Review Devonport Stone Oven Bakery & Cafe - Devonport

Wonderful spot for lunch. Great sandwiches, drinks, and sweets.

Started coming here about two weeks ago and has quickly become our local, not only is it not pretentious (especially compared to similar cafe/eateries), the food is really good, the staff are friendly and additionally it is great value for money. The space is also really large so even when it gets busy it doesn't feel crowded. Would highly recommend.

The name catchy, the space is great, the menu has lots of variety, the food is good and there's coffee! There's not much else you can ask for. The child's play area was the overall winner for us, with a fantastic space with lots of fun toys. Over our short trip to Devonport we came here twice, we had items off the menu and out of the cabinet and they all tasted great. My husband said the pies were incredible! I like the assortment of indoor plants and art work.. it could be tied togethet with slightly more unique furniture, or maybe just a bit of a spruce up.. but all in all its a fantastic place with seating options to suit every kind of customer. Staff are also really friendly... And free slice with coffee too!

I must highly recommend this coffee shop. Coffee is really delicious it is one of the best coffee I have ever had, also the food tastes good.

The fried chicken inside the chicken waffle is so juicy and full of flavour best chicken I have had in a while. Coffee is also good

Fantastic service. Fantastic coffee. Great selection of cabinet food. Didn't get to try anything off the menu so will look forward to visiting again in the future.

I have got a voucher, food are exceeding my expectation. Big breakfast is good portion. Hash brown is super crispy. The only thing needs improve is the presentation of plate, just a little old school. Only a small change will make it perfect

We had creamy mushrooms with a poached egg on top, never had it like that before with the egg it was yummy 😋
Christina “Chris”
Very quiet today, lovely airconditioned surroundings. Had a delicious roast vege salad despite it being around 3pm ish. Great playpen area for people with young children. Friendly and efficient staff 👍✹
Lets Go
Quick efficient service. Spacious seating. Have had better sourdough though. Eggs were just right.

Walked past this cafe and was happy to see a kids area, it's a lovely cafe with very friendly staff. Great place for a tea and slice

Been coming here for over 6 years - every-time I visit from the UK, and it never fails to disappoint!

A nice friendly cafe with excellent customer service.

Service was good, so was coffee. We ordered a bowl of fries, and when they got delivered to the table, they had parmesan cheese sprinkled over them, which we didn't ask for. I'm allergic to cheese so couldn't share. If extra is going to be added to food, the staff should say so or ask.

The place has the vibe of a fancy Mr Bun. Quaint decorations, and a toy area at the back for young kids. We came here with my dad and primary aged kids. The food was great-better than we expected! I had the brunch roll and the egg was nice and runny and the whole bun was very yum. We got hot chips and they were great and flavoursome too. All the other food we got was yum too. The flat white was great (drunk by a fussy Wellingtonian). I only took one star off as the bathroom was a bit dirty. Otherwise we were pleasently surprised and would definitely come again.

Great place to have a brunch

Friendly staff, albeit a little slow. Recent decor update is appreciated, and the kids corner is great. Food has mostly been good, however I usually only have coffee and pastry. Prices are a little above average.

Came on the 1st of January, was busy. I had the beef lasagne which was delicious. A generous bowl of fries, and husband had French toast brioche. Was good! Great selection of cabinet food and a nice play area for children which is alway handy.

My only criticism would be that it would be great if the cafe stopped using plastic straws and cups for their smoothies. Especially for those dining it. Please consider the environment

I ordered a lemon meringue pie, it was awful... I don’t think I have had a bad lemon meringue pie before... the iced mochas were not very cold.. the milkshakes were watery. The waitress was grumpy and frowned the whole time even through we didn’t say anything other than thank you to her. She was acting like she definitely didn’t want to be there. We went there about 5 years ago (we don’t live in the area) it was lovely I believe it is under new management now given how it was so different this time.. wouldn’t bother again.

Visited on a Sunday morning, there were half dozen customers there at the time. Service was friendly although they probably forgot our food order, not sure if it was the front or the kitchen, after 25 mins I asked a staff member and was told it will be right out. Food came out after few more minutes, salmon eggs benny with sides, creamy mushroom. Eggs benny had one lukewarm English muffin probably from Countdown sliced in half, some ice cold shredded smoked salmon just out of fridge, with Knorr hollandaise sauce out of the packet straight onto top of the food, creamy mushroom is a mess, this is the kindest words I can give... all that for $55. Didn't try anything else there, but if anyone want to order food from their kitchen, stay away from eggs benny and creamy muchroom!!
Service 4/5 other than the long wait but dont know who was to blame, Price 2/5, Food 1/5

Our visit to Stone Oven was unintentional, hoping that it wouldn't be a bad one. There weren't a lot of customers on a Monday afternoon. We had a seafood chowder with garlic bread, a roast pepper soup, an open steak sandwich & an Angus beef burger. The pepper soup was terrible salty & had to be sent back. The meat of the sandwich was absolutely unseasoned. Luckily, the lemon slice was good. An average rating was perfectly justifiable.
(Food - 2.5/5; Service - 3/5; Ambience - 3/5)Visited on 11 March 2019

Nice menu. Good selection but generally overpriced in my opinion. 2 eggs and toast expensive and soup of the day was overpriced especially as the bowl was so small. Garlic bread which came with it was an afterthought...forgot to bring it out. Mango magic was however very tasty!
Platypus
Ordered lasagne and a salad. Even though from cabinet, it took 20mins to heat up. Salad was wilted and unfresh with no dressing. Lasagne had a hair in it. The attendant at the time refused to believe me and she said there was no manager to help me. Won’t be coming here again and I don’t recommend this place at all.
Nick Rees
One of our kid meals came out 10 mins late, and we noted that 2 other tables had missed orders. Food was ok but overpriced. Disappointing, as we used to love this place in the past.
Geena15239
Really fast service, probably the fastest I’ve had at a cafe in Devonport. Lovely smoothies and fries, plus the staff are really friendly and helpful! Definitely coming back
Monalisa
It is the first time I go there, was wanting to try something new. Cafe food is average. Service is ok yet they overcharged me with something I didn't order without telling me before I leave the place.

Less than 1/2 a star. The worst cafe I have ever been to. I ordered my usual Mocha and it tasted like they use sachet from supermarket, food was microwaved. And service was less than one star as on a Sunday brunch they only had 2 staff for over 15 tables cafe. Ordered pancakes and for some reason order dnt get to the kitchen so get a refund cause the rest of the food was terrible not a good place ay all
Bun
I used be the one of favorite cafe, but it’s disappointed now.Very poor pancake and coffee is not tasty..
I wish will be back the previous stone oven.
Shinal Shivanghni
Fast service compared with other ones, nice smiling faces across the counter.. the best egg Benedict’s we have tried so far... everything was amazing..
Finn Mckeogh
Definetly an all time classic, though the past few times i have been the coffee has taken much longer than usual and seems they dont have enough staff.
Catherine Scrimgeour
Unfortunately we didn't have a great experience here. We ordered 2 rolls, a muffin, scone, brownie and pie from the premade food and a milkshake. The milkshake came out first (no major) but had no flavor. The rolls came out after 10mins, only for us to find out the signs in the display were mixed up. It took this happening to another group of customers the staff to fix them. The muffin and scone were super dry and the brownie was not good either.
Pauline Norris
The food was ok, but I was put off by the plastic scratched drinking containers for drinking water.
Surely a place like this can afford to buy proper drinking glasses.
Also the birds were pecking at the food left outside on dishes, revoltong.

Have been here a few times now. Absolutely amazing! Food is delicious, service is good and favourite part is the kids area. Nothing better than coffee and food in peace :) lovely little spot.
Heidi Blennerhassett
Arrived about 1pm, cafe cabinet was almost empty & what was in there did not look appertising in any way. Opted for pies & a sausage roll to take away which were luke warm & would have to be some of the worst pies & S/roll we have ever had the misfortune to try, so bad infact all of them were tossed to the birds & even they complained. We won't return :(

Good atmosphere and service. Food was delicious and the portions were huge (not a bad thing I suppose). Almost worth venturing to Devonport for!

Bustling cafe with lovely ambience! Had brunch here on a rainy weekday. Service wasn't the most attentive when we walked in so we seated ourselves and ordered at the counter. I got the Big Breakfast with hash browns, portobello mushrooms, sautéed spinach, bacon, sausages, toms and scrambled eggs. The toast that came with it was a little dry, could've done with some butter but otherwise a delicious and hearty meal!
Sam
We often eat here for breakfast and the food never lets us down. It is always delicious and the portions are generous. The cafe itself is well maintained and has a warm feel, however it is popular with families who have young children so it isn't always the quietest place. Most of the staff are also very friendly. We will happily continue eating here for breakfast.

I had lunch with 3 out of town friends here just after 1pm. The place was relatively busy. the food cabinets were pretty empty so we ordered 2 meals from the menu with request for to remove an item from one and 3 drinks with request not to add an ingrediant on 2 of them. All 3 drinks were served without the missing ingrediant, no problem as they added some on top. The 1st meal arrived but not the second. After a period of time I went to ask where it was and they called out to the Kitchen. By this time place was not busy, the 2nd meal arrived as 1st one was nearly finished. No apology for lateness until I asked why, plus it contained the item not requested . No problem just removed it. Overall both meals were nice. Waiting staff seemed hot and bothered. As a holder of 3 London City and Guilds Catering Qualifications and a past Tutor of City and Guilds, my overall impression was average. I don't think I will be back.

We enjoyed a great lunch here. We ordef seafood chowder, prawn and squid and lamb. Seafood chowder is amazing! The other two dishes are wonderful too. Friendly staff and great environment! Will come back again for sure!

Been here a couple of times for brunch, lunch and coffee. The display cabinet is always full of delicious-looking sandwiches, pies and treats. Unfortunately, not many GF/DF options but hey, not everyone can cater for us difficult foodies!
Coffee is average but drinkable. And the portions are definitely worth the money. This place always looks busy but it's more family orientated, so if you like peace and quiet, it's not the place to come.

Beautiful cafe with friendly staff!
I've been here a few times and I am never disappointed. The food and aesthetics of this cafe is great. Great family environment and it is suitable for people of all ages including kids! 😊

I've always loved burgers. And my trip to the city won't be complete without trying some NZ burgers. And here we were. Settled in for some lunch.

Stone Oven Beef Burger - a lovely dish that gave me full of surprises. The beef patty was succulent and juicy. Loved every bite of it. The bacon and melted cheese added a burst of flavors. Couldn't ask for more from a burger.

The Steak Pie was also delicious. It was flaky at the same time had this tasty beef-filling. Yummy!

Restaurant was tidy and well-maintained. Service was commendable too. Friendly staff.

Can't wait to go back!

I had the salmon bagel and it was very sloppy, the salmon was fresh not smoked and there was no feta(which it said it would have)
Coffee wasn't great either
Overall it wasn't a great experience:(

What an ordeal. We came here for brunch around 11.30am on a Sunday, the place wasn't overly busy with dine in guests, there was a small queue at the counter though for people ordering cabinet food to go. I don't even know where to start with the issues we faced dining here. As we sat down we asked for 4x menus and the staff member went off to collect. Time passed and still no menu... I ended up having to go in and ask for some myself (not a problem but don't agree to get them if you're going to ignore the request). We ordered the corn fritters with no bacon, a salmon eggs bene with mushroom on the side, the beef casserole, the breakfast bruschetta and the French toast with bacon on the side (the no bacon orders are due to our friends being vegetarian). Drink orders were 2x tropical smoothies and a mango smoothie. One staff member came out to serve cutlery, giving the whole stack to me to distribute sans napkins (assuming we would get these later). The corn fritters arrived around 15 mins before everything else which we found a tad odd as we would have liked to have dined together (the reason you go out to eat with friends), then the rest of the food rolled out later. The French roast had bacon through it, the bruschetta was fine and the salmon eggs bene was served after - the eggs were boiled and the dish was cold. The beef casserole was forgotten (then served cold), our smoothies were warm and the staff were flustered as we tried to explain our disappointment and ask for the eggs bene to be re-done. This place has so much potential with a gorgeous menu and dainty layout, but the staff really just need to be guided and trained correctly. It wasn't that busy but things were a mess, people running around forgetting things and a general sense of no real management happening. Highlight of my experience was the chilled filter water - delicious!

Atmosphere very nice as it is off the main street, indoor and outdoor area where you can sit. Inside has a play area for children which is great.
Service, quick and efficient. Orders were correct and nothing was wrong.
Chips were quite salty but the burger was absolutely beautiful and so filling.
Pasta was delicious, just the right amount of cream and bacon and chicken absolutely beautiful.
Would have given a 5 but chips let them down as too salty and could barely eat them :/
Quokkoala
Nice place for a coffee or a bite to eat. Off the main road so is a bit quieter though still gets plenty busy. Staff are friendly but don't hover around the whole time. Food is good

Absolutely appalling service. There didn't seem to be any system in place. I took some visitors there on 2nd Jan and they forgot/lost our order. Had to chase them up after 20 minutes. Some people who waited longer asked for their money back.

@@nice home made food always good many gorgeous foods to choose, lots different slices and cakes pices and also bakery.so enjoy here . Nice lovely service and great entertainment too

Poor quality staff. Ordered/ paid for medium coffee, but got a small-sized looking coffee instead. Upon asking whether this is a medium coffee, the staff acknowledged that it was a small size and suggested that they will bring a medium cup so I can pour the content into it. What a joke. They said they will remake it, but they just made it look like new. Same coffee but in different cup. If I could, I would give this place a negative rating. It took about 20mins to get the coffees too :)

Was hoping this would be good. The food is not bad with the pies great value but....the service from one young guy at the counter was atrocious and totally put us off our food. Not only did he take our order and make us wait 20 min, but when we complained, he wrote down the order again only to forget again. It was only after speaking to a young lady waitress, that we got our food (after 30 min waiting)....the young lady was nice and sorted out the problem in 2 min together with a complimentary coffee. Your store needs to choose its employees more carefully!!!! My experience would have been so much better if it wasn't for the totally incompetent waiter.
Marley
Although the service was very disorganised over the lunch period, there were many great counter options. The dishes were generously portioned with tasty ingredients. The smoothies were average as there was not much besides ice cream, and the coffee was good but not great.

One of my favourite Devonport cafes and usually my go to choice if I am allowed to pick. Plenty of cabinet food to choose from, lots of seating, great kids area and one of the few cafes in Auckland that always has lemon meringue pie on offer :-) - the highlight of any unqualified amateur's cafe dining experience! There is a general feeling of chaos, the staff get frustrated easily and it's hard to know what's going on, but this all adds to the charm and strangely makes one feel more relaxed (especially if kids in tow... :-)
Kat Lin
been there once, and its quite crowded. the atmosphere is great, cozy and relaxing. service is great, girls there are nice. just try one flat white. after all, its not bad.

Devonport Stone oven is high on the value and yummy meter. calamari and prawn salad and steak sandwich both were generously sized and packed with favors. If presentation (or lack thereof) and self service not important, this place is worth checking it out.

Went for lunch at the Stone Oven with friends and I must say I'm glad we did. We were there at what seemed to be peak hours so the cafe was quite busy. However the food was worth the small wait. I had the Thai Beef Salad which was excellent! As well as the Iced Mocha which was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. And the staff were so friendly when they served me and even when they delivered my food! Overall a great place and would definitely be back for more! Highly recommended.

I decided upon using the Grey Scale to review this establishment as I think it was the most suitable way to do it.

Greeted? Yes
Readiness? Yes
Enthusiasm? Yes
Yummy? Yes

Service? Excellent
Comfortable? Yes
Atmosphere? Perfect
Lively? Yes
Expensive? No

They got everything right infact I even ordered a second toasted breakfast sandwich!
Dana
Nice place for a bite to eat, we ordered the lemon curd little cake, mince tarts and pies which were apparently scrummy. Coffee not too bad, probably would try a cold bev instead next time
Paul Horsford
Won't see me again, not because of the food, but the poor service. Ordered 4 cappuccinos, received one and 15 minutes later had to ask about the other three which we received another 15 minutes later. Then we received one of the four meals, and about 20 minutes two more and the fourth one after about another 10 minutes. When we questioned about the order, we got bad attitude from the person.
Iana Gritcan
Had a nice late lunch with great size sandwiches and coffee, staff was friendly and atmosphere just right for having relaxed chat and enjoying time with my significant one

Their Big Breakfast is quite something. "Enormous", doesn't do it justice. I found a rump steak beneath the scrambled eggs! Everything is fresh and served hot. Only gripe, their knives can't cut a sausage.
Irish Eyes
For many years this was my cafe of choice when visiting Devonport. It had a wide variety of freshly prepared cabinet food, superb bakery items and good coffee. On a recent visit it was disappointing to find the cabinet nearly empty at lunchtime with birds flying inside. Tables needed wiping and the cafe did not feel as clean as it used to. Still enjoyed the jam and cream donut though! Coffee was a bit average. A local shopkeeper told me that it had recently changed hands, which I can't confirm. However, let's hope that these issues can be addressed. Devonport needs a good bakery/cafe in order for visitors like us to supplement the picnic basket with yummy treats!

Waited 90 min for a simple breakfast. As per previous reviews, counted orders sucks and I doubt if it saved any costs at all. The staff are forever looking where the order needs to be delivered. Very impersonal. Coffee good at least.
Nikki Hobbs
Bakery goods were superb. Got a delicious loaf of bread, some slices, muffins and pies!! All delicious. However my meal from the breakfast menu was terrible and coffee was not great either. Service was shocking too.

Only good for bakery services.
Tessa
I ordered a sandwich and a iced coffee and both were amazing. Both arrived quickly and were very tasty. It is also just off the main road and there is lots of parking.

Since they asked for the place to be reviewed on Zomato i decided Id have the pleasure of telling them what's wrong with the place. Firstly I got an $8 sandwich which takeout the mungbean and have more flavoured sauce it would be worth the price. Now for the appalling part, the service . The Asian cashier was quite unfriendly and unprofessional, she came out eating food infront of customers and when I asked for my sandwich toasted she said I'll have to see about that.... Obviously she was reluctant to do it because she didn't want to miss the social gathering out the back. Also the music wasn't loud enough to cover the yelling laughter and SWEARING from the staff at the back. Just trying to eat my sandwich while I hear the good old f word thrown around here and there. I'm not a prude but there were children around. Wouldn't come back ever
Ross Collett
Sadly unimpressed with the experience today. Coffee, food, and service were cold :-( not one smile in the place. Not a lot went right to be honest.

Had late lunch at the Devonport Stone Oven Bakery & Cafe. Staff were busy as the large cafe was full! I ordered a sandwich that had sesame seed buns with bacon, egg and other ingredients in it. I didn’t have it toasted because I wasn't given the option to by a staff member and I didn't know it could be done. I also had a bowl of fries with garlic aioli. It came in a flat bowl with a decent amount of chips which I shared with friends. The sandwich was on display so I received that first. I think it took 10-20mins for the fries to arrive - this gives an idea of how busy it was on a weekend.

It was a satisfactory meal and didn’t mind the bustling atmosphere.
Annie Ren
A great bakery that stocks a mouth-watering range of pastries, bagels and cakes. It's also located in the central hub of Devonport, so having a coffee and something from their cabinet is a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon!
Parik Andhare
The service here was good but nothing exceptional. The did on the other hand was great. Go for the bigger dishes for breakfast and lunch like their Big breakfast or The burgers. Complete value for money. The fish fingers and chicken nuggets were a bit of a let down as there were hardly any nuggets and the basket was just full of fries.
Still worth going to.
Joy Maralit
Cozy little busy Cafe/ Restaurant.. service was pretty good, food was up to par. l ordered pancakes with Bacon. first few bites was amazing but it got too sweet by the time I was half way of my 3 layered pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup all over it. had a good branch though.
Barbara Egerton
Went for lunch today. Disappointing. The service was appalling. The girl on the till charged us for our lunch, then came back TWICE to charge us more for items she had omitted. No apology. There was no cutlery in the cutlery containers. Very scruffy man was clearing tables putting dirty dishes into a plastic basin. Not a good look. The incorrect tea was served, and the ham and cheese toasty arrived untoasted. I asked if it was toasted. The reply - "You wanted it toasted??" The banana cake was dry and solid. All in all - not a good experience.

Popped in for lunch, and with it being a chilly day, thought I would try their soup. The soup of the day was either Creamy Mushroom OR chicken and leek - as I felt like a nice heavy creamy soup, I asked the lady at the counter if the chicken soup was cream based. She asked someone in the kitchen and the answer was no - so I proceeded to order the creamy mushroom soup. I found a seat and waited for my food. The waitress came over with my soup and as she arrived declared that she had ordered the mushroom soup but had received the chicken soup - she walked off and asked the kitchen for a Creamy mushroom soup. While I was waiting I over heard the waitress' discuss between themselves that the mushroom soup wasn't creamy and it needed to be amended on the menu board - which they then did. A little while later my "not creamy" mushroom soup was delivered to my table. I explained to the owner / manageress (not sure what she is but no customer service experience what so ever) that I had asked for a creamy soup, to which she pointed to the board and told me that it wasn't creamy - Really? That is because your staff changed it after I had ordered it.
No apology, no how can I fix this for you. Worst service ever - to be honest, I would have been OK with the soup if someone had come over to me earlier when they had realised the issue and addressed it then, but instead of communicating they decided to wing it and hope I wouldn't notice. Big mistake, I will never return, which is a pity as I work in Devonport and had lunch at least three times a week with you. Lucky for me there are other restaurants in Devonport that actually care about their customers and some of them are actually better priced.

Stone Oven is the place to go for fantastic breads and pastries but the coffee and other food such as eggs for breakfast are a let down. The place has atmosphere but the reputation of the staff for surliness is justified. Will keep going for the bread, croissants and pastries - nice spinach baked pies / pastries as well.
Christine
Wow, this is one place that serves value for money. I ordered the pancakes. They were fresh, tasty and the serving size was huge! I couldn't eat it all. Nicely presented with blueberries (only a few cooked ones) in the middle and 3 large pancakes stacked. Warning: you need a sweet tooth for this dish because it is all sweet.
Billie Kessell
I have been visiting Stone Oven for ten years and it has consistently been the busiest cafe, with the biggest range of food and bread in Devonport. The bread is seriously good and the baked goods are delicious. The staff are always friendly and helpful.
Genie @ BunnyEatsDesign
We stopped by Stone Oven for a quick bite after a swim at a nearby beach. We came at a funny time, just before 5pm and I think they were between lunch and dinner shifts. We were shown their evening menu which was primarily a burger menu which looked great. Not much ambience at that time as there weren't any other diners but we sat outside to soak in the lovely weather and take in the street outlook.

I ordered a Spanish Burger with homemade beef patty, chorizo, cos lettuce, halloumi cheese, tomato, aioli. My friend ordered the Vegie Burger with homemade chickpea patty, cos lettuce, tomato, halloumi cheese, Chargrilled capsicum, aioli, relish. The guys both ordered the Beef Burger with homemade beef patty, bacon, cos lettuce, tomato, cheese, aioli, relish. We had 2 orders of fries to share.

The burgers came out quickly and were a good size. All the beef burgers were well seasoned, but the chickpea patty was pronounced a bit bland. I would have liked the chorizo in my burger to be spicy but that's just personal preference. Fries were good, just enough to go with the large burgers.

Service was fine, food was pretty good. We had 2 for 1 Entertainment Book vouchers making this visit great value.

Happy to return if in the area again.

Been there several years ago and used to like the cafe. However, our last visit was not as good as before. Coffee is weak and warm. Meal was also tasteless. Only good thing was the dessert.

Honestly has one of THE BEST biscottis in the whole of Auckland! I always go here with my sister all the way from newlynn. Well worth the time and gas. Haha :)

Came all the way to use the voucher, lined up and by the time we get to cashier its 12.01 and they refused to take our order (because it says last order before midday on the voucher)... disappointing! We spent that time lining up, and the person ordering right before us got to use his voucher. This kind of customer service is really unappaling. We left and lunched somewhere else... ain't giving business after that.

It is the day of the half marathon and seems to be the only cafe ready for an in flux of people. The chap behind the counter explained he had been doing it for 16 years and was an old hand, MAYBE NOT me thinks. The total cost for a big breakfast and a Long Black $28 seems expensive (I am gluten free so the $3 for bread does not help) but if it's good price should not matter. All in all the worst service and breakfast I have ever had. The food was tasteless and a pool of fluid under the food made it worse. Butter was so hard I could not use it which wasted my $3 toast. When I gave the plate back with 90% of the food still on it I got no question as to why I did not eat it (Inedible is why) Coffee was forgotten so came 30 minutes after the food was taken away and after I asked for it again. If I could give no stars I would. Don't waste your money on this place!! Go and lick the road outside it will taste better, you will get better service and it will cost you less.

We visited this place 3 days ago and had a bite to eat and coffees while we were in the area. This is one of the worst place we have been to in a very long time, not sure what the other good reviews have seen in this place.

Upon entering, several of the tables were covered in dirty dishes that were not cleared for the better part of our stay and the furniture was tired and shabby. Second of all, after we ordered and sat down, I glanced up and froze.. Their ceiling is covered in these canvas drapes things, which would create an interesting effect if they were not covered in cobwebs and absolutely FILTHY brown from the rain and dust.. I found myself looking into my food to make sure nothing fell into it from the ceiling above.

To top it all off, the service was appalling too.. We ordered, no smiles, no thank you, and definitely no attention given once the order was placed. Never EVER again...

I came here with a friend, after hearing it was meant to be quite good. It wasn't particularly busy and most of the staff weren't actually doing anything, but they somehow forgot to bring out my friend's cabinet meal. They then delayed it by a further ten minutes when asked for it a second time after it had already failed to appear 15 minutes after ordering it. When she approached the counter to ask about it the staff were reluctant to acknowledge her and took their time in doing so, as if having a silent debate about who actually wanted to serve the customer. Because, that's not what you're getting paid to do, right? This left my friend feeling pretty agitated as she was sure it was because she had gone to school with some of the staff, although she didn't really know them. Is this any way to treat a customer, whether you do or do not recognise them? Coming from years in hospitality, I was disappointed (to say the least) to receive this service. I will not be returning. But I will definitely be spreading the word.

Family friendly? I think not.
Being another wet Sunday in Auckland we decided to hunt out a family-friendly cafe. This was recommended because it has a designated play area, so I checked out the hours on their webpage. Open til 4 on a Sunday - all good - we travelled the 15km there and got there just before 3. About to order, we notice that the back section has been roped off for cleaning, including the play area. Upon enquiring if it might be possible for our littlies to play there, we were told in no uncertain terms no. Even after I explained that that had been the only reason we'd come and despite there being nobody actually cleaning in there. Very disappointing. We left, eyeing up the delicious-looking food in the cabinet as we walked out. What a shame we won't be back to try it.

I descended upon Devonport Stone Oven Bakery & Cafe almost famished, wanting to devour everything for all the sandwiches and wraps in the cabinet looked delicious. And it tasted delicious too!

The decor is pretty plain but it's big with enough room for the whole family. The service is efficient. The price is reasonable. Probably the best cafe I've been to in Devonport.

Have always wanted to eat lunch here but it is always so busy. This time managed to grab a table without any problems thinking we had just missed the main rush (it was 1pm). We were told the wait was 25 minutes. It ended up 50 minutes. After asking the surly waitress where our meals we were told "you knew there was a wait" - no apologies. It could have been forgiven if the meals were good but alas no. My husbands eggs benedict was 30 seconds away from being hard boiled eggs. If we hadn't been so hungry and hadn't had to wait 50 minutes, he would have sent his meal back.
Such a huge disappointment. Their cabinet food always looks delicious. Just don't bother ordering from the menu.

This place is great!!
I recently took a group of friends out to brunch at Stone Oven. The owners sure were smart to start a cafe here, the sun shines right inside.
We visited on a Saturday so it was quite busy but the cafe has so much seating available (inside, along the footpath and outdoor deck area) that we found a table for four easily.
The coffees were hot and delicious, and a friend commented that theirs was the best soy coffee they'd ever had.
We had the pancakes (huge!), bacon eggs benedict, the mussels of the day (with gluten free toast) and the beef and bacon burger. All were top notch!

I was also impressed with the staff. All were smiling but efficient, must be what makes this cafe so popular!
Will definitely be coming back to Stone Oven.

Visiting Devonport for the day (Sunday) stopped at the cafe for brunch. A nice menu, fabulous looking baked goods on display.
Order standard bacon and eggs, poached and scrambled, teas and coffees.
As we were waiting I noticed a couple of things:
1) the staff weren't talking to each other. There was no banter, camaraderie, feeling as if they enjoyed their jobs
2) I was appalled to see not just one but two of the staff with food tongs tucked into their apron strings at the back with the plate of the tongs hanging down by their bums! For one of them - a girl in next to no shorts - this was precarious to say the least - and most unhygienic!
The food arrived - the bacon and eggs good - but the bread? Oh my gosh! The bread. It was like chewing through the densest of dough that could be cooked. It was unnecessarily heavy and ruined the meal by making it too stodgy.
Look - a lovely venue and clearly suppliers of good product and produce but hey - enough with the next to no shorts and the tongs by the bum? A no no in my books.

Usually I went there for a coffee and a muffin which I always enjoyed very much. I had lunch there once which was also very good. The best was the bread that I had bought. Once they had the 100% rye bread which was one day old for $3 which was excellent. I appreciate that I can also come there to work as they have free wifi, but unfortunately it is rather slow.

I wouldn't mind longer opening hours, but 4:30 is at least better than others.

It was very busy when we visited, so we decided to take out. The line took a while to be processed, but I guess if it is busy then people like this place!

The food in the cabinet looks great - a large selection of filled rolls, a lot of pies (including vegetarian options) and sweets as well. Not sure if they have a cafe style menu or not.

The beef roll and sausage roll were great, coffee was good but the muffins let it down - a bit dry and lacking excitement.

Having said that, I'll still go back next time I'm in the area, just won't buy any muffins again (we had 3 different muffins and none were great).

Manager has a very crappy attitude to complaints. Too busy all the time so they don't care if people come back or not toilets not clean, no non-smoking outdoor section, yet supposed to be child friendly. Child's play area pretty dirty.

This place needs a jolly good face lift! It's got tired and grungy decor and it would seem to me that who ever owns this place feels that it's so bustling with customers (which it is) that it doesn't need to spend on updating the interior. I suppose they have a point, but I still resent going here and sitting down to have my coffee and cake in unappealing surroundings. This will catch up with them eventually, surely?! The grottiest thing about the place is the ceiling... it's got fabric suspended from the ceiling which looks like it has been the 30 years and is covered in dust and dead bugs. C'mon, pull it down!! It's actually a fire risk. They have a good range of bread available to buy, which I have bought many times, however it's not always fresh which is disappointing when paying $6 a loaf. The upside of the Stone Oven is that it has a kids play area which is a life saver for parents of little kids, has good coffee and a very wide range of cabinet food. I have never ordered from the menu so can't comment on this.

This place is always busy and we always go when we visit Devonport. Good fair prices $14 for bacon and eggs, and kids pancakes (they get 3 big ones) with syrup and blueberries for only $6.50 each. Food is consistently good and coffee good too. Yes it can be a little slow when busy so it pays to get there early (for breakfast that is).

Like a child walking into a lolly shop; the excitement to see all the colourful food. The variety and selection is overwhelming. Never had a bad meal there. There are different varieties of salads, pastries, cakes, pies and quiches and the list goes on. The cooked breakfasts are generous in portions. Great beverages and the service is good and fast.

Not quite gourmet but very satisfying.

This place is a Devonport institution. I love to hate it. Yet despite all of the cafes in Devonport I do go back.
On the good side, the coffee's better than average, there's a kids' playground [which closes about 3pm just as school comes out], it's large and it's not too quiet. The bakery items are very nice.
On the down side, it could do with a damned good scrub and some ugrading of the furniture and decor. At times service can be dreadfully slow. But that's not all the time.
