Review Marbeck's Cafe - Dunedin

ROS8215
No doubt some of the best cabinet food in Dunedin. For something sweet try the almond croissant, and if you’re after something savoury don’t look past the pork fennel sausage roll. Great value for a decent serving including a salad of your choice. Coffees have always been good, hot and cold, and the free sparkling water is also a nice addition. Sometimes the service can be a bit hit or miss, however the food and atmosphere make up for it.

Marbecks have really upped their game, good coffee, consistently good food and efficient yet friendly service - top tier by any cafe standard but especially a mall cafe. New owners are doing an awesome job

Such lovely staff! I was in Dunedin for about three days for work purposes and i enjoyed getting coffee from here. The staff are so lovely and kind, my day started on a good note. And one must try their cheese scones!! So good, I can’t stop raving about it

Stopped by here for a quick coffee. The coffee was good and staff friendly. Very busy which is always a good sign. Very central as located in the Wall Street Mall. They also serve a lot of hot and cold food but did not try this during this visit. There is also a small shop which sells a variety of different food/cooking related items. Overall highly recommend this cafe to others.

First timer as I've always walked passed and they have been fulled with customers. Had today's special Risotto with green pea saffron and seared scallops. It was pretty tasty dish I think there too much peas as I ate all the scallops at the start. Hope people see it on the main menu. Chur

This is not a bad stop if you were shopping in the mall in central Dunedin. Service is pretty good generally, however, you get a feel that staff are rushed off their feet at times. It’s not unusual to see absolute no eye contacts as they go around and some running on the floor to bring back your meals. Coffees are good, baking is pretty good too, salads a bit average and lots of carb loaded cabinet food. Good place to buy a gift for a foodie friend of partner. Another quick solo visit while doing shopping in the mall. Tried freshly carved store made ham. Yumm. The French chef super friendly and knowledgeable, gave me a slice of the sourdough bread. Then this gorgeous cute waitress gave me some butter for my bread. Great chat, laughs, yummy food and spot on coffee. We have a winning formula here. Thanks Chin and the team Sunday shopping rest place. Good coffee, half chips done extra crunchy with double aoili. Perfectly executed. Very polite wait staff. Bought some ham from the deli, very scrumptious. The almond croissant was out of this world. Thanks team for yet another memorable experience.

Our regular go to for a coffee or lunch while shopping in town. The food hasn't changed for a long time - a change up would be nice. Please bring back the brioche scrolls! When I was breastfeeding my newborn during one visit, one of the staff was very kind and brought me water without me asking for it - so thoughtful ❤️

Cupcake was soft, moist, and had a velvety icing. Salad was good, one of the few places I found that does a good salad. The chicken waffle were very sweet from the sauce, with lots of sauce on the meal. Quite overwhelming with the sweetnest. Did not really enjoy it.

It was my first time here, and I wasn't disappointed! Friendly service with lovely food and coffee. A great atmosphere. I highly recommend this place and will be back!

Probably the best burger I've had in New Zealand. The pattie was beautiful and moist with grey flavour. Highly recommend you try

Great location though can get very busy. Good service and coffee was ok. I liked that you can order from your table via an app.

Great staff. Awesome big breakfast. Too many delicious dishes to choose from. You will get food envy seeing other meals going out while waiting for yours. But fear not, yours will be amazing.

Anja help me so much to find the local gifts I wanted to give back to my friends in Auckland. Not only she knows the products they sell, but she genuinely wanted to help and gave great ideas. Also show me a delicious vegan and GF marshmallow slice!!! Brilliant customer service! Thanks again Anja!🙏😊 Marbecks was the only shop in the cbd where I could find some local products from Otago. Can be a bit pricey but it’s worth it…

Had machiatto, flat white and chocolate cake. Super customer service, very friendly staff, coffee was to-die-for. And the chocolate was just perfect, not too sweet and very chocolatey.

Consistently good coffee (latte), friendly staff, big and comfortable cafe to catch up with friends. Food is good too but I usually come for coffee. Free water which also includes carbonated water if that's your thing.

First time visit and definitely go back for the fish, delicious 😋

We went in for breakfast on our way out of dunedin. I got fresh fruit salad and a soy hot chocolate, my fiancé got a big breakfast and a flat white. Our drinks were really good. The fruit salad was fresh and tasty, and the breakfast was really good too. It was seasoned really nicely, and the flavours went well with everything on the plate. The spicy beans and cheesy potatoes were really good. The wait time wasn't long, the staff were helpful and lovely too. All in all, we'd definitely go there again when we visit.

Really adore their little shop in connection with the cafe part of the store. Love the vibes but slightly intimidated by the business it can get. Have tried their brownie, which is a standard chocolate-y goodness (nothing spectacular) along with their dr feel good ice creams (sold on behalf of a brand) which is yummy but everything is slightly pricey for the portion and items they sell. 3.5/5

Been here sooo many times and nothing disappoints. Good cabinet desserts but the highlight is the food! The beef burger is brilliant and the pumpkin risotto is to die for! Makes me want to keep coming back!

Absolutely disgusting and appalling experience here. Was gifted a $40 voucher, but staff refused to honour it because we didn't have the receipt for the voucher!!! Staff were incredibly rude. I'd stay well away, and keep the money in your own pocket before you decide to dine here.

Definitely good food and great coffee. Recommend.

They offer a range of different creative dishes, cheeses, and baked goods.

Cashier could be a little nicer though.

Very nice place great coffee food friendly in great location close to shopping and transport. Off George Street. Wide ranging menu and great cakes.

Great coffee, cool vibe and friendly customer service. Lots of people having brunch on a weekend while I visited. They serve good quality coffee and you can taste it too, even more so when the barista is a bearded, tattooed hipster..!

Came here for a friend's birthday breakfast. Firstly, outstanding staff/service, they were very friendly and accomodating for our large group. Most of us ordered the poached eggs with house smoked salmon and mushrooms on a potato hash ($19). Serving size was massive, really generous portion of salmon! Personally I thought the potato was a little over seasoned and salty but overall a lovely dish. Others at the table also recommend the smoothies!

We used to come to Marbecks just for your amazing chips especially kumara chips. Thus, we were really looking forward to our lunch today but we were really disappointed that the standard of the food has fallen. The kumara chips were awful....soggy n oily. We thought it might've just be the oil not hot enough when they cooked it the 1st time thus sent it back to be crisp up but was given the same chips dunk in hot oil for a few seconds...again still soggy. Pity the waiter who look so embarrassed giving us the same soggy chips back. The table next to us left most of their chips uneaten too.
The lamb burger was average n the corn fritters weren't the best. We only had a few bites of each. Oh well, at least the neighbour's cat had a good feed from our leftover.
Marbecks....u need to put your standard back up and be more consistent.

I've now been here a few times recently, that should be taken as part of the review already - Marbeks is very interesting and deserves to be visited. The atmosphere is Marbeks is great, it sells interesting foods and drinks as well as kitchen ware and tech. However, I've found the coffee to be up and down, sometimes good and sometimes mediocre, though never poor. The prices sometimes edge upwards out of the range of quality but ultimately this is a pleasant experience.

One of the coolest cafes I have been to in a long time!Firstly let me tell you about the decor. It really spoke to my heart. I love all the deli items you had for sale, it truly added to the overall ambience and style of the cafe. The staff were incredibly helpful, patient, and prompt. It was absolutely lovely service. The barista staff were quick even though they were busy, and the quality of the coffee was not compromised at all. Now the food! I must admit, the food was so good that we went back the next day whilst we were still in Dunedin, and neither day was a regret. The first day I had Eggs Benedict, and it was absolutely devine! The bread was the perfect texture to eat eggs bennie with, the eggs poached perfectly, the bacon just right, and the hollindaise sauce was absoultely divine. So buttery and delicious! Definitely the nicest Eggs Benedict I've had in a long time, and one of the nicest I've ever had. The second day we wanted something different, so we ordered the French Toast. This came with house made Banana Bread, which, let me tell you, was inspired! I've never had it this way before, and now I've had I'm not sure if I can ever have regular bread again! Again, everything was cooked perfectly, and every part of the dish completed each other. I would not hesitate to eat here again, in fact I don't really see myself eating anywhere else whilst in Dunedin!

Food was nice but service was terrible. Came here for a coffee and cake with the plans if then spending time in the rest of the store looking and most likely buying. I made my order of a large flat white and a piece of cake, paid my money and I was given a number so I went and found a table and sat down. I ensured my number was in view and began to wait. I was quite happy to wait as I know coffee takes time to make and there were a few in the shop. Some time past and still my order didn't arrive. Then I noticed people coming past me finding tables and shortly after there order arrived. "Excuse me" I said to the waitress as she returned past me "when is my order coming" and pointed to my number " what did you order,"a piece of cake and a flat white" I forgot to mention it was a large flat white as I thought they would still have a record of the order relating to the number I had on the table. But alas they didn't as the waitress returned to ask which cake and when my coffee arrived it was not a large. An insincere apology was given when my cake was plonked down, no stopping to add comments of warmth or take any interest in me. So very quickly I consumed my order and left, I did not look at the rest of the shop as first planned and when I do go back I shall not be stopping for coffee it cake.

Came to marbecks today for lunch. What an amazing array of deli items, condiments and international fare. We ordered a quiche from the cabinet and the kumera fries. I enquired about any sugar free options for sodas however they did not have any however the girl behind the counter did offer a smoothie alternative. We were served quickly and the fries and aoli were beautiful cooked perfectly however the quiche was lacking a lot of flavour it would of been nice for it to be served with a relish and also maybe one of the beautiful cheeses they sell cod of been put in the quiche to add more flavour.
Over all though a good experience.

We have just come home after a week in Dunedin. Marbecks would have the best coffee we ever tasted - definitely the best in Dunedin!! As for the scones... well - they were out of this world. An amazing cafe and I will be recommending this. Well done!
