Review Alice May - Franz Josef

Shirish Paranjape
My wife and I had dinner here on two consecutive nights. In the first visit, we had: - garlic bread - mains vegetarian soup (pumpkin and carrot) - mains vegan yellow curry The garlic bread was simply superb! The soup was good. The curry was tasty and flavoursome but quite thick. The service was good too. We decided to visit the next night too, when we had: - garlic bread (as good as yesterday’s!) - sticky toffee pudding (dessert) - chocolate fudge cake (dessert) We skipped the mains but it turned out to be very satisfying meal, nevertheless. The staff on both evenings were excellent. We will be happy to have a meal here again and recommend it to anyone.

We spent only one night in Franz Josef and Alice May was the only restaurant we dined in for dinner, therefore it would not be fair to say it was the best in town, but it was definitely a very good restaurant with fair prices. Service was friendly and portion was good. Read the Alice May story, drink the Alice May ale while waiting for your food.

Stopped in for a quick dessert after we’d eaten dinner elsewhere. The apple and blackberry pie (pictured here) was excellent. Based on the looks of the menu, I’m sure dinner or lunch are also devine. Worth the visit.

Must try in Franz Josef! We ordered lamb shank, chicken breast and seafood chowder. All tasted great, especially the lamb shank. Tenderness is just nice. Even the side vegetables on the plates tasted delicious. Service staff were polite and cheerful. We were a little early for dinner so the place was empty but people started to come in after 6pm. We are glad we tried this on our last night here!

I don't normally eat eggs, but I got the whitebait omelette and it was one of the best things I've had all trip. Very rich and cheesy but light and fluffy. The garlic bread was also amazing. The staff were super friendly and helpful. To really take it to the next level I recommend adding mushroom and bacon sauce instead of aioli.

Excellent place in FJ, don’t skip the chance to try their burgers, just amazing. Best meal we had in FJ, strongly recommend. Atmosphere is also great, blue & jazz softly in the background, you can keep talking, no need for yelling 😉. Yes, and prices are decent as well. Almost forgot!! The deserts are as great as the main meals!

Take your appetite and DEFINITELY get dessert. The sticky toffee pudding could not be faulted. Apple and blackberry pie was also delicious. Unfortunately my pasta was a bit undercooked, so couldn't give food a 5 star. The prawns were perfection though! A fascinating story behind the name of the restaurant which made for interesting reading and table conversation.

Seating outside offers views of the glacier and people taking pictures of said glacier in the middle of the street. The food was delicious with huge portions. The fish from the fish and chips was massive. The shrimp spaghetti was very tasty as well. Throw in a cold drink and you're good to go. While you wait you can read about Alice May. Recommended.

What a lovely hidden gem! Fantastic service, great food, and fab atmosphere! We just had the rustic chips, and the apple and blackberry pie (shared both) and both were super yummy!

Alice May is an absolute must when exploring NZ's west coast. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a delicious menu to choose from. I would highly recommend the tender "melt in your mouth" beef cheeks! Can't wait to go back!

Had dinner there last night. Bangers & mash for myself &a chicken red curry for my wife. Both meals were excellent. Service was great & everything priced reasonable. I would definitely recommend stopping there for a meal.

A very cosy restaurant in Franz Josef. I enjoyed the braised beef cheeks and Pavlova for dessert. The staff are enthusiastic and friendly.

Warm and welcoming after a long drive. Waiter was very friendly, excellent service. Lamb shank was very tasty with lots of gravy. Good value considering the location. Would come back.

I had venison sausages, mash potatoes and peas with gravy. It was very good and just what I needed on this cold and very wet day.

Avoid at all costs! The waitress took a mandatory 30% tip from our bill tending us the remaining change.. Quite shocking
