Review The Speight's Ale House - Greymouth

This was the second time we've eaten here (and the second time in Greymouth). We came here about 10 years ago on our first trip to New Zealand and remembered how much we loved the food, so when we ended up staying in Greymouth again this trip we made sure to go back again. The food and sevice were just as good as we remembered - I had the crispy pork belly this time and a lamb dish the last time. I would definitely come back if Im ever in Greymouth again.

Came here for dinner with my family while in Greymouth. A must to stop by when in Greymouth! Lovely atmosphere, superb food and dessert, polite and efficient service crew! I love that the interior had old photos of Greymouth so you can really see how the town has changed over time. They have their own distillery as well! I didn’t have time to check that out, which was a pity! I hope this place stays around for a long time to come. Will definitely be back here :)

Great food with fast service and comfortable and spacious rest. Many kind of wines and beers from the region and all New Zealand.

We had heard great reviews about the hotel and witnessed it first hand. The meals were fantastic and plenty of it, but all good what we could not eat was put into a doggy bag. The menu had a wide variety and was reasonably priced. John Matchett and his wife to be , have worked very hard to have every thing looking spotless . The toilets were exceptionally clean .

UPDATED JUNE 2023 YET AGAIN OUR MEALS WERE PERFECT. (Can't seem to add the latest pics). -My top pick for our visit to Greymouth. I would award this place 10/10☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ Everything was perfect, The meal and the service was fantastic. Highly recommended you eat here,its well worth it.

Some good and some less good. We started with the pesto garlic sweet chili bread and it was great. Sweet chili was an odd flavor but my companions liked it. I had the triple cheeseburger which was very good. Like the rest of nz your burger comes well done and if you don’t like it you can go pound sand. Good burger though. Chicken burger was delicious. Ham and cheese with pineapple was an abomination. The barbecue sauce is detrimental to the flavor and not listed on the menu. Sandwich could be otherwise solid. Fries came out so hot i thought they were cooked on the surface of the sun but were high quality. Would eat here again

We went to the Montieths Bar and decided against it. Came to the competitor and realised we’d made a good decision. Sat in the bar (the restaurant was full), watched the cricket on the telly and had two good meals (pictured)

Exceptionally well. I don't drink beer and I wasn't expecting much from a pub but this place made my day. We got the wedges to be safe. They were crispy, spiced, mixed with melted cheese and salted with bacon. We ordered grilled fish, it was a real fresh fish cooked just perfect.

What a neat little place. Would definitely go there again. We got the shared platter with fried goodies...yummy. enough for two for sure.

Wow! is what you say when you walk into the Hotel, this place is amazing and the food OMG!! Gotta go there 😋 staff were very helpful and made us feel very welcome!!

One of the most satisfying meals I had for my tour of South Island. What an amazing value of money. After a drive of over 3 hours a beautiful hearty lunch we had. From a traditional Caesar chicken salad to an extraordinary Loaded wedges and delightful Chicken Parmigiani. 😍🤩😍 Beautiful house Pinot noir. Staff was very welcoming and ensured we were comfortably seated before placing the order. An amazing experience and very well prepared 👏 meals. Well done team.😁😇👍 A must visit when in Greymouth!

Ok NZ, I am back. The Cranky Canberra Bus Driver. Its been 6 months, I am ready to review again. This is the 2nd Speights Ale House we have done. Again great food, nice friendly atmosphere, fantastic staff. But....... only one problem. You had "Red stag timber hunters club" on the TV. The Cranky Canberra Bus Driver say NO! To the shooting of stags during meal time, I like to enjoy my meal rather than see where it comes from. I am having Bambi flashbacks now. Got to go, got leave town, I have angered some stag hunters and have a target on my back. Bye til next time.

Jumped off the Tranzalpine train, ran across the road, downed a delicious creamy seafood chowder and a beer with time to catch the train back. Was perfect!

Had dinner here during our stay. Delicious meals but far too much. Also disappointed to see waitress putting out cutlery using her fingers touching the parts that go into our mouths. Not a good look. However lovely atmosphere and service was great.

Food was good, fairly expensive, customer service was average at best, didn't exactly feel welcome. The low jazz is a turn off, would rather hear the rugby commentary. Still enjoyed none the less.

Lovely large portions of food for the very hungry. The pork belly was delicious.

Dined whilst on holidays. had 3 nights in Greymouth, this dinner was the best. warm atmosphere welcoming staff and good food,

My partner and I have just eaten at The Speights Ale House in Greymouth and are so disappointed. After waiting an hour and a half for our meals, mine arrived cold. I had ordered the Kai Moana, a selection of seafood in a filo basket. Horrible. 2 scallops a couple if chunks of cold cod served with a pile if chewy cold rice. This meal cost $29!! My partner ordered a chicken fettucini dish which was warmer than mine but swimming in centimetres of oil and definitely not worth it's price. Disappointing.

We went for a drink on Anzac afternoon and wasn't going to eat there due to the previous review but after seeing that they had a four star rating from another website we felt it was worth a try as I have eaten in several Speights Ale Houses in the past and haven't had a bad experience yet. <br/>The staff were pleasant and a pleasure to have serve us. The food was also nice with my seven year old commenting that his burger was better than a certain major takeaway chain that starts with M. Personally I don't think it's that hard to beat a burger from them but to get a ten out of ten from a seven year old is a pretty big recommendation. All in all it was a a enjoyable meal. If I had any criticism it would be the disappointment in finding out my sticky date pudding wasn't homemade.... It was nice but could have been better. Well done and we will definitely eat here again.

Really really terrible. Went to enjoy lunch on a sunny afternoon, I ordered a chicken burger, and my companion ordered the fish and chips. Why did you cover EVERYTHING in parsley, and not just a little bit of it either? The burger was tasteless and soggy, I have had nicer from a decent takeaway. The fish and chips were greasy and had been over cooked, especially the fish. Can't believe we paid $65 for what we got. The only nice thing was the garlic loaf. Won't be coming back again.

Probably the worst experience I have had eating out. The one male waiter seemed to be doing all the work whilst the female staff just stood around talking. <br/><br/>I was horrified at food they gave me for the price I paid. I ordered a medium rare steak and it came back well done. The potatoes were so spicy they were inedible- I'm guessing the chef wasn't tasting them as he added in white pepper. And the vegetables were clearly out of a bag and uncooked.<br/><br/>Big rip off in my opinion.

Lovely Restaurant a nice atmosphere. Toilets were clean the staff were friendly - although the waitress did not know what veges were with a meal when we asked (but soon found out) We did not have to wait very long for our meals, which were cooked to perfection and looked great on the plate, good size servings too. Thanks heaps, we will be a repeat customer.

Plus - the meals were prompt, and some were good.<br/>The minus - the service was shocking, the entrance/reception was unwelcoming, the staff dont know how to smile, and some of the meals were crap. We wont be going back, what is it about the NZ hospitality and tourism industry that we accept mediocrity!

wow wont be going back there again.<br/>The food was bad!!!!<br/>Bacon &amp; liver dry.<br/>The med steak was RARE then we were argued with and only offer $6 off even tho only 1/4 was eating BY THE BIRTHDAY GIRL, and on top only told as ordering the no longer do mains for birthday special freebie.<br/>Service s**t stand around talking, dont clear the table! dont offer to top drinks up, we go so sick of waiting after we asked for table to be cleared! that we left with out dessert so they missed out on making more money out of us via dessert and drinks!<br/>Won't go back rather just get fish N chips next birthday bash then go to the much mroe friendly railway pub.

Just been to the Greymouth Speights Ale House for the last time<br/><br/>The service was appalling at best.<br/><br/>Waited an hour and a half for our meals which arrived in staggered formation and half of them were cold. <br/><br/>They lost the ticket and then when told how bad the service was, we were given a look that said why would we care.<br/><br/>Will never go back, recommend noone goes there

I tried to dine in and was greeted by a young man who was very unhelpful! We needed a high chair and the one they had was being used and there was abosoultely no effort made to try and put together a make-shift one. The guy was rude when I asked for help again and came across arogant and dismisive. I wrote to the owner in August and have still had no reply. Very poor service and attention indeed!

Having dined in 5 star restaurants here and overseas, I would have to say that my recent experience at this restaurant was exceptional. From the ambience of the restored facility to the service and meal, it was faultless and probably one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I would highly recommend that everyone makes this a 'must do' on their visit to Greymouth.
