Review Rhubarb - Dunedin

Roger Mancey
Cute little old Cafe. Coffee was awesome. My wife was nice to talk to and our friend paid for our food. Highly recommended when you go with us. Probably good with your friends too. Cakes were great.

Nice place to visit for a cuppa and cake. Good service from the staff. I like having a mocca. This time I followed it with ginseng green tea. I had a apple cake. Noticed a rubarb friend which I will try next time. Give Rubarb a try.

Decided to have a beef pastie with my latte. The beef pastie was out of this world. So flavorsome and the pastry was just right. Very rare I give 10/10 for food. Oh the staff are great too! πŸ‘

What a great place! Best food, best service, good prices. We're always made to feel welcome. We have breakfast and take-out, but they also do lunch. Definitely recommend going.
Russell Thomson
Great place for coffee and some lunch.

Fantastic place to eat out. Great coffee, food, service and atmosphere. Try their famous cheese muffins and classic Southland cheese rolls. Highly recommended.

I had the coconut pancakes and they were so good!!😳 They were actually hot and came with delicious banana and maple syrup^^

Good food and drinks. A nice cafe in Roslyn, working hard to provide good food in trying pandemic times, for which they have my admiration. Very tidy and clean. I do realise that masks are not popular, but it was unusual to see a cafe not using masks. They might or might not have an effect - hey, I don't know - but we get jittery when staff don't use them.

Great coffee Yummy Cheese Muffins

Very nice place. We had our breakfast there, and generous servings. The bread, awesome! I agree, very good coffee! And the service, was a bonus! Very friendly staff. Beautiful place to start the morning πŸŒ„

The brioche French toast was absolutely AMAZING, the texture was nice a moist, had a really nice sweet flavour, thus having it with a little bit of cream and refreshing rhubarb sauce added another element to the dish.
Presentation wise was average BUT THE TASTE WAS SOO GOOD 😍

I tried their Mochaccino and by far it's the best one in Dunedin! Surely a must try! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

I also tried their cakes and desserts which were delicious. Cozy environment on top of Dunedin. One of the best coffee shops in Dunedin in my opinion.

Decided to try Rhubarb for a solo Sunday Brunch - no Austin the dog on this one. Ordered the fried eggs on sourdough, black pudding and bacon and a flat white for circa $25. The flat white had a nice balance between milk and coffee and was hot (which should never be underrated). The breakfast was generous, the black pudding was amazing, eggs were runny (which is crucial) and the bacon was tasty. I would however liked the bacon crispy! All in all a great place for brunch.

Had a lovely lunch here today. My corn fritters were amazing as was my smoothie. My husband had the chicken burger which he said was really good. He couldn't finish the potatoes his meal was that filling. I was happy to see that there was many gluten free options here. Would come back again if in Dunedin.

I was impressed with the standard quality of all the meals we ordered today. I was equally impressed with the delicious Sicilian Apple Cake...the flavours devine and the texture was like a gourmet bread and butter pudding...slices of cooked apple and a nut layer..heavenly and perfect with the great coffee.

Known for really good coffee and croissants
I really like the salads that they have seasonally - my favourite is the lentil and beetroot salad , really yummy !
And the FRIDAY bakery slices !

Rhubarbs peppermint slice is simply divine! A must take home snack if you are ever there for lunch! I love the atmosphere of rhubarb and the high quality food served, it's one of the best cafes in dunedin.

Lunch at Rhubarb was lovely. Cute inside and had a nice cabinet selection. I ordered the Broadbean burger with fried potatoes and it was fantastic. It arrived promptly, was very tasty and so filling I couldn't finish it all but definately tried to!..I even took home a bliss ball for later. Plenty of gluten free options and I liked that it also pointed out sugar free options. Would happily recommend to others.

Rhubarb is an amazing cafe. Delicious food, great coffee, and the staff are really friendly. I love the homemade style baking it reminds me of home.

Great cafΓ© - always take friends there - staff very friendly. Sam & Helen the owners run a very professional operation here...and the tables are always full because of it.

Definitely recommend. Great wine selection too.

Food was nice but the coffee is very bitter and burnt, need better Barista, and the guy who owns the place scowly and offensive, puts you off going to the cafe seeing that behind the counter. Shame really.

Rhubarb is an amazing cafe. Delicious food, great coffee, and the staff are really friendly. The only reason you might not be able to get a table is because it is extremely popular. Rhubarb does the best omelettes ever!! As for all of the bad reviews about 'the surly bloke behind the counter', I assume you are talking about the owner, Sam. He is actually very friendly, and although he might not be the smiley type, that doesn't mean he is rude. Love rhubarb!!
Jacque
Yummy salads and best ever "rhubarb friands", however I stopped frequenting due to bad coffee experiences :( too bitter for me I'm sorry. Surroundings are quite neat - art deco butchery.

Everything said here about the sourness of the bloke behind the counter has been our experience too. Surly service takes the edge off even good coffee and food. Rhubarb is also noisy due to the hard services (ex butcher-shop tile walls). We go elsewhere now... Kiki Beware across the road not only has pleasant staff, it's sunny and child friendly.

I love Rhubarb! We go there quite a lot and I always love the cosmopolitan vibe, the food is always wonderful and the coffee superb. Sitting there enjoying the Roslyn buzz is always a treat, the service is great and as for Sam well I have always found him pleasant, I think he just has a very dry sense of humour!

Fairly nice local cafe. Some of the cakes are pleasant and tea is good. Wouldn't drive here especially but good if your in the neighbourhood.

Oh so good to finally find a consistently good coffee! Also got some great advice on wine for a couple of gifts (and for me). Am having to wean myself off the brownie though. Too damn good! Great staff as well, always smiling and friendly.

Pleasant atmosphere, smiling staff except the overweight scowling male behind the counter, excellent choice in menu, great coffees, wine bar as well, recommended.

Just visited for the first time. We were told a table should be available any second when after waiting 20 minutes it bacame clear that this was clearly untrue. Everyone else was waiting for their food too. The man taking orders at first ignored us when we tried to get his attention. When we finally spoke to him he was terribly rude and dismissive right off the bat. They could not provide a space for us to sit but he was very unwilling to cancel our order. When we finally managed to get a refund, we later noticed that he had shortchanged us! That just summarised the whole experience - rude, dismissive, incompetent and wholly unpleasant staff. Please Avoid if you actually want to enjoy your time eating out.

Coffee shop food, and OK for what it is. The only place I know of that can burn chips which are still raw on the inside!

The cream plastic seats are starting to look dated, they're tatty and could do with a good clean. The cafe has great potential, but lacks ambience.

But the worst part of this place is the chap who runs the place. He's sour-faced and scowled at us when we first walked in. He took our order OK, but hey, a smile don't cost nothing!

How can you rate this place as 3.5 star; it is clearly the best in Dunedin and thoroughly deserving of at least a 5 star rating.
Sue
The food was beautiful, service great & the coffee was good. And the wine selection superb. Loved it.
Dot
Very enjoyable for something light to eat or just a coffee. Pleasant staff and surroundings.
Coffee Geek
I've been here a couple times now and both times the coffee was hideous, bitter and burnt. I wont be given them the benefit of the doubt again!

Wow -I'd read the Cuisine review so decided to check it out while in Dunedin on business.....Definitely worth the trip "up the hill" to Rhubarb - and (for the tea lover) they even have Lady Grey tea (if you ask nicely....)
