Review Vault 21 - Dunedin

Joanne Hosie
We go here everytime we are in Dunedin. Have never had a bad meal or service. This visit I was especially impressed with Maggie who went above and beyond with servic. We have tried just about everything on the menu and it's all worth trying. I wish I could give 10 stars!

In Dunedin for a work trip and wanted to have one night at a good restaurant, so I did my research, read reviews of several places and ended up settling on Vault 21 .... I was not disappointed. I was indecisive about what to order and gave the waitress two options to choose from for me ... I got the lamb hot pot and .... ohmigoodness, it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I t was so good, I actually took a couple of mouthfuls that were too big and super hot, so had to slow down. Cannot fault a thing. The service was perfect, friendly and also non-intrusive. I wish I had another night so I could try my other option but, perhaps, next time. Thank You Vault 21 for an incredible dinner for one.

Pretty good fusion restaurant. Food is nice, portions for mains a tiny but thats kind of expected for type of place, some of the dishes are quite bland i.e the bang bang chicken and very pricey for what it is. I highly recommend trying the sweet and sour pork, it is delicious! Also the Japanese sunset cocktail was lovely. Asides from a small mix up everything was smooth!

It is a good place to visit with friends. Coffee was great, too. Thanks!

Food was good but a bit salty and lacked balance. I had the lamb hotpot. It wasn't really hotpot, more so lamb in gravy. Needed more vegetables. My partner had thr bang bang chicken which was really well done. The atmosphere is great and the price is ok. Service was friendly.

Vault21 kindly sponsored my blind date way back a few years (Street art for the first sight) and offered a free drink and small dish. I was definitely intrigued by their pretty extensive menu, decent pricing and ambience. I knew then I wanted to come back. Their menu was an asian inspired mix of small dishes and main kitchen meals, a very interesting take if you ask me. I got the espresso martini, my date got the Hangzhou cooler, and we both ordered the smoked ribs. Espresso martini for you coffee lovers out there, even though I'm not a huge fan of coffee, this was an icy blast! Couldn't finish it though, coffee is just too much for me! The hangzhou cooler was goooood, it was like sprite!!! Super delish. Smoked ribs smelt amazing, and they photographed really well under flash lol. The flavour was really exquisite, Smokey and sweet and sour with tang and spice. The meat was lacking a bit but overall quite tender and flavorful. They serve 5 pieces. The only con about the ribs were that some hits were slightly too charred. 4/5 Also a brief mention of their cutlery-they provide knife, fork and chopsticks. Very interesting. Found out that the owner was chinese, made more sense on the asian fusion twist of the menu!

An interesting visit. We arrived at 11.55am and walked through the front door. We were greeted by a young lady who told us they weren't open yet despite the door being unlocked. We were asked to come back so waited outside but were invited back in 3 minutes later, still before midday. Clearly the waitress was on a power trip. If you don't want customers walking in before midday then keep the door locked until you do open! We went on to have a nice meal and the food was lovely. The service did pick up and the other staff were nice.

Everything was amazing. Service was attentive but not interrupive. The atmosphere was very relaxed and casual. The food......I could not fault their food. We ordered a lot and each dish just tasted amazing. I am definitely coming back to Vault21 for more meals.

Great environment. DJ sending out good vibes 🎶 Friday night, so pretty busy, yet only a 30 min wait on food. Excellent range of 🍸 🍹. Excellent, happy service.

The Restaurant looked not as busy as the others as you walk up to it, however as soon as you get a look inside you can see that it is a popular place! As soon as we walked inside, we were greeted and taken to our seats. Lovely atmosphere, great service and the food was delicious as well.

Our waitress Izzy was incredible, as was the food, definitely a high quality experience to remember.

We live in California and have lots of tasty options for food. Vault 21 was just as flavorful and would rival San Francisco restaurants. They have so many gluten free options for my troubling dietary restrictions. Bang Bang chicken and the steak sandwich tasty. Even the latte was perfect.

Fantastic service, warm and friendly. Top food at reasonable prices. Popular spot for a Tuesday night. Please bring back the sweet and sour pork to the lunch menu. (asking for a friend!)

Went in just for a few cocktails and the bartender did not disappoint! Nice flavours and awesome presentation. Thanks for a great experience! Whiskey Apple Sour is a must!

The Vault 21 was recommended to us by the hotel we were staying at. It’s a trendy place with cool decor. I ordered the duck risotto and it was delicious. The duck was soft and the fat was rendered down, so delicious. Will definitely go back!!!

Love the atmosphere and vibe of the place, perfect for a fancy Saturday night out with friends. We ordered the roast pork belly steamed buns, plum wood smoked lamb rump bruschetta, smoked pork spare ribs, Korean fried chicken, and a couple of wines beers and sodas.

The pork belly in the steamed buns had somewhat crispy skin, and tender meat that was marinated well. The meat could have been more tender, it didn't really fall apart in your mouth.

Lamb rump bruschetta was great, it had a medium rare slab of tender lamb layered on top of a creamy bean salad that complemented the strong flavour of the pomegranate essence. It was cold and refreshing.

The pork ribs had a kick of spice and was sweet, salty, and sticky with the hoisin sauce. The meat didn't quite fall off the bone and was a bit hard in some places but it was still delicious.

Lastly the Korean fried chicken, it was nicely deep fried and the coating of batter was thin and crispy. The sauce was creamy although not very spicy. However I was disappointed because it was simply chicken bites, and not at all the authentic Korean fried chicken - including the sauce.

It came out to be 150 for 4 people so quite overpriced, but I would come from time to time for a fancy night out.

Sitting here in front of my empty plate, I am confused. I have never felt this way about a prawn before. I am overwhelmed and over eating but nothing will stop my madness. I have overcome my fear of bean sprouts after choking on one when I was 9, because the taste is just so moving emotionally. Lock me in this vault forever

Not the most exquisite Asian fusion I’ve had but definitely the most experimental! The wonton was wrapped in a crispy deep fried skin but the beef was rather dry and tough. The 12hr braised beef brisket was too, quite dried and low flavor. King salmon terrine wasn’t quite so smoked but the sesame wonton crackers were an interesting touch. The desserts were definitely a let down: a not-so-matcha cheese cake and puffs that were not that pleasing. Loved the ambience but hope to be back with better execution in food texture.

In all my years of dining, have I ever met anyone who does not know what the roe is on a scallop, even my 20 something son, who doesn't eat shellfish knows what a scallop it, Thank goodness for kiwi living. I am disappointed that even the chef didn't know, as I saw through the window as the waiter explained in detailed not only the shape, but I believe the colour. mmmmmm Disappointing.

We dined here on the recommendation of friends but were sorely disappointed. The food was underwhelming and the service was less than attentive. We had planned to have another drink and dessert but after waiting half an hour for our plates to be cleared we decided against it. Unfortunately we wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

A more modern approach to Asian cuisines. Settings both inside and out. Although we were seated inside, the openness of the venue itself is very welcoming. You still get to enjoy the crispness of the putter court. Great service from staff. Waiting time is minimal. Food absolutely amazing. Flavours explodes in your mouth. Great portions, even to share with company. Great atmosphere.

Went for Saturday night drinks and feed. Great atmosphere, funky tunes and absolutely delicious Asian fusion dishes. Perfect for sharing with friends.

Really loved coming here for dinner, great vibes and even better food. Service was really good too thanks to the very friendly staff. Will definitely be back again.

Fantastic atmosphere to chill out for the evening and enjoy a good meal, drinks and company.

Very impressed with the food, really flavoursome. Especially the wontons.

I would definitely come back here for a meal and recommend it to my friends.

I went with my Wife for dinner on a cold wet evening. We were looking to get out of the drizzle and am glad we wandered into Vault 21. It has a large dark interior room as well as chairs outside with heaters to keep you toasty warm. We ended up next the the DJ booth minus the DJ that night and a vault/safe room beside us safeguarding their bottles of champagne, wine, rum amount of tasty spirits on offer. Nice gimmick.

The staff were helpful and attentive and did give some good recommendations on the food.

The plates/dishes are for sharing, I would say 2 people per dish so it's a good place for groups.

We ordered the BBQ smoked pork spare ribs with sticky sauce, chili and peanut crumbles, which were a touch too sweet. They would have gone better if the sauce were more savoury. The Roast pork belly steamed buns, pickled cucumber, szechuan salt + BBQ sauce were not impressive with great flavour. The duck and hoisin sauce tacos with were also very good but the tacos were pretty solid/crispy so it broke in half when you bit it and some of the contents fell out. Finishing with the Crispy pork belly, sesame-cabbage, mash, roasted sweet apple, soy, black vinegar + chili oil was a great hit.

All in all it was a decent meal and it's worth a look in.

Great ambiance at night, with really cool interiors. Live music was also a nice touch. Food is sharing style, and are great twists on Kiwi / Asian cuisine. Kimchi chicken sliders were a highlight along with some really great grilled broccoli. Be a cool kid and come here.

Never expected this restaurant to serve fusion food. I always had doubt for fusion restaurant but when I tasted their taco-styled peking duck, I didn't expect it to taste very similar with the actual Chinese peking duck wraps. It was very good and with the crunchiness of the tortilla, it did create a good distinct style from the actual traditional wraps. A friend had BBQ pork ribs and she also complimented it although the size was slightly smaller than the usual Chinese pork ribs. The service was really nice. With a great value and this kind of food, I would definitely come back and try the others.

Again outstanding, very comfy and super friendly staff serving us. Started with new salty caramel moonshine... delish. Great recommendations from polite waiter, so good we ended up with 7 dishes! , the pork belly sliders are incredible.

Popped in here for dinner last night after the movies. Quick service by the staff. My steamed pork belly buns were delicious. My hubby had the Paua fitters which he throughly enjoyed. My daughter the beef sliders which were lovely. Would recommend!

Had the pork belly sliders and the Asian slaw. Really enjoyed the flavours and thought that the chefs combined the Asian flavours and gave them a western twist, quite well. However pork belly was not crispy at all and also thought majority of the food was overpriced. Came with a group and some people didn't enjoy their food so I think items on menu are a hit or miss.

Didn't read any info. of there before. When we passed there & saw some awesome meat dishes, we decided to have a meal. Ordered crispy pork belly and 12-hour beef brisket, both were tasty & lovely price. Pork belly could be thinner for easier chewing. Friendly staff, nice service.

We went here for lunch yesterday and shared several dishes. The pork belly bagette was really good as was this crunchy chicken with spicy sauce. I'll be keen to come back again for a few drinks in the sun
