A truly enjoyable and memorable meal. The service was superb, the food delicious and the local Pinot noir a perfect choice. And we almost didn't go because I didn't feel like pizza! We had eggplant parmigiana and the heavenly rosemary roast potatoes.

Absolutely delicious food, the rosemary potatoes were divine. Booked to come back next week.

I’ve had dinning experiences in various parts of the world, from very authentic, raw and family owned to high end dining so when I say this I really mean it that this place has something very special about it It has the ambiance of a house and dining hall, the service was great and i believe it’s a family run and owned operation they really put their heart and thought into the service and food they prepared. The pizzas are great, thin crest just how I like it. The candles and very home like Interior really adds to the mood of the place The space is not huge but just right and intimate. Will definitely visit there again. Thankyou for the good food and service.

Heard an amazing Word. Loved praising the Lord with the congregation. There was terrific ministry to people, praying for specific needs. Experienced the movement of the Spirit in that place. Most people smiled and welcomed me warmly!

Went for dinner on a busy Saturday night and the food was spectacular. Delicious pizzas that were full of flavour and thoughtfully designed. Despite being very busy the service was superb and extremely friendly. Would definitely go again!

Lovely venue, quirky vintage house, nice staff. A little bit of a wait for our pizzas but very impressive when arrived. The Regular is super large and the Large is huge! My Pear and Blue Cheese pizza was delicious.

Great little restaurant. We enjoyed our pizzas and puddings. Well curated compact selection of wines.

Just had the best meal ever at Cuckoo. Everyone there was very nice, the service was prompt and the food was Amazing!! The drinks menu was extensive but we were blown away by the home brewed Kombucha, easily the best we’ve had so we got two bottles to take home. Can’t recommend enough :-)

Great thin crust pizza and flatbreads in a comfy little location, recommend the tables out back if the weather will allow it. An interesting wine list as well, and my brother swears by the eggplant parmesan.

Thank you to Ian, Janelle and staff for accommodating our staff leaving party at their wonderful restaurant. As always wonderful food and a lovely environment. And a special thank to our waitress for her patience. It goes without saying that we will be back. Thanks guys!

I have never eaten a poor quality dinner at Cuckoo. The lovely old house has a homey atmosphere and indeed run by the owner/ cook Ian and his wife Janelle. I call Ian a cook as his homemade oven fired pizza's and lasagna plus potatoes cooked in duck fat to mention a few remind me of home cooking at its best. Desserts are delicious as well. As pizzas are made to order they can take a while but well worth the wait in this family run restaurant.

Beautiful pizza!!... And the portions were perfect. The price of the pizza was a little expensive, but it seems to be a family business and the pizza was worth every cent! There was quite a long delay for our food, but again, totally worth the wait!

Really good pizza! Nice wine, and apple pie was great! 'regular' pizza is enough for two people, especially if you get a starter and intending on getting a dessert!

Cosy restaurant

This cosy little restaurant is in a converted house with a real wood fireplace which makes it a lovely spot to have dinner on a winters evening. We ordered a pasta and the eggplant parmigiana for dinner - both meals were delicious but we thought that the portions were a little on the small side!

Always a pleasure - fantastic pizzas and excellent service. Very convenient as a takeaway treat as there aren't many places nearby you can get takeaways in Greytown and this good as well.

This place is so cosy and sweet - literally a converted house. Came on a Saturday night and found service to be extremely friendly and fast. There was a great variety of pizza flavours and they didn't disappoint! Crispy base and tasty toppings. Great that you get the choice of small/medium/large or large half and half. Worth stopping for if you're passing through!

Paid a visit to Cuckoo with three kids in tow (two teens and a 9 year old). The smell of wood fire pizza lured us in!

Two shared a large pizza which was ENORMOUS. Plenty for left overs the next day. Other half enjoyed a vegetable stack but they forgot to supply the salad promised on the menu which was a disappointment.

I and another child had a small pizza each which were a decent size and very tasty.

When the wait person came to check it was too late to redress the missing salad issue so they supplied a desert free of charge to compensate.

Nice cosy cafe with good service.

Cuckoo has a long and important place in greytowns culinary scene. Prior to being cuckoo it was a special cafe which was going to be a hard act to follow. The young first owners set the pizza menu, nicely giving each type a bird name, and creating what was clearly the best pizzas (as well as pasta) in the region. When the second owners took over we held our breath - would they get rid of the old favourites - fortunately they didn't - sensible - but instead added cheesecakes as well! I'm not sure as to the sense but I'm sure some people like cheesecake - personally I loath the creatures.
Recently under third ownership and now with the old villa hemmed in by a newly built real estate agents, the breath holding occurred again. And once more the pizzas with the ornithological names remain safe.
Service is good, relaxed and friendly. The beer list is getting better with each owner. The pizzas are the same if not better. My favorite has always been the albatross - a rare smoked fish pizza that I sometimes recreate at home. Blackbird is also delicious. The potato pizza last time I had it could do with a little more salt - or preferably capers and anchovies otherwise it can be a bit bland. The new owners may have adjusted that however.
The restaurant is in a rumpty old student villa that could have been shipped up from the Dunedin campus. Highly recommended for the pizzas.

Great pizzas, lovely staff. Pity the $10 corkage PER BOTTLE is at the top end of the scale.

Lunch at Cuckoo calls for some tough decisions: pizza or pasta? Daily specials board or extensive menu? We started off with coffee then chose pasta dishes. I had chicken and bacon pasta with sun dried tomatoes and parmesan in a creamy sauce - delicious! I really appreciated being able to have spaghetti in place of fettuccine - all part of the excellent service. Cuckoo's decor is quirky and spread out in an old homestead. There is plenty to look at, from brightly decorated walls, old fashioned chandeliers and butterfly-adorned toilets. Our only regret is that we were too full from our main course to enjoy dessert. Never mind - next time!

I visited Cuckoo for a special romantic dinner on a whim, and was delightfully rewarded. The theme of the place is wonderfully kiwi tearooms with a wedge of Alice in Wonderland.
The fantastic marinated olives (in caraway and orange zest) were grand, served in a dainty gold leafed tea cup. The heartwarming lasagne was a generous serve and probably the best one I have ever had! The wine listed reflected the italian influences of the menu, as well as the local wairarapa location. Candle light guided through a spectacular pizza, half and half with great flavours available, on a traditional thin base so not to leave you too full for the vast array of house-made cheesecakes available - we took ours home for supper.
The service was heartwarming, attentive and they are real locals, these guys care about making your experience great.
I am taking a crew from work for a small do next week, as the converted old villa has many separated areas for dining, both small and intimate, as well as roomy.
I think some '50's or 60's pop music would compliment the place really well tho. That's the only thing.
We had a great experience and at a very resonable price - note, very good value wine list! Bargains!

This is a great cafe, our favourite in Greytown. Fantastic pizzas and yum sticky date pudding! Try the delicious breakfast pizza. Interesting decorations. Has a fire going in winter and alfresco dining in summer. Sit and watch the world go by!
