Review Catch 22 - Devonport

Anna Magnusdottir
I think one of the best fish and chips I tried. The fish was just amazing. The potato tatters and fries were just okay imo:)
William Mahoney
Very tasty and filling food, and it was only $16.50!. Me and my friend shared one scoop of chips and one snapper, and were very full by the end, even though we only got half each. The lady working there was very polite, and the building was nice. A cute little sparrow shared some chips and rated this place 5 stars too. Definetly reccomend. (amazing quality photo)

Best fish and chips I’ve had in ages, fresh hot Crispy chips. Beautiful hoki. Id definitely be back. A lovely touch was a slice of lemon for the fish. A great lunch had by all.

Absolute hands down, Best hoki fish and chips Ive ever had. I do recommend their Aioli sauce which is better than their tartare sauce and before you leave just ask if they added lemon (if you like it with with your fish) . Was a little disappointed for the Small portion of chips received for what I payed but then once tasted eventually overlooked it, since I'm glad for the quality. It's quite sad since Im going back home soon which is in Australia and nowhere I know of, with fish and chips up to this standard.

Beautiful Fish and Chips! Unlike some takeaways, you eat what you've ordered instead of just batter. And also, the batter at Catch 22 isn't oily either. It is a little bit more expensive than most takeaways, but honestly, you get your moneys worth. 10/10.

We tried our first fish and chips in Auckland and no doubt it was best. The snapper with chips and lemon was good. The only disappointed thing is you have pay extra for garlic or tomato sauce.

Awesome service and delicious, fresh fish and chips. Great location, across the road from the park, kids playground, beach and public toilets

I was in hurry but they made it on time, and soft noodle was awesome! Recommend to give it a try.
Sherryk Koswara
Small portion of chips for its cost but cooked to crispy perfection.
Paul Sayers
Top level food and top level servings sizes. We booked in for a team of 15 and they were able to cater for us with extra requests and made us feel as comfortable as possible. Will definitely return next time we are in Auckland. If you’re searching for a place to eat this is such great value for money.

Just had very nice snapper & chips from Catch 22. The fish fillet was generous size & nice n thick too. Perfectly cooked in lovely crispy batter. Chips were good too. Perhaps a little on the pricey side but for the size of the fillet & quality overall, I was happy.
Julia Strickett
Best fish and chips in Devonport by far. Super fresh fish.
Dianne Mills
Delicious fish and chips. Owners very friendly and allowed us to eat inside as it was night and chilly outside . Would recommend this place
Vanessa Cox
Very pleasant staff, and the fish and chips were absolutely delicious.
That man in kathmandu.
I visited here the first time, a few months ago with my friends and since then it has become my favorite fish n chip spot. They have good choice of fresh fish and food quality is excellent every time. They do great chicken fried rice too. Definitely recommend this place for your lunch, brunch or dinner when visiting Devonport.

Yum! Such a yummy treat! They are friendly, affordable and provide good quality fish and chips. It's in a really handy spot, so if you are heading down to Devonport park or the beach, grab some hot chips!

Well a nice trip at the weekend to Devonport, walking along the shops and beach front. Stopped by a great Fish and Chip shop "Catch 22". Great selection inducing some Chinese food, but had the Snapper and chips, on the beach wall, they were fresh, crispy batter and the chips cooked to perfection, highly recommended.
Shannon
Chips were good but the fish and potato fritter were over battered. The portion size of the chips was small, especially for the price which is on the higher end for a fish n chips store.
Jackson Young
This place makes some quality fish and chips especially their snapper which was nice and crisp.

The workers there were kind and the prices were reasonable.

Highly recommend if you ever visit Devonport.

We went to Devonport on Saturday and tried this takeaway. We got a bit of everything. The fish batter was light and crunchy. My family loved it.
Give Me Food
Haven't been here in a while and surprised it now doubles as a Chinese takeaway. Ordered 1 hoki ($4.50) and 1 chips ($4). Hoki is a bit expensive but ok with a decent batter. It's cut into two in the photo since we were sharing. But the chips, geez! To began with it's $4 which is a more expensive than your usual fish and chip shops. And the serving size is pathetic. What you see in the photo is exactly what we got. I reckon it could all fit into one paper cup. I wish I took it all home and weigh it so at least I can complain with a solid number. Lastly they were not even great chips. Not crunchy at all but quite stodgy. Overall quite disappointed. I know the location is good but seriously it's too expensive for very average food. There's no excuse for stingy portion of chips. I will not eat here again.

I really enjoyed the fish and chips, they where fulling without being oily. The service was fast and professional. 10/10 would recommend the chicken and the sweet and sour pork.

I’ve been told that catch 22 had a new owner 2 months ago, so I went along to try their vegetable stirfry. It was so fresh and crunchy also the Chinese lady was very happy and friendly! 5/5 stars I’ll defiantly go back again.
Claire Wheaton
The new owner has flipped this store around.

The chips are chunky and have just the right amount of salt. They were attentive with my request for a lot of lemon wedges and had deliciously crunchy Hoki.

As for the service, Anita was very welcoming, smiley and patient.

I could not be happier to recommend a fish and chip shop in Devonport

Absolutely delicious!

This place now has a new owner, and has revamped their entire menu. Authentic Chinese food, and their chicken wings are unbelievably tasty!

10/10 would recommend!

I went in at 6pm on a Saturday night and was surprised no one else was there. One couple were eating their food from a paper on a table inside the café. I gave my order but was concerned at the prices ! I enjoy Hoki at $3.50 at my local takeaway but $5.20 here was overpriced. As were those for Terakihi and Snapper. A description of the differences between the 3 species was visible on a blackboard but could be better written.

The meal came and I have to say the fish was acceptable but not up to the standard I have enjoyed. The chips were plentiful and acceptable. BUT the mussels were undercooked and too chewy. I suggest the middle part that is usually tough be removed in future . Notices re allergies need to be more prominent than on the wall under the counter and only visible when one sits down opposite the counter !

I hope these words can assist the owners in their way forward and help improve the way the premises are portrayed.
To see two big letters A in framed Certificate s was very good to see !
Calin Bogdan Anton Vrabie
One of the most disgusting fish and chips I had in a while!

And that was the opinion of my whole family and another two families who join us for a fish and chips afternoon. Very sad !
Michelle Ma Belle
I was a bit apprehensive to try this place based on the online reviews. However, on the day I visited, this place was so much busier than the others, so I figured that they must be doing something right!

The hot dog was a lot nicer than other takeaway places, the batter was light & crispy! The chips were thick and deep fried till perfectly golden. My husband was also happy with his hoki, said it was nice and fresh :) The only thing I found quite average was the fish cake, which was very bland unless you smother it with tomato sauce.

The only other complaint was how long the wait was, but in all fairness they did have a lot of orders to get through. All in all we enjoyed the food, and would not mind dropping by again for fish & chips :)

CHEATS Expensive, less quantity, slightly below average food. Ordered snapper but got basa fish instead.

We ordered 2 snapper fish and chips and 1 separate snapper. The quantity of the fishes was lesser than the actual size of a snapper. Felt like they cut two basra fishes into little peices and sold as 3 fishes.

The meals were all packed togeather which made it look like it was a lot but in reality its very expensive for what we paid. Was not snapper but basra we got .. cheats !!

Have tasted better fish and chips. The fish was a little below average but not worth for what you pay. Will probably not visit this place again.

Got this beach pack,I never had included in any seafood/fish and chips a doughnut (a small donut that does taste like a donut but why so dark in colour?) and a sausage/Pluto pup (pork sausage but the batter wasn't crunchy)

The ran out if tarakihis fish so we had the hoki and snapper instead
Snapped was nice but the hoki just fell apart
The potato scallops (not sure its called something else here) was dry and the batter was hard
Child were standard

My missus felt the fish was fresh but I didn't enjoy it as much as I should of
Angela Wells-Shaw
Expensive and very average food, hot dogs were over cooked and pretty much sausage on a stick. To make matters worse the guy who served me didn't so much as say a word throughout the transaction just the price.
Adam Kerr
$4.50 for the tiniest amount of overcooked chips I've ever had in Auckland, also... Seriously? $7.90 for one snapper fillet... Frozen might I add, as we could see the box it was being pulled from. Also, no other fish available besides the overpriced frozen snapper.
... Avoid.
Aira B Holland
Was very disappointed! The thing that puts me off was the rudeness of the lady with the glasses. Food is average. I've been coming here for years but never treated that rude. From now on I will not be supporting your store coz there are other fish and chips place where I can go to. Coming from a local, the Riba fish and chips is good plus they're nice to customers. It's just up the road as well. 26 Victoria st.
Mike
If you want fish and chips, this is the place to go. The food looks and tastes excellent. But what really makes it special is the attentive and speedy service of the staff.
Chloe Ellen Louise
Average chips - very overpriced for a small portion.
Over cooked hot dog.
Very rotten lettus in burgers.
Both fish burger & bacon/egg burger were disgusting.
Definitely would not recommend.
Mike
This shop should be closed down immediately !!!I wouldn't feed what's masquerading for fish and chips to the sea gulls .....over cooked and outrageous price !!! Made me feel ill ...just writing this review makes me sick !!,😡😡😡
Nick AutoTintz Campbell
Yuck. Do not eat from here. Everything was overcooked and overpriced. Cheese burger was so feral, hotdogs overcooked and chips were almost non-existant, overcooked and tasted funny. But that's not the worst of it, the potato fritters are made from play-doh. I'm totally serious. Not for human consumption! All up for 3 overvooked hotdogs, 1 scoop or should I say 10 chips (almost literally), 1 feral cheese burger, 1 DISGUSTING play-doh fritter, 1 small tomato sauce and 2 600ml drinks was $29 and we now feel sick. Not being brutal, just being honest.
Melissa Fry
Worst fish and chips I have ever had. Over cooked and just generally disgusting. Very expensive. Would not reccomend to anyone and would NEVER go back. Yuk.
Maeesylvie
I went here for a late lunch/early dinner and the fish was very oily-it was dripping-then a few hours later I found that I had an upset stomach-due to the use of too much oil? I'm not sure but it definitely felt like it- and straight after I threw up what was left of my fish and chips. I enjoyed the chips but the fish just wasn't for me.
Dave Wallace
absolutely Crap fish and chips charged me nearly $40 dollars for 2 snapper 2 lots of c hips and 4 chicken nuggets, the fish wasn't snapper it was flippin basra fillet and the chips were soggy WOULDNT TRUST THEM AT ALL
Braden Hunt
Decent fish and chips. We had hoki which seemed to be their 'normal' fish. Good sized pieces, and chips were good too. However the price is over the top considering. They're good, but not great.
Fylde
Pretty basic fish and chips mainly catering to day trippers to Devonport. Friendly enough but the fish is not very fresh. Basic selection available. The chips are nice and they seem to use good oil. Limited condiment selection.
Amy
Chips are delicious ONLY if you get chicken salt on them. Otherwise quite bland.
Best order = chicken nuggets and chips(chicken salt) so so so good!
Chris Sharpe
Generous serving of Terakihi and chips. Pieces of fish rather thin but lots of them (far more than the 6 pieces ordered). We would have preferred fewer thicker pieces - but apart from that we couldn't fault the meal. Nicely cooked and no bother getting the fish crumbed rather than battered. Overall a good experience

I am unable to even give this fish and chip shop a rating. I would prefer his shop is closed down as the food and I assume it was food was burnt and inedible for human consumption.
We returned the packet as we felt management needed to know how bad it was. As we returned it we were met with blank looks from a predominantly Asian and youthful staff.

our recommendation is go down the road to a better fish and chip shop. spare yourself the disappointment.

We have never complained about a fish and chip shop before but this one needs to be avoided.

Thank you for reading this and please go else where. ;D
Rosemarie Aduso
We ordered hoki, snapper and pineapple fritters with both plain and kumara chips. The snapper was nice but the hoki......!!!!
who knew that it was going to be double battered - a frozen, battered piece of hoki dipped AGAIN in batter and then fried. Without exaggeration the batter was apout two centimetres thick all around, all mushy on the inner lining, with a small sliver of fish inside. Disgusting and inedible.
I took the fish back to the shop along with a piece of the snapper to ask why there was such a difference and was then told about the double battering. That was it, no offer of a refund or replacement, as if it was perfectly acceptable.
Both types of chips were also undercooked.
We certainly won't be going back!
Akshat
The fish burger is really simple and tasty. The guy on the counter is really very polite and the place has a open kitchen so no funny take away business. The serving size is also good for the cost.
