I have always been a loyal fan of Kumo and have visited this restaurant many times with my family. Their service has consistently been outstanding, with friendly and welcoming staff who always make me feel at home. Every dining experience has been a pleasure, whether it's the delicious food or the cozy atmosphere, I am always very satisfied. I can confidently say that KUMO is one of my favorite restaurants, and I will definitely visit again. Highly recommended !!!!!

Really good food here! I love the sushi train and all the variety available on it! its also fun to watch it go round as you eat. The made to order menu is also delicious I got the chicken and the spicy ramen and it was really good and super spicy. My only complaint in that the broth could have been a little richer or had a bit more of a meaty broth! The teriyaki chicken was really good and perfectly cooked so I would definitely come back for that. Overall this is a great spot to come with friends or on a date. They also regularly have good deals on their sushi train and do an all you can eat night!

Super yum sushi train. Love this style of dining. It is rather expensive so don’t have a budget if you’re eating here but the fact you can sit down and eat straight away is awesome. All the food I had tasted amazing and was a super easy dining experience.

Great food and friendly staff Definitely a restaurant worthy to come and enjoy!

This was my second visit. And my sons first. We loved it! We both got the lunch special. Sushi plater.. And a couple of things off the sushi train. Service is fantastic. Lovely staff 😊

Japanese restaurant and sushi train. Clean, modern decor. Delicious tasty food. You can order from the menu e.g. Ramen and Sashimi. Or just enjoy the sushi train experience. Price based on different coloured plates. 15% surcharge on Public Holidays. Reservations are recommended, as it can be quite busy

It was excellent. Try their sake. Be mindful of what you pick at the sushi train, it is delicious that you might go over your budget.

The sushi train is fun, and the food is yummy. The lunchtime deal for purple and orange plates is good, but it's still on the more expensive side when it comes to lunch options.

Awesome atmosphere and as for myself most like what I have experienced while living in Japan. Fantastic food, quality products and just a really cool place to go.

So you show up, are seated at a booth or the big long bench, that's when you notice the train of Japanese delicacies rolling by right in front of you! You simply help yourself to what looks and seems delicious (hint: it's all delicious) the colour of the plate tells you how much it costs, at the end your stack of plates indicates how much you pay! It's quirky and fun, great date idea too!

My favorites are Waygu sushi, salmon sushi and eel sushi. Salmon nigiri and salmon and cream cheese rolls are also yummy. Need to hire more waitresses tho, we waited our drink for ages.

Amazing sushi train. Little expensive but you can expect good fresh food.

Absolutely delicious Sushi train with a variety of different dishes - my personal favourites were chicken cranberry sushi, fried squid, fried prawn balls, seared salmon, hokkaido potato croquette, and apple spring roll - yum!! Parking available. If you miss out on a dish then the staff can always place an order for you ☺️

Tasty food and friendly service. The range of sushi and sashimi is quite limited.

A NOTE ON THE PICS: these were taken just after the Covid Level 3 lifting and as such many restaurants were very quiet - hence why there may have been more gaps in the sushi train.

There’s a number of sushi train places scattered around Christchurch and Kumo is one of our favourites.

As you enter Kumo you are greeted by the staff as they call out to you in appreciation of your arrival. There’s 3 types of seating - tables for a-la-carte ordering, a small number of booths positioned beside part of the sushi train and then bar stools just in the other side.

We always try to get a booth but be warned the bar stools will get first pick of the food as it comes out.

There’s a wide selection of sushi, fried foods such as chicken wings, spring rolls, squid etc and also a reasonable range of desserts. If what you are after isn’t appearing you can always order off the conveniently provided menu.

The food is generally hot and they stock up very quickly so there are never many gaps for long. Of course some food disappears faster than others depending on where along the train line you are.

Food is always of very good quality but if you pick a quiet night you’ll get sparse offerings so be warned on that aspect too. A favourite is the Salmon Nigiri with Japanese Mayo. flame seared so it’s just ever so slightly warmed with a smoky flavour.

Kumo is NOT the cheapest of the Sushi Train options in Christchurch but to my mind it’s well worth the price for a bit more peace and quiet and decent quality food.

Tuesdays all you can eat sushi train is definitely worth it.

The rice of sushi nigiri was falling apart when I used chopsticks to hold it. I’m Asian and good with chopsticks, it must be the chef’s problem.

We came here on Tuesday, when the 'all you can eat' was going on. It was $38 per person, and my group ended up being split up since it was a rather large group.

Staff were super accommodating and we were brought a plate of misc. fried foods really quickly, and they were almost too quick with cleaning up our finished plates because we wanted to keep track of how much we ate haha.

I would definitely recommend going to the 'all you can eat' if you want to try out a lot of things. There were a lot of 'unique' kinds of sushi there that were nice to try that I probably wouldn't have otherwise, like a doritos flavour, chicken nugget, and raw octopus. Surprisingly, the dessert they provided was really good. My favourite dish was probably the vegetable tempura.

This is our favorite Sushi Train on the South Island, it is also the only one. We have visited Sushi Trains regularly when we lived in Sydney, some 10 years ago. The food is always fresh and the selection is fantastic. If there is any Sushi you cannot find on the train, ask the staff, and the chef will prepare it for you. We have tried a few of the deserts, they are fantastic too. The staff is very fast and friendly and although they are mostly Asian, they do speak English very well. I'd be happy to recommend Kumo to anyone who likes Sushi. I would estimate that you would pay between $20 and $30 per person, if you are hungry.

Had lunch at Kumo with my son today. It was quite busy but we were seated around the back in front of the sushi train. Its such a great fun way to eat with lots of variety. Quite pricey for a lunch but because it is good quality, fresh and delicious, I would do it again. I had 4 plates and my son had 6. Using the entertainment book brought down the price a little. Because it was busy, the people seated in the booth in front of us seemed to be forever looking in our direction, in fact they were looking at the train which seperated our seats. The only other negative is the well worn chopsticks, they are the plastic variety and you can feel the worn edges when eating. Great staff and very attentive

Dropped in to try my first sushi train with my daughter. Lots of fun and good variety of dishes. Was also impressed with the dessert selection. I ordered miso soup and sashimi off the menu. Will be back.

High end sushi train with interesting fusions. Ate 10 plates for myself in total, one of which was a nacho flavoured sushi which was surprisingly yum.
All other sushi was great and dessert was lovely.
Would recommend for celebrations, not a family environment

I tried the beef tataki, the deep fried chicken, the prawn balls, and the mango chicken. All the food tasted good but I think the prawn balls were my favourite.
I love the idea of the food train but after a while you wish the train would just hurry up and at a certain point you give up on the train and order from the waitress. The wait staff were easy to flag down and they were all friendly and polite.
Unfortunately I didn't get the opportunity to try the dessert I wanted. There were a couple floating around the train but when it came to dessert time the ones I wanted were absent. I asked the waitress and she said once the desserts were gone there were only the other ones on the menu. So if you see a dessert you want I would recommend grabbing it and putting it aside until you want to eat it.
I'm not sure this is a vegetarian friendly kind of place - most of the dishes have fish and seafood.

I must say Kumo is one of my most favorite restaurants in Christchurch. The sushi train was delicious, even though a little pricey. But great quality food and variety worth the money. For a Japanese restaurant in Christchurch the price is actually very cheap, comparing to other Japanese restaurants. The staff was very friendly and approachable. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant is very pleasant. I defiantly recommend the place and will be back many times in the future.

I had heard Kumo was decent from some friends and after experiencing amazing sushi in Japan I felt I had to try it out. I was sadly disappointed.

The size of the sushi was incredibly small, especially for the steep price. $2.80 for a soggy plate of old edamame and $5.50 for two tiny Hotate (scallops) was very expensive and I felt the price for value was not very good. Another issue I have is the quality of rice used - the grains were very small and the seasoning used, if any at all, was lacking in flavour and consistency. Across the board all sushi presented felt small, even the nigiri seemed to be lacking 2/3rds of the rice you would get at other Kaitenzushi restaurants.

If you are looking for authentic, quality Japanese sushi I would suggest avoiding Kumo. The decor is beautiful and the restaurant looks great but sadly the quality of the food doesn't match those standards.

For a sushi-train restaurant, this isn't the most cheaper place since it's the only one in Christchurch so far. However the living standard in Nz & service they provide is worth the price. Both husband & I walked out feeling super full under $62, and plus we ordered their desserts too which was yummy(yes we were greedy :P). I always enjoy Asian desserts/ cakes that aren't too sweet, the sweetness in their desserts are just right for me. Yummy sushi, yummy authentic Takoyaki(octopus balls) that reminded us the ones we had in Japan and great service. It's been my 5th time to dine in here, will definitely come back again :)

Love the sushi train idea!!! Went for lunch the service and food were great. Was a great experience and loved getting to try little bits of all the different sushi, was surprised at how quickly I found myself full as portions didn't look overly big.
La Petite Bobo
Just went here and was pretty underwhelmed. The portion size was extremely small and slightly overpriced. And they tried to charge us $3 for some Mayo with our sushi! It wasn't terrible, just not really worth it :(

I'm so happy that we got our first Sushi Train Restaurant in CHCH after the earthquake. I have to say they did well so far as a new restaurant, food is always keeping fresh, service is nice and the atmosphere is awesome. I've been to lots of Sushi Train restaurant in other countries, compare with the others, the variety of Sushi is not enough for me, I talked with their chef and he told me because they can't get too many ingredients from the local market. The lucky thing is they serve very delicious transitional Japanese dishes as well, that's is very different with the other Sushi Train restaurant Iv been before. Overall, I'm so glad that we have such an unique Japanese restaurant in our city, and I definitely will back again.

What a cool idea. I loved the Sushi Train, your food the variety and freshness. I was full and it only cost me $16. The train has free ginger, Wasabi and I got Gluten free soy sauce. My favorite was the Japanese omelette and seaweed salad. The Philadelphia Sushi is very yum too.

Value 3
Atmosphere 4.5
Service 3.5
Food 3

To me, the food is nothing really special because ive been to so many sushi train in hk, and compare to this they were better and cheaper. the restaurant is very layout is very nice.but food has been placed in on the train for a while coz you can tell the steam inside the plate. service were ok they were very nice but can't take the order probably. we've been waiting for a long time to get our drinks delivered. Food are a bit expensive compared to the value it selves.
