Went for the French fries. Saw all the reviews about how amazing they are and had to check for myself. The reviews did not disappoint. Ordered way too much but did not regret it one bit. Great price as well.

Always great, they never disappoint. By far the best fish and chips shop near the student quarter. Absolutely recommended for everyone to visit if you are looking for some fish and chips. I love their big bags of hot chips great move really awesome

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. the chips were absolutely excellent, some of the best i've ever had. My partner got battered hoki and it was delicious. also very reasonably priced. staff were very friendly.

We travel 4 km out of way to get our fries here as the oil used is always good quality. I'm very diligent about avoiding plastic packaging. I'm always accommodated in my request for paper wrapping and using my cloth reusable bag.

The owner was very friendly and fish n chips were not greasy at all!! It was so good!

Best chips in Dunedin and they do GF fish.

Great fish n chip place.

Really good fish and chips. Not too greasy and the snapper was delicious. Gets pretty busy during student semesters, not much room to dine but fish and chips are best eaten outdoors anyway.

Really awesome place for chips. They offer shoestring and crinkle in a variety of sizes and are always quick. While they're a fish and chips store, they offer a lot more than just those two items.

Best kumara fries I tried in New Zealand! Awesome - a must take if you are here. Veggie burger and regular fries on the other hand were nothing special. Very friendly and nice team working on meals.

One of the best takeaways in Dunedin! Their blue cod and shoestring chips is simply to die for! The batter on the fish is crisp and light, the fish tastes amazing and they add that finishing touch by topping it off with a little lemon pepper. The chips are cooked perfectly and crisp but still nice and fluffy inside. They have a decent menu with gluten free and dairy free options available as well as burgers. Behind the counter is a selection of chilled drinks as well as a few lollies and treats if you can't quite wait for your meal to be cooked.

Great place to buy lots of takeaways from. The service is good, and because it is often packed, you may wait ~10 mins for your order. Don't have high expectations here, afterall it is a takeaway shop (nothing fancy); however, for a takeaway shop it is clean, fast and cheap - 3 great reasons people go for a feed. They also have lunch deals for some of their burgers. This shop has fed me through exams countless times.

Fish is fresh and very tender.

The best, THE BEST! Chips in town. Crinkle cut, fatties, shoestring, a Mix even! My fave is their garlic salt seasoning. OMG! Addictive, if you're a chip fiend like me. They have been consistent since I was a little kid and my eyes still light up when I see, hear of, go to, The Flying Squid.
In my opinion this place is iconic.

Fish were dry, we had snapper and dory. chip were just regular. We had oysters as well, they werent fresh. We were shocked :(<br/>My friends and I came to this place because we saw the reviews.
The Scarfoodie
The best kumura chips ever. Must try. Shoestring and crinkle cuts are standard and their burgers are decent (only for the lunch promo), otherwise nothing spectacular, just your standard fish and chip shop. They have a pretty diverse menu, and most of the fish, fried desserts and things are pretty standard, you know that typical fried quality food-nothing special, but definitely a good student go to when you’re craving!

This humble Takeaway in Dunedins student area has featured in NZ Herald as one of the countries top takeaways. My experience has proven otherwise.<br/><br/>We were served by a gentleman who must've been new as he didn't understand exactly what we were ordering and had to call over the cook for advice.<br/><br/>I ordered deep fried snapper with a hotdog and chips. The pricing of the chips is more expensive than most takeaways but I like how you have the options of curly fries or shoestrings.<br/><br/>My hotdog was not good in the slightest. It was a battered frankfurter which was very rubbery and lacked sauce. The batter was a bit doughy which indicated it wasn't cooked for long enough.<br/><br/>The snapper was cooked well but didn't have much flavour overall. I felt like I was eating cardboard.<br/><br/>So the chips at The Flying Squid are tasty but they aren't sufficient enough to save the rest of the menu. I don't forsee myself returning here.

Went for a late lunch all of our food was awesome crispy and not oily. We ordered fish and chips and burgers. All of our food was hot and tasted great.

It's become a once-a-week regular for us after finishing cleaning work on Campus. Relocating to Dunedin in August 2013 we'd tried everything in Andy Bay/South Dunedin and it wasn't until my husband got a job at Polytech in March 2014 that he discovered Flying Squid. Great value and taste - even Blue Cod and Snapper are an affordable treat. The batter used for the fish is light and always crispy. <br/>Sorry guys, we can't comment on other menu items, because we're not tired of the Fish and Chips yet. <br/>I've generally found the staff polite and helpful and unlike many takeaway joints, they smile :-).<br/><br/>just now · report · edit · Like · delete

A student institution smack in the middle of scarfie-town. Not the flashiest fish-and-chips shop in town, but its neon sign and bright-red walls do have a certain charm to them. Becoming a regular can't be good for your cholesterol levels or your waistline, but a piping hot piece of fish and a bag of salty shoestring fries is scarfie comfort food during the cold gloomy Dunedin winters.

Best Take away shop in the City! Good quality Food and nice people plus they have a wide verity of drinks and its the cheapest fish and chip shop I've ever been to but it has the best quality food! I would definitely go there again For there great quality fish or there amazing chips If your looking for fast food anywhere go to the flying squid because there stuff is great!

Lovely shoestring fries, good sprinkling of salt and/or chicken salt. However, the place itself is very small and gets crowded sometimes, and the customer service from the cashier is terrible every single time.

Piece of fish? More like a piece of minced up fish guts. You know that horrible cheap fish you get from the frozen section at the supermarket? It was worse!! I always got the famous squiddys shoestring fries and they are good but I thought I would branch out for a fish a hot dog and fatty chips. It was disgusting!!! I will never go there again.

Just one suggestion to make excellent. that numbers are used for orders just to limit confusion!

You can't seem to go wrong with the Flying Squid, or "Squiddies" as it is known to locals. For many years it has won the annual Critic (Otagon University's Student Association magazine) Fish and Chip review, which reviews local fish and chip places for their value, and taste, of their cuisine.<br/>I have been there a few times myself, and do agree that both the amount, and the taste especially, of what I am getting for my money to be very worthwhile.<br/>Thank you Squiddies for always being their for the students!
