Review Mexico - Ellerslie

Benedict Uy
We came by for lunch. It wasn't busy but we did book beforehand just in case. The restaurant seems to be split with the front half being more like a bar whereas the back area is more like a restaurant. The back area also had interesting pictures covering the wall. The paper menus were on the cutlery holder and there was a separate drink and food menu, We opted to get the set menu as it was easier but did end up grabbing an extra portion of fried chicken and a ceviche. We also grabbed the standard and the black plum margarita carafes. The original margarita was actually really good. The set came with guacamole and chips, the fried chicken, elotes, quesadilla, a taco and churros. The fried chicken was quite nice as were the elotes, the corn ribs. The tacos were also good and each person got to pick their own flavour. I found the quesadillas to be on the dry side. The churros were nice with the dulce de leche. It was a tasty and filling meal.

This Mexico location is awesome and I love the fit out which gives it a really cool feel. The menu is great with a variety of options and it’s really reasonably priced. Two of us had a hearty lunch for $46 and it hit all the right notes! Also a shoutout to our lovely server who was so nice and helpful. Thanks guys! Hamish Dorrington Kakapo Business Sales

Great place to eat and hang out. Fun vibe for a group gathering. The food is amazing. We had the pork belly tostadas and churros for dessert!

I had an incredible dining experience at this restaurant. The food is simply amazing, especially if you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine. It’s a must-try for anyone who enjoys bold and flavorful dishes. The cocktails were equally impressive, offering a refreshing complement to the delicious food. What truly stood out was the excellent service. The staff was attentive and made the entire dining experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable meal.

Love this place. Friendly staff, great chef's, delicious kai and amazing drink selection. Love asking staff to surprise me with a drink. Have yet to come across one I haven't liked. Been numerous times and will carry on returning.

I live closeby for a year, but never walked in. It's my first encounter of Mexician food. I love it! The exotic decoration, interesting ways of cooking but devilishly delicious. My pork belly tace was not the crispy type expected, but the cubes and sides make a little feast. I love the fried chicken, albeit not at my level of hotness. The guacamole and totopus are equally lovely. The ambulance is kid-, family- and group- friendly, Almost full at 1pm Sunday. Waiters are always busy, Plenty of parking diagonally across. Since it is a cushioned cultural shock, I google why Mexicans like skulls and skeletons, and like the answer: "they are gentle reminders that life is temporary, and death is certain."

My mate and I arrived to lunch hungry which was perfect for Mexico! The highlight was the pork belly taco followed by the lamb quesadilla. I enjoyed everything I ate and will return.

I love this place, hands down favorite Mexican restaurant in Auckland. I have only had one concern, when they get busy they seems to turn off the online order option and it won't even display why can't you order online. Obviously since they are busy its hard to get them on phone to order as well. So you will then have to go to the restaurant, place the order and wait for 20 mins. Would have been better to at least display on the website to say we are not taking online order currently or something.

We attended a margarita master class here with a big team. The class was very entertaining and well organized. Cocktails and finger food were great woth a nice variety.

It’s a great place for a birthday party. Food is typical tapas style, fast as expected. Truth is, food is a bit fancy and very small portions. Suggestion, even if just quality food ingredients with less garnishing, basic preparations then it would be more authentic and satisfying

The stuff is amazing, the food is tasty and presentation is top notch for me, the drinks....oh my god, we had something new and something old, sweet seduction - nice sweetness ,strong banana flavour ; mojito - not sweet all, fresh mint, lemon instead of lime (I'm fine with that) ; the red drink ( i dont remember the exact name for it) ,something i never tried before, and had rosemary in it and plum, very interesting flavour - the bartender made them all strong and we enjoyed it very much! The food tasted like it was made with love. You can taste that the chef put little bit of his soul into food and that's why I definitely will come back.

Mexico. A star in the Mexican food market. What a great experience. The service is good. The food is great. The drink options are plentiful. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing. I love all the artwork on the walls, always something cool to look at. Try the fried chicken and you'll order it for every visit like I do. I must say I love the crispy soft-shell crab taco too. A great selection of margaritas to choose from but also you can't go wrong with a Corona. If you like corn then you'll love the esquites. I guess my only complaint would be that it seems that every time I visit they are out of guacamole, whether it is poor planning or it's so good they run out, either way it's still disappointing. Over all, highly recommended...

Excellent food. The kitchen staff worked really hard and seemed to have things under control. One of the staff members, a young lady, was very friendly and nice. I assumed they were shortstaffed and under stress, but it was a bit frustrating to see someone pass in front of our food 6 or 7 times as it was waiting in the pass. After 10 minutes, I got up and asked the chef if it was ours and, when she confirmed, I picked it up. Nothing to blame to the kitchen staff, who seemed desperate for someone to take the food out. The food is great so I hope it was just a bad day and we get it better next time.

Went there as a large group and they catered for us very well. Got the group option with one taco flavour you could choose. The pork belly taco was actually really good but was slightly disappointed when you only get one. However I was not disappointed when more side dishes were bought up and we got to try a very wide range of their menu. Are very well and was a happy gal

Recently visited Mexico Ellerslie for a pre-Christmas work event, and it was a fantastic experience. The event was seamlessly organized by Ebony, who handled our booking with great efficiency. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The dinner was delightful, but the real standout was the Margarita masterclass, where everyone learned to make various types of margaritas – a fun and engaging activity. I highly recommend Mexico Ellerslie for group events. A big thank you to Ebony, her team, and the Chef for making our evening memorable :)

Yummy. Food was great, and one particular waiter was great, however the only issue was that the food came out at bad times, etc one person waiting 20 mins after everyone had finished for her food... Still great!

Absolutely loved the xocolate mole and chicken quesadillas I ordered and would definitely come back to try the other quesadillas and food! The ruby grapefruit drink I had was also very yummy.

Ordered takeout from them and it was all ready within 15 min! Super impressed. Loved the fried chicken - seasoned super well with a good kick.

Staff/service: 3/5<br/>Venue: 4/5<br/>Price/portion: 2.5/5<br/><br/>This visit was not my first visit to a Mexico outlet but is was my first visit to the Ellerslie outlet. The service was slow, the gap between our first dish and last dish had over 45min difference. Even tables that came after us had all their orders served and left.<br/><br/>The chicken wings in guajillo abodo was a real disappointment. It was so lack of flavour and blend, one of the worse tasting dish I had from a Mexico outlet. We had to asked for some hot sauce to not waste the food.<br/><br/>Would not visit this outlet in Ellerslie anymore and do hope that the others outlet wouldn’t get to that stage too.<br/><br/>Join Zomato Gold and get 1+1 on food or 2+2 on drinks. Fried chicken is amazing and the staff is very sweet and friendly. Sometimes the service can be little slow but rest is great!

Enjoyed a meal here with friends, first time trying the new summer menu.<br/><br/>If you’re a mushroom fan the crumbed mushrooms are a must have - so juicy and delicious.<br/><br/>The five spiced duck taco was also a flavour sensation. We also tried the new avocado taco which was surprisingly tasty. <br/><br/>Three of us had the crispy pork burger which was nice but the flavours in the sauce overpowered the pork flavour which let it down.<br/><br/>As always the fried chicken and patatas bravas were crowd pleasers as were the margaritas, love the new flavours - cucumber and lychee, as well as, strawberry and guava.

Four of came here for dinner and as usual, Mexico did not disappoint! Some people tell me that Mexico is too mainstream but I cannot say no to a taco from here! <br/>We ordered the five spiced duck leg taco, esquites, Mexico fried chicken, the slow cooked lamb shoulder quesadilla and three taco Tuesday specials (a fried chicken or fried cauliflower taco with a margarita for $14) - everyone in our group got the fried chicken 🍗 <br/><br/>The lamb quesadilla was out of this world, we all loved it and my duck taco was amazing - they did not skimp on the duck either! If you want to try I’d recommend heading in ASAP, Mexico changes their menu seasonally and I don’t remember seeing a duck taco on the menu ever before! <br/><br/>Try one of the margaritas or one of the sugar free sofas, I didn’t have one this time but they never disappoint.<br/><br/>My only complaint is that one of the staff members seemed so bored and we could hardly hear her. We also asked for extra tortillas with our esquitas (I ask for this each time and it’s never an issue, I just pay an extra charge), our server said he would ask but never got back to us and we did not get the extra tortilla :(

I have been here a few times 😬 for lunch and dinner! Each time the fried chicken has been a must order, you won't be disappointed.<br/><br/>The lunch menu is really good value for money, I got the degustation option which gives you a little taste of nearly everything for only $20! 😍<br/><br/>Their new menu (summer 2019) is pretty awesome.<br/>The croquetas were yummy and light, a nice kick start to the evening. The patatas de maiz were pretty good but I personally liked the croquetas better.<br/>The lamb taco with pomegranate seeds is so delicious. The avocado taco was surprisingly spicy/hot considering the mild chilli rating on the menu. The chicken taco was pretty yummy too but I would rate the lamb over the chicken anyday. The only disappointing tacos would have to be the fish taco, when I ordered mine the fish seemed to be kind of tough so maybe a tad overcooked and secondly the duck taco it seemed to have minimal flavor apart from the duck itself.<br/>I need to come back and try the pork belly!<br/><br/>Overall definitely recommend and definitely will be back 🥰

The drinks were so good. The food was amazing and the staff were very friendly and very patient with us. Everything was good
Carina Chang
overpriced food and bad taste, crowded and hard to find a table during dinner time. the FC was good, prawn taco was the worst, batter was soggy. and salad was tiny portion and too many mayo.
Hiro
Extremely friendly staff. Great atmosphere. Group set Menu was generous and delicious. Best fried chicken!

Cool ambience. Friendly staff. Tasty food. Brilliant cocktail

The food here is good. Nothing to complain about. It SHOULD NOT be called Mexico. It is insulting to Mexican food. Nothing served here is actual Mexican food. If you’re looking for authentic Mexican this is NOT the place to go.

Went there last weekend for a friend's graduation dinner.<br/>The staff were polite but wasnt very impressed the quantity of food/drink for the price we paid.<br/><br/>We were around 12 of us. But everyone ordered individually.<br/><br/>Tried the cocktails, the fried chicken and the pork carne asada and the chicken quesadillas.<br/>Must say the pork dish was really dry and had to add various hot sauces to it to get the flavour right ❌<br/><br/>The other dishes were ok, but nothing great!<br/><br/>Would be good if they dropped their prices a bit, that way they would definitely get more clientele.<br/><br/>The total for the 12 of us was just over $450. But in saying that people hardly ate much. Dishes were either entrees or tapas.<br/><br/>Ambience : ⭐⭐⭐<br/>Staff : ⭐⭐⭐⭐<br/>Price : ⭐⭐<br/>Food : ⭐⭐

Love the interior of the place, the vibes was good for a cosy night. Ordered their specialty of Mexico Fried Chicken, Lamb Quesadilla, and their mango passion fruit margarita.
Lizzie
Yummy plum & cinnamon Margherita and sangria! The fried cauliflower was 10/10 as well as the esquites and fried chicken. The patata bravas was good too! The lamb quesadilla was abit plain in flavour and so were the chimichangas but the service was fast and it’s a funky place so recommend!

Delicious tacos ! We ordered a couple of tacos and the fried chicken. Our favorite was the pork taco. Really good. The drinks were nice too. Service was great too.
Munchies
Really neat how they have turned this old servo into a cool lil Mexican outlet.<br/>The food is really tasty. The soft shell tacos are nice, my picks would be either the pork belly or chicken options. Im unsure if the sizes of tacos warrant $7 price but still nice tho. The fried chicken and quesadilla is worth trying too. <br/>Sangria is always good here. <br/>Staff are always nice and friendly. Service can be a lil slow at times. <br/>Nice interior with a sort of outdoor area on one side where the gas pumps use to be and on the other is a nice indoor area with wall to wall Mexican trinkets.

Great service, nice ambience. <br/><br/>The food, oh my!!! Was amazing!!! <br/>✨ the pork belly was definitely worth the wait and the chicken quesadilla was lovely!! 😋😋<br/><br/>Will be back to try out other item on the menu 🤤<br/>
Lisa
I’ve never had a bad experience here! A personal favourite, I love the service and the drinks! The food is equally as amazing and is super flavourful. I wish they would allow takeaways for their other dishes as I would be definitely ordering a lot more!
Linda
Always a good time at Mexico ellerslie - tacos are on point! Having their app also gives you free chips each time you visit, so totally worth grabbing a bunch of friends to hang out for good yarns and a good night out 🔥

Life-changing fried chicken! If you haven't yet, order them and try them with all the sauces! The crunchy chickpea salad was also really yummy and went so well with the chicken! Friendly service. It can get noisy in the bar area so if you want to talk, reserve the tables close to the entrance.
#fatlyfe
This is my favourite Mexico!!! The waiter really made the night!! He was hilarious 😂 ordered the special which was the chicken nibbles as well as the guacamole and chips! The guac is always delicious it had some chillies in it which have it a bit of a kick. LOVED IT! The chicken nibbles were perfectly cooked charred on the outside and soft n juicy on the inside, I just didn’t like the queso sauce but that’s personal preference. All in all always a great experience when I come here

The best Mexico in my experience. Food is always amazing, fresh and on this recent visit it was perfect. The free Totopos were hot, crispy, seasoned well and we received a small bowl each. The Margiritas were amazing. Seriously everything was wow. The mexico fried chicken I received was soo goood and I felt like I got more than I get at Sylvia. The one unfortunate thing was they were understaffed on this occasion last Saturday afternoon so I’m unable to gift the 5th star even though the guy serving us did his best - he seemed to be the only one serving customers and making drinks. At one point our meals were ready but he was busy making another tables margiritas so we waited 5 minutes while I could see our food ready for service but unable to reach us.

It was great diner place:) I love Mexico food:) taco was great but small portion so one is not enough :) very busy restaurant. Staff were kind and nice:)

Mexico is one of our go to places to catch up with friends. All food is made to order, fresh and perfect for sharing. Would recommend to match food with one of their carafe drinks. They make really crispy and moist chicken, 1 order will not be enough 🙂🙃

I ordered the guacamole and jackfruit quesadilla, which was absolutely delicious and tasty. There is such a nice atmosphere at this branch with great light coming through. Staff are very efficient and friendly. Art work is astonishing - so many lovely pieces to froth over!

Coffee marinated beef cheek with shaved parnip and fennel! Oh yeah...to die for! Best dish we have had for a while. Highly recommended. Service has improved lately too. Well done guys.

Pretty good place for friday night drinks. There’s a bit of a wait especially during busy dinner rush but the staff are pretty chill and friendly and get to us in time. We really enjoyed the mango and passionfruit margaritas and had an almost endless amount of snacking. Highly recommend the mexico fried chicken (perfectly cooked chicken and yum sauce), spiced duck leg taco (amazing flavours!) and esquites (hard to pronounce but so yum to eat-could do with an extra tortilla tbh). Also had the chicken quesadillas and mushroom quesadillas but they were both just okay for me. Would come back just for the chicken and tacos for sure (could eat more of those easy).
Mahindaciska
The dinner service is way much better than the lunch service. We got 1 tacos and 2 quesadilla. The sangrias is my favourite dish. Tacos,  is similar tquesadilla,  nice attitude from the service. Price is hit the spot. Strongly recommend.

I'm don't know how others choose the rating - but for me a 3 is GOOD - well above average. <br/><br/>The difference to get to a 4 , there may be some things (in my opinion) to be addressed, or there was some form of issue. <br/><br/>To get a 5 - not absolute perfection in all aspects - but as close as you can humanly get to it.<br/><br/>So my partner and I having recently moved to the area - felt like a Margarita ( or 2 ) and with the sudden arrival of a friend headed to Mexico to try it out.<br/><br/>A lovely welcome on our arrival - it was reasonably busy - lots of energy - exciting.<br/>Our 'waiter' ( sorry I'm old fashioned, I had been a waiter a loooong time ago darlings and 'server' is an Americanism, without taste or status and a good waiter can make or break the meal) - ahem ... our waiter explained the menu, the specials and importantly the drinks.<br/><br/>We  each selected a carafe of Margarita original - delicious!<br/><br/>Snacked on the Guacamole - with fresh made tortilla chips - mmmmm ... yum!<br/>We ordered one each of the soft shell Taco's .... now you could just order a few of these for a main - I think there were 6 to choose from - the idea was for each of us to share - didn't work nobody wanted to share - so dammit I missed out on the Duck - but I did have a great prawn taco and an equally great Green Bean taco.<br/><br/>Time for another carafe!<br/><br/>Next ceviche and a quesadilla - both are simple dishes - but done GOOD.<br/>The ceviche was wonderful, fresh and balanced - the quesadilla flavourful and satisfying.<br/><br/>Not much room left for much else, so we shared an order of Churros - with a dark chocolate ganache - Oh yeah baby, a great way to finish.<br/><br/>An excellent evening - but slightly marred when we went to pay and the bill presented was similar but with a few more things we hadn't ordered. <br/>Look mistakes happen ( I made one myself once), and they may have had past issues with customers trying to B.S a bill or doing a runner. However I felt a little like we weren't totally believed - it was resolved - the additional items removed once another employee arrived at the check out. The lighting at the checkout to read the bill is poor, but I guess they don't want to detract from the ambience. However this did mar the end of the evening slightly. <br/>They would have got a 4.<br/><br/>But we will be back - to give them that opportunity - try a different Margarita and I for one want to sample that duck taco.. :)<br/><br/>It is a great restaurant, with a fun lively atmosphere - Enjoy.

Fast and friendly service. Tried the potats bravas, duck taco which is awesome abd the classic fried chicken. Missed the specials board this time which had so e good looking options a squid dish and a lamb taco. Might have to go back?
Sarah
My favourite of all the Mexico outlets. Warm inside, great food, fast service. Will definitely be back and make sure I save room for dessert. Lots of gluten free options
Arlette Goldsbury
Mostly only come here for the cold brew coffee (which is incredible) the lamb tacos are amazing. The customer service is a little iffy, sometimes can take a while for a waitress to come over and take our order, the specials board is incredibly hard to read
Pick&Mix
As vegetarians we regularly eat here because there are a number of options for our family but was in here Saturday and the portion sizes have gone down considerably. Polenta chips which used to be a bit like a door stop are now like a finger and the corn smoked sharing plate has less corn on it. Seems like they’re cutting back but I suppose it beats raising prices. It does then make for a slightly more expensive meal as you have to order more than you used to. They could also do with putting some light in their ladies bathroom. It really was like attempting a night run is someone else’s house. Couldn’t tell you if it was clean, the light bulb didn’t give enough light to see anything.
Tia Lindbom
I’m not the biggest fan of Mexican food but this restaurant changed my view on it. The food was delicious and I can’t wait to go back again!

Atmosphere - tick<br/>Food quality - tick<br/>Taste - tick<br/>Decor - tick, a great formula<br/>Staff - tick, awesome<br/><br/>Coffee - cross, only cold drip available<br/><br/>The Mexico equation is a good one, go for the polenta chips, tacos, beef cheek...actually just go and try everything!<br/><br/>Oh and there are some pretty creative Margaritas too!
Joanne Chiang
I find the lunch service better than the dinner service. We come here every now and then for lunch. I often get 2 tacos or 1 quesadilla. The sangrias here always hit the spot for me. Their tacos, always good and consistent however i cannot say the same to the quesadilla.
888bing888
Excellent customer service, great ambiance and good food. We tried the children’s chicken and cheese quesadilla, churros, cheesecake, Mexico fried chicken, beef cheek and chicken in mole Amarillo but it was the fried chicken that stood out as it was crunchy and well-seasoned. Will definitely go back.
Linlin
Love coming to Mexico! The service has always been so warm and inviting. We ordered the chicken quesadilla, fried chicken and lamb taco. Tasted so good!! Service is always quick.
Bridgette Armstrong
Loved this place! Staff are friendly and provide great suggestions of food to try. Food is great, especially the fried chicken 👌🏻 cocktail and sangria also on point!
DC
An interesting place, used to be a great local Mex joint but seems to have changed their menus with smaller portions which I found too pricey. Sunday’s is usually a good time to go they have specials on, and young kids can eat one kids main free.
Marina :)
Food: amazing as usual from Mexico, we had the special fried cauliflower things which were SOO good I could’ve smashed like 5 bowls of them. Vege options are great too which is nice. The portion of chimichangas was a bit small but it’s okay because they were yum.<br/><br/>Bev: I had the cold brew which was stellar and I would buy it again and again! <br/><br/>Service: great, we were immediately seated and offered menus. Speedy cooking times as well. No problems with splitting the bill too which is nice for poor friend groups <br/><br/>I’ve never been to the ellerslie branch and it didn’t disappoint!!!
Keith Eades
It was my first time in here, there were quite a few dishes to choose from. We ended up having Spice Duck Leg, Eggplant, Xocolate Mole Beef, Soft Shell Tacos, and Mexico Fried Chicken. <br/><br/>We were all suitable full afterwards, It's not the cheapest food joint in town, but it's worth the extra cost, especially the "Mexico Fried Chicken"
Tony Ma
Great selection of tacos. <br/><br/>I love the duck and fish tacos, they are currently my favorite. <br/><br/>$7 for one taco ain’t cheap. But it’s worth it if you haven’t tried. <br/><br/>Very Mexican layout. Quite fun and enjoyable. <br/><br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/>Food quantity: 4/5<br/>Presentation: 4/5<br/>Environment: 4/5<br/><br/>Price per person: $30-$40

Great setting and service. Pork belly came out after than others in my group, but the waitress did explain that would happen. Good range of beers and other drinks. Inconsistent value for money though...my pork belly seemed excellent value, but slaw and fried chicken was small for the price. All tasted lovely though.
Karen Arklie
Good food. We ordered the fried chicken (it’s a small portion) quesadilla cochinita pibil (awesome especially the salsa that comes with it) and the chickpea patatas (nice). Service was not constant - we had Tom who was very sweet but then later we had someone very rude clear our table ( Mohawk like hair)
Annie Wilson
I love Mexico! I use to goto this restaurant once a week but now am going to Sylvia Park as it's closer. But everytime I goto this place their service is great and the atmosphere is very sophisticated at night!
Lana
Love all the Mexico restaurants! Love the set up, staff, changing menu and the food! The tacos are always tasty and you can get a meal for two under $100 with a couple drinks and be full! So good!!
Fred Ade
If you want good, cheap Mexican this is the place. Staff are generally welcoming and attentive, however beware of the learners. Also if you arrive after 8:45pm in the week be prepared for a reprimand before you have been seated! One or two mismatched staff can have a negative impact on cash flow.
Monique Ohlson
Definitely recommend you go and eat here!! Food is just top notch and comes out within a really good time and all hot! Tastes all fantastic and so much flavour! The services was even better!! If there was ever a better dude to have then this guy would be it! Such great service and knows how to sell a great drink. Thanks guys we will be back
Itskazz978
Waited for a long time, bad service and bad customer service. Really didn’t enjoy my time, waited 50min for a meal and multiple mess ups during the night.<br/>
Marie
Tasty food , quick service, however it needs a good dust & clean very dirty interior. Much better to go at night when the dust and genuine grime is hidden by the moody lightning.
Preeti Kaur
This is one of my most fav places to crash for amazing food! Been here plenty of times, the Ellersie branch has great seating both in the front and back...so if you're after a lunch time sunny vibe or a dinner setting, it'll cater for it all. The service is always great, never had any issues. Staff are always very helpful at suggesting things on menu updates, or keeping your drinks topped up. The fried chicken and guacamole is a must! Soft tacos are always a treat, and to wash it all down their cold coffee brew is the best!
Beccs
Great local Mexican been here a few times now however when we visited tonight for dinner we found their portions very small for the price we paid & limited selection. Sadly would not return in a hurry!
Karen
I've been to the various outlets of Mexico and they've always had good food in a lively environment. I decided to write this review after visiting the Ellerslie branch last night to give credit to the awesome staff there. <br/><br/>My friend and I visited around 7:30 on a Thursday evening and it was quite packed. We were seated fairly promptly and placed our orders. About 10 minutes later, our waitress came to tell us they were sorry that they were out of the ribs that we ordered. We proceeded to order the prawns instead. In the meantime we got our other food and drinks. Another 10 minutes went by and the waitress came back to tell us that the prawns were out too, and they were very very sorry. We went on to order the fried chicken instead. Soon after we were finally served with the fried chicken, and a waiter came by to bring us an extra plate of fried chicken as an apology for being out of our original orders twice. We were pleased with their apology and attempts to make amends. <br/><br/>When we came to pay, the waitress apologised again and offered to make our drinks free. I think they went beyond what was necessary to ensure that we felt valued as customers. On top of that it would have been a very busy and stressful night for them (they were almost fully occupied) and everyone had a great attitude.
Julia Louise
Food is consistently good and the margheritas are delicious! The Ellerslie outlet is more spacious and better acoustically than the Ponsonby or Britomart Mexico. Went to a hens night here recently for the Margherita making class - really good value for money and a fun night out.
Mmmfood
This place seems great if you are looking for a bar with Mexican themed snacks, but do not be fooled into thinking that this is an actual Mexican restaurant. The dishes we had were neither authentically Mexican nor anything above average. The wait staff was something else, too. The waiter that showed us to the table, did so by pointing at it with his foot. And within the span of 2 minutes another waiter put 3 items directly on top of the menu while I was looking at the menu and obviously reading it. He also recommened not to order the Quesadillas as they were basically just toasted sandwiches. Classic!
Chris Thomas
Quality of food has gone down hill, fried chicken isn't the same as it used to be and the pork tacos had crackling so hard I mistook it for bone. Gutted, because I really liked the restaurant
PK
Love the food here and the amazing magaritas..Sunday lunch service was good..Got in just before the lunch rush..Fried Chicken is our usual go to..Soft tacos..chicken and lamb both were wonderfully seasoned thpugh we added a fash of the hot sauses...Will be back ofcourse...
Emma
The food was amazing, great flavours. My table shared some things I had the chicken quesadilla and it was so good we also got the spicy chicken which they told us it is a fan favourite! The service was great and they also have a great drinks and awesome Mexican sodas!! Really recommend this restaurant and I could not find one fault!!
Rachel Hui
Love the decor, well balanced ambience. Staff are always super cheerful and helpful. Great place for groups. <br/><br/>Food is okay, consistent, you know you won't be disappointed. Food always get served faster then drinks which makes me wonder how fresh the food really is? Pre cooked then re cooked fried chicken? Umm...<br/><br/>It is a great food outlet to have close by for a casual night out when you feel like being on the margaritas!
Yusoff Kamal
Love this place ambience. Really great with plenty of seats. Didnt take much photo due to the dim lights.<br/><br/>The cocktail jug is a must have...we tried a few differebt ones and the are just delicious. <br/><br/>The food is tasty and anything chicken..in the menu is a must have!<br/><br/>The service is friendly n efficient.<br/><br/>Definitely a must go ...great sharing portion!
Neelam Chandra
Always come to Mexico for a casual night out. The ambience is a 5/5 and the service is exceptional. <br/>Food comes out super quick too. <br/>Ordered their famous Mexico fried chicken, braised beef quesadilla and the spanish chorizo & papa soft shell taco. Wasn't a fan of their braised beef quesadilla at all unfortunately :( the food here doesn't taste as good as I can remember which is such a shame :( On the other hand their sangrias are always the best..i always order a carafe on every occasion 😂
Mysticmojito
I really enjoyed the evening I spent here with a large group of friends. I arrived before everyone, and the staff were really friendly and accommodating, and they clearly deal really well with large groups of people. The table service was also pretty chilled, but attentive and accommodating. <br/><br/>The food wasn't fantastic, but it was nice. We tried a wide range of things, and used the free taco deal for signing up which was an easy process. <br/><br/>The restaurant ambience was nice- fully committed kooky decoration, which is pulled off well. <br/><br/>Margaritas were also yum.

Was so excited to try the fried chicken given the reviews and am a big fan of hot n spicy kfc but I have  to say my visit here was a big disappointment. Not only was the food less than average, the size of the meals were disappointing. A teeny bowl of fried chicken which was dry and had some chilli powder or similar sprinkled on it for $16 without sides seemed a little more like fine dining pricing without the taste or ambience. The other sides were interesting and well presented but I was still wishing for something more substantial for the price paid. And a more extensive menu would be better.

Same as all the other Mexicos. Nice food, atmosphere and serving staff. The family favourite is the Mexico fried chicken . Will definitely be back

A nice cheap restaurant to go to with friends. Reasonably priced and with some fun drinks and good music. The fried chicken and small soft shell tacos are the standouts. The menu could be more extensive. The quesadilla (chorizo and cauliflower) was disappointingly lacking in flavours. Friendly service. Overall a good place for what it is.

So I came here on a Saturday night with my partner in crime for date night. Didn't make any reservations because it wasn't required but when we got there it was busy. Busy is goooood. We got 1 pork belly taco, 1 fish taco and a set of Mexican fried chicken. First and for most if you're a fan of wicked wings from KFC than the Mexican fried chicken is a must-have. Definitely pick some of these bad boys up when you get the chance. The pork belly taco was pretty good besides the sauce which felt a little overpowering imo. The fish taco one the other hand was very yummy and I would recommend this for anyone who's a fan of seafood and doesn't like spicy things. The setting itself was inviting and perfect for a first date with some chill music and low lighting with a candle on each table which was a nice touch. All in all I can say that this place is a nice place for people who don't mind some spice and want to make a lasting impression for that date. 😉

We've been to Mexico loads of times and we absolutely love the food! Tried the takapuna branch once and while still good, we definitely prefer ellerslie! Tradition is we always get the guacamole which never disappoints, great snack to fill the whole while you have a beer and chat with your mates! We always make pigs of ourselves and over order then take some food home with us as it all looks and smells delicious! We usually end up getting two tacos and one fried chicken.. Each lol the tacos are amazing I always go for the fish one which they usually have on the menu then I rotate between the pork, beef or chicken. The fried chicken however is definitely a must! Really delicious and spicy, cooked perfectly and accompanied by great dipping sauces. Love Mexico and definitely recommend for a date night, group dinner and drinks or even a solo lunch!

This would be my third time here and I must say, the third time was a charm. <br/><br/>Before I go on, if portion is an important factor for you than this may not be the place for you. Also I noticed by the other reviews that larger groups tend to rate lower so might wanna consider that. <br/><br/>The first two times I came here I really enjoyed it but whoever the team was tonight....bear hug!!!<br/><br/>THE FOOD <br/>Quacamole (4.8/5) - There's nothing better than hot fresh out of oven (or fryer) nachos with a simple yet tasteful guacamole. If you want to start off you meal this is the best place to start. <br/><br/>Patatas Bravas (5/5) - The was from the special menu so if you hear it being availible jump at it while you have the chance!!!! It's basically chorizo crumb, spices tomato, chipotle smothered on some potatoe. Yum!!!!<br/><br/>Achiote planka pork belly (5/5) - I'm a sucker for pulled pork and that bbq sauce flavour. Whats more is the coriander was just enough to balance the rich flavor if the taco. <br/><br/>Beef Salsa Negra (4.5) - My mate got this one but i managed to smuggle a bite, it was more mellow then my pork belly one and it had this nice crunch between bites, the texture similar to the onion flavouring in migorine noodle packets. <br/><br/>Mexico Fried Chicken (4/5) - The past two times I came here this was a 5/5, but the batter this time felt like it had a little less flavour than usually. Eithier way def worth the risk of buying. <br/><br/>Barbocoa Chicken (4.5/5) - This was a 5/5 for me but my mate said he could smell the chicken meat in this one, although he has superhuman smell. <br/><br/>Passionfruit & Lemongrass drink (5/5) - This drink is like the calmer fruity uoscale cousin to lemonlime & bitters. Wasn't gonna get it but tasted my mates one, couldnt resist. <br/><br/>Orange scented cheesecake (5/5) - Now don't underestimate this one. This cheesecake is actually a deconstruction in which the biscuit is on the top. Now normally ive had bad experiences with deconstructed dishes but man this was heaven in a jar. Its better to have this if your more on the full side as its a mellow dessert. <br/><br/><br/>THE ENVIRONMENT <br/>It's not often you can go to a pack restaurant and still comfortably talk to your friend across the table but somehow the acoustics in the room allow for it. The music is relaxing, good vibes, great decor, and warm. Night allows for a more intimate scene whereas day not so much (the second time I came there was a brid in the restaurant)<br/><br/>THE STAFF <br/>Of the three times I came here the third was the most friendly, alqays checked on how we liked our dishes, prompt and responsive. <br/>Generally consistent all three times. <br/><br/>WAS IT WORTH IT? <br/>If your looking for cheap and decent you may want to reconsider. But other then that definately worth it!!

Always enjoy my experience at Mexico, and have had consistently friendly and informative service from waiters. I find the quesadilla to be the perfect portion size and is good to share. However one waitress recommended the fried chicken as a main, but it is definitely too small to be a main. Would not order it again for the price.  Love the creativity of the menu and how it changes sometimes, and love the range of hot sauces at the table.
Priya
Loved this place. Sharing lots of little dishes and so many vegetarian options! Yummy desserts as well. My blood orange soda was quite refreshing as well. Only thing I would like is more heat on the food, without having to add their chilli sauces as I love the flavor of fresh chillies. Overll, definitely recommend

I love this place. It's my local Mexico and it's great. The staff are always attentive, the service is great, friendly and helpful If you haven't been before or want to try something different. Food is fast and tasty. We usually have a soft taco each, share some fried chicken and a quesadila. We come at least every 6 months when the menu changes so all the flavours are new.<br/> I'm not one for vegetarian food if meats on the menu so I can't comment on that. <br/> Over the summer months they do a whole range of margaritas that are deliciously dangerous. Traditional lime, black doris and the blackberry and coconut are all good. <br/>If you want a nice atmosphere for a fun feed and like interesting flavours this is the place. I see other people have commented it's bit bland but I love it and will keep returning.

Came for lunch. We were nicely greeted and the service from the young waitress was good all day. We ordered one of the margaritas (lychee and chilli) and it was a very interesting drink. The fried chicken was outstanding, but the prawn taco, lamb quesadilla (oddly sweet) and chicken quesadilla (too much mint) weren't the best, for various reasons. Perhaps the chef was trying new things and I know the quality has been better in the past so I look forward to returning here and having a more tasty meal in the future.

I have previously been to the Mexico restaurants in Britomart and Ponsonby and I don't understand why people love these places. The Britomart one was passable as a casual restaurant but everything about the Ponsonby one was appalling. My partner and I were not excited when his work said their Christmas function was at Mexico Ellerslie.<br/><br/>The fiesta menu was served which meant we got to try a lot of Mexico's new menu without making any decisions ourselves. The food was far better quality than at the Ponsonby branch. I do question some of the choices on the fiesta menu. Fried chicken and quesadillas are great for sharing but single items are awkward and difficult to divide up with people you don't know. I feel the quieter, shy people missed out on some items.<br/><br/>Although the food was better than previous occasions I still think the food lacks flavour and my partner was not impressed by the range of hot sauces. The original margarita is good and the other flavours sound very creative. It seems some people love adding colourful hot sauces to bland Mexican fusion food but it just isn't for me.

Popped in today for a quick lunch, menu had changed since the last time I dined there. We had the ceviche, ribs and portobello mushrooms, all yum! Staff were all very friendly, a young waitress by the name of India seated us, made recommendations and outlined their specials. She made our dining experience much more enjoyable by taking the time to chat and check up on us throughout our meal. Will return 😊

Mexico has a lovely casual atmosphere (a little cold in winter)<br/>The food is flavorsome and the tequila varieties are plentiful, staff friendly enough.<br/>However..... the portion size of both food and drinks does not equate to the price by a long shot. <br/>We are both healthy fit people that don't overeat but felt if they could double the size of every single portion of food wwould return.

■ Beautiful decor<br/>■ Creative menu<br/>■ Tapas/shared plates<br/><br/>I love Mexico!! I've only ever been to the one at Britomart but the one at Ellerslie was a nice change for sure! The restaurant is actually huuge. So spacious and has a lot of energy and an upbeat atmosphere. I love the tapas style of eating and because everything is made to share, you get to try delicious small bites of Mexican fusion with every plate.<br/><br/>My absolute favorite is the Fried chicken hands down! They're hot, crispy and has a really nice kick. The Guacamole is also quite refreshing! Because the dining area is so open and vibrant, this place is family friendly and makes for a fun night out with your Amigos!

I was  here last week and was among the first 4 of a group of about 15-20 to leave. My bill was on another table, and those guys were still eating, they didn't leave at the same time as I did. <br/><br/>So I asked the lady at the register if she could divide the pitcher cost by however many glasses you can get out of it because I'd had only one glass.<br/><br/>I did not appreciate the way she handled the situation at all. She said as loud as she could, "that's something you people have to decide and let us know, we told you before, go and ask your people, BLAH BLAH BLAH."<br/><br/>i got really annoyed as this was a new team i'd joined and i'm new to the group. plus i didn't wanna go back to the table where everyone was still eating and put everyone on the spot about the bill while they were having fun. The whole outing was a farewell for one of the girls and she was on that table so another reason why i didn't wanna do it<br/> <br/>so i paid for my food and one full pitcher . $34 dollars for 2 tiny tacos, and a glass of Margarita.

First time at this wonderful restaurant and it is  winner!  Manager Keeland made our experience the very best. His friendly attitude and suggestions what to eat made it a pleasurable experience. We tried a number of dishes but the Enchiladas and the beetroot salad was awesome. Washed down with a cold corona made this Mexican restaurant one of the best in Auckland. We will be back!Don Graham

Stopping off for a bite to eat in Ellerslie, it had been a while since I'd visited Mexico so it was the perfect choice.<br/>It was relatively busy, but service was great from getting seated through to ordering, delivery of food & checking in on how it was going.<br/>If you like Margaritas, I still think that Mexico do one of the best Classic Margaritas around. They do have a full menu of different flavours, but I can't go past the original. <br/>I decided to have the Dorado (beef) soft shell taco. It was freshly made & full of well balanced flavours. Also the guacamole - theirs is always nice & chunky. It lacked a bit of flavour, but there is a great range of hot sauces on each table so you can add spice to taste.<br/>Looking forward to visiting again soon, will hopefully have room for their delish desserts then. No room today.

I loved the nightime vibe of this place. Food was good and staff was really friendly. It was first time for me trying Mexican food and enjoyed the whole experience very much.

Last night we had a very special birthday in our tight-knit group - We had all been to Mexico Ponsonby before (which is a super busy establishment) <br/>And had such a great time, the delicious plates of food came flying out and we all left feeling really full.<br/><br/>We were all looking forward to going back but trying somewhere more local.<br/><br/>Excitedly we were all headed to Mexico Ellerslie and had opted (AGAIN) for the Set Menu 'Feista Menu'.<br/><br/>We waited about 2-3 minutes to be seated by the manager who was less than friendly. <br/>Anyway we decided on our cocktails, a few of us lingered at the bar around 10 minutes waiting to be served. It was well worth the wait when mine arrived - It was delicious. <br/><br/>We had a table of 12 (8 starving males and 4 ladies) and were given two small bowls (about 10 chips in each bowl) of corn chips and Salsa, Then given 4 portions of this corn dish - ALL BETWEEN 12 people. <br/>We asked if we could have another portion as it wasn't cutting it - She declined abruptly and handed us the full menu and said we can pay for extra if we want more food.. <br/>so we kindly requested to stop the Set Menu as we had been there an HOUR and only been given such a small amount of food and we would pay for what we had eaten. She said no and that the kitchen had prepped for us - that the rest of our Food would be out soon and took an order for which 'Soft Shell Taco' we would like. <br/><br/>30 minutes later they arrived. One had been requested without spicy sauce. It came with Spicy sauce. I said we ordered one without sauce the snotty waitress fanned around asking whose it was - A friend joked 'I'll have it' she slammed down the plate and said 'well u can have it and someone else can pay for it' - I picked up the plate and said 'excuse me we asked for no spicy sauce so you have got the order wrong' and she stormed off. Mine arrived and it was under-cooked and cold. <br/><br/>We were all extremely unhappy with the wait time (For a kitchen that had apparently 'PREPPED' for our arrival) and the rudeness of the staff - I'd actually never experienced such terrible customer service.. That I decided I would say something. I was not going to pay $35 + for this meal and God knows how long the rest of our food was going to take to come out. It was 8:45 by then and we had all arrived just after 7pm! <br/><br/>After a lengthy argument and a landslide of excuses, she finally agreed to let us leave and pay for what we had. <br/>She then walked off and proceeded to complain ABOUT us amongst the other staff while we were still there - HOW PROFESSTIONAL..<br/><br/>BUT It gets worse - After such a hostile experience a member of our group said 'This place is the pits' (And that's him putting it lightly) The guy behind the bar said 'What!' in an aggressive tone and then proceeded to drop his belongings down and said 'Let's go then'<br/>We will NEVER be back to MEXICO Ellerslie.

Good service... the girl was really friendly and on to it.. if anyone can keep up with our group I think they deserve stars.. we order multiple things multiple times and it gets crazy.<br/><br/>The food itself was nice.. I got the soft shell crab all to me and shared the fried chicken... sounds a lot.. but they come in small portions and make a good meal.<br/><br/>I feel the cost was very very reasonable considering the food. <br/><br/>Overall defs a 4/5

Came here last Friday with a couple of friends. Staff were very friendly although they came and asked us what we wanted to drink before we even got a chance to look at the menu..<br/><br/>I understand that the purpose of this restaurant is to share.. I just wish they gave you bigger portion sizes especially at the price you are paying.. We got to share: fried chicken, squid, chicken quesadilla & a couple of tacos. The food is nice especially the fried chicken & squid. Taco's are also tasty. I found the quesadilla very bland and average with not much filling. <br/><br/>Will most likely be back to try some other things on the menu.

This is one of those places where you know what to expect and their highlight along with fried chicken is GREAT SERVICE which is consistent. Their decor is unusual and very funky as well, they got these cages filled with corona bottles and some really skilled wall art.<br/>We had the bistec mushroom quesadillas and friend chicken with Mexican sangria. Everything was mouth watering delicious, just if they could increase the portion size for chicken that would be just perfect. Staff made sure we were taken care of asked if we have been there before or they would run through the menu for us. Overall this place is a HIT HIT HIT!
Brett
Yes yes yes! Been to Mexico quite a few times now and have never a single complaint. Taken friends with me a few times and they are amazed! Food is amazing, staff super friendly and prices are very reasonable!
Kieran
Meixco have become the Cobb & Co. of Mexican food, not that that's a bad thing. All up, the Mexico's around Auckland have 723 Zomato ratings against their name. The very last thing this franchise needs is me writing up some sort of smarmy review which makes it look as though I know what I'm talking about.<br/><br/>The food as usual was simple and beautiful, guacamole, fried chicken, quesadilla's and the crab balls with fried kale.  The service was enthusiastic and attentive.  <br/><br/>One gripe, the restaurant was oh so cold, temperature wise I felt like i could have been eating my food at the Lucky Taco on Ponsonby Rd.<br/><br/>How many Mexican's does it take to screw in a light bulb?  Juan.

I am absolutely in love with mexico and will always be amazed by there food & drink they have to offer! my daily mexico is the Britomart outlet although as i was needed in Ellerslie this week i decided to give there one a try.... AMAZING! there outlet is a lot bigger and a little less packed so its perfect for a date night or quiet drinks with your friends and family, there presentation was definitely a lot more interesting, Only downside upon arrival was when i walked in it was a tad confusing as to if i was supposed to  just sit right down or if you're supposed to be shown a table, there was no one who welcomed me at the door. I will always love the Britomart outlet for when i want a bit of banter before going out for the night with my gal friends, but if you're more up for a quieter atmosphere Ellerslie is right for you! especially if you haven't been to mexico before it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Finally gave it a go!!! I had a glass original Mexican city margarita and mushroom quesllidas, soooooo good!!! Also, the ambience here is amazing

Love this Mexico because it's so easy to get a table compared to the more central branches. The food is consistently tasty and the staff provide top notch service. Can't go wrong with the mushroom quesadilla.
Natasha Kumar
Sooooo good , love tapas and I love how they change their menu. The chicken wings are good and I like how they put certain random flavours together that end up tasting amazing!
Marley
It was pretty good, simple Mexican street food. The mushroom and chicken quesadillas were great and it was fun to order many different smaller plates rather than a few larger ones. However, there were not many dishes without chilli which limited our choice. The staff were friendly though and the ambience is enjoyable.

worst ever. Lighting really bad . To much noise, Sevice is absolute rubbish. No explainations about meals, Very slow service. Every thing was bad about this.<br/>Not happy at all. Please leave ellerslie now.

What an awesome place to chill out over food. Had been there yesterday with few friends for a birthday party. All of us tried Mexican food for the 1st time and I must say we were floored by the taste and flavours of Mexico. <br/><br/>We tried Salsa Roja and Esquites Corn and yes the famed fried chicken... And a few other stuff ... And most of it was finger lickingly delicious. We had 2 kids with us nd two vegetarians who were adults... It seemed it was just the right place to go to as it had almost everything for everyone.<br/><br/>Food will rate high, so will the ambience. ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️<br/><br/>As they would say in Mexicana... 'La Comida Mexicana Es Deliciosa... ' 😘<br/><br/>

The place has a great Mexican theme going. Well it better have given the name right? <br/><br/>The go to dish here is the Mexico fried chicken. Everyone orders it. Everyone loves it. Can't go wrong with the sangria too. Best to explore the menu and order a few things with some friends and just pick off each other's plates. Good friendly staff as well.

came here for dinner last week, we were seated almost immediately - such a cool restaurant with amazing cultural decorations - only thing is lighting is very dark. we ordered guac and corn chips, black bean and smoky bacon dip, and the esquites. the guac was pretty standard, if anything a little small for the price, the esquites was super yum and full of flavour, my friend who got the black bean dip said she had wished it had been a warm dish as she felt that would have made it more enjoyable. my friend also had one of the margaritas which she loved! for mains we had the mushroom quesadilla, the calamari and the famous friend chicken. everything was delicious and a good size - the calamari in particular surprised us for its freshness and the flavouring was delicious. staff were attentative and friendly and the overall experience was enjoyable and yum!
Spoogy
Great interior, lots of character but very loud which just adds to the atmosphere. We got a range of dishes as recommended by the waitress and they didn't disappoint. Not the best "fancy" Mexican I have been too but still yummy (non fancy would be old El Paso styles...). Would most likely return.
Delysse
I've had many good times here. After a poor start (rude staff was not appreciated), the current people are warm and friendly. Food always appears quickly and is tasty and pretty authentic. Bubbly sangria is to die for.
Karen
Came here for the first time, I've heard a lot about their fried chicken so it was a must try. <br/><br/>I don't really know what the big deal about it was, it a little too crispy/hard for my liking, definitely had a kick to them especially with the sauces. Not saying it was bad but I've definitely had better fried chicken. <br/>My fave would have been the fried chicken taco, definitely something different but the flavors were really lovely in them too.<br/><br/>Has a very lively, busy vibe, a great place to chill with some drinks but not so much if you want a nice relaxing place to eat.
Cathy Bower
Great place for lunch, my personal favourites are the quesadillas. The tacos for $7 only each are great as well. I just do not like the fried tacos and prefer the soft shell tacos.
Niki Powers
First time eating out here. Food reviews for average are way out of line with the quality of food served. Well presented, great taste with a pretty neat cocktail list to accompany the food. Great, friendly service in neat, atmospheric surroundings with 3 areas to choose from. So good I went back for lunch the following day. Huge thanks Mexico!

If you're after a place with a delicious drinks menu at reasonable prices, easygoing/ friendly staff, and a great atmosphere, Mexico is the place to be. It's quite hard to choose a drink because they all sound so good (the menu descriptions for the margaritas are awesome) but we settled on Tinto Sangria, Black Plum & Cinnamon Margarita, and Melon and Mint margarita. I usually order the Tinto Sangria when I visit Mexico if you're after something fruity, sweet, and mature at the same time. All three were made exceptionally well with enough alcohol to be tasted, and without being sugary sweet. I would definitely order those exact same margaritas again but there's another 8 on the list to tick off!
Las Akurugoda
Had a great time having dinner at Mexico. Staff / Service was fantastic. Would reccomend the spicy chicken and the lime coriander drink to anyone. We went through few tapas and it was a good night. However i dont think it's great value for money.

Was suprised by the small portions! But turned out well as the smaller portions were well priced and allowed us to purchase several things off the menu and to try the different flavours available😊😊 the food was delish! Well made, fresh, simple but full of flavours! 😋😋

I came here expecting it to be a better version of the usual Mexican fare that you get everywhere. It wasn't. It was different. And much much better. You'll see familiar names on the menu like Taco but it's not old El Paso. It's mucho better. And the decor is cool. Like your life has gone badly wrong and you've ended up in a Mexican Cantina wrong. The attention to detail with decor and food is excellent. The level of service was good for a sunny afternoon....... and the beers slipped down easily. Nice place. I'll be going back.
Wanderlust
I came here for a Christmas function with a large number. They were so easy to organise with and was completely stress free! <br/><br/>We got the Fiesta menu for 35$ pp and we could not finish all the food!! There were plenty of dishes available for the vegetarians which was brilliant. The food was delicious!! Even though it was packed, each dish was 10/10. The plates were cleared in a timely manner and the waitress was very patient with our table. <br/><br/>The drinks were flowing all night and our tables were cleared. Thanks for giving us q great night!

I LOVE Mexico! Am never disappointed whenever I go. This time in particular we received amazing service and we were so incredibly full. We had amazing tacos, the patatas de maize, esquites, had a tasty sangria and for desert I had an AMAZING chocolate coconut creamy desert that I can't recall the name of but man was it big and so good!
Christopher Dugan
Cold & churlish staff, horrendously long wait for rubbish food of minuscule portions (even for tapas). Utter rubbish, style over substance.<br/><br/>Don't waste your time, or money. This place is one of the worse restaurants in town and that's just based on the attitude of the staff alone.
Labellelune
This restaurant is amazing! Everything was so great, the food is extremely delicious especially the Mexican style fried chicken. Their tacos were fab as well only wish they were bigger considering price. But Decoration/atmosphere and services were great as well. The food was super fast too. Just a great restaurant !!
HJ
The energy at this place is something else! Great staff, interesting decor and so much attention to detail! Can't go wrong with the Mexican fried chicken - a must have when dining her. This place can often be full to the rim and unfortunately you can't book unless you have a large group. However turnaround times aren't too bad and they have a good selection of drinks to keep you occupied.<br/><br/>The dishes are all reasonably small so you'll need to get a few to fill you up - works out well for groups as you get to try a lot from the menu.
Mohammed Bin Opata
Great decor fresh fab food and really friendly service. Could use much larger portion size for chicken and churros . Really loved the inside of the place

I love Mexico, the food here is amazeballs. I always go for the chicken quesedilla plus another item, usually some new and weird sounding thing on the menu or specials board. They change their menu seasonally so there's always something new to try. They change the flavours in their quesedillas but I always get it with a side of onion crema cos that stuff is gold. The cerviche is so fresh and flavourful and makes me question what I have against fish. If you get a chance then try the polenta chips too. And ALWAYS get the mexico fried chicken, it does not fail. The service here is great and I love that you can order a bunch of smaller dishes as they're reasonably priced. They get a 4.0 because I'm not a fan of the desserts and although the beer choices are good (there's also a tequila tasting menu) the cocktail/mocktail choices could be better.
Coco
Mexico is a great place to go with a few friends since the food is more of a sharing type. The first time I went, I was blown away but the second time was a little average, so its a hit or miss. <br/><br/>The menu is a little confusing with the names of the ingredients so I found myself just guessing and picking random dishes, but the staff were always happy to explain anything I wasn't sure about. I highly recommend the chicken quesadillas oh my god they were to die for! However, the second time, I ordered the three cheese quesadilla and i was a little disappointed and wished I had gotten the chicken one! My friends also love the fried chicken here, but personally I'm not a huge fan. <br/><br/>Overall, great atmosphere and 10/10 for the chicken quesadillas ;)
India Shores
Mexico is a great place to come when you want flavoursome Mexican food and a wide range of drinks to choose from. The Ellerslie outlet has a large outdoor area where we were seated as the indoor area was full. This wasn't an issue though, as there was plentiful heating and I didn't find myself cold at all during any point of the night. <br/><br/>My parents usually get wine at dinner and they were a bit disappointed at the wine list but as the waiter pointed out, Mexico is famous for its tequila menu. The service was good, and the food came quickly. We ordered the chicken taco, the beef taco and the fish taco (X2 of each), the fried chicken, and the 3 cheese quesadilla and the chicken quesadilla. Between four of us we finished everything except for a few pieces of the 3 cheese quesadilla! The tacos are really yum, I was especially a fan of the fish one. The fried chicken is always a favourite, although notably not as spicy as I have had in the past. The quesadillas are good, but every time I've had them they have tasted slightly burnt so I'm unsure if that is just how they are supposed to be or if they really are burnt. I also ordered a tropical margarita which was quite small considering how much it cost. <br/><br/>Overall it was a good experience at Mexico, only qualm is the prices, some of the dishes are slightly on the expensive side
SS
Absolutely love this Mexico. Staff are friendly and food is always spot on. Photos speak for themselves 😍

The Mexican fried chicken was delicious (and very spicy). <br/>The corn chips were a good palate cleanser for me as I was struggling with the heat of the fried chicken. <br/>Didn't really like the prawn chorizo empanadas - took one bite and decided it wasn't for me.<br/>Tried some chicken quesadilla - that was delicious. If I came back I would definitely be ordering that for myself.<br/>Good range of non/and alcoholic drinks.<br/>Good prices.<br/>Lots of interesting stuff to look around at and read.<br/>Found out the next day that half of our table spent the following night glued to the toilet, though we can't pin it down to what they ate as no one had exactly the same thing. Luckily I was not affected 😏

Total rip-off. Having been craving mexican food I was recommended this place, but it does not live up to the hype. We paid $20 for a 'carafe' of margaritas for 2 people expecting a regular size, but we received this mini carafe which only filled 1 and a half minature high-ball glasses as it was mainly ice. For the main we had the fried chicken which tasted nice but was entree sized. We also had 2 soft shell tacos which cost $7-8 each and were miniscule, gone in two bites. <br/>For the same size tacos overseas but with better flavour it costs $2-3. We were thinking maybe 3 for $10 would be suitable pricing for what we got, not 2 for $14. Even if they made it 3 for $14 it would still be better value than their current prices. <br/>Lacklustre service, tacky af. Very disapointed.

Fantastic Place - love the ambiance, friendly efficient staff and food is AMAZING.  I had the Esquitas and Mexican Chicken and they were both to die for - especially the seasoning and sauces. Would highly recommend.

Place looks and feels like a mexican bar/eatery. Heaps of people and we came lunch time. Staff is as professional as it gets. Everything to share aside from the soft tacos. Bistek Quesadilla is lovely. Cheese fondue with corn bread could use some more corn bread to dip in. We ordered extra corn chips to finish off the dip. Cold brew coffee is very interesting and you have to mix it yourself. Tastes good says the missus.

Mexico's fiesta themed decor led me to get amongst the south of the boarder, day of death vibe. Indeed this place had impressed me from the moment I walked in. The staff were very nice and had good knowledge regarding the menu. <br/><br/>The food took a while to arrive but it was definitely worth the wait. The fried chicken was amazing... Definitely try it out if you're into crispy flavoursome chicken (not sure who would oppose to that?! :p). The only downfall is the portion size of the dishes! <br/><br/>Overall, good experience, good food, would recommended if you're into tapas styled/sized food.

This particular Mexico Restaurant would have to be the best one of the lot. It was the whole package experience. This one night was raining cats and dogs, the staff were very accommodating in keeping my wife and I warm with blankets and our own private bar heater. Then out came the drinks (cocktails) and food. Definitely will be going back there. Highly recommended.

Went here with friends on a Wednesday night for dinner and it was humming. A great atmosphere and helpful staff. The tacos were delicious and the quesidillas never fail to disappoint at Mexico. We had a carafe of wine and left feeling very full for $35 per person. Would definitely recommend for a cheap and cheerful catch up with friends.

Had the fiesta menu, the amount was great for the number of people we had there. Both the sangria were amazing. My favourite dish had to be the ceviche. Would definitely go back again in a large group.

Best Mexico out of them all. The American gal is always smiley, on form and always looks after us. Food is quick and tasty. Love how the menu changes often, means we don't get bored. Yum

A Mexican treat is always satisfying especially to celebrate something. My partner and I decided to hit this Mexico ( we have been to the one in Britomart numerous times). We knew what to order even without looking at the menu. Yes, ordered a portion of Fried chicken. I feel the ambience is heaps better than the Britomart one. Was busy for a Tuesday evening. As always food was served within minutes of ordering.<br/>Must try : FRIED CHICKEN, Prawn Taco
Jess
The fried chicken was excellent, had a good kick and was served with a delicious aioli. A great place to stop in for a snack, efficient service also.

Mexico is a good option in Ellerslie. I went there with a friend on a rainy Tuesday night and it was quite busy despite being a weeknight.<br/><br/>Our food was served quickly. We had a soft shell taco each (my pulled pork taco was amazing - delicious and fresh) and shared the fried chicken. I can see why people rave about it, it's not oily and comes with great dipping sauce.<br/><br/>Service is friendly and pretty quick. A good place to have a fun catch up w friends.

Been to M a few times w. friends for drinks and dinner and it's a fun pl to visit, although the food isn't as spectacular as people make it out to be. Give me The Lucky Taco any day. We took a mate for an impromptu b'day dinner one night and M was lucky enough to bring out some free b'day churo's w. a cheeky lit candle. Great effort guys, it was much appreciated.

I've never really led astray from my European version of at home tacos and nachos so visiting Mexico in Ellerslie has sparked up a very keen delight for wonderful new flavours my taste buds had been oblivious too! I ordered a superb glass of the mulled sangria just perfect on a cold wintery Sunday evening. For an entree we ordered Esquites corn -so tasty then had 2 soft tacos, one was the Braised pork belly which just melted away in my mouth and Roast pumpkin which was also really delicious we also got the Albondigas which is pork and prawn meatballs. If you wish to really tantalise your taste buds with divine flavour infusions I highly recommend one of the Mexico Restaurants. Great friendly service as well.

Mexico is one of my favourite restaurants and the one in Ellerslie is great because it is spacious and I have never had to wait for a table, which you often have to at the Ponsonby or Britomart Mexico.<br/>They have a covered outdoor area which you can eat at, or just hang out and have a tequila or two. Inside is the 'restaurant' where there are high and low tables and often if you are not in a large group you will end up sharing a table.<br/>I had my usual today, a soft shell taco (lamb today) and shared the spicy chicken. Unfortunately as avocados are out of season guacamole is not on their menu, but usually I get this to share as a starter. My brother had the chicken quesadilla which I snuck a piece. All the food was amazing as usual, obviously I will definitely be back!

Vibrant, colourful, cool and funky. Just some of the words that come to mind to describe this place. This place is all about atmosphere. Such a lively and fun feel to it.<br/><br/>The food tasted nearly as good as the place. We ordered the chicken quesadilla to share, the prawn taco and the braised pork belly taco. The pork belly was just dancing on my taste buds. So tender and spicy and fresh with the pickled radish in there. Definitely a winner dish. Too bad it was so small- I literally scoffed it down in two bites. My friend said that her prawn taco was also delish.<br/><br/>The quesadilla came with a pepper Mayo ish sauce and was surprisingly filling! I had mine with the green chilli sauce on the table. Such a good combo. Be sure to try all the chilli sauces on the table! <br/><br/>The staff were just amazing. We were served by 3 different staff while we were there and they were all so friendly and attentive. Made the experience that much more enjoyable. <br/>An awesome place to get together for drinks and small finger foods!! <br/><br/>P.S- Dont forget to get the fried chicken! Definitely a must try :)
Romina Kolesnik
This is my usual place to eat! Food is cheap but delicious! The tacos are pretty good sized and has a lot of flavor. The Mexico fried chicken is life! It is the best fried chicken I've had so far! The drinks are delicious alcoholic or not. Staff are super friendly and the atmosphere is great! Really good for casual dinners with friends

Went for a date on Friday night. Me and my girlfriend were very impressed with the speed of service, food, margaritas, wait staff and the prices. We enjoyed ordering a few dishes and shared them. Highly recommended for a nice meal out

I guess I expected more? No doubt a great place to meet friends for a good laugh - lots of drink options - and the staff are pretty friendly, but the food wasn't so great, and a bit expensive for the serving size. We went for lunch with our two young daughters and tried all the tacos and fried chicken, and to be honest the kids didn't like the food at all, and my wife and I were ho-hum about the flavours. There was no "wow!", just "oh?". For what we paid I guess i expected more. So I guess if you want a party its a great choice, but if you want yummy mexican food for a young family then there are much better options.
Nikki
Went for lunch with a group. I had the quesadilla which was tasty and a side of guacamole. That was enough for me but a man would probably want another dish as well. The service was very good, friendly, accommodating and attentive without being annoying. Not a place for wine lovers the wine list consists of 3 choices and wine is served in a tumbler (this wino was not impressed by that). We shared the Blanc sangria which went very well with the food, not so great on its own as you can really taste the clove. I will go again with my daughter who loves tacos, a great place for beers with mates i think.
Gus
I went to Mexico for a staff get together the other night and had a very nice time.  The menu is perfectly suited for a nibble over a few beers.  We had a variety of dishes, the highlight was the mexican fried chicken with the chipotle mayo.  Moist juicy chicken, crispy spicy coating, what's not to love?  My fish taco was very enjoyable the nachos and dips are excellent, we had the salsa and standard type nachos, and guacamole that came with hot fresh fried nacho chip things which were excellent.  I enjoyed the ceviche, and even a few of the less adventurous members of the group were won over by it.  The dish had the usual zing of citrus and also a taste of coconut.  Many of my dining companions enjoyed the quesadillas, I personally found them a little dry and would next time double down on a different soft taco.  The service is reasonable, the atmosphere is bustling but not so noisy you can't be heard, all in all a good night was had by all
Christy
Went to Mexico Ellerslie a few months back but would recommend this place over any of its counterparts (tried the city and Ponsonby). The food was delicious and good portions. Service was good and a big area for seating. Found that Ponsonby was very stingy with the fillings and the city....well the service was terrible. Ellerslie is the place to go to try Mexico. Outer suburbs are sometimes the way to go.

We were welcomed by a lovely girl with a bright (red) smile and pretty flower in her hair.<br/><br/>The deco was good, colourful but somewhat too artificial? They're trying very hard to create the Mexican atmosphere but its just a bit too over. Great music played but just a bit too loud.<br/><br/>Anyway, the food was delicious. The pan fried chorizo is our favourite. Tacos were very nice too. Lots is attractive looking drinks floating around, wish l wasn't working that day :)

I love Mexico, I've been to almost every single one around Auckland and Hamilton. <br/>As always, the food was to die for.. Delicious! I always like to try something new so we ordered the corn with tortilla snack to share, and the polenta chips. Great choices followed by my all time favourite - the fried chicken! <br/><br/>Service was great, everyone was very friendly! All the staff looked so young like not over 18 which was weird but they all did a great job :)
Sarah Malcolm
Have been to this Mexico many times and love it! The staff are lovely and the food always good. The fried chicken is a must. They have changed the menu recently and the lamb taco was amazing!

Upon entry I was highly impressed with the deco of the restaurant, we were promptly seated within a minute of arrival which was very impressive. The staff were friendly, patient and prompt in getting us drinks and bringing out the dishes. Me and my partner decided to order snacks first (Esquites & Gucamole)  which were absolutely delightful, full of flavour and left us craving more. The blackened onion crema in the Esquites was the big winner of the dish and brought everything together. The Gucamole was one of nicest I have ever tried and was a nice palette cleanser before trying the specialties. We decided to order the Eggplant and Patatas Bravas which were both equally delightful. I personally preferred the Eggplant over the Patatas Bravas and it was my first time trying raw cauliflower which was pleasantly surprising. The specialties didn't give as much of a punch as the snacks which was quite sad but none the less very appetizing, My partner really enjoyed the Patatas Bravas and left nothing on the dish. For dessert we decided to try the Sweet Potato and Piloncillo Tart and Cinnamon Spiced Churros. Sadly the tart was very bland and lacking any taste but the peanut butter ice cream accompanying the tart was to die for, the churros would have been a real delight if they had of not been mushy in the middle and I found the accompanying salted caramel, chocolate & rosemary crema to be very bitter. What me and my partner did with the dessert was mix the salted caramel, chocolate & rosemary crema with the peanut butter ice cream which was an absolute explosion in our mouths and ended the night at Mexico on an absolute high. With a few small tweaks Mexico can definitely be a 5/5

The service was excellent! On arrival we sat 'outside' the manager, I assume, came out and suggested we move inside she said there would be 30+ guy group coming in. Thank God for her, cos as first timers we didn't know there was an outside/inside thang going on and twas a tad chilly. <br/>The waitress looked cool in her mexicana outfit, I was digging the flower in her hair, they should so sell accessories. <br/>The food, entrée, main, dessert were served up quickly which was good as we were stopping by en route. <br/>Very yummy, the esquites and that chipotle butter in soft tortillas, oh lawdy! That salsa with the chicken quesadilla, closest I've come to having an authentic taste in NZ. The closest match to a food truck I frequent in LA, corner of W Sunset Blvd & N Alvarado St, Echo Park...MEANEST! #justsayin Oh and definitely coming back ?
Hannah K
Love coming here, the staff are always friendly - the other day when I came with my 2yo daughter the guy working there was so nice to her, was chatting away and have her a colouring in sheet with pens. The food is delicious, always love the guacamole & tacos. Once I had the ceviche which was also very nice but maybe a tad too much red onion. Will keep coming back here, and love that the menu keeps changing to keep things fresh

Popped into Mexico Ellerslie for dinner. We were shown our seats and were about to be seated when the rude female manager came over and said <br/>"No you can't sit there...its booked". She told off the waiter and moved us to another seat. This table had no working light, however we managed to read bits of the menu.<br/><br/>We asked to be moved to another seat where there was sufficient light, this was done. We ordered our drinks and asked for fresh corn chips.  During the previous two occasions we were brought the corn chips and salsa, we asked for fresh chips and they came back with the home made chips. This time I checked this before ordering, they assured me it would be fresh.<br/><br/>The chips and salsa was left on our table while we were looking away. Asked the manager to get fresh chips and she stood there and argued for 5 minutes. This rude, unfriendly, loud individual was so irritating, that we left. <br/><br/>The food may be good - but service is what matters - improve your service please.

This is me and the hubby's once a week treat! Possibly tried everything in the menu (do prefer last seasons menu) the ceviche and oinion cream sauce is our fav oh and can't forget the blanco sagarita- my miss 3 lives the oink gavua juice and kids quesadillas
Lauren
The service is great, nothing beats walking into a restaurant and being greeted by friendly staff. The portion sizes are good and the food was delicious!
Corina Elama
Not quite impressed with this. The food was average and the sizes really small. On the other side, the atmosphere and the decorations of the place were quite nice.
Aucklandeats
The best fried chicken in the city. The menu keeps changing seasonally and everything is pretty good but please DO NOT miss out on that fried chicken
Where.iate
Funcky atmosphere, always feels like a party as soon as you walk in.<br/><br/>Great for if you are looking for a quick small bite as they have a tapa styled menu. On the otherhand, they're also excellent for a full night out with the group!<br/><br/>Fav dish: the quesadillas!<br/>

One of my favorite casual eat out, this is the best franchise outlet so far. It's more spacious which you can comfortably chitchat with your friends without shouting to each other.<br/><br/>The quality of their food and beverages are consistently mouth watering, never disappoint me and my mates. <br/><br/>A big well done!<br/><br/>
Jazz Wilson
Ellerslie mexico is in far better taste than the rest of the outlets. The service is alot better! I had mushroom quesadillas, pretty awesome but the best part of Mexico is their amazing margaritas!
Sweet Mama M
My husband is a huge fan of Mexican food so after watching Cirque du Soleil at nearby Alexandra Park, we decided to try out Mexico in Ellerslie, our first introduction to the Mexico franchise. We were both absolutely ravenous by the time that we arrived, having avoided the concession stands and hoping to have a good meal. Walking into the restaurant we could tell that the ambience was more suited to party nights with friends (dim lights, loud music) than deep and meaningful conversations but we weren't too worried.<br/><br/>We were seated promptly upon our arrival but at a large group table in the centre of the room, a little bit awkward when you are a party of two. There were other more suitable tables in the room but they had not been cleared and reset. We took the table and quickly decided on what we wanted to eat, given that it was almost 8pm on a Sunday night and we had a baby-sitter to get home and relieve at some point.<br/><br/>We waited almost fifteen minutes before being served by waitstaff, which was really poor service. To not even come and take drink orders within that time is a rookie mistake. After trying to catch the attention of a couple of waitstaff and discussing with my husband whether we should just try our luck elsewhere, we finally got some service. It was disappointing to find out that they were completely sold out of their chicken and we quickly scrambled to find another option.<br/><br/>The food arrived quickly, which was a definite positive. The chicken mole quesadilla was fantastic, but we found our chicken and beef tacos bland and chili-heavy respectively and our patatas de maize soggy - they could definitely have done with a little extra time between the fryer and the plate. The paper that they were on was practically transparent. A disappointment when the blue cheese milk sauce that accompanied them was so well done.<br/><br/>At this point we decided that we would cut our losses and head off without dessert. The staff member did give my husband a fully-stamped out card for a free taco, possibly as an attempt to salvage our evening. I feel that when you are operating in a trendy and competitive market - and Mexican is a hot cuisine in Auckland right now - you have to go the extra mile and make sure that your service is spot on.<br/><br/>I'd give other franchisees of the Mexico brand a go in future, but I think I'll be giving the Ellerslie branch a miss.

Amazing service and great atmosphere. we came in after lunch on friday for some soft taco's and drinks. Really quick service, nice and spicy, plenty of extra sauces on the table. Particularly liked the corn chips and salsa
Charles C
Great atmosphere and food was surprising good. I guess its a take on Tapas as oppose to single plate serving but hey change is good. They have a changing menu and specials which is great if you frequent the place more often than most. The place is always busy, and that's a great indicator.
Adeline
Lovely dinner with friends on a Friday night. We ordered a few meals to share. It was a struggle trying to see what we were eating though (the place is really dark!), but who cares aye - it's all about the taste. Had some tacos, quesadillas, fried chicken (a huge favourite!), salsa corn chips (yummo!) and churros (the best!) ... no complaints there - we all went home happy and well-fed.<br/><br/>Service was a delight, atmosphere was vibrant and lively for a wee lil spot like Ellerslie :)
Peter Mumby
The front of the restaurant looks fantastic, like something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie. I thought it was a restaurant but it is a bar with expensive bar snacks. I got a tiny dish for $14 served by an apologetic waiter, then another tiny $16 dish. A couple of beers, $45 later I left feeling hungry and somewhat disappointed. The food was actually quite nice but the servings were very small. Cool ambience, great authentic wall paintings and decor, well thought out. Just need bigger servings, Mexico is after all a poor country. You should get value for money. It is not nouveau cuisine, it should be wholesome hearty fare.
John Roshan
Don't do it. It's advertised as a restaurant, but it's an expensive tapas bar. Very dark - can hardly see the menu. Three kids - one fussy one agonized over the menu for 1/2 an hour then decided and we ordered - then the waitress says "have you seen the kids menu?" Perhaps that should have been asked when we sat down not after we ordered. Tacos were tasty - Squid dish was insipid at best. Been to Mexico and had great Mexican food in California - even had some fantastic Mexican food in Mt Maunganui - this is not good Mexican food. There are six of us here that won't be back and won't recommend to others. Never had a Margarita served in a Tumbler before either, and $12.00?!
Liz Holmes
Simply love it! It's cheap, lovely staff and something different in the middle of Ellerslie. The Margaritas are amazing and the sangria is pretty awesome too. Can't go here without ordering the fried chicken..yum! It takes awhile to be seated because it's popular so try going before 7 :)
Jaguar Jaguar
Disappointing.... Went with a group of 11 people. <br/>Within the first half an hour half the meals showed up.. An hour later a few more bunches showed up. That was it! Two meals didn't arrive the whole time we'd been there which was a whole 2 hours! Several times we asked the waiter about our food, they took in what we said and didn't come back. Let's also add to the disappointment, the price range compared to the portion size of meals. Terrible! $14 dollars for a few pieces of chicken the size of a egg? No thanks. Not a good value for your money unless you're willing to spend a fortune and wait a couple hours.
Alex Stewart
If you want Mexican food, this is not the place to eat.<br/><br/>We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night expecting the restaurant to be busy, which it was. We were told that we would need to wait at the standing bar for 20 minutes for a table which we thought was fine, although standing at a bar does make it feel as though you are in a pub environment, not a restaurant. <br/><br/>While we were there, I checked out what I thought was the bar snacks menu and wasn't overly impressed at the selection but thought we would be seeing a bigger selection when we got to our table.<br/><br/>About 25 mins after arriving we were seated at a bar type table with high stools. Not really what you'd expect to be sitting on in a restaurant. It was also freezing. They should have some patio heaters around.<br/><br/>Our waitress was nice and gave us our menus, we took one look at them and realised that these were the same ones at the bar. I was SO surprised that the menu was TINY! Not only that but not very authentic either. We debated about staying but honestly couldn't see anything that we would remotely want to eat.<br/><br/>The only good thing about this place is the margaritas which are nice, however in a restaurant the food should be the star and this was not the case.
Christina Jesson-Grigg
This was a very disappointing experience for myself and friends. As they don't take bookings we had to stand up for 45 minutes until we got a table. The bar is tiny and there are no seats in there either. When you do get a table its BBQ style, so no back support. If you have any back problems, this is not the place for you. The food tasted okay but the portions were very small. When I went to the toilet there was no toilet paper and the only hand towels where on the floor. This restaurant is not good value for money and I would not recommend it to anyone.
Suzanne
We had eaten at the Britomart Mexico and were keen to try this one which is a lot closer to home. It was a good meal out, friendly staff, efficient and helpful, the atmosphere is busy and energetic and once we had ordered everything reached the table soon after. The food is really good, our waitress made it clear that the way to order is with sharing in mind and to make sure to try a variety of dishes which I thought was wise advice, this is not fine dinning, but a delicious sociable way to eat. I think its also fairly priced. I'm sure we will return.
Mary Underwood
Took my teenage fussy eater with me for dinner last week, I ordered the chips and salsa to start with. <br/>Salsa was lovely and fresh with a hint of coriander. Fussy teenager even ate it.<br/>We were constantly asked how our meals were which was lovely, didn't have to wait too long either for the mains.<br/>I went with the beef taco which was so tasty. She decided on the quesedelas which came with the most amazing blackened onion dip. Wow.<br/>Signed up for the emails and received a voucher for free churros at next visit. Over all a nice experience but maybe a bit too dark. I could hardly see what I was eating.
Susan Fox
We had heard a lot about Mexico in Britomart and were keen to try out the Ellerslie branch which is closer to home. We took our teen sons one of whom was up from Dunedin for Easter. While most of what we ate we enjoyed I think you have to experiment a bit with the dishes and to find your favourites. You can't go wrong with the tacos they good. But one thing that did surprise us is how tiny the portions are and we had to order quite a few and so ended up being not all that cheap. Both boys said they still felt hungry afterwards, the opposite to what we would have thought after having Mexican food. The service was good though we couldn't fault it and the decor was fabulous with a lot of thought having gone into that. They just need to up the portion sizes to feel like it is better value for $ maybe.
Rebecca Burrows
My good friend took me here for lunch I am hooked! Love the idea of sharing tapas! Trying a little bit of each so yummy! This is my new favourite ! Definitely be being more of friends to this restaurant !
Andrew Betts
Simply don't do it.<br/><br/>We were looking forward to having a lovely meal only to be served a large dish of disappointment. Apart from the lovely waitress who took our order (she was very professional), the rest of the staff were non engaging and lacked any customer service. They forgot to bring out some of our food order, they couldn't serve us any wine due to a "pump not working" and what we did eat was tasteless, unrecognisable and well below average.
Marion
We were looking forward to dining at this popular establishment. We are a group of ladies who meet regularly at various restaurants in and around east Auckland. We won't be recommending this place to anyone any time soon. We arrived around 6.30pm and were seated immediately. The first problem encountered was the dim lighting. It seems silly to have to resort to torches in order to read the menu - thank goodness for flashlight ap's on phones! The jug of Sangria was very average and the food was equally so - and don't ask me what it was because I couldn't see what it was! The second problem we had was the volume of the music - what is it with loud music playing in restaurants where people go to enjoy good food, good drink and good conversation! Needless to say there was no good food, no good drink and the conversation was continued elsewhere where we didn't need to shout to be heard.
Mary Ann Laico
Picadillo is normally minced pork and beef, chicken may be used but I would expect a mirepoix of garlic onion and tomatoes seasoned with bay leaf or oregano and or cumin. I have been eating this all my life, but was disappointed to be greeted by ginger. Mex Tex cuisine often do not use ginger. In fact Ginger is very Asian. And the waiters do not know the simple ingredients when asked what adobo is .... which is simply lots of garlic, vinegar, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Some customers would ask its staff the ingredients before ordering. The staff should be very knowledgeable of what's on the menu. It is too pricey for a little parcel of food which is for me just so average.
Sue Peploe
This place looks fabulous, however, the service was terrible. We went before the Springsteen concert and the place was quite empty yet the service was unbelievable. No one came to table so we ordered off the bartender who was grumpy and told us the waitress should be taking orders. When we ordered water we got a bottle but no glassed when another waitress was prompted glasses still didn't arrive...... third waiter later they arrived!<br/>No one ever asked my husband if he would like a second beer.<br/>Food was ok , not as good as Mexico Britomart. People who ordered later got their food before people who'd ordered earlier.<br/>This place could be great but staff need to be trained!
Olivia Winstone
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this place. My favourite standout dish, which I could eat everyday (if I had a budget of $10 everyday for my lunch!) was the red quinoa, which had pumpkin, carrot, coconut &amp; some crisped-up shallot. The flavours in there were incredible. <br/><br/>We went for lunch, so sat in the 'outdoor' area which has ingeniously retained the old high roof structure of the old VDub workshop's forecourt. <br/>Amazing decor throughout the place too.<br/><br/>The only thing I didn't enjoy as much were the corn chips, which were a bit too greasy for my taste.<br/><br/>Lovely waitress - just so welcoming and made us feel like we were very valued guests. They also had colouring crayons and pictures for our daughter, which was great.
Sarah
I was really disappointed with my experience at Mexico in Ellerslie. The portion sizes are the tiniest I have ever seen. And the prices are around $14 each. Will not be returning to here.
Mimi Yang
I was very excited to find out that a Mexico had opened in Ellerslie and was not disappointed after we went for dinner. It is very similar to the Ponsonby branch in that the decoration was bold and unique, the food was also very nicely made. Portion sizes were rather on the small size but was still quite filling all the same. Staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. An aspect that I particularly liked was the change of menu; I eat out reasonably often and don't usually frequent the same place more than a few times but with the change to menu items, I am definitely keen to come back and try more things!
Kate Humphries
I tried the new Mexico in Ellerslie recently as well as going to the one downtown a few times. The hype on the Mexico chains are totally overrated. It's a pub environment that serves Mexican food that's average. If you have been to the USA and had a taco out of a taco truck for $1.50 USD Mexico Ellerslie is so disappointing!! Staff were friendly at this restaurant but the food is dry and portions are tiny! So over this - I'm so sick of Auckland people being so fooled by Mexican food at Mexico. I'm over supporting this restaurant.
Lisa Borrie
I loved this place. The decor was fresh, the staff friendly. The food was delicious and came with GF options. It was well priced although the alcohol was quite expensive. I will go back for sure.
Donna Thompson
This was my first experience to the Mexico chain of restaurants.<br/><br/>We dined for lunch and found the experience to be average.<br/><br/>We found the menu a little sparse. Not a HUGE selection, but not quite enough. The menu that I found online seemed to vary from the one at the restaurant.<br/>We were also told of the specials (I know these change daily) but the waitress had to keep looking at the board to remind herself what they were. I am also keeping in mind that this is a new establishment and there is still some things that need time to be executed properly.<br/><br/>We found that a couple of the items that we wanted to order were not in stock. Bit frustrating as the waitress could have mentioned this in her intro.<br/>Staff were pleasant, establishment was clean and reasonable pricing. You don't need a lot of food as it can be quite filling.<br/><br/>Everything was ordered together, yet one meal came out 5 minutes before the rest. I would have liked everything to come out at the same time considering there was only two of us and three dishes. <br/>Found my entree rather bland, but plenty of kick in my tortilla.<br/><br/>Undecided if I will return in these early stages. Maybe when things are running a bit smoother I will try again.<br/><br/>All in all. Not a bad experience, just some minor things that could be worked on.
Victoria Taua
Didn't think much of this place, the lighting was really bad, and the food was less than average. The quesadillas had a thin slither of filling and the tacos were pretty terrible. I can say I liked the corn chips and guac and the Mango margarita but that's about it.
Jennifer Manalo
This place is muy caliente! It's one of my favourite eateries at the moment and the only place that does really good Mexican style food in Auckland. Mexico has such a cool, fun vibe about it - from the Mexican music playing, the interesting decor on the walls and the smell of the food, it's definitely a sensory overload!<br/><br/>I went to the Ellerslie restaurant with some friends for lunch and everything was perfect! I like this branch a lot more than the Britomart one. There are more tables and open space so it doesn't feel so crowded. The service was super quick and we had a really friendly waitress who was very helpful in recommending a sangria flavour (and she took our photo for us!). We decided on the Blanco Sangria (Pinot Gris, Apple Juice, Elderflower & Cranberry) which was nice and refreshing!<br/><br/>Mexico is a great place to go for a nice casual meal with friends as it's the perfect type of food for sharing so you don't get food envy! We ordered the three cheese quesadilla which was really good and their famous fried chicken (a must-try!) plus our own soft taco each.<br/><br/>My friend also ordered the fava bean soup (which is served cold) which she said was nice. I had their special taco of the day - fish with jalapeno slaw which was pretty good ( I prefer the fish taco at Citizen Park) and my other two friends had the prawn taco which they really liked.<br/><br/>The waiter got our order wrong and gave us the lamb quesadilla but instead of taking it back to the kitchen, she gave it to us on the house. Score! I can't guarantee you'll be as lucky but definitely try Mexico if you haven't already. There's four of them in Auckland and are opening up all over NZ!

food is very yummy, services is very good, but portion is a bit disappointing.

Mexico, I can’t say that this is the best Mexican restaurant in Auckland, but it’s a franchise that I visit frequently because the food has been consistently good. A free table at the Britomart branch can be hard to come by, so I prefer to dine at the Ellerslie store, where the dining area is substantially bigger with more free parking on the residential streets.<br/><br/>When it comes to ordering food at Mexico, I’m rather predictable and tend to order the usual items. The guacamole is by far, my favourite way to start the meal, and a trip to Mexico is never complete without it. The corn chips made in-house is delicate and crispy, unlike the store brought variety which can be hard and stale. The consistency of the guacamole is creamy with chunks of avocado and it has a zesty finish which balances the richness of the avocado and keep the mixture nice and green!<br/><br/>This salsa borders on spicy but not to the extent which covers the taste of the tomato. The version at Mexico is slightly runny and lacks the chunky richness that you would expect. The flavours are great, but the consistency resembled more like sauce than salsa.<br/><br/>Ordering the Mexican Deep Fried Chicken which was highly recommend on the menu is a MUST! The pieces of chicken thighs are cooked to perfection, with the chicken juices still trapped inside the meat pieces. They were moist, well-seasoned and the accompanying sides of mayonnaise helped counter the spice and gave the chicken more flavour.<br/><br/>We decided to try something new on the menu and ordered the smoked eggplant puree which came with warm tortillas. We were overwhelmed by the saltiness of this dish, and we just managed to finish it. The smokiness of the puree was delightful, so were the flavours of the eggplant, but it was way too salty, even with the soft tortillas.<br/><br/>Our two desserts were the highlight of our meal, and it’s a lovely way to end our meal. The anise scented churros with salted caramel and chocolate ganache were fresh out from the kitchen and simply amazing. The anise was not too strong and combining it with the rich ganache was a match made in heaven.<br/><br/>I really enjoyed devouring the macerated fruits and berries. The peaches and strawberries were softened from the maceration process and slighting sweetened. There is a light hint of ginger and tamarind but the fruits were the star of the show. The yoghurt ice cream was zesty and tart, an ideal flavour element to balance the sweetness of the fruit.<br/><br/>I enjoy dining at Mexico with my friends because the lively atmosphere keeps us perky and we always have a great time (but this could be due to the jugs of scrumptious margaritas and sangria). I find the service at the Ellerslie branch to be better and because they have a bigger dining space, we never feel rushed to vacate our table.<br/><br/>Like this review? I love Mexico in Britomart so was very excited when they opened one closer to home in Ellerslie. I was hoping that because it wasn't in the city centre it wouldn't be as busy at the Britomart location but I was wrong. Even on a Wednesday night at 6.30pm the place was packed and we had a half an hour wait (not too bad) so we had a drink at the bar. Like the Britomart location, the restaurant has fantastic decor and a great vibe. It is more open, lighter and larger than Britomart and has separate tables with more elbow room. <br/><br/>The menu is the same as other Mexixco locations and the food just as good. We ordered the Pumpkin in yeast batter, sorrel chimichurri, yellow salsa frita and Quince charred pork belly, habanero pico, green onion, coconut soft tacos, the fried chicken and Papas, wild mushroom, garlic chips, queso seco, salsa borracha quesadilla. The tacos were wonderful. Both tacos had excellent flavours, I would definitely order them again. The fried chicken was amazing, as always, however the quesadilla was disappointing. It was very bland and needed more spice and seasoning, it tasted like dry toast. <br/><br/>Mexico has a great selection of drinks including margaritas and sangria. We ordered a carafe of Black Plum Margarita which was enough for two people, maybe three at a stretch. <br/><br/>For dessert we ordered Salted caramel & chocolate ganache w anise scented churros. The churros were perfect, hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, delicious!<br/><br/>The service was fantastic, friendly and very fast. Mexico Ellerslie is a great addition to the Mexico franchise.

The service is good as we got food well within 5 minutes of our order. Every thing tasted great right from drinks till the dessert. My favourite is rollitos and the rhubarb crema. Parking is hassle as its such a busy area, but I managed to get some on arthur st.

I'll be honest and say I had a bit of a hard time finding this place because I'm not a local and I did not expect Main Highway to be in two bits connected by a different street. I thought streets are usually in one continuous piece? Anyway, it wasn't too bad after the initial confusion walking from Great South Rd to this Mexico. It's newly opened and I had some vouchers to splurge on food. They'd also just changed their menu already after a few weeks of opening so if you're still seeing the menu Zomato collected on January 22, 2014, that one is no longer up to date. They do put up an up to date menu on their website though, if you are keen to have a look beforehand.<br/><br/>The menu they have at your table comes complete with chilli symbols to indicate how spicy the dish is and other symbols to indicate gluten free and whatnot, all of which is explained by the person who'll be monitoring your table regularly throughout the meal in case you need more water, want to order more dishes, and so on. I opted for everything that didn't even have one chilli since I'm not into spicy food, so I ordered a $6 snack of esquites with sweet corn, coriander, chipotle butter, and warm tortillas as well as the $14 black cumin rubbed prawns, orange, leek, tomatillo & fennel crema quesadillas. My boyfriend chose a $8 snack dish of guacamole with tomato pico de gallo & house made corn chips and $12 papas, wild mushroom, garlic chips, queso seco and salsa borracha quesadillas.<br/><br/>The dishes came all at once, which I was not expecting, so it was like a tapas-style picnic and everything on the menu except the tacos can be shared. The esquites looked really nice when I googled what it meant with their free wifi (which, as an aside, only requires you to check in via Fb to access) but I didn't like it much because they used too much sauce. It pretty much was a dish of corn with a huge dollop of sauce on top, and it completely did not taste ilke corn with the sauce which tasted kind of smoky actually. I would have preferred it with just corn (but maybe that's not Mexican enough?). The tortillas were also not warm as promised, but that's okay because it was scorching hot that day. <br/><br/>The guacamole was much better and I loved the slight tartness of tomato with it. They gave us way too much guacamole though and I felt wasteful even after overloading the corn chips with guacamole. Speaking of which, the corn chips were huge. Don't think corn chips like the ones you buy in packets for shared lunch. These are like palm-size huge, and deliciously crisp too. <br/><br/>The quesadillas were the best dishes out of the four, although puzzlingly the prawn one I chose which had no chillis on the menu was slightly spicy (I think it's the cumin? I've never had cumin before so I'm not too sure, haha) but the mushrooms one had a chilli next to it on the menu but was not spicy at all and in fact was my favourite. Both were excellent dishes, with thin crispy well browned pancakes cut into segments and filled with delicious filling and served piping hot to the table. They also came with some spicy chutney-like sauces to dip the quesadillas in if you so desired. One of the prawn quesadillas had an entire ball of spice on it that burnt the tongue really badly though (we went through like two huge bottles of their water) so that was kind of disappointing and now I'm a bit mistrustful of the menu. The mushroom quesadilla, however, was cheesy, full of yummy mushrooms, and just in general delicious whether hot or cold. <br/><br/>This isn't the place for a quiet demure chat unless you go during a lazy sunny afternoon, and you often have to wait ages for a table past 6.30pm, but the decor was really interesting and screamed Mexico. I really like how everything can be shared though, and the quesadillas are a must try in my opinion. Just beware of the cumin rubbed prawn ones!
