Review Riba Fish & Chips Cafe - Devonport

For the price, it’s amazing. Sauces etc are extras but still, very value for money compared to other shops along the street. Where can you find NZD 13 fish and chips in 2023?

The vegetarian burger was nice and we loved the kūmara and pumpkin fritters! Food is quite expensive though and scoops are not as generous as other places, but it is Devonport. However, the staff are lovely :)

I stopped here to buy some fish and chips and take them to Victoria mountain to enjoy my food with a view over Auckland skyline. They offer different kinds of fish which was the first time for me to have fish options.the most expensive was the blue cod for 9$ which was the cheapest I have seen in New Zealand so far. I took my blue cod, chips, tartar and aioli sauce to go and boy what a meal and what a sunset I had.

They have $9 package with a good portion. There is an indoor seating area. Convinience location not far from the Ferry Terminal.

Local delights of New Zealand. Fish and Chips, with fishes that I've never heard of. Terakihi fish and Red Gurnard. Terakhi fish tastes more like snaper, soft and mild. Red Gurnard meat is more solid and more fishy. Other than fishes, oyster and Paua (a type of abalone) is also breaded and fried. . Food : 4/5 Service : 4/5 Price : $$ Place : 3/5

Just bought the $17 pack for the missus and me. Monstrous sized portion. Really nice fish. Will definitely be coming again!

Fresh & a bit expensive but I guess it's worth your buck. We catch a ferry over to devonport from the city once a week just to eat at their places. Guarantee a 10 out of 10

Well priced, crispy chips , juicy fish in thin butter. We had $20 pack - 3 hoki + 1.5 chips . - kids loved it

Good, fresh fish n chips. Better if you eat in. Burgers are not too bad either.

Visited this place based on reviews on google. Wasn’t disappointed..fresh perfectly cooked fish and chips. Had the Blue cod which was delicious along with some battered mussels and (imitation) squid rings. My only criticism was the portion of the fish..at $9.00 a piece, there wasn’t much of it. Overall though a good feed.

Visited another fish and chip establishment in Devonport which was closer to the ferry building that had expensive pricing. Went to Riba fish and chips and got the $7 pack and a special burger. Great value for money. Burger was huge and enough for 2 people. Would definitely recommend Rita. Will be going back :-)

Lovely fish and chips, with nice grilled fish option. Clean cafe like tables to sit at. Friendly staff. A nice clean toilet available (the small things! Very helpful when our toddler announced she needed to go). Only disappointment was the burger - too much sauce. Otherwise good experience. Would definitely go back.

Always fresh and tasty, great value for money, friendly staff.

Fish and chips as weekend dinner. Nice and big portion, suit for take away or dine in. I also ordered their fried oyster. Yummy

Hit the spot, absolutely perfect! I love how the batter isn’t too heavy and the fish was a good amount for what you pay for and fresh. The chips were golden and again not over oily. Will be back soon

I've grown up eating burgers and chips as my own family owns one for more than 20 years now. But this shop makes the more incredible cheese burgers and their chips are always crispy and salted to perfection! I cant get enough of it! my preferred choice when i am in the area, and affordable pricing especially in such a nice area. Would highly recommend their cheese burgers, they are never oily and their homemade meat patties have a touch of onion in them which add great texture and taste. Definitely hard to find a store that still makes their own meat patties in their burgers now! Would say their burgers are gourmet without the high price!

Had horrible fish and chips here, fish was over cooked and dry, tasteless chips which definitely needed more salt tasted like cardboard.
Won't be rushing back anytime soon.

We bought some fish and chips from here last Wednesday night. We ordered the Tarakihi. It was dry and horrible. It was obviously old and past it's sell by date. It should not have been sold. My car smelled terrible for several days after taking the food home from Riba, appox 3 km. Two of the older family members had minor stomach problems after eating the Tarakihi. We were very disappointed as we have bought from Riba in the past and the food has been ok. Never again! The only positive was that the chips were ok.

The best fish and chips! Batter on fish light and crispy. Chips are chunky and crunchy...where the inside is soft. We ordered the kids burgers and dang those burgers are huge! Bun is soft, patty is hand made and ingredients are fresh. The price we paid was ridiculously cheap for the quality of food we got. So happy to have come across this place. Will be back. Customer service is on point. Lovely lady. Shop itself basic yet charming. We love it!

This place is consistently good for fish and chips. I have had it about a dozen times and was always happy with my meal. The dining area is basic but most people take their food away.

Best fish and chips on Devonport With nice burgers and always has good quality fresh fish.
Pricing is higher than others but they deliver the goods.
Food: 3.5 ***
Service: 3.5***
Atmosphere: 3***
Worth it: 4****
Price range: $6-$20/ person

Freshly deep fried fish & chips with reasonable price, nothing fancy really in this kind of fish & chips shop, choose from hoki, snapper etc., both fish & chips were delicious.
This shop has dining area which is better than the takeaway only type.

The best fish and chips in Auckland. Never a disappointment. I wouldn't go anywhere else, the price and service blows me away Everytime.

Don't bother with burger fuel, MacDonald's etc. Go here.

When my boyfriend and I first arrived to devonport, we were craving some fresh, hot (not spicy hot) chips. This fish and chip shop, delighted our taste buds and fulfilled our cravings. Smelt a big fish in the shop but otherwise tasty and quick!

The best fish and chips I had in my life. The fish was cooked perfectly and was very fresh. The chips were crispy and they were a good colour.

Very satisfied with the taste!! Highly recommend trying out here because in my opinion, it's the best fish and chip place on the shore. The burgers are really good and the fish are tasty as well as the crunchy batter. Cheap yet good quality :)

Best Fish n Chips I've had on the shore. Fresh fish and good chips and they always serve with a couple of slices of lemon. Great service also

We ordered 4 different fishes just for a quick Bite and to share among ourselves. It was absolutely divine but we didn't have any seasoning or sauces which was disappointing. With that being said, I'll definitely go there again.

Really enjoyed the snapper and chips, also had calamari bites and kumara fritter, really good value for money, all tasty 😋 light and crispy batter. No salt, pepper or vinegar on tables though.

Good value for a quality fish an chips. I have lived in Devonport since the 1990s and avoided this place due to a rude and cantankerous owner. I heard it had changed qA-hand a few years ago so I came back and was glad I did. Chips are not fatty and use good oil. Also the batter is very crisp on fish and lightly done.

I lived in Devonport for 2 years and ate at Ribas at least once a week. Always got the $6 fish and chip special and it was always very good. Great value for the money.

Went there today; the establishment looked clean and tidy so we ordered 4 Tarakihi and chips to take away, the order was ready quickly and we left.
When we opened the pack we ate the chips which to a good standard for takeaway fish and chips, but the fish tasted and smelled as though it was very old/off; we were unable to eat the fish at all.

Fish of that age/state you would never cook for yourself at home to eat, so for the staff to cook it up and sell it to people at a high price is appalling; surely they should have lower health rating for serving up off fish.

Would never go there again.

Just went to this place on the weekend, and I was really disappointed with the takeaways. I brought two fish burgers at $8 each (which is quite expensive) and the fish in both of the burgers tasted off! I thought it was just me but got three others to try and they said the same thing. Absolutely shocking that they can serve off fish. They shouldn't be in business and I would have gone back to get a refund but did not have the time, as we spent the day with the kids walking around the north head tunnels. I really wonder about the two positive comments on about this takeaways, they look like they are written by the owners HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO AVOID THIS PLACE.

We always used a fish and chip shop in Victoria Road but as soon as it changed ownership it was awful. So we got referred to this one. On the last two occasions the fish and chips were ok but then we decided to go for a fish burger and a specialty chicken burger. Both were awful, uneatable. The chicken was as tough as an old boot the fish was dry and lettuce old and mangy. We can eat a lot of things but not that. Again another poor dining experience in Devonport. We now go to Takapuna or the city.

This place is the clean grade A fish and chips. I had no idea what to order but the stuff helped us and they even made the food in time however we asked for. Everything was nice and perfect :) recommend!!!

I've been looking forward to writing this review - I wouldn't advise going to this eatery, it isn't award winning any more, it's changed hands. Different owners now and not to the standards it once was - very average food, fish burger was bland and donuts were old. Disappointing to say the least - then we had drama in correcting our order, and the counter person/staff had the nerve to argue with us about what we ordered. Rude staff, and definitely not the best fish n' chips in Devonport any more!!

this place is disgusting!!!!

sold us bad fish then when i went down to discuss it with them they told me i was wrong

said that it had only be defrosted for 2 days and was fine???

eat here at your own risk!!!

Riba Fish & Chips in Devonport is absolutely excellent. You only have to wait about 10 minutes. The chips are nice and crisp, not oily or greasy and they are made with vegetable oil. They are the best chips in Auckland. Their burgers are great as is the rest of the food on their menu.
