Under the management of new owners the Drifters continues to draw in the crowds with excellent food, great ambience and some very fine musicians from time to time. As a regular visitor to Granity I am delighted that this iconic restaurant has been spruced up and has such friendly hosts. I will keep coming!

Attention! If you are a foreign customer who just walks in and expects nothing bad to happen - beware: I ordered something to eat - pretty much on the high priced side, with $22 for a high quality Fish&Chips meal that would actually also include a salad, thinking that it would be good for the Café to have some business. I also asked for "local beer", expecting something from the west coast - in a Café that was that much hyped. I was recommended an "Emmersons".
Not only did I have to find out that the beer was actually from Dunedin, I was also charged $13 for one 0.5l bottle of beer at this café. I was not warned about the price beforehand. There were no price tags visible, nor could I find the price on the menu. When wondering, staff said "I am not trying to rip you off, mate. This is New Zealand, we are next to Russia." When I asked what this would mean, there was something like "Ah, you know, with taxes and all.".
When I returned the next day to complain about the overcharging, the barman simply said "Goodbye" and disappeared into the kitchen.

Even though the bar man at first impression had a friendly chat with me, it appears this only served the purpose to identify foreigners and set them apart from locals - who are maybe not that easily overcharged or played games with.

I can only warn you against buying from this Café.

Recently a group of 16 fellow walkers who were staying the area of Granity had a buffet meal at Drifters Cafe. I cant say enough about the service, buffet meal, the entertainment (karoke). It was all superb. They are wonderful hosts and chefs too and we all had so much fun. Dont miss it! OUr group is still talking about it.
