Review Five Stags - Cromwell

Went there on a Friday evening for dinner and it was packed. Lovely appealing exterior stone and wooden building - made to look like a barn or lodge. Seemed to be the busiest place in Cromwell that night with all the locals. Great vibe. Felt like a real small town, farming, southerners pub. Loved all the hunting type, rustic wooden interior design. Couldn't get a table initially so sat on lovely Chesterfield leather couches until a table became free. Bit disappointed that there was no table service when ordering our food. We had to go up to the bar to order. Staff seemed friendly. Had the fried chicken with siracha mayo as a starter which was incredible. So crispy and tasty! Then had the Angus rib-eye steak with winter veg and garlic butter - very good and decent sized portions too. I'd definitely go back there. The other meals on the menu looked great too.

Pros: The burgers were great - large portions and very tasty, with a generous side order of perfect fries and aioli. The prices were very reasonable. Water served at the table was filtered. Cons: Don't go if you hate seeing taxidermied animal heads.

Great place, we came here for lunch on our way to Twizel. It was very nice, we had shrimp linguine and crispy chicken burger. Nice setting outside and inside. There are two restaurants actually, one licensed with a bar and another one next to it without the bar but great for kids. Menu is the same, I think the one also had bar snacks and the pizzas!

Couldn't fault the service and menu selection. We visited for a Sunday lunch and although it was quite busy, the staff were attentive and friendly. The wine and beer was cold and the pulled pork pizza and fries were spot on. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work.

First time I've been ask to hold my card because I ask for a extra Stella Artois after my first and a Pizza that I pay for b4 I was served. Because I didn't ask 4 a tab for extra 3 beers?

I'm so sorry I mixed up the places I had been. This place was a big surprise. Enjoyed it for the view. I did not have food but others in the group had bar snack and drinks.

A friend and I went and just got 3 share plates and there was so much food! Really yummy too. Service was lovely, will definitely go back.

Busy place. I was early for dinner but received a friendly welcome and was seated. Good range of food available. Steak was excellent.

Called in for a meal after the wanaka show and the place was packed. Had a fantastic atmosphere. Didn't have to wait long for food to arrive. My only gripe was as soon as you finished your last mouthful the wait staff took your plate away. 4 people at the table and we all had plates taken away one by one. I know they were busy and this was to quickly turn over the table as a large bus load of rugby players arrived towards the end of meals. But it made us feel rushed and while 3 of us would of ordered desserts we left promptly. Food and price was very good and would probably try five stags again on a less busier night.

Great pizza and service. Really friendly young guy on the bar, good to meet someone happy with their work interacting with customers
