Review Velvet Burger - Christchurch

Updated: Velvet Burger has a chilled and relaxed atmosphere on a busy week day. The Burgers are smashed, which is a style of cooking that originated in the States and progressively has become more and more prevalent in New Zealand. Personally, I prefer that my meat patties are not smashed to smithereens- But, that's me! I had the OG (i.e. Original) Beef Burger. The ingredients were fresh and quite appetizing as well as the bread patties. Since, I was a little bit more peckish, I opted for another Burger- This time, I went for a cheaper and mini sized option, The Mini Animal Rights. As one may have guessed, this one doesn't contain meat but a pattie made of Kumara and coriander. How original! The flavours profile was not the same as the first one, however, it's an healthier option for sure. Great service from Zack, the manager, who incidentally didn't overcharge me for a bigger patties in a mini sized burger bun- And, let's not forget about Alex too! Highly recommended, if you like gourmet burgers like I do.

Was not busy when we went, well priced for what it is, and very fast and friendly service. Very filling and tasted great. Also were very accommodating to modifications on the burger. Only suggestion would be writing on the menu what the salad on the burger actually is (it had tomato, cucumber and lettuce). Edit: Turns out the salad is outlined on the menu on the wall (tomato, cucumber, lettuce and red onion).

IT WAS REALLY GOOD!!! The buns were soft, loved the patties, fries were fresh and crispy, paired with their awesome habanero sauce. Definitely will go back for 2nd, 3rd, 4th.... time.

Nice buggers and their Tuesday deal 2-4-1 is bang on for buck. I loved their King Saddleback burger (pulled pork), Big Bro (must try) and Queen go Peep (braised lamb) they all taste good, so is the Luxe Bird (southern fried chicken patty). I liked the buns in fact they're soft, fluffy and goes well with any patty. Also, the burgers are good in size that one would expect with a good pack size burger patty for that price with salad and sauce filling. Overall a good & friendly service with nice tasty burgers 😋👍.

Always love velvet burger! And the tasty favourite of mine the BABE!!!! Yesterday we ordered online the two for 1 deal since you have to order online and put in the promo code to receive the deal! Very excited! We ordered chips at the counter aswell and waited. After half n hour of not getting our food, they finally let us know that the gas turned off and they trying to fix it and get it back on so they can continue cooking. We were really hungry at this point and after about 15-20 minutes later! We finally got our burgers and then our fries 5-10 mind after. And they also gave us a refund for our fries for waiting! They handled the situation very well!

Went for a BYO was such amazing service. Highly recommend we went on Saturday 14/10 and the team were all very happy and brought amazing energy to the restaurant! defiantly will be returning !!

Enjoyed the burger, it was delicious, but feel like a sturdier bun is required to hold all the filling, less chance of it falling apart. The service was great and friendly. The atmosphere was flat, maybe as it was a cold night. Would definitely go again

Can't go wrong with the 2 for 1 deal on Tuesday nights! The burgers are always solid and if you order online, you can skip the queues.

Couldn't believe I hadn't tried this place until now. The staff were so amazing! Great atmosphere, clean, comfy, great vibe and our food was made super quick and was absolutely delicious 😋 definitely coming back 5☆

Excellent burger - as usual: quick service, yummy burger, good music! Make sure you get the kumara fries aside as they're SO delicious!!! I had the Veg8 (vegan burger) and loved it. Was a big burger with a crunchy 'beef', crispy lettuce, 'cheese', etc. All good!

We Used uber to order our dinner to home lastnight. We ordered 2x velvet lady. I wasn’t expecting such large burgers & Was far too large to finish and wasn’t too bad in taste. Loved the sweet relish. Would recommend.

Love their 241 Tuesdays. Note that the 241 deal is available only if you order it online. Fav all time burger is the big bro. The big bro burger we got today were missing the portobello mushrooms but otherwise it was yum.

Good food as always. Nice flavours in meat. Ordered thick cut chips but given thin ones. Not a major but still nice to get what you ordered. Friendly staff. Person was flat out since other staff member on break. Sunday night 11/6.

My husband and I got burgers from here and they were pretty good! We'll definitely be returning at some point. The fries were so good!

The burgers are great in general. Service is good. I miss the mushroom burger though - it was delicious! I wish they would bring it back!! The animal rights vege option is not quite as nice.

we got the gone burger and the velvet lady burger. they where both very tastey. we dined after the lunch rush so service was fast and friendly. will definitely come back.

Really not sure why there's so much hype about this place. I've been dying to try it for ages so was excited to finally have it for dinner tonight! Sadly the food was disappointing...popcorn chicken was hard as rocks...and for over $10!? The chicken in the burger was so oily and hard, I only ate half and then threw it away...I definitely wouldn't recommend going here

It's not the fault of the burger itself. All wrong is the staff. When I entered, three of them were in the kitchen being not that friendly. One male staff came over to speak to me. I am a foreigner visiting here could hardly understand what he said especially he spoke so fast. He spoke to me with food in his mouth, and the more terrible thing is that he almost "forced" me to order chips even drink, apologised to me after I asked if the price for the big bro concludes the chips(absolutely not) but the way he speaks is "do you like skinnies or fatties".. well this meal is the first meal I have in Christchurch after I landed. Perhaps I got this experience just because I am Chinese.

Love these guys burgers. I go every 2 weeks with my mate and get the Gone Burger. I can recommend this place. Check out their Facebook page for promotions like 2 for 1 etc..

Velvet Burger has changed my look on what is classified a 'great burger' and with the best fries and garlic aioli, this place is a must, for all burger connoisseurs. Velvet Burgers atmosphere is most certainly an ideal place to share a meal with some friends while indulging in fries much better than McDonald's. The extensive variety of burgers had me tossing up between many flavours. The burger itself was simply delicious. I myself don't eat burgers but this place is a great takeaway or midnight feed for anyone. Though you may be tempted to purchase a much cheaper burger down the rd at KFC or McDonalds, keep in mind that these burgers are made with care.

I had the Sag with fatties. The burger was okay, not great. The fatties needed a little bit more seasoning. Not a deal breaker for me. Would certainly give them another go.

They try to be a fancy gourmet burger place, but the burgers just aren't good enough. They're better than McDonalds, but not as good as Burger Fuel, Burgers and Beers, or Burger Wisconsin.<br/><br/>Some of their menu is legitimately pretty good (the namesake Velvet Burger for one), but many of their burgers suffer from blandness (squawk dawg, which strangely *isn't* a chicken burger...), dry patties, weird ingredients (cucumber in the salad!?), strange condiments, or average quality buns.<br/><br/>They're still decent, big burgers. The sides are fine. But I just wish they were a bit better.<br/><br/>2 for 1 Tuesdays is great, as are their Grababurger specials, and at those prices they are legitimately good value. But then, Burgers and Beers' specials are just as good, and their regular prices are (with the exception of a couple of burgers) also just as good...

Great burgers, with a good range to choose from! If you're really hungry then there's a burger that will fill you up, unlike other burger places. Tasty, fresh and presented well. The fries are good too, and portion size is great. Costs more than Burger King, etc. But you get what you pay for; far better quality burgers.<br/><br/>

Visited Riccarton rd shop as first time customer. Was told order would take 15-20 mins. Order took 35 mins. Shop was full of students - quite noisy. Chips were fantastic. Burger was awful - was given wrong burger. Ruined by putting blue cheese on it. If I liked blue cheese I would have ordered one with it in. I HATE BLUE CHEESE. Not impressed at all. Won't bother to go back.

Had the opportunity to dine at this joint, yesterday. After a comedy night show thought of picking up a burger for dinner and it's usually McDonald's for me as it closer to home, but the person who dropped me after the show went farther away from McDonald's to find a good spot to pull over. Then that's where I saw this place, a few have mentioned it earlier and so decided to give it a try. It was Friday night and literally no crowd. As soon as I walked in, the waiter / cashier was like "HEY there, how you doing today" and after I told her it was my fist time at velvet burger she asked me if I had something in mind for dinner, like chicken or beef. Then since I suggested chicken she patiently walked me through the chicken burgers of menu and what they are made of and wow that's some serious customer service. I chose the BABE burger, which was a combination of Crumbed Chicken Breast, Salad, Bacon, Pineapple and Cheese with aioli. I love pineapples in my food. So I added some skinny fries and aioli and it all added up to 18 NZD. After I got my order, "That's a big burger", atleast for that day's appetite. Now to the taste, the chicken in the burger was perfectly cooked, crisp and juicy. The bread was soft and tender. The pineapple added a sense of sweet to the chicken and sour aioli. I loved the way the sweet pineapple and the chicken tasted together. However after a while almost towards the end with a couple of bites left. It became really saturated with the sweet and I was reluctant to finish it, the sweetness of the fruit simply took the upper hand and it was hard to finish. But I would probably love the have the burger with less or no pineapple, next time. The aioli for the fries was good too. <br/><br/>Overall I think it was a good meal and would come back for more to try something new of the menu. Very good points for the hospitality of the waiter and the cook, Good points for the perfectly cooked crispy chicken. <br/><br/>

The vegetarian kumara and coriander burger is amazing! The burgers and sides are good value for money. Seating is not suitable for larger groups (over 6 people) as the restaurant is quite small.

Friendly service despite the fact that they are often packed. Very nice burgers. I'm particularly a fan of the Velvet Lady. Lovely chips as well. Not a perfect experience but well worth it for the price.

The place was absolutely packed but my order arrived quickly. I enjoyed my veggie burger and the aioli that came with the chips was nice. Nothing overly exceptional but for the price you pay it's a good experience.

I have to agree with Nigel B. on this. <br/>The patty in the Big Bro burger, which I had half of for lunch today, was mushy. Why on earth?? Just tasted of grease and onions. Mushy beetroot. The best thing about VB was the Fatties chips, which I had with chili mayo and regular tommy sauce. For $16 for the Big Bro it was too expensive for such a meh burger. And $4.50 for a 300ml bottle of coke is an absolute rip off. Burger Wisconsin does a better burger for nearly half the price.<br/><br/>I've had burgers from Burgers and Beers and was disappointed (bland). I've had a beef burger at Wendy's (bland). I've had burgers from Burgers Wisconsin (tasty with that charred taste from the grill). I've had burgers at Denny's, too. But what does it say about those restaurants when Dennys is the one that does the tastiest burger?<br/><br/>Definitely not value for money.

Had great burgers for lunch yesterday. I had The Stag - venison with mushrooms and blue cheese. heather had the Velvet lady - chicken and stuff. Both delighted. Tasted great. Good size portions. Skinny fries great too. Not cheap, but good value. Would be better if they had decent wine tho'. Will be back!

Over $60 spent on food for 3 people, when asking for tomato sauce I was asked for money... Food tasted great though, unfortunately being nickel and dime'd left a bad taste in my mouth.

We visited the Christchurch branch and got two take away burgers (one was chicken) and chips and when we got home the chicken burger had no chicken in it. We phoned up and received apologies and the promise to send out some vouchers. Many weeks on and we are still waiting for the vouchers to be sent out. The chips were good with lots of aioli but I couldn't comment on the chicken burger!! So on the whole I have not been impressed with Velvet Burger and will not be back any time soon.

The burgers were ok, nothing particular special though. I was really looking forward to trying these burgers as Velvet Burgers are from Dunedin originally and heard a few good things about them. But, yeah they're not bad but I've had better. Would I go back? Yeah, maybe, not sure. I thought the burger and fries would be better than I got - perhaps I was expected too much based on the hype.
