⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yummy platters - excellent service. Very generous servings - we’ll definitely be back. Thanks team Alto. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Got the creamy mushrooms (top, $21.50) and the big breakfast (bottom, $24.50). Super delicious meals everything spot on. Also was fairly quick to be made which was awesome Only comment is cooked tomato's would have been nice but understandable leaving them out when not in season or expensive. Would definitely come to this place again.

Great service. Friendly staff. Good coffee. Cheese scones needed to be more "crispy"..... but would visit again. Dined in and would again, ideally situated in the shopping precinct in Mornington.

Easily the best coffee in Dunedin. The staff are super friendly. The atmosphere is lovely with its big north facing windows. I had a soup which was delicious and the portions were large.

Great service, they were really friendly. And the steak burger was really yummy. I didn't leave here hungry

Came for breakfast with my husband to try somewhere new. Couldn't fault anything I had. We have a new go to breakfast place now!!!

We were visiting family in Dunedin. We went to Altos for a later in the morning breakfast. Our granddaughters were with us. We had a wonderful experience and were so pleased with the food and service. Great Eggs Benedict, excellent coffee and the kid’s offerings were a big hit!! Please got to Altos if you are in Dunedin, especially if you live there. Don’t miss out on a wonderful breakfast experience.

The sun was beaming in at Alto this morning. The place was beautifully presented and a soft smell of coffee in the air. I was pleased to find a fantastic breakfast menu, really helpful staff and enough space not to be involved in another tables conversations. The kids menu is pretty standard but to be fair it was a winner and the $5 kids meal on a Sunday was a smart way of getting me in the door (as a mum). I had the most forfilling creamy mushrooms on flavourful ciabatta with streaky bacon to tie for! My coffee was as superb as the service. The cabinet food was a great range of sweet and savoury and any place who sells a stuffed spud has my tick. Well done Alto. Pat your staff on the back.

Had chicken salad and calamari salad - both said best salad we have had as both were beautiful with good portion size - freshness and variety of salad items. Our first visit and won’t be the last. Excellent service on what was as busy Saturday

Haven't been here for quite a while. Well, the food was excellent 👌 and we will be back again regularly 😀

I had the Veggie Breakfast yesterday. I need to say it was the most delicious tasty breakfast I can ever remember having. Honestly. Everything about it - tomatoes, avocado, best ever hash brown, egg... Still thinking about it! Alto's always been good. But this was heaven! Thank you!

These guys nailed it!
Food 5/5
Service 5/5
Coffee 5/5

If you love cheese rolls or never had one then this is the place to go. They make one of the best cheese rolls I’ve ever had. Their savoury pinwheels are delicious and perfectly made. Two South Island delicacies made to perfection.
Alto Cafe was recommended to me by a customer for a meeting and it turned out to be a great spot to get some work done while having a cuppa and feed.
Will definitely be back next time I’m in Dunedin.

Having been back a second time I can confirm the ratings above. This time I spent a couple of hours there working and enjoying their coffees. The Alto Stack was a yummy brunch and of course I had the Southern Sushi roll again.

They are beautifully baked and liberally filled with a date jam. Great coffee too. The place is very clean and plenty of parking nearby.........................

Great little cafe. Food here was nothing short of great. The Portobello mushrooms are a favourite a long with their version of a chocolate brownie. The beetroot burger was excellent.

The coffee was horrible it was so bitter. The bacon and egg toast I had (I can't remember what it was called) was expensive and average, too much tomato chutney which tasted like the super cheap chutney you can buy from supermarket. Service unfriendly overall. Disappointing because it'd be nice to have a go-to in Mornington, I might try Tasse.

Coffee and food for 3. Great presentation of food and first impressions were good. Usually really good here, sorry not any longer. No pricing or description on food or drinks. 2 of the 3 coffees un-drinkable and left. Dry and tasteless food. Not returning

Just awful, Bitter coffee, our eggs Benedict were overcooked with minimal Hollindaise, the eggs were hard. My slice tasted stale and to top it off the service was really rude. Coffee was burnt. Come on, does it hurt to smile?. Looking at the reviews below, its a common theme.

I went to Alto on sat with friends and wont be coming back as the coffee was burnt and the carrot muffins were stale the girl serving wasn't very nice , and putting sandwiches out from the day before is a no no, Shame your standards have dropped, we all used to love going there but not any more , and cleaning the bloody fish bowl out where you wash your dishes isn't very hygienic, I work in the food business so wasn't impressed.

Karen Bell

Went to the Alto today for a coffee and cake with my friends . The Alto has been a meeting spot for me and my friends for a number of years . Somehow we found the place has changed . The person serving was most unfriendly . I usually buy a carrot cake with my coffee and the carrot cake did look fresh but one bite told me that the topping may have been replaced with fresh topping as the carrot cake was very stale . I left most of it . The coffee had a distinct burned taste . We left the Alto disappointed . I guess we will have to find another place the meet as we will not go back to the Alto .
Eve

Beetroot salad with caramel walnuts and feta was one of the best dishes I've ever had. A bit of a wait but well worth it. Friendly and very clean :)

Ate here a few weeks ago with a friend, decided to pop in for a late lunch. I have to say the food was rather subpar especially for what we were charged, bacon was cold and the egg was well and truly over cooked. And the service was appalling, we were served by a young blonde woman who looked like if she cracked a smile she would have died.

Very disappointed and will not be returning.

I have never heard a negative story about Alto from my friends or family. I have never been treated with such disdain from a cafe. I don't expect to be treated like family but I was treated like I didn't belong there and my patronage wasn't good enough. I will try them again and hope that they have taken heed of the advice on many of these sites. It must be noted the coffee was consistently good across my visits.

Have eaten here a few times before however today will be our last visit. Attended with a group of 6 people and staff service was just horrible. The "we should be so lucky" attitude from he staff was really bad.

We asked if we could have more water and the response was "what more water, there's some on that table there!"

No thanks. We wont be back..

If you don't like your job you should leave..

This cafe is a regular on our circuit! The food is always pretty good and the service is fine, although there is some room for improvement there. Their flat bread with dips is particularly good value for money, and their corn fritters with pesto and relish are a firm favourite. In addition to the standard menu, they have a specials board with some interesting options - in our last visit I tried the arancini, which were lovely, but the side salad and slice of bread they were served with seemed like a bit of an after thought, or perhaps just a way to fill up the plate! All and all, one of Dunedin's better cafes, and a place you can always rely on.

It's a nice and sunny location, but I've never really been blown away by the food, coffee or service there.

Lunched here again today, however I feel the food has gone downhill, They never change the menu and the service is really sub par - come on ladies, does it hurt to crack a smile?. Decor is starting to look shabby as well.

My daughter and I had brunch at Alto today, busy place and we didn't book. We arrived at 12 and the lovely young lady let us have a table that was booked for 1pm. Very friendly staff. Cabinet food was plentiful.

We ordered off the menu, which was well priced and had a great selection. We had the mothers day special, raspberry pancakes. These were so yummy! Light & fluffy. It was also nice to see a healthier option of pancakes served with natural yoghurt and maple syrup served on the side, which was delicious and left us able to put on how much we liked :). We also had the home made muesli which came with honey, fresh fruit salad and yoghurt. Fantastic, all the flavours went together beautifully and it was so fresh and crunchy- best muesli I've had!!!

We both highly recommend this Cafe! It also features in this years entertainment book which was a added bonus! Alto - keep up the great work!

A friend and I have lunch here often and we have never been disappointed, the foods great and the service is lovely, very friendly and welcoming, definitely recommend it.

Had a fabulous time at Alto. (did have great company also!) as part off a small group of ladies that regularly meet up for lunch at a different place each time, this was great. relaxed atmosphere, even though they were very busy, professional service, and delicious food! we had a platter designed for 2-3 people and it was enough for 5 of us. This is the sort of place I would take out of town visitors to, rather than somewhere in town, and there's no hassle with parking. Highly recommend.

Alto is the quintessential 'local' suburban cafe, ticking all the boxes for a fantastic brunch experience; a varied menu with all the menu classics, very well-presented, great, no-fuss service, family-friendly, well-made coffee, and a laid-back ambiance that's perfect for a quiet spot in the morning sun.

This is a professional operation that puts many of the noted city cafes to shame.
