Review Red Bowl Chinese Restaurant - Christchurch

My sister and I took our mum here for mothers day, we've been here plenty of times previously. The food was good as always, however, it was a shame that their service wasn't as great this time around. It was somewhat busy, as expected, however, everyone was given a time limit of one hour to eat, but weren't told of this till 5 mins before the hour was up as they needed the table. You could see some unhappy customers around the room, as they were told they had to leave in a few minutes. Not the greatest experience, however, the food was still tasty!

Absolutely great place. Went there for a birthday, and it was really good. The food was amazing, especially the sweet and sour pork. Waiter was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone.

Food was so yummy! Satay chicken and vegetables was my favourite. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to our large group l.

‘Pretty in pink’ a wholesome joint I could gladly take my mother in law. Highly recommend the pickled cabbage noodles - a stand out dish. Easy to phone ahead for a table. Experienced a generous last minute table. Great layout with a range of seating available from small to large groups. I hear the dim sum / yum cha is quite good and look forward to exploring the menu again soon. Many thanks, Sabine and Connor.

Chanced upon this restaurant. Authentic Chinese food. Great for dim sum too.

This is a lovely Chinese restaurant that the local Chinese go to eat out. That to me says that this is authentic and food, and also I must say that having been to China it IS authentic and delicious! the staff are nice and the price is very competitive.

Delicious food, fast service and friendly staff--an all round winner in my books! Will definitely eat here again when booking for group outings 😋

We went for an early dinner on a friend's birthday, and though strangely quiet, we all thoroughly enjoyed everything - dumplings, wontons, spring rolls for starters, with fried noodles, fried rice, cashew chicken, sweet and sour prawns, and spicy pork. So good that we had to order seconds on the dumplings and fried noodles. Only downside was overeating! As well as great food, the staff was friendly and attentive - highly recommend!

Friendly service and delicious food. We went for a family night out and had a lovely dinner. I especially love the sizzling tofu dish.

The service for lunch today was amazing! Massive shootout to the young lady who served us. She was absolutely the best! A high chair was promptly brought out for our baby without request which was awesome too. Food was great (like super delicious, fresh and just yum), but it is the service that will remain with us. Thank you for such a great experience.

I have visited these guys for a number of years and not once have I had issues with their food, their services of their prices. Great restaurant with great Chinese food! Especially great with a group of people. The large round tables with central turning wheel, and menu options to serve 4, 8 or 10 people is great value for money. We came in with a group of 8 people and ordered the "group serving for 8" on the menu. Heaps of food and there was plenty left over! Our waitress was great also and a good laugh :) Would highly recommend.

Seven of us went to Red Bowl for Yum Cha. This place is my daughter's favorite yum cha place for several years. I noticed a few dishes they offered in the past are not available but still a good range. The staff were friendly though there seems to be short of staff but understandable if you know most restaurants are having the same issues in the hospitality industry. We had a good time and will go back!

Crispy skin Peking Duck with condiments is delicious. Its second course is stir-fried duck meat with bean sprouts. Service staff are not as attentive but typical for any Chinese restaurants.

Pretty decent Chinese Restaurant. Prices are average and food is not too bad. Have been here multiple times, decor is relatively new and service is good.

Cant fault this venue for authentic Chinese cuisine, I love the lunch yum cha selection. Tasty little portions that are served quickly and very well priced. This place has everything you would expect from a nice family run restaurant.

Been here multiple times. Their Chinese/HK cuisine is pretty authentic and they do quite a good dim sum. Their deep fried squid is tasty and done right. Also recommend their shumai, various dumplings, chasiu buns, and their tofu dish. As for sweets their custard buns and egg tarts are pretty nice too. One thing to note is the food is a tad on the oily side. Suitable for a family outing or a large group get together. They have a lot of seating and space and a family friendly atmosphere. The service however can be pretty terrible and there's this one very rude female staff to watch out for.

Been here twice now for yum cha. It is cheap and cheerful if you are needing an Asian food fix. Some plates are better than others though in the end not sure much of it is made in house. For a cheap meal without frills I would recommend it.

Good fast service but the food was pretty bad. The squid entree was so overcooked it took a lot of chewing to get it down. The sweet & sour chicken left a lot to be desired - it tasted awful. The only part of the meal that was average & that we were kind of happy to eat was the lamb & coriander.

When I arrived I was still waiting for a while for my friend who was joining me, so was hoping someone might come over and tend to me in the mean time, but no, I had to flag someone down - eventually - and then I ordered a sauvignon blanc. My friend arrived as did my wine, and I thought it looked off, and as I tried it realised it was a Chardonnay. I said to the waitress that I'd ordered the sav and this was a Chardonnay when she came over and she looked at me like, 'what do you want me to do about it?' So I actually had to tell her to take it back and swap it. Not a good start. We ordered a starter and our mains, took a long time to receive the entree, then they bought us a wrong dish and just hung around our table not knowing where it went. My main was actually pretty good, which was the pork belly stir fry, I'd recommend it. My friend ordered the beef and cashew nuts and said that was lovely and tender. When we went up to pay, we wanted to split the bill and this seemed like the biggest issue in the entire universe. We were blatantly talked about in front of us in their language, and in what looked a quite aggressive manner. All in all, the food was pretty nice, definitely recommend for a takeaway, but be prepared if you are dining in.

We tried this place because we had a voucher from the entertainment book. All I can say was this place is fantastic. The waiter was so helpful, he asked us if we had any questions about the dishes etc and explained everything perfectly. The food was amazing!!! My partner ordered the honey pork and said it was his favorite one so far (he gets it every time we have Chinese). We had the best Chinese we have had in a long time and even returned the next night to take my parents out for dinner. Once again, the staff were friendly and up for a laugh with us and we were not disappointed with any of the five dishes we chose (including the honey pork again). We have defiantly found our new Chinese local :)

We ate dinner here last friday and it was amazing!! I ordered the chicken noodles, my partner got the fried rice and prawns, and the kids shared a plate of sweet and sour chicken. Everything was amazing and huge servings. We came home and ate the left overs the next day for lunch. It was a great meal at a great value!

5 Star! 5 star! 5 Star! What more can I say than 5 Stars! What are all these mad bads posting about sharks fin soup for? What's the difference between eating a sharks fin or a cow's hind leg? Anyways back to the point. Service was magnificent. Better than most Chinese restaurants in the Christchurch area. The food was so appetizing and appealing to the eye 5 stars. For the price I paid for my meals I felt bad as I personally felt that I was undercutting them because it was 5 stars. Will be back soon and many more times to try the whole menu. All in all: 5 Stars.

I've dined at the Red Bowl a few times and it can be a bit hit and miss, fortunately most of the occasions I've ventured over there it's been okay.

The Red Bowl is a pretty big place and in the evening it can be incredibly busy so booking is probably a good idea.

The setting is fairly cliche for a Chinese Restaurant, the usual lazy susans, chinese lamps, etc. Staff are usually pretty attentive but there are generally some hiccups that you get from time to time, such as:
* Meals/Entrees arriving in an illogical way i.e. rice for meal arriving before entrees, or having one person receive their main while the other waits a ridiculous amount of time
* We've had an item forgotten and have seen this happen with others as well
* Very little time before meals, sometimes meals arriving while you're still eating entrees

While those are some of the downsides we've experienced, the food for the most part has been fantastic. The garlic beans are great and the rest of the fare pretty good, at least the times that I have been there.

Recommended, but best book in advance and go there while they are busy.

After many recommendations I went with a group of friends to try this place out. Either there is a lack of Chinese Restaurants in Christchurch for people to compare, or the folk of Christchurch have no idea what a decent meal is.
Deep fried garlic prawns were so under-cooked that the batter was still gluggy. The plate also arrived with a garnish of what appeared to be semi-fried breadcrumbs piled on top of the prawns.
The wontons were no better with the filling equating to almost half a teaspoon of next to nothing.
I will never return here.

I went to dinner with friends last night. Excellent food excellent service. Peking duck is exceptionally good. My friends all enjoy it and will definitely go back. Garlic pawns are delicious too. My friends said they will order those Chinese vege and beans again (sorry can't remember the names of those Chinese vege but they are delicious). A+++++

Loved the food! The service was charming. Hubby and I went on a Tuesday night and ordered the Spicy Salty Squid and the Spicy Chicken with Vegetables and steamed rice. DE-LI-CIOUS!!!! Generous helpings . Couldn't finish everything so asked for a "doggy bag". The place was full for a weeknight. No surprises there. The food was so yummy. We will visit again to sample their Yum Cha sometime soon.

We ate here 2 weeks ago, one of the best Chinese meals we've had in a long time. The service was very fast considering the restaurant was packed out. The only down side was that it was very noisy. We would go back but later in the evening.
