Review Saigon Star - Christchurch

Nicole Swart
I had the combination pho with fried chicken and my husband had the hot pot beef pho with fried squid. It tasted amazing. Though one thing I will mention is that they should add some music so its not too quiet and also clean the water jugs better 🥰 Other than that fantastic food.

This restaurant is consistently delicious! I have been going here moderately often for the past 4-5 years and have never been disappointed by the food or the service! The lemongrass fried noodles are amazing here as well as the pho! The chef is also super open to any changes you want to make which is great for people with any dietary restrictions! This place is great for a quiet lunch but also perfect for a dinner date!

Authentic Vietnamese Cuisine in Christchurch. Delicious beef noodle, spring rolls and drink.

We each had different meals and starters and they were all absolutely amazing. We were so impressed, the flavours were so unique and so delicious. Staff were great! Also, the drinks menu was priced reasonably which is a refreshing change in Christchurch. Could not recommend highly enough!

The first time I tried the beef pho it really filled my soul and tasted like I was back in Vietnam.. this second time soup base tastes different not very strong flavours... the fried spring rolls the shell of the spring rolls is the texture of like prawn shells and quite sharp and edgy when you bite into them... overall nice could have more noodles and beef in the pho for price...

The taste is not perfect but it’s ok. Normally when you order Vietnamese iced coffee in North America, it comes with a Stainless Steel Vietnamese Coffee Drip Pot With a Coffee Filter Infuser which passes hot water through the grounds coffee into a cup that already contains condensed milk and ice. Here, the iced coffee just like a regular coffee with ice and condensed milk.

Fried rice was good overall, although the description said crispy (some Vietnamese speciality) which it didn't feel like - not sure if I misunderstood what it meant :). The chilli dip on the side was heavenly... Totally amped up the taste of the fried rice. Service was quick and staff was super friendly.

Crispy Chicken & Combo Fried Rice! 💕 I loooove Saigon Star Vietnamese Restaurant - super cheap meals made even cheaper with my Entertainment Book! 🌟 25% off! The total bill was a mere $34 for 4 dishes with leftovers to takeaway (Crispy Chicken, Combination Fried Rice, Fresh Chicken Spring Rolls and Beef Pho)! Service is great, and menu is huuuuge!!

Food is amazing! And also thanks for the good service! We tried Beef noodle soup, fresh spring roll, pancake and roasted chicken leg. I have to say everything is perfect and strongly recommend to try Beef noodle soup.

Must try. Been there few times and never dissapointed. Not a big place but enough to fill your tummy and heart with good food. Awesome spring rolls to start with and dessert, gone too quick.

This was a pleasingly appetising experience. The restaurant itself is quite tiny but it has a warm and inviting ambience. The produce they use in their dishes are fresh and flavoursome and they really contribute to the quality of their dishes. I highly recommend their beef pho and the beef coconut and mushroom stir fry. The beef was finely shaved and served medium rare which added to the sweet flavour of the dish. The vegetables were also al dente which heightened the tasty textured nature of the dish. I'm not much of a dessert man, but their deep fried banana and ice cream pud is a definite must!

It is my first time to eat Vietnamese food. Very delicious and tasty. I will go here again. Nice food, reasonable price. Love it❤️

I went here a couple of weeks ago and they had amazing food! I ordered the pho, crispy chicken and deep fried pork spring rolls, it was honestly all so good! However, their spring rolls were deffs a fav of mine! Would argue they have the best spring rolls in all of christchurch!!! 😁😁😁

My family and I love this place. Nothing fancy to look at but the food and the service is always top class and we drive across Christchurch to eat here or get takeaways, it’s that good and the price is pretty good too. We have been coming here for years and will continue to do so and recommend to our friends.

Great food but an extremely last two disappointing dinners here with service and rudeness of the owner. Last time staff took the order incorrectly and we had asked for not spicy. It came out spicy, they did not apologise and would not fix dish. Tonight owner was very rude, sat down away from customer area and played on his phone. They have done this every time we have dined there. We waited for someone to pay the bill. Rude over how we should pay the bill. Customer service needs to be improved upon. Would not recommend if you are wanting a nice meal out with polite staff.

Delicious meal!!! But seriously a bit more pork in my meal would’ve been wonderful!!! Catered to us very well great service. Meal was VERY DELIGHTFUL but more pork would’ve been beast. Thanks team for the delightful meal

I ordered takeaway for two beef noodle soups. I got there and it turns out they heard seafood noodle soup. Seeing it was quite late and we were hungry, I paid for it anyway. Got home and found out they charged me $13 per bowl even though it says $11.50 on the menu here.

The seafood noodle soup was dogshit. Their rice noodles were stuck so I couldn't even put it in the bowl. The broth was too sweet and the squid was like rubber. We threw it out after a few bites.

Needless to say, I would not recommend.

This is hands down my favourite place for Pho Bo, crispy squid and some fresh spring rolls. The service is always sweet and quick. The prices are so affordable! I come here every second Sunday for date night and I'm always happy

We were a table of seven there were a couple of others big tables, and only one waitress. We ordered entree and mains. The entree came out in good time the prawn skewers on sauger cane were bland, the crispy squid was average the pork and prawn pancake was just horrid under cooked oily and no flavour. Then we waited and waited and waited one main at a time SLOWLY came out but no rice and also wrong dishes arrived. The chilli beef with peanuts was oily and no peanuts the satay beef was really oily and so salty it was inedible. I could keep going but all up a terrible dinner especially for my dad as it was his bday. Will never dine there again and I don't recommend it.

The food was bland and not at all flavourful. To top it off, I ordered a vermicelli bowl with spring rolls and there was a big black hair poking out of the spring roll. When I pointed it out to the staff, it was promptly taken away but with no apology. They brought me another, but it was hard to tell if it was an entirely new meal or they had just taken out the hair-filled spring roll. The charge for this bowl remained on our bill.
My partner ordered fried rice noodles which were luke-warm and a tiny serving size. Had to douse all of it in sauce for any inkling of flavour. The Saigon Star spring rolls that were ordered as an entree came out in legitimately under a minute and were so stale and small. Pretty sure they must've just been premade and sitting out in the kitchen. We left still hungry, nauseous from the hair in the food, and disappointed by the lack of manners by the restaurant staff. I definitely do not recommend.

Neat and tidy with good size sitting. A good variety of colourful dishes that will boost your appetite. Reasonable prices and worth to come back to try the rest of the menu as the staff provide a really good service with perfect smile. 👍🏽

Prompt and friendly service great food with plenty of choices. Restaurant was busy on a Tuesday night which is a good sign. Will come again when next in NZ

Restaurant has a nice feel, enough space to move around. The service was nice. The staff were attentive and let us do as we were, we all ordered different dishes and shared. Id recommend the Fresh Chicken Spring rolls for entrée if you like something fresh, and the salt and garlic king prawns as a main. Also the Crispy Garlic Salt and chilli Squid was yum. We also ordered the whole deep fried fish which was truly a pretty dish......!

We showed up as it was closing AFTER it's closing time but they were kind and served us quickly. They said we were weclome to stay in and dine but we would have to eat quickly otherwise we were welcome to have a takeaway. We chose to have a takeaway and our meals came out briskly.

We ordered the Saigon Star fresh rolls, mixed meats on crispy noodles (39) and lemongrass with chili and veges and chicken (50). The Fresh rolls were SO AMAZING but we were not warned that the crispy noodles would become soggy for a takeaway. The flavour of the lemongrass dish was severely lacking and I could barely taste the lemongrass.

After an amazing entree, we were disappointed by the main meals.

We will go again to see if the dine in meals are better.

Price was very reasonable for the amount of food.

The food here is great, the service is friendly but a bit understaffed for busy times. Same goes for the kitchen I think as the food can come out at staggered times. But the food is awesome and very reasonably priced.

This food is really amazing and super quick, I have been here a few times with my parents and overall had a great time, the waitress was really helpful and helped us with ordering even though my mother's diet is quite restricted due to having coeliacs disease she was able to recommend a lot of gluten free options, which my mother thoroughly enjoyed we were even able to have gluten free entree's, service was great and very pleasant, the food was super tasty. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend.

The food really is amazing! Quick, tasty and cheap.
Unfortunately, their customer service is poor and it would be better if they could do something about that.

The waitress was quite rude and she even forgot one of our orders so one person was left alone without any indication regarding where their food was. Although there are some negatives like the service, the food was really good!

A visitor to Christchurch I came here at the recommendation of a friend for a dinner with 4. We had booked and were seated quickly and that is where the good news stops.

The waitress ignored us to the point that we went and took out own softdrinks from the fridge. We then waited 20 minutes to make an order of entrees and mains. Our entrees arrived quickly which was great and immediately followed by one our of mains which was strange. The next main didn't arrive until the first person was finished eating (at a snail's pace) and so it went until the fourth person finally ate an hour after the entrees had arrived. We received no apology even after we politely point out that this was not acceptable and the waitress obviously couldn't have cared less. We were not approached to see whether we needed anything, we had to help ourselves to further soft drinks and get out own wine glasses because the waitress didn't offer.

I eat out a lot and to be perfectly frank, while the food was delicious the service was so absolutely atrocious that I will actively dispel people from ever going here. Our evening out was completely ruined as all we could talk about was how horrific the service was. I will NEVER come here again.

Were looking for somewhere different and found it - busy but still very efficient and quick delivery of our orders. Very pleasant helpful staff and a good experience. We will be back soon

I can strongly recommend The Thai Kitchen.. I have been eating there often over the last couple of years and am still always impressed by the food.

I find it hard to believe the several negative reviews on this listing.. Saigon Star is often very busy but I have never found the wait times or service to be an issue..

My personal favourites are their Chicken Lemongrass, Fresh Spring Rolls, and Chrispy Chicken.

Went here for a friends birthday dinner last weekend. After arriving (with a booking), they seated our party of around 12 on two separate tables, when they had tables free to accommodate all of us. Our order wasn't taken for over half an hour and when it was it was by a very rude waitress who seemed to think, perhaps because we were younger than most of the other diners, we didn't matter as much.
I ordered a reasonably priced beef salad, however it took over an hour to arrive, and was the last meal out of my group to be brought out.
At around 9.30pm I went and asked where my meal was, the same waitress who took my order said that it was coming but the beef salad took longer to prepare than other meals (Including soups, fried rice and chicken dishes) which I found very hard to believe.
When my meal finally arrived, everyone else had long finished and had to wait for me.
Definitely not a good experience, wouldn't recommend this restaurant and would never go back

This place is appalling. Went there this evening, staff didn't know anything about Vietnamese cooking, toilets were dirty, service was downright rude and the food took FOREVER ! I am serious. A friend waited one hour for her meal in our group of a dozen or so from the time of oder. This failure on part or this operation, to make matters worst, was my birthday dinner. Quite possibly the worst birthday ever. NEVER GO HERE!!
