could not have been more pleased. The service was great and the meals fantastic and we found the whole night to be reasonably priced. As there was quite a large crowd there we expected delays but this did not happen.

I have been frequenting restaurants for many years and before the earthquakes I stuck mainly to the city restaurants.<br/>Post earthquakes I had been told of Styx and Stone to try by a friend as they had dined there and enjoyed the meal they had.<br/>I found the surroundings of the restaurant very much to my liking with a number of areas you could be seated at. <br/>The staff were friendly and very responsive to my requests, which I appreciate when treating myself to a meal out.<br/>I found the menu choices were wide a varied which was great as it allowed me to try dishes that the bulk of other restaurants don't provide, especially the Stone Grill. <br/>I have to say all of the meat was beautifully tender and of generous proportions, with good sized side dishes of side salads.<br/>All through the meal the staff were attentive even though the restaurant was full, courses were prompt and meal costs were very reasonable.<br/>I'm not one for usually writing reviews on restaurants but Styx &amp; Stone proved to be a very pleasant experience for my partner and I that I've made the effort to do so.<br/>A great experience with delicious food and friendly staff, which isn't hard on the pocket, good on you Styx &amp; Stone I will definitely be back and telling friends and acquaintances about your top notch restaurant.

After visiting Christchurch for the weekend we found this delightful bar &amp; restaurant, we both had the stone grill and it was fantastic, went back the next day on the way home for the $10 lunch - wow what great value!! We would recommend that you try it - we really enjoyed it and the staff were very friendly

The only consistent thing about Styx &amp; Stone Restaurant is it's inconsistency!! After supporting this Restaurant on and off now for about five years (I am a slow learner) my friend and I have finally decided enough is enough. Today our BLT was just so disgusting it was basically inedible. The bread was under-toasted and doughy, the bacon under-cooked and all this slimy dressing smothering limp lettuce and tomato. We duly complained and were offered a re-make which we accepted, only because we were enjoying our glass of wine. However, the "remake" of the meal was far worse than the original and they had added slimy red limp cooked capsicum. Yuk Yuk Yuk and good bye to you Styx &amp; Stone!!!!!!! By the way, we did pay even though we didn't eat it....

Wasnt overly impressed got here and ordered the 10 steak and was told that it had gone up to 12.50 even tho they stil advertising it for 10 any business advertising a certain price has to stand by it. Gave us the wrong drink and forgot my coffee, meal was disgusting my steak was like eating old boots, the souvlaki had aphid in it and the mince was horrible, service with a smile doesnt go astray either you would think they would try and rectify the bad situation but no

We had a fabulous meal at your restaurant. Great food and attentive, friendly staff. The stonegrill was a great experience. Very sociable and fun way to dine. I had the fettucine though and really loved it. Thanks for a great night. We will be back!!!<br/><br/><br/>----- 01 Sep, 2010 -----<br/><br/>I am not usually a steak eater when I dine out but this concept of a stone grill is amazing. Fun, social and the steak was tender and I could cook it just how I liked!<br/>Lovely decor and friendly staff!

Went for the $10 lunch deal.<br/>Couldn't sit where you wanted made us sit in a dark corner even though most the seating by the windows were empty the whole time we were there.<br/><br/>40 minutes to get an open chicken sandwich...<br/><br/>Drinks they forgot twice to serve us....<br/><br/>Staff are more interested in talking to them selves behind the bar....<br/><br/>Overall couldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I'll be back! Just keep the quality of your seafood chowder as high as it was when I was there for lunch a couple weeks ago! It was a lovely meal, friendly service and speedy! Good value, too.

Went on Sunday night 11/7/11. Mother in laws birthday dinner. Arrived at 7pm we were booked in for group of 6. Looking forward to stonegrill. Surly waitress came over and told us stonegrill menu which is over 50% of menu was unavailable as they had run out of stones at lunchtime!!!! Staff apologetic but still hugely dissapointing as this is why we had booked there! Main meals were atrocious worst I have had. Flavourless, small portions, potatoes came out cold! Vege's were terrible uncooked cauliflower etc. Yuck. Extreme lack of flavour. Fries were overcooked and dry and skimpy. Not only had they run out of stones for stonegrill, one of our party ordered a steak off the main menu and was told he couldn't have it. Also ordered a side of fried egg which was forgotten and brought out later. Didn't get dessert as wanted a quick getaway from this dive! Only consolation was we were given free coffees at the end of the meal, which was the high point of an awful meal!

Highly recommended. Went for the first time today - Sunday lunch. Factastic value and great tasting food - both main and dessert was awesome!. I am looking forward to going back and trying the stone grill - even my 10 year old niece had it and loved it. Fantastic staff also. Thanks so much for a lovely Sunday afternoon.

Having just had lunch there today I would rate it as the worst dining experience EVER. We eat out alot both here and overseas and I could not beleive today's lunch exoerience. Firstly we waited just over an hour for six stonegrill meals. An hour is excessive given that it was 2pm (that was the only time we could book a table for) and that the meals consisted of a few limp lettuce leaves, some minute warm 'roast' potatoes and a piece of raw meat...no cooking and not even fries. Okay-so the stonegrill meals- I had surf n turf 2 small mussells, two small cooked prawns,a scallop white (no roe) and if you put your thumb and forefinger together that was how big the piece of steak was...I took a photo. DH had the tasting sg and basically had what I had only his piece of steak was three times the size and a decent size piece of pork as well. Another tasting sg was the same. Son had turf which was a piece of steak which obviously had been sitting for awhile as it had cooked well oon one side.Daughter had the chicken sg- 4 cubes of chicken between two skewers and small portion of rice that was so hard that not only was it inedible but you couldn't 'cut' it. I actually felt sorry for the wait staff having to serve it. Spoke to the duty manager who knocked our drinks off the bill (big deal as not a huge amount).Value for $15 per sg??? I would rather pay $28 and have a real meal. We have all eaten again after leaving the restaurant.Horrid horrid horrid experience and I cannot understand why people keep going back.
Josh
This place is awesome!!! I would recommend to anyone that asked me for a good venue for a drink or meal in Christchurch. <br/>I have had the stone grill twice now and I have to say that the Quattro was my favourite. Being able to sample 4 types of meat on the one stone was perfect!!<br/><br/>A great place for a small or large group and plenty of icy cold beer on tap!!!
Greg Ellis
I have dined at the Styx and Stone restaurant on several occasions and can't speak highly enough about it. The new Stone grill concept is a real winner. The meat is lean and generous and you can cook it exactly the way you like it. Staff are friendly and helpful. Its become a regular for me and i always go for a dessert.<br/><br/>Greg
Amanda Vroombout
My partner and I had a fantastic experience at Styx and Stone whilst visiting Christchurch. <br/>We were thrilled by the meals. The Stone Grill was such an awesome idea and something we hadn't experienced before. Very tasty food and generous servings, yet not over the top.<br/>Desserts are to die for with a large selection to choose from.<br/>The atmosphere was great. Very chilled back and relaxed, somewhere you could go and have a drink or two with a lovely meal or a coffee and cake in front of the blazing fire. <br/><br/>We look forward to returning to Christchurch in the near future and this will certainly be somewhere I will recommend to friends.
Simon
Fantastic meal, great concept.<br/>Most tender piece of steak iv had.<br/>Lots of fun and great atmosphere.<br/>Will definitely be back again!
Laylah Roberts
Service was really good here, but the food was very, very average. Go here if you're just looking for a slab of meat because that's basically what it is. The potatoes were tasteless and if there was any rosemary on them I'd be surprised while the salad was one that just came out of those prepackaged bags with dressing on top. We left feeling dissatisfied. This place has great bones, they just need to improve the food!
Alison
Have had 4-5 dining experiences over the last few months. Always great service, great food!!<br/>Last dining was 26th June, and have never had a problem with anything. Maybe the people who gave a bad review just picked a night with possible illness of staff?? I would highly recommend dining here and see for yourself. We're planning on going this week.
Craig
Firstly I would like to say how great the new Bar looks both inside and out.<br/>We have been coming into your Bar now for a while and have always been happy with the service we receive.<br/>However I feel that after dining at your Restaurant with my friends this week i feel it was only fair to let you know how disappointed we felt.<br/><br/>We all felt like we were a bother for dining in and a real inconvenience. It is such a shame to have taken friends who we had raved about the place to feel so disappointed.<br/>Listen I feel so strongly about this because all 4 of us felt the same. The biggest problem we had was with our meals. Our meals was very and i stress very average and in one case a meal was hardly touched. Even small things such as the sauce was not the same, and something so small as this is what we loved. When we were asked if we were happy with our meals It then came clear there has been a change in your kitchen staff.<br/><br/>I just feel your staff need to pull their socks up. We had only dined in a few weeks ago and were more than happy with our meals.
Nick Frankish
Had a great meal. The stone grill is an excellent idea and worked well with the atmosphere of the place. Bar staff and waitstaff were friendly and helpful. <br/>I would recommend Styx and stone to anyone.
