Review Fernielea Licensed Cafe - Coatesville

Johnathan Teh
We enjoyed our quiet lunch here one weekday. We ordered from the menu and were not disappointed. Servers were very welcoming and attentive. We loved the fact that we could dine outdoors while still being sheltered.

Very nice cafe in the centre of Coatesville. New big parking lot. The building looks small from the road, but is actually quite big, with several rooms, big verandah and a few tables in the garden (with a playground). The coffee and slices were nice, and we did not have to wait long for them. Thanks!.

Seafood risotto and lamb mince pie are really tasty. Also enjoy the outside shade area which is perfect for summer!

Great food love the lamb pie and seafood risotto, nice outdoor area, friendly staff. Will definitely come back!

This is an amazing place. Excellent location nestled in forest with amazing rural forestry feeling. Staff are so friendly and food was amazing. Eggs Beni was mind blowing 🥰

Was passing through the area and was a great cafe and food was awesome. A long wait for food unfortunately but will definitely visit again when in the area

Came here for lunch with my partner, Russell, on sunday. The fish was melting in our mouths and the beer batter was light and crispy. It was so good that my partner, after eating his steak sandwich and a good portion of my fish, ordered another fish and chips for us to share.<br/>Cant wait to come again for the fish. Truely legendary. I left a note thanking the chef and asked the waitress to tell the chef that we thought it was amazing.<br/>On a different note although the staff were very friendly they need to create a better system for getting meals and drinks to the correct table. Several times we saw our food and drinks do rounds of the restaurant and be offered to different tables. We eventually got our food and drinks by flagging the poor girl down.

We sat outside in the garden area, must be beautiful on a warm summers day. I ordered the smashed avocado, not much avo given, strange since I ordered the smashed avo. My friends ordered the roast field mushrooms. Nothing absolutely amazing, all very average.

Forever my #1. Best cafe around! Never disappoints. The staff are so welcoming and friendly, the food - AMAZING. It’s always hard choosing something from the menu each time because everything is too good. Can not recommend this place enough!
Matthias Anderson
Great Cafe! The food is always amazing, and the staff are excellent and super friendly, especially one of the waiters, Matt I think his name is. One of the best waiters I've ever met.
Jayne Clarke
Good food, clean and tidy with friendly staff. A bit of a wait for food but going at a busy time doesn’t help. Would go back if in the area.

The cafe is lovely, service is nice, coffee and dishes are delicious here, but the kids playground is so dirty and poor! I hope the owner can fix the trampoline cause it is not safe for kids play there!

My absolute favourite place for brunch! Best food and coffee out, and they go above and beyond for private functions. Highly recommended 10/10

Every time I go to fernilea I order something different from the menu and it is always amazing! Good quality, well cooked food and fantastic service! The staff are always friendly and the owner Rain is very accommodating! I loved the place so much that I also held my birthday function there and it was like a fairytale! The wood fire pizzas are a hit with the guests! Can not recommend this place enough ❤️

Today is the last day of my break until I go back to work so my partner figured it would be nice to enjoy the sunny weather and have some brunch. We drove down to Fernielea as it had good reviews on Zomato.<br/><br/>The cafe is very cute with plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the sunshine and a playground for the little ones. I ordered a BLT and brownie to share with my partner. <br/><br/>The BLT was fresh and simple, bacon was cooked until crispy but still juicy and the salad had a nice bite to it. Shoe string fries are standard - can never go wrong. <br/><br/>Brownie had almost a cake like texture but still tasted great and wasn’t overly sweet. <br/><br/>Overall great spot to bring friends and have brunch during the summer time!

AMAZING!! I was always a bit hesitant to come here but we finally did & it was super delicious! The ladies were so lovely & in such a good mood it made our visit that much better. Even had a little fur baby come and visit me at the table which was super cute. Over all this place was just perfect to be honest 😊 We will most definitely be back 👍🏼

Absolutely love coming here with my dad and sister, it's a special treat for us and every time I go there I leave in a fantastic mood. Last weekend we went there and Fernie the cat came to sit next to me and helped my mood even more. We are hoping to come for dinner someday soon and I definitely want to try the lamb rack, but I keep missing out because it's gone so quick. Great Food, Amazing Coffees and a homely, relaxing atmosphere that kicks my CPTSD on a bad day. Fernielea is my families number one cafe.<br/> And I really hope I get to see Fernie again.

I come here a few times a week and it's such a lovely place!! The atmosphere is so welcoming, the coffee is great and the staff are so kind and sweet! Highly recommend!! If you want a go to weekly coffee stop come here. It always brightens my day :)<br/>

Lovely little cafe, super friendly staff. Only reason for 4 stars is I feel the coffee is a bit over priced and there aren’t prices listed anywhere for them which could be why? I had a basic iced coffee of espresso and milk and was charged $7.50 and later a regular latte with flavor which costed $6? Seems awfully steep for coffee but maybe because there are few options around. Unsure but regardless it’s a lovely cafe and great staff. Would recommend :)

I will definitely be back.I had the Chef's special of pork belly, delicious is a word to descibe this meal. I absolutely loved everything about this place, Atmosphere, food, coffee the lot. I've got a list of people to bring back with me. So good.

I have been here twice and have always been happy with the service , I love the design on the coffees , last time I went I had the the salad and we very impressed with the size for the money that I paid for
Sam Pervan
Been there twice, food is great and unique, coffee have very cute designs, service isn't the best though as they don't ask how your food is, but would go there again :)

Fab service and vg food. Went yesterday for lunch. Service and selection of food could not be faulted. I had a very generous serving of seafood pasta while my wife had salmon with roasted tomatoes (she was not very hungry). Very tasty and the waitress brought out knee rugs as we were sitting outside with our doggie. Also we took some of their pies home for dinner and they too were very good.

Went here for birthday lunch a couple of weeks ago...My daughter ordered BLT Fries and a smoothie...As she was eating she found a long dark hair in her meal...I told the owner decreetly...She came over and said sorry...Usually we find them (hair) in the lettuce...🙁🙁 and said I wont charge you for BLT... Completely put off her meal my daughter didnt touch anything or her smoothie....When we went to pay...She charged for my meal and also fries and smoothie for my daughter which she didnt touch...very disappointing service...Wont be going back or recommending...

Came here with a mate and her daughter on the weekend just past. Lots of parking available. Upon arriving we walked up some stairs to what looked like a house cum cafe/restaurant which was quite cool. There were plenty of indoor and outdoor seating arrangements available. There was also a baby/toddler play area indoor. The indoor/outdoor seating on the deck(covered at the time) had throws on all the chairs, which I thought was a really sweet idea so you can keep warm.  Available to purchase was a sweets/cakes area and a chilled food cabinet, also a cooked options menu. Also available were all types of beverages, alcoholic included. <br/><br/>We ended up dining outside near the playground. Between us 3 we ordered:Cajun Chicken Burger, Caramel Milkshake, Cowboy Baked Beans, Jim Beam and Coke, Hotcakes and kids drink. I was impressed with my burger and milkshake. Best part for me was the aioli sauce, so good, bigger portion than I was expecting also. My friend liked her Cowboy Baked Beans. I got to have a bite and it definitely tastes better than just the standard baked beans that you get out of a can. My friends daughter was happy with her Hot Cakes. Although they only put a drizzle of maple sauce on originally, we asked for extra and they were happy to oblige. <br/><br/>Other noteworthy things: Smoking allowed onsite outdoors, they supplied a clean ashtray. Appreciated. I also made a kitty friend, apparently her name is Fernie and is the resident cat here. So adorable and friendly. We had a buy one main get one main free coupon, so saved $15. I would love to come back here, the kid friendly atmosphere makes it easy to dine out and keep the kids entertained. The food also tasted good. I would recommend as a nice place to go and relax for a meal or some drinks.

I ordered their field mushroom for breakfast. I liked the sauce used and the mushrooms were very tender and cooked to perfection. I thought the potato fritter was a little too hard for my liking, but other than that, the food was delicious. <br/>:) <br/>The staff were friendly, just one concern I had was: Special times of the year Fernielea can get pretty busy, but customers don't like to feel rushed to eat. I feel that's what happened today when they started clearing plates on our table before everyone was done eating. In less than 5 minutes of seating at our table (which we booked a week in advance) a staff told us to make our minds quick on the order as there will be a booking for the table after us! <br/><br/>Anyway, I understand it can get busy and hectic. <br/>I'm happy at least the food was nice :)

Excellent customer service!Food 50/50!Lovely Setting!Would go back for coffee and cabinet foods though!<br/>Love that it's kid friendly! And what makes it even better it's closer to home..............

Had been here a few times but the last visit has put me off ever going back. Ordered pizzas and was told they'd be ready to pick up in 20 minutes, drove down to get them and they said they would be another 5 mins, waited 15 minutes and was again told they were almost ready, kept waiting in this fashion for over an hour! They even told me they were 'in the oven' at one point when they clearly weren't. After much pushing (and the over an hour wait) I was given said pizzas and a free cake thing I assume by way of apology, to be honest I would have expected my order for free based on the horrible experience. To add insult to injury the pizzas were raw! Don't bother.

Very beautiful environment for a lovely weekend brunch. We sat in the garden and got some coffee and some cabinet food. <br/><br/>When our coffee arrived we were thrilled with their coffee art☕. The cheesecake 🍰 was nice so as the scone. I believe when you are in a good mood all food taste nice. Thanks my friend for bringing me here ♥
Sarah Palmer
Great setting, food was very good, chicken and avocado salad was excellent. Good service too. Only thing that could be improved is the playground is a little run down and could do with a shade sail. Otherwise a great cafe. I'll be back for sure.
Arielle Walker
Delicious food (with Millers coffee), lovely countryside setting - but still quick and easy to get to from the city - and fantastic, friendly service!
Robert Vautier
Country café feel and location is only thing going for this place. "Playground" broken  and worn out. Food stingy and terrible quality. Unhelpful staff and bugs that when asked, no one wanted to do anything about!
Nargy
Love this place.. staff are so friendly, food is delicious and super quick to arrive.. would definitely recommend for a lazy sunday brunch.. have never been disappointed.
Caitlin
Came to Fernalea this morning with my partner. I think the service here is so friendly and the food comes so promptly! Everything always tastes so fresh and the price point is reasonable. The portion sizes always leave me satisfied and they do THE BEST COFFEES!<br/>A great place for kids as there is a play ground. The whole cafe is spacious and I love to sit next to the hot fire.<br/>Perfect place to come for brunch or a coffee/cake - the slices are TO DIE FOR and there's always so many to choose from. <br/><br/>Would recommend :)
Richard Ransfield
Pleasant surroundings had the mushrooms with hash nice, coffee, and service good,a comfortable experience thankyou!! If in the area next time well be back!

I always come here to catchup with girlfriends and also to catchup on much needed work via laptop. It's a world away from the hustle and bustle but close to Albany depending on which direction you come from, for me I come the Riverhead end.<br/><br/>It's nestled in trees with a rustic deck looking over the garden where kids can play. They have little blankets draped over old wooden chairs for the chillier months which I think is wonderful.<br/><br/>The food is amazing and coffee is great! I always have a slice with coffee you will not be disappointed. Free range and local fresh produce.

Such great Cafe, friendly staff.Love the fig white choc muffin they had today.how amazing...and the brunch was so good as usual.x.o.x.o.......

The menu was varied and food good, but at a table for 10 it was embarrassing for 4 or 5 of the guests to have finished their meal before the last 3 were even served.  We had to ask for the last girl's meal and even then it took 5 minutes for a simple bowl of fries to come out. There was another big table behind us who were receiving their food at the same time - too many guests to be served at once.
Kelly Sanderson
Lovely cafe. I visited with a friend and our children as it was a beautiful sunny day and it's easy with the playground and nice outdoor area, turns out they would have been just as happy inside with the toy train set. The staff were all very friendly and service was quick. We both had a ice coffee and chicken salad which were very enjoyable. Will be back again.
Melissa Mathieson
Perfect garden setting to relax and have brunch. Super attentive wait staff, delicious coffee, wide variety of meals and at a good price. Will be adding this place to the list of the regular cafes to visit.

Always good, the last time  I visited was with a friend and our two daughters after going to the coatesville market. They were busy so we sat on a picnic table in the gardens. the food was prompt, the service excellent which included delivery of complimentary blankets which we didn't use but was a nice touch and the drinks great.  As has it been on the many occasions which our family has joined others from breakfast which is my favourite meal here. Will be back of course
Jade Young
Love the garden as well as their cute as bear and piggy coffee! A wonderful place to go for families with kids or family gatherings! Especially in the summer
Margaret Mason
Disappointing brunch. 10 of us ..hash browns burnt, spoilt x4 of the meals. When politely pointed out, manager unapologetic...in fact tried to justify them which was so inappropriate as clearly not edible. Not a place we will return to.
Family Eats
This is a wee gem to have local to us. <br/>The coffees good, the food is good and they have both indoor and outdoor to pay areas for the kids - fab!<br/>Dedicated kids menu with lots of options. <br/>Service can be a wee bit slow when they are busy and the donut we tried from the cabinet was very dry and bland...in future we'll stick to the menu options!

This is a nice cafe in coatesville north shore. i been there at last Tuesday. mocha was very nice and the food very good too. got my breakfast there feel like a little town. Relax and not far from the city.

Lovely brunch place , I had the field roast mushroom... love the way they make their crispy kumara hash...simple ingredients presented so elegantly ... Highly recommended

What a great cafe. The owner is very friendly with a great memory for names. The food always arrives in a timely manor and is great value for money. Fernilea is a great family venue in a quiet part of Auckland and well worth a visit.

What I like about Fernielea Café is that you get a real country experience. It has a lovely friendly but casual ambience, that makes you feel welcome from the moment you step through the door. Popping in for a coffee, it's hard to resist the sweet treats on offer in the cabinet..so much choice! If you have time for a sit down meal, you simply must try the Seared Salmon & Prawns. Weather permitting, it's lovely enjoyed with a glass of wine in the garden. This is a real gem that is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike...don't go past without trying it out...you won't be disappointed!

Our breakfast at Fernilea last Saturday was perfect, beautiful setting on a lovely spring morning, and a breakfast that was divine. The French toast was delicious and generous, and their potato hash cake was a great side with my poached eggs. The coffee, perfect!!!!!!!!! <br/><br/>Fernilea is our regular cafe of choice in Coatesville, we love the coffee, food and the atmosphere, regardless of if we are calling in for a quiet family dinner or to catch up with a group of friends. <br/><br/>Our children have loved being able to race around and enjoy the playground when we meet for a gathering of other families. It always has, and continues to, tick all the boxes in regards to catering for all. <br/><br/>This is a cafe that caters perfectly for families, and the setting is lovely and park like.<br/><br/>Fernilea, with Rain and her wonderful attentive staff, has been the perfect place for us to hold end of season sports dinners and birthday party's. It is a great place to start the day with a wonderful breakfast, or to grab that quick coffee on the dash.

Hi, <br/>Terrible service at Fernilea today about 2.45pm.<br/><br/>As regulars at Fernilea we were astounded and very disappointed at the level of service we had today!! <br/><br/>We waited 25 minutes we received our carafe of water- still no coffees??<br/><br/>We noticed other people that came way after us got their coffee and food!!<br/>after 30 minutes I went to the counter and spoke to the usual friendly owner.. <br/>We was making them now.. she reassured me!!<br/><br/>no apology... no reason given??  Is this how you treat your regulars??<br/><br/>Also another note<br/>.. screaming children???  please... ??   we are paying customers too and do not appreciate hearing and seeing bad parenting from customers... do we have to?? <br/><br/>You have stiff competition next door in the opposition cafe..   Are you forcing us go there even though it is not our choice?? Is there something you could do?? <br/><br/>Anna / Liz

The eggs bene is the business! Great service, nice set up, peach/strawberry smoothie was very refreshing too. Left very full and happy. Would definitely recommended :)

One of the best cafes on the North Shore. The food is always presented beautifully and there isn't a single thing on the menu that isn't delicious. Myself, family and friends agree that they make the best coffees and the staff are very friendly. It's a really lovely atmosphere with a playground + trampoline for the kids to play on and it's nice and cosy around the fire place! They're open for dinner Friday nights and my partner and I both agree that their home made, wood fire pizzas are the best we've ever had! Would definitely recommend!
Lovely Maralit
Love coming back here despite the long drive. I had steak sandwich and it was cooked to perfection :) friendly staff and cute cat roaming around. Loved the fire place because it was cold today felt really cosy like home. Highly recommend this place :)
Manic Wookie
Took my mum there for a belated mothers day. Normal cafe prices. Nothing over priced. I had the chicken Cajun burger and it was really good. I don't have kids myself but there was a large playground so very family friendly. Staff were nice and gave us blankets for outside.
Anton Landman
Everybody was pretty happy with their meals. It's a rural setting but yet not far away from the city. It's a popular place and quite busy especially with parents and their kids. Waiters where friendly.
Megan Spice
Gorgeous place. Had my sons 3rd birthday here and the staff were amazing and we felt really looked after. The service was top! The food was great-nothing fancy but catered to a great lunch, fast and good quality. Will be coming back. Playground and indoor toys available was impressive and nice to have a fully fenced area for children.

A cosy old-fashioned country gem! Recently changed hands and the new owners are making it even better.. freshening the decor, adding to the menu, new bar area, big improvements to the kiddies play area at back. Meet with family or friends or just drop in on your own. Good coffee and yummy food. So relaxing and welcoming :)
The Food Scribbler
We went here on Sunday (a busy Father's Day).  It was the second time we have been here and the kid friendly playground out the back and the inside toy nook demanded a second visit for our 5 year old.  The food was once again excellent.  Decent sized portions and it was all cooked perfectly.  The staff were very young but excellent, we complimented their service at the end of the meal, they really did do a great job.  The cinnamon walnut brioche is amazing and the coffee 10/10.  We travelled a long way to get there but it is a fantastic Sunday destination and we will definitely be back.  Well done Fernlelea - you are one of our favourite cafes.  THE FOOD SCRIBBLER

Always a warm welcome come rain or shine!!<br/><br/>Regular visitor as I love the coffee here. Always recommend to friends to meet at Fernielea as there is a great kiddie play area and a trampoline that I have been known to use ;)<br/><br/>Great Tapas night on a Friday so we will be back soon!!
Alison
Favourite place to go. Consistently the best coffee on the North Shore. I cannot speak highly enough of the friendly staff and exceptional food. Even though our family are regulars we are always made to feel valued and spoilt. Love it!!!
Tanya Demmer
I am a regular at Fernielea Cafe and have always found the food outstanding. The owner Rain and the staff are very warm and friendly.<br/>And yes it can be quite busy at times but this is a cafe not a restaurant on the high street , food is reasonably priced and has a great playground for kids.<br/>Highly recommended
Monique
I am a regular at Fernielea and will always go back. Rain is a wonderful host who always welcomes you and makes you feel at home. The food is great and my partner can not go past the big breakfast. Food is reasonably priced and a great playground outside for the children. Also gives you a real country feel being able to sit outside on the grass. Love Fernielea and highly recommend.

Huge disappointment! We booked 2 weeks in advance for Mothers day, confirmed a couple of days before and got a reminder text from management requesting us to be on time. When we got there (on time), we were seated at a 30cm wide fold-out ancient sewing table (clearly not part of the usual furniture and definitely not suitable or enough space to enjoy a meal) right in the middle of the busiest walk-through of the restaurant. No attempt was made to accommodate us and we were told large groups get seating preference. We ordered as soon as we sat down, but waited an hour for our food. All customers were only given 90 minutes per table, so when we asked about this when our food arrived late, we were shocked to get some lip and really bad attitude from the restaurant manager/lady with the red top. We have never experienced something like this before and it made for a very unpleasant experience. The poor waiters were friendly and tried from their side, but restaurant management seemed to be quite the opposite! Will not recommend this place, especially on busy days or if you want a nice meal out in a relaxing environment. Not to mention the septic tank smell lingering around...
Craig McCarthy
We live within 1km of this cafe and have been a few times so I thought I would book for Mothers Day brunch well what a mistake that was, I received a long winded txt confirming my booking explaining to be on time which we were, then the fun began. I was told upon booking that we would be seated inside however this wasn't to be, instead we were seated outside within 15 meters of a septic tank vent ummmmmm nothing like the smell of human waste to get the appetite ready for lunch but don't worry about that.... lunch never came after waiting 2hrs for some scrambled eggs we decided to leave.<br/><br/>I understand that Mothers Day is a busy time for the hospitality industry, however, they have had a year to plan for this day. I would rather take my mum to a sidewalk hot dog stand in Compton than return here!!<br/><br/>Keep driving straight past folks.
Vicky
New to the area, we had been here for breakfast a few weeks earlier. All in our group had thoroughly enjoyable meals. On that basis I decided to book for Mother's Day. Arriving on time (I got a text message stressing the importance of being on time) we were promptly shown to our table, so far so good. Didn't last long through as I am still undecided as to what was more offensive, the 90 minute wait for our meals or the overwhelming stench of the septic tank which was a definite ambience killer. With the arrival of one omelette and no sight of the remaining four meals some 15 minute later I took queue from my now stone cold omelette, paid for our drinks and advised our wish to cancel our order. They seemed completely perplexed - Really?? A bit too hit and miss this one........ I think I will pass next time and head straight to the cafe next door which is coincidently where we ended up. Great food, service and coffee. And stench free no less.
Rob Hewitt
Mothers Day, what a disaster, arrived on time as requested by the management via a txt a few days before hand, tale had been just vacated and took a little while to clear and clean, ordered our meals ( some meals were not available due to being sold out, no problem) Of the 5 meals ordered only 3 arrived and one was incomplete then we were informed the other to meals (both the same) had sold out but we could order another, asked what they recommended, only to be told we could order one of the meals that we had be told was not available, clearly the staff didn't know what was going on. After a two hour wait for the last two meals we cancelled and left. The staff were polite and nice, however, would not recommend this place on a busy weekend in fact I would be concerned even on a normal day. No rating as only a negative would cervice.
Ngaire Marwood
Just dropped in for lunch, we were seated at a lovely table with a nice view, our drinks came promptly, and we ordered our food, here is the only disappointing point of our visit, the wait was forever, we asked 2 waitress about our meal, then mine duly arrived then long another wait before my daughters arrived. Now we were happy campers the food was well worth the wait, our meals were the best cafe food I have eaten in a long time, thanks we will be back.

In response to Tony L’s recent review; I am a very regular customer of Fernielea and will visit up to 5 times a week for their fabulous takeaway coffee and cabinet food and bring my family in for brunch most sundays. I was actually in the restaurant, just a few tables away when I noticed a man who was seated with his wife speaking very rudely to the young staff members (all of whom are lovely and have always provided myself and all other customers with the most professional and friendly service possible). This man was complaining about the wait on his food, the cafe was packed with only 1 or 2 tables free. We arrived before this couple and received our meals in under half an hour of ordering them and the complaining male customer received his no more than ten minutes after we did. When a staff member came to the table to check on the meals he told her that there was a skin on his baked beans due to them apparently being sat cooling for too long (i have eaten this meal on more than one occasion and have never been able to fault it). The staff member seemed taken aback by his blatant rudeness and unkind manner but she apologised profusely that his meal was not up to his standard and offered to take it back to the kitchen, he refused and continued to eat. the staff member returned a few minutes later and then explained to Tony that the crusting on the top was due to them being baked in the oven. He then proceeded to embarrass the waitress and raised his voice telling her; “don’t you tell me about cooking!!”. Myself and my partner were shocked at his rudeness and attitude and complimented the waitress on how she dealt with the situation as she remained completely professional, offering him a chance to order something else or to substitute the beans for another option within the meal. Most ridiculous of all, I then watched this man eat the entire meal, with nothing left on his plate!! Myself, my family and a great part of the Coatesville community have spent years enjoying the amazing food, service and atmosphere that Fernielea has to offer and I can in all honesty say that his review is not only harsh, but it is also not truthful. I would recommend Fernielea cafe to anybody and everybody
Tony Ledger
We waited 50 minutes for our meals. When I asked about the delay we were told it was due to a number of large orders that had been placed and the food would arrive shortly, it finally arrived 15 minutes later. When the food finally arrived there was a skin on top of the beans and they were cold. The staff said that the skin was due to the fact that the beans were homemade and baked in the oven. The food was bland and the service was poor. There was no organisation in the kitchen, it appeared there was only one chef, there were piles of dirty dishes stacked up. We won't be returning.

Just returned from what we thought would be a nice relaxing Sunday lunch at Fernielea in a quiet country atmosphere. Wrong ! Sat down, waitress came and took our order and then we had to sit and endure someone hammering just beside the deck our table was at, and if that wasn't enough, they then had to cut the timber they were working with just metres away with a skilsaw. Why they would pick a beautiful Sunday lunchtime to do this is totally beyond me. You would think they would have more consideration for their customers than that. Looking at their opening hours, there would have been plenty of opportunity to do this outside opening hours. Great staff, average food, but like other reviewers, won't be going back. We couldn't wait to get out of there.
Peter Alley
Had Sunday lunch, 4 adults 1 two year old. Friendly, helpful staff, quite busy but no lengthy wait.Excellent food, well priced, First class steak sandwich, BLT and mushroom dish, made a lovely ham &amp; cheese toasty for the young one, definitely be back.

Very disappointing. Nice waiting staff, but hopeless organisation in the kitchen. <br/>We thought we'd try this place as we were in the Coatesville area. It was quite busy on a Sunday lunchtime - but not overly so. Having ordered our meals we waited patiently for half an hour. There didn't seem to be too many meals arriving at the tables around us so we asked when we might expect ours to arrive. We were told 10 minutes. 20 minutes later we asked again and the waiter went off to find out but didn't return. After a few more minutes with our patience exhausted we pulled the plug. <br/>As I told the person in charge, if there was going to be that sort of wait we should have been told up front so we could have made an informed decision instead of hanging around for nearly an hour without result. <br/>Either they have too many tables for their kitchen or their kitchen was seriously understaffed. One of the tables next to us asked for some bread &amp; butter for their children after what must have been a similar wait. The table next to us seemed similarly exasperated. <br/>If you come here I suggest you check the wait when ordering from the menu so you know to opt for something from the cabinet if the wait is going to be excessive. <br/>Shame - the experience spoiled what could have been a pleasant and relaxed Sunday brunch.

My partner and I had brunch at Fernielea on a whim, whilst driving through Coatesville after staying in Kumeu the night before at our friends wedding - needless to say we were feeling a little worse for wear... and what a LOVELY surprise Fernielea was! The service from the counter and the waitresses was efficient and friendly, the price was absolutely fair for what we ordered (approx $10 dearer than our usual brunch out but WELL worth the extra $10!). The food arrived quickly, was piping hot, well presented and absolutely delicious. Fernielea, I was thrilled to see you so busy that fine Sunday morning, and I'm not surprised at all judging by the experience we had with you. I have highly recommended you to many others - so do me proud and keep up your excellent excellent standards. I don't usually RAVE about restaurants and cafes on menumania, but you deserve it - we will be back when the world sends us your way (we are not locals) and I for one cannot wait! Thank you.

Enjoyed a Sunday breakfast there with friends. My request for a combination across two menu items was dealt with warmly and easily. Friends devoured their big breakfasts and were very pleased. An enjoyable experience and perfect for a weekend breakfast treat.

We have just come back from having lunch. The service was appalling, no one smiled, or chatted to us. Just put the plates on the tables and walked away. The adults got served first and 5 children had to wait for theirs. We will not be coming back...

Went once &amp; this cafe was amazing - beautiful setting, great food &amp; wonderful service. Took friends back after raving about it &amp; couldn't have been more disappointed! Service was appalling, took ages for anyone to help us &amp; when they did they got our order wrong. What we were served was very average &amp; they didn't even really apologise or compensate for their error. Very disappointing &amp; we won't be going back ...

My family and I have travelled from the Eastern Suburbs to celebrate birthdays and get togethers at Fernielea for a number of years. We have always enjoyed the excellent food. However on our last visit on Friday 19 August 2011 our enjoyment was marred by an overcharge of $12 for items listed twice. This was only discovered when I asked for a detailed list, which should have been offered before my credit card was charged. The $12 was refunded, but I am still waiting for an apology.

I have never had a home made hash brown that has tasted so good! The coffee is great and so is the service! I started with the Sunriser sandwich, it was so good I stayed with it for a while and now I have moved on through the menu and haven't found anything that I dislike. My waistline is growing because I have also been going through your homemade cake selection and the dolly slice is a particular favorite! My sons love the large portion size of the Ten acre classic and the iced coffees and smoothies go down a treat. Greet team at Fernielea, cheers Martin

As a frequent customer to Fernielea, we have been consistently impressed with their beautiful food, breakfast especially. I appreciate there handmade pesto and salsas which i always order on the side of my poached eggs. There is always a friendly greeting from their lovely staff and as over time the cafe has got busier and busier as more people find out about there fabulous little Coastesville hideaway. We have always been informed if there is a wait but the atmosphere in the garden or in the cafe is always so nice that this has never bothered us. This is defiantly the only place we like to take people for breakfast or just a casual lunch where you are more than welcome to bring your other family members, like your dogs and if your lucky you will get a surprise visit from the neighboring parakeet. A special treat for children where they can play in the playground while you take time out to enjoy your breakfast. Well done Fernielea, looking forward to our breakfast this Sunday as always!

We really enjoy the food at Fernielea, there's a great selection of food to choose from. The coffee goes down a treat as we are big fans of millers coffee. <br/>Service is friendly and efficient and would definately recommend a weekend brunch outside (if it's warm) or tucked up in the corner with the Sunday paper. <br/>Great for kids as there is a super cute playground outside too. <br/>You may have to reserve yourself a table on Sunday (this is the day we usually go) as we missed out the last time due to poor planning on my part.<br/>Great service, atmosphere and importantly delicious food.

Went there this Sunday (29th). I was really impressed. The staff were really friendly and seemed on top of everything, well managed I suppose! The food was great and I was particularly impressed by the choice of teas, and it was leaf tea not just a tea bag! Definitely value for money and a very good ambiance, I will become a regular.

I visited here 3 months ago and experienced a 2 hour wait for food... and wrote a review. We received an apology and vouchers for a free meal.<br/>Today we returned for our free meal and the difference was astounding - we arrived a little early but it was only a few minutes before we were seated. The service was prompt and our food came within 10 minutes of ordering. The food here is extremely good and all 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed Fernielea second time around. We have put the cafe on our list of "we'll come again" venues. It is a really pleasant venue and on a sunny weekend day I highly recommend eating here. We will all be back - thanks Fernielea, you have won us over.

We went there on mothers day. No reservations but they seated us outside right away. Had a beautiful meal on a gorgeous day with our little one having a great time wandering around the fenced yard and playing on the playground. The staff is polite and friendly. I have absolutely no complaints about this place. Great Job.

I took some friends in and booked a table for 10<br/>and it was so nice to be treated politely by their staff<br/>Incredible wood fired pizza, it was the middle of winter but the gas heaters and friendly atmosphere made the experience all the more like a cafe in whistler, I hope this cafe stays secret because I hate having to book weeks ahead to go somewhere

My girlfriends and I meet once a month at this lovely venue. Service with a smile, nothing is too much trouble and the food is delicious. Even though it is out of my way by quite a distance, I don't mind the trip when I know a welcome awaits. :-)

This is a wonderful country cafe that we locals frequent for the great food and ambiance. Sometimes we walk to the cafe with our dog and other times we ride our horses over for a coffee or a glass of wine. The staff are all friendly and efficient, and you are always made to feel welcome. The dinners are also excellent, and it's often a surprise to our out-of-town visitors that they can get such quality food and service in a rural area like ours. We are blessed to have such a cafe in our community.

Fantastic Cafe. Great atmosphere, great staff and service and great food. Excellent to take your kids with the playground and chilled out feel. We have regular Mum's and babies catch ups and everyone i have taken has been back and recommended to others!

This is one of the best cafes in Auckland. Food is superb, and the play area and toys are excellent for keeping the kiddies entertained whilst the grown ups enjoy a relaxing brekkie. The pot of tea is a triumph in tasty beverage.

no atmosphere, cold, food basic, pie on plate with small pot of pickle, not the sort of place I would take friends too

Our table of 11 people were there for my partners birthday - Brunch. We were seated on the deck. Beautiful day! My meal was 'eggs bene with Salmon' accompanied by a flat white and I took home a ginger slice that was delicio!!<br/><br/>The service was great apart from the end when I think our table should have been cleared before I asked but it was relatively busy, that I can understand as I've worked in hospitality.<br/><br/>Great place and will visit again and recommend to others<br/><br/>Well done!!

Honestly the best meal I've had for a while. I had the seared Salmon which was cooked to perfection, even the baby spuds were a treat in themselves, not a fault to be found with anything. The staff were friendly, the coffee was excellent. The prices were extremely resonable, infact less than inferior city cafe's for such generous portions and quality. It was so good we went back again and it was consistently great.
