Review May's Thai - Christchurch

Binoli Goonatillake
Absolutely beautiful food. I ordered the drunken spicy noodles and the flavors were amazing. The portion sizes were also unusally big for the price. The server was really calm and attentive and made this already delightful experience even better. Only thing is I wish there was desert and more options for drinks but I understand why this may not be possible. What they already do, they do impeccably.

We always order a mid-week take out treat of their Roast Pork Pad Thai and Chicken Green Curry. Medium Heat. $48. Excellent. I reckon one of best in town. Also handy for bottle store next door. Easy parking outside for strip mall on corner of Wairakei and Greer's opposite the LBJ Pub. Top Thai. 👍

Got takeaway for dinner and it was outstanding, fresh, full of flavour and quantities were spot on, spicy chicken and curry puffs to start then Spicy Drunken noodles with crispy pork belly and Penang chicken curry! Everything was beautiful, will definitely be back again…..and again

I was unsure about trying Tarns as really enjoyed Mays. Fear of the unknown and all that. But OMG! The dishes were beautiful. Both exceeded expectations. Well done chef!!! Totally recommend! We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Consistently great Thai....has been our fave for a while. After disappointing Padthai while in Aus recently, came back to the very best Chicken PadThai last night. Thankyou❤️

Delicious and authentic! Great prices and portion sizes

Very authentic Thai cuisine. We had the fried chicken which were juicy, the flavourful spicy duck curry and phadthai noodles We will definitely patronize again. Highly recommended.

Wow what a great find! My husband and I got the Chicken cashew dish and the Spicy Duck and pork belly egg fried noodles… both were incredibly delicious, packed full of flavour. Highly recommend!

One of our favorite Thai place. You should try their Panang and Red Curry, Pad Thai, Cashew Stir fry, Drunken Noodles and the Stir fry with ginger sauce at a reasonable price. 👍👍👍

Being close to this restaurant was a big part of the reason we purchased our current house. Best Thai in chch by far!! Excellent friendly staff. If I had to find a fault, it would only be that it seems the word is out these days, and they are often busy, which means sometimes it can be hard to get a table or waits can be a bit long (but still always totally worth it)

Most delicious Thai food I’ve ever had. Ordered from them on a whim and I’m so glad i did. I had the ginger chicken and 7/7 would recommend 👌🏼

The food we ordered was excellent. Good gf options and good friendly service. They don't have a liquor license but that's fine we were there for the food. The duck was really, really good Definitely going back.

Very yum and spicy salads, service with a smile, will be back.

Our go to Thai - friendly family business. Highly recommend.

Gorgeous curry the best I've ever had, The duck was cooked to perfection and the curry was fresh and so full of flavour and premium ingredients it was actually an experience rather than just dinner.

So happy to be able to return to our favourite local takeaway. The food and service are always amazing. Love the Pork phad thai and Duck red curry as well as many others. Also love using the dine in for a regular friends catch up in a cosy environment. Thank you Tarn for your little treasure in our neighbourhood.😃👍👍

Fantastic Thai restaurant, we mainly use for takeaways but is great to eat in as well. Pleasant atmosphere, food is superb, a favorite being the crispy pork. Prices are very reasonable too, average of $18 per main. And is BYO which helps. Give it a go you won't be disappointed :-)

A hidden gem of Christchurch. Friendly staff and lovely food. May, the chef, is very meticulous about the quality and freshness of ingredients, especially veges. Try crispy pork and ask for the crispy skin and juicy inside - it's amazing (dining-in recommended for best taste). May is flexible with dietary requirements (advance notice needed), and he served a very challenging group of my friends (GF, Vegetarian and various allergies, halal, you name it) to everyone's satisfaction (except for the nut allergy -Thai without peanut is no longer Thai...). Cozy and tidy - restroom is clean and BYO is convenient! (next door is a liquor shop)

This is our new favourite Thai restaurant. You might miss it when you drive past it but it is well worth a visit. Great taste, big portions and reasonably priced.

I absolutely love May's Thai. I am a Burnside local and enjoy their food regularly. All of their curries are amazing and they make them with fresh ingredients and real heat. The meat is always high quality and cooked perfectly. The chef's choose flavorful seasonal combinations of vegetables to complement your chosen meat if you're ordering a curry. The green curry has to be my favorite but I highly recommend trying the red the yellow and also the spicy duck curries. Staff are friendly professional and consistent and the ambiance is very inviting and also quite refreshing for the area.

Average Thai restaurant. Came here for dinner, food was nothing special and had way too much sugar. Will not be returning to this restaurant again.

We've had takeaways from May's Thai several times now and are yet to be disappointed. Thoroughly impressed at the sheer amount of food they put in their curries! While their prices are slightly higher than most comparable shops, I'm yet to feel as though I didn't get my money's worth due to the large meal size, easily enough for two meals. The curries are absolutely spot-on.. I've settled on their take of the Mus mun as my favourite meal, although their pumpkin Wontons come a close second!

The shop is small and normally quiet with good parking, wait times have never been more than 10-15mins and the staff are always very pleasant to deal with.

Had some takeaways from here today, the pad Thai wasn't made with rice noodles was highly disappointing, the flavour was fine but not authentic. We also ordered a yellow curry which lacked flavour, but the heat was good.

Great for takeaway meal, sadly the interior lets it down a little, otherwise lovely food and friendly staff. Price is about the same as every other Thai place.

Well we love Thai and decided to give May's a go. I'm by no means a Thai novice. I've been to Thailand a few times. I have Thai friends over there that I've eaten out with so my expectations were not high.

So we ordered takeaway (didn't have a menu, so called in to get the lay of the land). Lady that answered the phone was very pleasant...asked the type of thing that I wanted (curry) and then went onto explain what was on offer. My order: Yellow curry (Thai hot) and Pad Thai (duck and pork). Then went onto order starters (spring rolls and won tons).

Picked up the order (very well packaged brown paper bag which we couldnt wait to open). Once home I'mwere so impressed by the presentation and the smells were pretty good too.

Our opinion: Curry pretty good. Nothing out of this world but enjoyable. The Pad Thai is OUTSTANDING. Best you'll get in Christchurch (arguably what I've tried in Thailand). The starters were lovely although wontons could do with more filling and expect them to be quite sweet.

Ours were takeaways so I'm going back there to experience May's piping hot and restuarant style. I have to personally give this place my gold star of Thai Chrithurch food - I can't recommend this enough. All in all it was approx. $57 of dinner goodness. Well worth it and then some we thought...

I’ve only ever had takeaways from here, but I can’t fault it. Quality is excellent, full of flavour and always delicious.

Chicken and Cashew, most of the curries, Pad Thai – exactly as they should be.

It’s not cheap like your local Chinese takeaway, but it IS worth the extra – highly recommended.

We got a takeaway from Mays after a friend recommended the place. We arrived just on closing so decided to take away. I ordered Crispy Pork and Crispy Duck Pad Thai and it was absolutely superb. The pork was tender with crispy crackling, and the Duck was lovely,in large pieces. The pad thai sauce was one of the best I have tasted. Would definitely dine here again!

A very good suburban Thai restaurant - perfect for a last minute evening meal decision when the takeaway menus come out of the kitchen cupboard. Very good food and a varied menu, including their own signature dishes. Although the dishes are a very high quality, I haven't been 'wowed' yet (eg: like the pineapple rice at Zab Thai) but I will definitely work my way through their menu and see what if that x-factor dish is there. Happy to recommend to others and I will be back for more.

Very good food, very good service, very good value for money.
I have been 4-6 times now and each time is thoroughly enjoyable. The place may be small, but has a big heart. Going tonight again in about an hour. .
