Review The Patriot - Devonport

Michelle Osbaldiston
We visited here tonight and ate a hearty dinner. They have a kids menu which is always a winner! Traditional pub food at reasonable prices. Hamburgers, bangers and mash, nachos etc. The cocktails were good at about $16 each. Upstairs is a pool table and dart board for those wanting to settle in for a couple of hours. Great location in Devonport.

Great atmosphere, beer & food. The steak & Guiness pie is highly rated & delicious. Friendly staff, plenty of seating. Recommended for Aucklanders & visitors 😎😁❤️‍🔥

The mussels in white wine were superb and the best of the numerous places around the north island where we ate mussels during our quest to eat green-lipped mussels every day we could find them.

Classic corner pub but not on a corner. Absolutely delicious food, cheers to chef & well worth the wait. Sat outside & enjoyed the sunshine & the people watching. I would of given you 5 stars but you really do need to give your toilets a well deserved makeover or at least a good scrub & paint & new toilet brushes & fix the door latches.

Good food, lovely spot in the evening sun and friendly service. Two for the price of one meals on Wednesday nights are to be recommended.

The Patriot is an awesome pub that provides more than just good drinks and food. The experience is genuinely personalized, making it feel like more of a community gathering place. Fantastic customer service is something worth mentioning, as the staff at The Patriot is among the best in Devonport. Their commitment to excellent service is evident from the moment a customer walks through the door. Very polite, constantly clearing glassware. Went here for a drink after work last Friday. The owner's involvement and interest in the customer's opinion regarding the new loyalty initiative speaks volumes about his dedication and commitment to customers' satisfaction. He makes sure that every customer feels welcomed, making their experience even more enjoyable. In terms of space, the pub has plenty of it, both indoors and outdoors. It's perfect for any occasion, whether it's a small group or a large gathering, making it a great place to organize events. The prices on drinks are reasonable, ensuring that customers can enjoy a good time without breaking the bank. The Patriot pub offers a range of options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, making it accessible to everyone. Overall, my verdict is that The Patriot in Devonport is a must-visit pub. The fantastic customer service, reasonable prices, great owner involvement, and ample space make it an excellent pub to socialize with friends over food and drinks. Highly recommended and will definitely be back.

Wednesday evening! Amazing Pork Belly! Great service from the Duty Manager. She does an amazing job. Unfortunately she has to make double the effort, because Mrs Peace is….just that….peacefully floating around. Serves me my food without cutlery. I signal to her (standing on the other side of the room) cutlery please, she nods, but never return with cutlery.

Local pub in what was originally a Bank of New Zealand building. Selection of on tap and bottle beers plus wine. Pub style bar meals at reasonable cost, we went twice during our stay in Devonport, cheery and friendly staff.

My partner and I had a dinner at here on last Wednesday, so lovely place.and the waiter with curly hair is so cute, and he really given us good service and patience. I speak English not well but I feel here like my home. Steak& Guinness pie was great, and fried fish and chip with salad was wonderful. I will come back again and again. Enjoy here every moment with my partner, definitely 5 stars

Nice spot to sit outside and enjoy a cold drink, service was really friendly and efficient. They even packed up one of our orders as we were too full from the earlier food. Well worth a stop for a good feed and a nice drink. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

I was immediately in love with the Patriot as a simple beer drinking haunt the moment I walked around and found they had like 4 or more seating areas, particularly the couch inside and the spacious back patio. There was also the upstairs indoor patio with a TV and pool table. We were looking for a place we could chat about work projects and because this place had so much room, it was perfect for us to be able to find space where it wasn't too noisy - we had room all to ourselves. Definitely coming back again any time I want a simple drink and a place to sit back and talk.

We had steaks and burgers and it was great. Great selection of beers and diverse sitting options: on-street, indoors, balcony, and roofed garden.

Really nice place and real close to ferry station as well.

Apologies photos were taken half way through the meal, but fantastic food - two of the kids ate free. One had bangers and mash (very generous portion) and the other nuggets and chips. The eldest had calamari, which was great and two adult meals of bangers and mash and lamb salad. Fantastic food, fabulous staff, great beers on tap - very happy and would absolutely come here again!!!

Was quite nice lunch and tasted nice. Had snapper risotto and chargrilled lamb salad. Friendly staff that kept checking how everything was :)

Came in for lunch today. Environment was what made me want to go in and eat. It was warm and cozy inside. We ordered a chicken and mushroom pie with fat chips as the side and a snapper risotto. The pie crust was nice and crispy and the gravy was delicious. The mushrooms were tender. However the chicken breast was dry. The fat chips turned out to be wedges and the whole portion size was huge. The snapper risotto was creamy and the snapper tasted herby.

Great location along the main road at Devonport. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was reasonable and good portions. We love the lamb rack and the wedges we ordered. But not really keen on the Pork bites....as they were literally fat portions concealed in crunchy coating. Ambiance was not too bad......I wouldn't mind coming back to try their other meals.
Love Food
Standard pub food, nothing fancy. The portion sizes are reasonable which is good if you need to soak up your beer. Good pub atmosphere and the staff are friendly. Lots of seating options inside and out.

We came mid week and tried the two for one special. Pretty standard pub fare , Fish (Snapper) and Chips as well as the Guinness pie . A nice warm fireplace . Reasonably priced and good size meal portions.

Unfortunatly the worst food we have had in Auckland since moving here in April - overpriced and not enjoyable.

That being said it is a great location for a drink on a sunny day and the staff were really nice though :)

My girlfriend and I went there during the Queens Birthday for lunch. The place is nice and very warm. Waitress were polite and service was good. However the food was below average for the price they charged. I had the scallops and King prawns - oily, portions are small and Beef Eye Fillet - I asked for medium rare and the fillet was overcooked. Very disappointing.

Purchased a voucher for Devonport tour to include 60 dollars food. Only to be told couldn't pick off the menu had to have salad, burger or pie. Then told two of the pies were out, ordered lamb pie twice only then to be told only one left. Basically my friend had something he didn't want. I gave him half of mine. The poor waitress kept having to come and communicate the list of "issues" after speaking to the faceless manager. Incompetent and poor management. Avoid. Food was very average as well my peas were cold and I had to ask for the gravy I ordered and I was so fed up I left the fact my chips became mash potato go. Shambles.

Proper hearty pub food and actually feels like a UK pub, too. Great afternoons or evernings!

Quiz nights are always a laugh, especially with the beers flowing!

Went for a 21st so had booked the upstairs and paid for catering the food was horrible and inedible we couldn't change what was on the TV screens because someone downstairs wanted to watch a certain program the drinks were so over priced the upstairs nar andnthe bar downstairs were priced differently the bar staff were nice and friendly but definitely not

Over priced and under seasoned!

Today we went to the Patriot for a late lunch. Three of us dined, and although service was fast, the food was not great. We ordered two eggs benedict with Salmon, and a salt and pepper squid salad, along with one Isaacs pear cider, one vodka soda and lemon and one water. Totalling $72.50. The salmon was clearly cooked from frozen and still cold in the middle, and neither the salmon nor the s&p salad had been seasoned. Clearly missing the flavour bin on the way out the door. The portion sizes, especially for the eggs benedict muffins was a joke. As we hadn't eaten all day we were starving so decided to tuck in and pass on constructive criticism to the waitress at the end, hopefully this got passed on. Over all a very mediocre feed, even for a pub.

I like the 'beer garden' area at the back. It's perfect for summer time and have a good time with friends. We had steak salad which was pretty good. The steak cooked nicely and salad was served in pretty generous size. Also had daily special steak pie. It was pretty big. It was served with peas and fat chips. I really like the chips because they were so thick and crunchy. The pie was good but little bit too salty that day. Service was pretty good as well. Recommend for people who like pub food to give it a try!

Came here a couple of weeks ago for a pub quiz with some workmates and had such a great time! The pints are actual pints (haha) and the food is pretty typical but delicious pub fare. We really enjoyed the atmosphere they had created and it was an awesome mixture of different people in the bar, some from as far as Brazil.
The pub quiz was really well organised and super fun, and we even won a free round of shots for getting the mystery question right on the first try! Will definitely be back again.

Had my 21st Birthday party here. The staff went above and beyond and really made the night go smoothly. Food was taken around the room to all the guests rather than being left on the table which I appreciated. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed friendly environment without being too pricey.

Went here for quiz night, was really fun. Had a salad that was really nice, price was a bit steep for what it was. But would definitely go back. great atmosphere, lovely staff.

Went here with the wife and another couple to play quiz last Tuesday evening. Was really surprised at how busy it was but as luck would have it a table was leaving just as we walked in so we pounced on that. I lived in London for a couple of years in my early 20's and this pub is the closest thing I'm come across in NZ to a real English pub. The decor was well done with beautiful maps and quirky quotes around the walls. The fire was roaring in the middle of the bar and everybody was drinking PINTS of beer rather than the scooners we are all used to. We decided to order dinner and I'm glad we did. Fish & chips for me, Patriot burger for the wife and a couple of steaks( med-rare) for Dave and Debs. I can honestly say the fish and chips was excellent, not greasy in the slightest, fresh and tasty with crispy batter and home cut fat chips! Not the frozen chips you get most places. Wifey raved about her burger although she couldn't finish it all, clearly a homemade pattie and plenty of lettuce, tomatoes pickles etc bursting out of it. Dave and Debs said their steaks were very nice, cooked to perfection. They were presented beautifully on the plate from what I could see. Girls had dessert, Dave and I had another Guinness.
A slick operation is how I'd describe The Patriot, great location, great service, great food, great beer, the only thing that wasn't great was our performance in the quiz....11th!

Standard pub. Food is better than expected, but way overpriced for the quantity and for what you expect from a pub. Even the drinks are slightly more expensive than average. Meh

Went in for lunch here with no planning; I was surprised that the food's actually quite tasty! There's nothing much in decor, it's pretty much a dark and a bit tired looking pub with friendly staff. They have selections of beer on tap--Guiness is one of them, which is a win in my book.

My partner ordered eggs and bacon on toast ($15.50) and the staff happily obliged his request of replacing the grilled tomato with mushrooms--according to him it's tasty enough. I ordered the sandwich of the day ($19.50) which was cajun spiced grilled chicken with guacamole and hand cut agria chips; this was really good. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the cajun spice really enhanced its flavor, with tasty house made fresh guacamole on top.

I would want to come back and try their other dishes--probably at night to see how the ambience is once it's changed into a night pub!

The Vegetable Terrine was fantastic!
Love the fact that it is healthy yet full in taste. Didn't realise pumpkin ad cream cheese can go best together. Love the fact that the food came out fast and presentation was superb.
Ambience. Service. Food. Five star no less!

Avoid this place! After a long hike up to North Head, we stopped here en route back to the ferry wharf to have a cold drink and dinner. We went inside, passed the bar, into the garden and then up the stairs to a covered balcony overlooking the garden. En route the barman and several waiters greeted us but after we had been seated almost 15 minutes, no one appeared to take our order. A couple sitting at the next table said we would have to go downstairs to the bar to order, pay and take a number. We did precisely this but 10 minutes passed and still no drinks; then a waiter appeared with menus and wanted to take our drink order. When he saw we had a number, he disappeared. 10 more minutes passed until the drinks arrived. Since it had taken so long to get drinks, we decided to order our dinner when the drinks were served. A good half hour after the dinner order had been taken, the same waiter who had served our drinks and taken the food order re-appeared and advised us that it was not possible for us to have dinner since the kitchen was closing early -- mind you, this was at 6:00 p.m.!!! No apology, no nothing! Guess what??? No more going to this place and no recommending it to anyone else!

It can only say one thing - slack service and long waits for meals. This has also been noted by other people (on other sites too).

The staff are friendly enough, but the waitress promised to come and get our order, but didn't turn up, so we went to the bar to try and order but were told to go back to our table and someone would help us. Another waiter then duly turned up and took our order. After waiting for over half an hour we were wondering where our salads had got to, only to be told very apologetically by another of the staff that there had been a mix up with our order, so we were served our "side" of chips to keep us going until our order came out. This arrived a few minutes later.

We then waited another 15 minutes but no salad appeared. After being there in total for an hour and having eaten the chips because we were very hungry by then, we no longer felt like the salad, and it was getting late and we were unable to stay any longer.

To be fair, they gave us our 2 drinks and chips for free by way of an apology - and the guy behind the bar was indeed very apologetic. But it would seem that there is a lack of attention with some members of the wait staff (or was it the kitchen that got our order mixed up?). One in particular just seemed to be not "on the ball" with the service.

I could understand mistakes happening if it was busy, but most of the tables inside were empty.

Shame we couldn't have stayed any longer (we have normally eaten and gone within in an hour at most places).

Thanks to the staff member for the apologies at least. That went a long way.

Nice selection of Beers though. But we won't be going back. Shame really, with better service it might have been good.

We have been here a few times now and always thoroughly enjoy the meals and beer. The food is always great and the service was just as good each time we have been, and there is a really good atmosphere. the last time we visited the patriot we took a few friends along with us and they all loved the place as well. If we lived closer we would be there all the time. Hopefully be back soon.

Friend and I went to The Patriot for a catch up my friend decided he would buy me dinner,to our suprise the dinner menu was ridiculously over price for a bar menu ,the pricing i would expect at a top restaurant anyhow we settled with wedges ,took long enough when they arrived i was shocked they look like they had been microwave hot we both dug in,i nearly puked the wedges were hard tasteless like cardboard .I felt like going back and telling the waiter but my friend told me not to bother,he felt the same about the wedges too.Since he brought them i ate them quickly drinking my beer, did't wanna waste his money. I won't be going back again for a feed, for a drink or 2 yeah but for a bite no,i will go elsewhere.

I have previously eaten here and enjoyed the food but the last two experiences mean I will not be back in a hurry! I can only assume the manager does not work Saturdays! Firstly, the chips are usually really good but last time they were cold. Secondly, listening to the waiter flirt with the waitress right behind my shoulder was distracting. I heard a woman walking past say to her friend 'they're still at it', so it had obviously put off other patrons.
Thirdly, we waited a long time for service while the staff stood on the steps talking- and after 10 minutes, we got our own menus.
The previous occaision I tried to dine there, they stopped serving food on a Saturday two hours early.
Their food is great pub food, and the service can be great, but lately they just seem to be getting worse.

Decided to stop in here over the Christmas break for a quick meal before going to a movie and found the service friendly and efficient and food great.

Not expecting much from a pub for a meal especially over this period we were quite taken by surprise.
My wife had the fish and chips and I had the pie.
The fish was fresh and tasty, the batter crispy and not at all oily and the chips were the best we have had for a long time, fat, salty and tasty. While not the healthiest meal was most enjoyable.
My pie was very tasty and of course I had the chips as well.

I would recommend The Patriot as a good place to stop off for a pint and a feed, even if it's for just a bowl of chips, when you're in Devoport.

An old school pub that is larger than life! That's what you get at the patriot. Really great location in Devonport in an old Victorian bank! This place is awesome if there is a game on and a toasty little bar during winter. Their food is much of a muchness as it's a pub so expect decent pub food. Their pricing is about standard for the area. What I love about this place is it's massive garden bar out the back which is amazing during summer. This is my usual haunt after the Devonport Food and Wine Festival. It caters well for everyone.
