Review Calliope Road Cafe - Devonport

Timothy Etheridge
An oasis in this part of Devonport. BUT Almond flat white is Almond MILK not almond syrup! The egg and bacon pie - use an Air Fryer not a microwave, please! Soggy pastry was disappointing.

Wow stunning flavors in this Cafe, the Beef and Shiraz pie melted in our mouths so tasty, decent crust, no leaks, melt in your mouth meat with distinctive Shiraz, I brought 3 extra to take home for dinner tonight - was assured plenty out the back if I wanted more :) but in the cafe, was served with the optional side salad, fresh n crisp, with lovely dressing with hints of sesame oil. We shared a carrot and apple muffin, no shortcuts in this cafe, they have made everything to be nourishing and tasty, little layer of cream cheese icing, nuts, and a wee bowel of tart natural yoghhurt made a melody of perfect flavor combinations. We sipped our delicious coffee's, made by a very experienced barrista to finish. We will be back!!! Thank you for the beautiful energy in your food, it tasted even better than it looks, and it all looks wonderful. So hard to find food that tastes loved these days!!! Staff were friendly and attentive to boot. We watched a huge ship leaving the Harbour, with the sun on our backs around our meal, (Pie photos in my kitchen with my own vegies at dinner later).

Good amount of spacing between the tables. The dishes were really tasty. We got the bulgogi burger and mushroom dish. The portions were ok but could have been a bit more for anyone with a good appetite.

An excellent local cafe offering great service and quality food. Even the cabinet food looked delicious.

Have been going here on a casual basis for a few years, good service, food is nice, daily newspapers for diners, nice artwork on the wall. Coffee here is better if you ask for a double shot.

Superb certified organic coffee here plus all free range eggs and meat with Gluten free options. Plenty of free parking on nearby streets. We had GF eggs benny and a blat. Both were fantastic and well priced. Highly recommended.

A lovely spot. Great food at good prices.

The food and coffee here is great with very generous portions. The Vietnamese chicken salad is amazing. In a great location, decor could do with a lift, but otherwise fine.

Bought a $5 brioche that wasn't cooked in the middle, really wasn't feeling the atmosphere and they had an incredibly small selection of cabinet food

Came I and wet Sunday morning on my way home after a poor attempt at exercise. Very much a place with locals and the small crowded space makes it very nosing on a wet day. Food choice was limited and coffee was OK but felt a tad burnt. Staff were friendly and the price was quite good. Functional and worth another visit.

I visit Devonport every few weeks to catch up with a friend. We always get together at Callope Cafe in the afternoon as it has an easy atmosphere and the coffee is exceptional. I have never had a bad coffee here, and that was what prompted me to write this review. It is rare to get a consistently good coffee, normally from time to time you get a new or temporary staff member who lets the side down. Never here. So well done Calliope!

We seldom try much of the menu, but the eggs and pie I have tried when peckish were always exactly as you would expect. So no letdown there. I have noticed a move to free-range recently and that seems to be the trend around the town, so they are not resting on their laurels.

We make the trip as a family to this café every few weeks since we found it about a year ago. It’s a hidden gem. We have always been delighted with the food and the coffee. There’s empty plates all round every visit. Their food is superb, the coffee is great and the staff are friendly and quick. Plus they don’t mind going that extra bit further when we have a special request (my wife is on a gluten free diet and she loves her options here). We also love the cafes location and after our meal we follow the stunning view down Huia Street and along the waterfront back to the ferry and shops.

Went for coffee this morning and it wasn't good either for me or my friend. She ordered a smoothy, she had it out of the bottle, she was expected a fresh one. I had a savory timbale, I tried it and left it. It was blend and most of all at least few days old. Terrible. For the scenic view, it is not true, unless a street is scenic. The view is around the corner, not where the cafe and tables are. My friend and I won't go back there, very disappointed.

Truly great coffee! Relaxed, local feel, well-priced - just what you need in the neighbourhood.

The coffee here is the best I have had on the North Shore (probably in Auckland). Food is lovely and the staff are great. There are great options for a snack or a full meal and several vegetarian options. I highly recommend stopping at Calliope Road Cafe when in Devonport

Went here for breakfast today on impulse. We are real foodies and like to go out to breakfast often, sometimes twice a week. This place struck me as so special I had to tell others about it. Within a couple of minutes of being there we both had a real feel-good feeling which lingered for the duration of our visit and well beyond. The atmosphere was very relaxing, business was steady but not too full-on, cabinets had delicious very unique and creative food for sale (so enticing we had to buy a few things for later on). As a vegetarian, I was totally excited to see so many options available to me. We ordered breakfast and drinks - all good quality. I ordered the Colcannon with mushrooms - a leek and onion potato mash with poached eggs and hollandaise. Very delicious, very filling. My partner had a French Brioche oozing chocolate. The staff were very welcoming and friendly in a genuine way. The cafe was spacious and we nabbed some really comfortable soft padded chairs. My partner had a peep of the sea, and I delighted in having the street view where I was entertained by the gorgeous canine visitors to the cafe. What a fantastic kick-start to a Sunday!

I wanted to take a friend out for breakfast, something simple and not over priced. Calliope Road Cafe was just the ticket. A good hearty breakfast that was reasonably priced and nicely presented. The coffee was good and service friendly.

We were this cafe's very first customers ever this morning. It opened it's doors to the public for the first time at 7.30am to find two mums and four kids waiting to get in.

(Actually we'd promised the kids breakfast there, but forgot they needed to be at school for basketball practice at 8am)
Lovely venue. Really sunny. Warm. Staff friendly if a bit flustered. It was their first day however.

The coffee was good. I had a latte.
Only the kids ate (becuase the mums are training for the Auckland Half Marathon and couldn't eat before a run).

The kids meals were good value for money. $7 each. That's good becaues it means that we will return. I am price conscious and having reasonable kids' food is important for me to open my wallet.

Well done. I wish the owners all the best in their venture.

Ordered the Colcannon brunch with salmon which seemed a great idea. What a let down, they must have used one tiny slice of salmon from the whole pack and there was hardly any of the potato base. It was about $18 and terrible value.
