Review Salute Restaurant - Greytown

Chantelle Nunez
SO MANY gluten-free options, and also lots of dairy free and vegetarian options. This place is INCREDIBLE! Unfortunately my photos don't do it justice. The pork belly tapas (generous serving, by the way) was perfectly crispy and tender with such a divine sauce. The side of vegetables was a great assortment of in-season produce that was perfectly cooked. For dessert I had the ultimate brownie sundae that came with the most amazing textured and flavoured treats (including coffee cacao nib ice-cream, chocolate marshmallow, a raspberry crispy thing, coated hazelnuts, etc). The petits I tasted were also 10/10 including the 'sweet Kenny' lemon pudding, ras-el-hanout fudge, s'more, blackberry pastille (might have some spelling issues in this sentence, haha). I LOVE this place. And the service was friendly, helpful and fast. Even enjoyed the privilege of meeting the genius lovely owners.

We came in at late notice and were warmly welcomed in by the maitre d. After getting seated we discussed cocktails and took our hosts advice and the cocktails were great! We then moved in to the menu and while choosing our favourites of pork belly and arancini we again asked for advice and chose the polenta as Rapa and added a pizza too. The food was fantastic, it came out quickly and it was beautiful. We're definitely coming here again soon, only next time we'll remember how efficient the chef was and take a little more time to enjoy the atmosphere!

Went on Valentines night, very good service food excellent. A bit short of room for all the delicious food on the high tables. Will book earlier in advance next time. We will also order the lemon fritters that had been recommended to the very friendly couple on the next table and looked amazing. We'll remember to leave room for a pudding on our next visit. We will become regulars now we live near by.

This place has always been good, but just keeps getting better every visit. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, delicious tapas and pizzas, great for sharing. Excellent wine. It has a modern European vibe without feeling pretentious. Also make sure you save room for dessert. The bread pudding with pumpkin icecream was incredible.

A lovely dinner at Salute last night. Lucy was our waitress and was great! We questioned her on many things (not all related to the menu or her job😊), and she was fun and friendly. Also, although a small wine list, it is very nice and well balanced. Very nice to meet the owner and hear his story of their start with Salute, the menu and wines etc. Will definitely be back.

We had the most enjoyable dinner at Salute last week. We asked our waiter for a few recommendations for the tapas and they turned out to be great choices. We chose three dishes to share - beef cheek, crispy lamb and cauliflower. A wonderful combination of flavours and textures and the servings were more than adequate. In fact, just perfect. Good selection of drinks. Beautiful desserts. The lemon fritters were amazing! Our waiter was friendly and professional. The overall service was excellent. A highlight of our short stay in Greytown!

Day tripping to Greytown we walked in off the street to a very gracious welcome. I know Salute is very busy so it was a bonus to be seated so quickly. The menu was exciting, the baked goat cheese was out the gate fantastic. Great service. Delicious all round.

My partner, friends, and I spent the day in Greytown on the weekend and chose to eat at Saluté. Yum, yum, YUM! Saluté has amazing food and fantastic staff and owners too! The locals are super lucky to have this restaurant on their doorstep and it is totally worth the trip for those from out of town. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting great food, great people, and a great experience.

Quality food, would definitely recommend the arancini and pizza

A great Tapas restaurant in beautiful Greytown. We traveled over from Wellington and thoroughly enjoyed our experience (it was my birthday). Staff were very good, helpful, cheerful. Food is excellent with lots of options. Top marks.

We are foodies and during our (too short) visit to NZ we found Salute! To our delight, the proprietor Ken Miller spent time with us sharing his story, making recommendations and generally showing us true hospitality. Having spent over 20 years in hospitality myself, I always appreciate meeting another person who has the same heart for service that I do. The food at Salute is wonderful -- thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented and fairly priced. The small, intimate atmosphere is cozy and welcoming and the staff is friendly too. Great experience overall!

What a beautiful accident it was to find this gem of a restaurant! We headed out with the intention of dining elsewhere, but then we spotted Saluté and decided to check out their menu! It’s not often you find somewhere that can cater to both someone who is plantbased and the other allergic to nuts! We not only struggled to decide with all the delicious options we could share, but we also received the most attentive service and recommendations from all wait staff and Kenny ‘Sweet Cakes’ (one the owners) himself. We loved the food, ambience and staff so much we came back the following day to try another delightful meal. Would definitely recommend to everybody, and will be back again! A highlight of our trip :)

Absolutely amazing food and wonderful friendly staff. We were made to feel so welcome and all dietary requirements were accommodated for. We will definitely be back as there was so much we wanted to try on the menu. The locals should be so happy to have this gem on there doorstep.

Very nice Mediterranean tapas restaurant, right in the centre of Greytown. Great food quality and presentation, everything we ordered from the menu tasted amazing. Owners and staff very friendly and keen to make your visit enjoyable. A very memorable experience, will definitely be back to try out some of the other dishes. Advisable to book ahead though!

Just thought I'd jump online to give a 5 star rating after seeing Ken on the project last night...... just to find that I already had 10 months ago. I'd just like to say that my wife and I head over to Greytown regularly, and Saluté is by far our favourite place to dine. Ken and the staff are brilliant! Always accommodating and very friendly. Oh, and the food is great aswell. A++++++

My daughter and I have just enjoyed a lovely meal at your restaurant! We would like to thank you for having extremely pleasant and helpful staff, providing wonderful tapas and wine and for making our time in Greytown memorable! I will be returning to N.Ireland shortly, whilst my daughter will be remaining in NZ and be fortunate enough to visit your restaurant again! Totally recommend it!!

We love this place! The food is off-the-hook great, the service is excellent, and the owners are endlessly charming. Recommend highly. <3

Dinner from the Tapas menu last night - the food is wonderful tasty full of flavour and beautifully presented. For the non- alcohol drinkers the kombucha is lovely - ginger being my favourite delicious and goes really well with food on a summer night. Great range of wines. Thank you from Sally Sonja and Trudi

The flavour explosions! Everything we had was wonderous to eat Full credit to your amazing chefs oh and the service was good too

We have been here many times. The food is outstanding. Love the tapas. Unfortunately on our most recent trip the local pinot noir we ordered was very warm.... I tried to review on trip advisor and it looks like I was unhappy with the $68 price tag but it was the temperature of the wine that was an issue. Not good enough for a restaurant of this standard and unfortunate for the local winery to have their product displayed in this way. I'm sure it would have tasted much better at a suitable temp.

What a find!! This happened to be our second choice for eating...thank goodness. We had arancini balls, Halloumi, pork belly, green beans, ceispy lamb and rocket salad. Delicious each and every one. Absolute recommend. Make sure you book. We are about to try dessert. The owners are friendly and so personable. Lovely to meet and eat here.

Went there for lunch. Had a Harira soup which had too much lemon juice, too much coriander, too much everything. Followed by the worst pizza in living memory. My wife and daughter had a chicken salad that tasted like it had been doused in lemon juice and vinegar. Just a terrible dining experience. Avoid

I love driving out to Greytown for Sunday brunch at Salute! The French toast is dynamite! I also love the doughnuts filled with cream and blackberry jam. I've been there many times for dinner too so I recommend the citrus cured salmon, halloumi, the kumara falafel, and Moroccan soup! I've had a different dessert each time and they are all excellent! The wine selection is top notch and the good service is appreciated.

Stayed in Greytown for one night and went to Saluté for dinner. The service was fantastic. They only had a table outside and it was p*ssing it down but the heaters were brilliant and we were very comfortable.

We shared the halloumi to start, had a pizza each and then the autumn tiramisu. Delicious from start to finish.

Had a great meal of tapas: duck risotto, arranchini, salmon, slaw. Lovely flavours. Desserts were: chocolate tart, pears and donuts. Only negative was the slow service.

Came through on our way back from Napier and after a weekend of overindulgence my appetite was starting to recover. Started with an iced chocolate then ordered Arancini and a blue cheese, bacon and pear pizza. The goodies arrived very smartly and could not be faulted, very tasty! Keen to return as there is a comprehensive menu to work through, not to mention we didn't get dessert and no doubt there will be some delicious offerings. Service was quick and friendly, The restaurant is also in the Entertainment book which is a bonus.

Lovely meal and good service. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. Both people I dined with were very happy with their meals also. Highly recommended

Had a superb meal at Salute last evening. We started with the onion olive and anchovy flatbread, which was generous and tasty, then had the pork belly main dish. It was very tasty and original- beautifully presented with lovely fresh and interesting flavours. The desserts were amazing - we had the lemon fritters and the mousse. Would absolutely recommend eating here! Service friendly. And helpful.

Toast Martinborough weekend and we decided to make a tour through the townships of Waiarapa. Greytown was the first stop and it was buzzing. We walked from one end of the Main Street to the other, peering at the menus on the windows to figure out what tickled our fancy. We eventually settled upon Salute - mainly because it offered things different from the normal run of the mill eggs benedict and sausages.

The wait staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and seeing as there were a few seats free as it was only early noon, we were allowed to pick a table - a comfy window seat which backed out onto an open window. I really liked the indoor-outdoor flow that Salute had and there was a certain charm to having a few sparrows ducking in and out. I was pleased to note that there were no bird droppings in sight.

Coffees came first. I was really happy with my long macchiato but unfortunately, my partner's long black was a little burnt.

For food, we settled on four tapas as recommended by our waiter, which turned out to be a really good amount of food:
- aracini: crispy risotto balls filled with braised pork, mozzarella and garlic aioli: this is lovely. I really enjoyed the creaminess of the aioli and pork inside was really tender. The coating provided a good texture that contrasted with the soft melted cheese
- crispy fried lamb, warm chickpea purée, almonds, currants and pickled quince with chargrilled flatbread: the lamb wasn't really crispy, but the flavours of the lamb combined with all the elements on the dish made it outstanding. The flatbread was delicious
- Moroccan spiced crispy pork belly with pomegranate, chilli and lime drizzle: pork belly is not exactly the healthiest thing but no one cares when it's been cooked this way because it was fantastic. Crisp and well flavoured, the sauce provided some sweetness and tartness to the dish. This was definitely my favourite
- mussels with vinegar, crisps, currants and pickled onion: this was quite a refreshing dish to the other rather heavier tasting dishes that we got. It wasn't outstanding but then again, this is in comparison to some other fattier dishes and oil always wins out

I really enjoyed my lunch here. Service was fantastic and the dishes were original and well cooked. We noticed on the way out the several awards from the Cuisine awards - and that came at no surprise to us. This is a dining gem in the Waiarapa.

Been here a few times, have always loved the experience. The food is always memorable and the service is great! Love coming here for a lovely date night sharing their amazing tapas. Defiantly suggest the Arancini, crispy fried chicken and the best dessert i've had in a very long time, the creme brûlée! 😍 The wine is always great and never leave without having a classic Japanese Slipper Cocktail. 👌🏻

I've dined here several years ago and re-visited the past weekend on our way home after a weekend away. The service is still professional and courteous. The food is the best in Greytown. Our entrees were good - I recommend the duck risotto. The fresh fish was outstanding. Loved the celeriac puree with Mediterranean flavours. The beef filet was fine. The wine list is decent. Overall a solid dining experience.

Perhaps one of the best Wairarapa restaurants. Set on the Main Street in Greytown, it is unmissable. When open in summer there will be diners sitting under the trees next door or on the verandah at front.

Salute is one of those places a small town is very lucky to have. Since the end of the Campbell's French restaurant in Martinborough or the demise of Wakelin House, Salute is one of the last bastions of really good food in the Wairarapa. A varied and interesting menu quite different from anything in the Wellington region - Moroccan overtones but with a fusion edge - this is somewhere to drive to.
The dish that symbolises Salute for me is the lemon beignets ( they have another name for them I know) - sharply acidic little doughnuts that are one of life's memorable little snippets.
Run by good people with a passion for food Salute is a Wairarapa food destination that I can highly recommend.

It seemed this particular visit to Wairarapa was more about the pork belly than sampling the gorgeous local wines but when things present themselves to you as the pork belly seemed to do, I'd say go with it. It was a no-brainer, really.

Actually would give this place 2 and a 1/2 stars - not poor but not average either - barely satisfactory is more accurate.

The service was slow and unfriendly and the food was not value for money, very small portions and only middle of the road.

I would not go be in a hurry to go back.

Wonderful place. The service is great, very attentive but not too much. Wonderful atmosphere and the food is fabulous! The duck risotto tapas is yum but to be honest, all of the tapas are! Great wine selection as well.

We ate here as part of a large group, and the service and food were absolutely amazing. The waiter was really knowledgeable, and helpful, and had that unique skill of giving us just the right amount of attention without being in our face.

We ate a selection of tapas, and they just kept them coming, the flavours were amazing, and we had some beautiful wines by the glass and bottle. It was a very memorable evening, and all our party were very happy campers at the end of the evening.

I highly recommend Salute - their reputation is well deserved!

Discovered Salute on a Labour Weekend in the Wairarapa, and what a find. Decor is fun, a stylishly Latin vibe. Service is slick with great attention to detail, and the food.....stunning. Tapas can either be truly divine, or a cheap way of bars knocking out reheated rubbish - this was certainly the former. Flavours well balanced, an interesting mix of meat, veggie and fishy options and pizzas for the kids - so everyone was happy. Superb wine list, even by the glass it's great. This is a restaurant doing what it does really well - lucky Greytown!

I've eaten here several times over the past few years, but this was the first time with my husband. We enjoyed a lazy, sunny lunch on a Saturday last month and had the best Duck Risotto complete with "Quackling" - YUM! Great vibe, nice friendly service and always great offerings on the tapas menu! Awesome.

Enjoyed a fantastic lunch with a friend at Salute yesterday. Tapa's were up to there usual high standard. Always a great place to dine.

Always enjoy Salute. Good food and service. Good price and selection as well.

Now running as tapas bar (with pizzas). Do not take reservations. Interesting menu, lots to try, brought out in batches as in Spanish tapas bars, excellent place to go as a group to share lots of dishes. Everything we tried was really nicely cooked and well presented. We ordered too much food, cost about $55 per person including a couple of drinks. We will definitely be going back.
