Lovely food, lovely staff. Beautiful place to eat with both indoor and outdoor dining. Highly recommended if you will look for a nice place to eat in Greytown.

Great place to have lunch. Cozy atmosphere

Lovely café and very friendly, helpful staff. I enjoyed eggs in toast for breakfast and was given a little jug of olive oil to replace the butter. There was not a lot of dairy free options in the delicious array of counter food, but they offered to prepare something.

Main Street Deli has been feeding locals and visitors to Greytown for as long as I can remember. The outdoor garden area has been tidied up and is a relaxing place to enjoy coffee and food. My cheese scone was quite tasteless today but I enjoyed the chocolate chip muffin. Great service.

This was some of the best food I have had in a long, best chi latte I’ve had in my life. The kitchen food was amazing with lots of flavour, the service was amazing I had this wonderful waitress I think her name was Caitlin, she had delightful attitude and was very friendly, overall 10/10

Beautiful cafe. Great food. Music could be turned down but otherwise a wonderful blessing 🙌

Lovely earthy atmosphere on a sunny Saturday. Sat in the ooen back coutyard. Lots of sweet & savoury food options. Counter service was busy and cold. Ordered a hot choc, mocha and a spinach & cream cheese muffin. We waited over 45 minutes before the lad clearing tables noticed we hadn't received it, and followed up. It was out 5 minutes later. He was a friendly hard working lad who gave personality to the deli. Thank you. The mocha was flavourless - could not taste the kawhe or the chocolate. Muffin was tasty with a good amount of cream cheese. It was that good, i wish i hadn't offered half to my partner!

Very lovely atmosphere and food is superb as always. Love the seafood chowder which has been a long time favourite of The Deli. A touch of health giving Tumeric to change it up. Coffee was devine and hot, great for a cool winters day. Well done to the team.

Located in a lovely old timber building right on Greytown’s main street (as you’d expect from the café’s name!) this is a great place to stop for a snack on your way to points north or for a break during a shopping spree. You can choose to sit at a wrought iron table out on the footpath, find a corner inside the building, or relax in the shady courtyard out the back. I can confirm that the Eggs Benedict at the Main Street Deli are absolutely spectacular. The coffee, too, is very, very good.

Great food very tasty and awesome atmosphere. Any chnace you could allow some breakfast items on the lunch menu such as the Benny or a smashed avo?

Updated for 2023, steak sandwich (from the lunch menu) is delicious. Yummy breakfasts are until 11:30am and great coffee. Consistently good food and atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Four of us came for breakfast on Sunday 14 July. We chose a table and then ordered our food. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a chance to chat before the food and drinks arrived in a timely manner. We all made choices - the food was really great. When my sister asked for more toast and spread - this too arrived quickly. We asked the waitress what the new jam was - she didn’t know but came back straight away to tell us that it was made from Feijoas. We’d all go back again. I also selected 3 different pies from the cabinet for our dinner that night - they were all very tasty.

A must visit when in Greytown. Excellent coffee and a great menu with many favorites. I had seafood chowder and this was top notch. Many thankswill be back soon

Nine of us went for lunch today and what a disappointment. We waited for 40 minutes for our food and we were still starving hungry afterwards because the portions were tiny. And not cheap either! I asked for the wedges with bacon and cheese but asked them to hold the bacon. For $14 I got about 8 wedges with a drizzling of microwaved cheese and a tiny dollop of sweet chilli sauce. My sister in law asked for a side salad. She got a quarter slice of cucumber, three slithers of carrot and a leaf of lettuce. We will not be going here again. Such a shame as it is a great location and cute cafe. Overpriced and undelivered.

Their cabinet display has amazing selection of food from pies, salads and pastries, etc. We had breakfast here twice. Ordered their Poached eggs and chorizo on Moroccan flat bread. Definitely more exciting than your average eggs on toast. It was very tasty and reasonably priced. Service was quick and staff were friendly. Decor was very inviting and courtyard was a good place to catch up with friends/family. Best cafe in Greytown for sure. 😊🍴

Waiting ages for a venison and vegetable pie to the point my boyfriend had already finished his eggs Benedict. The waitress was very apologetic but then sadly they gave me the beef pie instead. She also stated that she would give me a free dessert as an apology but this was never followed up. Disappointing and wouldn't recommend

Having recently reopened after a refurb thought I would stop in for lunch on my through. On arrival I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff who looked to be run off their feet, headed for a table in the sun out the back. Was served promptly and ordered a soy latte and the corn fritters with bacon. The coffee came quickly and was very good, my fritters were well cooked and seasoned just so. The chutney served with them was excellent. All in all I would go back however wasn't a knock out

Went for brunch with three girlfriends on Sunday morning.  It was disastrous and probably one of the worst brunch experiences any of us had ever had.  Our waitress was so quiet and insipid it was actually uncomfortable trying to engage with her.  We ordered coffees first up, which were average at best.  Two of our party ordered a large size coffee and after a considerable wait we were told that 'they were just waiting on some people to finish their drinks so they could reuse the large cups'.  <br/><br/>Our first choice of meal (potato cakes with poached egg and smoked salmon) was unavailable due to the cafe running out of potato cakes.  We ordered our second choices and after at least a 40 minute wait we flagged down the waitress and asked her to check the status of our food order.  She said she thought it was coming soon and disappeared for another ten minutes.  No communication, no apologies when she eventually delivered our food - just placed on the table in silence.  The meals were abysmal - The eggs benedict was the worst I have ever seen served up in a cafe.  Two slices of white bread with anemic and grossly overcooked eggs and a slice of bacon dumped on top.  So bland and poorly presented, and badly cooked at that.  Corn fritters were dry and came sans the relish that was specifically asked about.  The mushrooms described in the other meal were missing from the plate with no explanation.   We ate some of the food only because we had been waiting so long we were starving.  <br/><br/>No salt and pepper on table.  No offer of water for the table. <br/><br/>We were looking forward to brunching out and felt completely disappointed.  It was such a lacklustre and quite frankly uncomfortable experience.  <br/><br/>We gave feedback to the lady at the front counter who to her credit handled it very well and seemed genuinely quite sad.  She explained that the business was being sold and the current owners were not stocking the place as it was being taken over on Tuesday.  Boy did that show, there was not an ounce of love in the place.   Perhaps this place will improve under new ownership but on the strength of my experience on Sunday I would advise against visiting the Main Street Deli.  Plenty of other good places to eat in the Wairarapa!

I dislike getting up early. I dislike feeling overly tired all day because I've had to wake at 4 to make a 6am flight. Usually what perks me up is a good coffee and a tasty breakfast. And that's what I had here. My coffee what very very good, and served quickly. I should have taken note of the brand of beans they used. My food, the Deli Breakfast, was excellent. Two poached eggs on toasted loaf a gorgeous sausage and lovely eye bacon. I wasn't expecting balsamic mushrooms but they were cut chunky how I like them. If I was a regular visitor to the Wairarapa I'd stop again and it looked better than the other places I past in Graytown. Very nice place, lovely people.

Rude service! The woman spotted us but continued washing windows but then sneered at us asking us (without greeting us) if we wanted menus and no eye contact!! This woman should be banned from service. No courtesy, no manners, no greeting. Wish I had read the reviews before taking my custom there. How do these people stay in business? I also went into the deli the day before and there was nobody to serve me and just about nothing in the chiller to choose from. Stay away peeps!

Great coffee, the cafe is nice and cosy.<br/><br/>Good food and the staff very accommodating.<br/>Making additions to my croissant and serving a delicious onion jam on the side.<br/><br/>I've stopped here a number of times over the last 3 years and this place is consistently good.

This place was recommended to me by my fiancee. We popped in just before Christmas while out for a drive over in the Wairarapa. The counter was busy so a staff member took the initiative to tell us to have a seat so she could take our order. We appreciated that. We opted to sit out the back under the verandah. The tables are large so we felt like we were across a tennis court from each other but we coped. We noted other customers commenting on the size of the furniture - it seemed large for the space. I had the eggs florentine - poached eggs &amp; spinach served on two muffins. It was cooked properly &amp; very tasty but for some reason I am not all that inspired to go back. I think this is because it was the only thing on the menu that appealed to me and I'm not fussed to have it again, and it seemed expensive for a small country town.

We had a large group, 6 adults &amp; 6 kids on a Sunday morning for brunch. The menu looked amazing, and we were expecting greatness.....<br/>The service was spectacular - our waitress couldn't have been any more helpful, she kept us mums calm when ordering for the kids who were over talking everyone else (other mums will understand) and made everything seem like it was easy and we were able to relax - YAY!<br/>But when the food came out, it was really disappointing :(<br/>Everything seemed quite bland and under seasoned. <br/>We ordered the macaroni cheese for the kids, and it would have been helpful if we had been told just how cheesey and "adultified" it was. None of the kids liked it, and instead opted for the wedges and chips that we had the foresight to order as well.<br/>2 of the group ordered the pie of the day, which was lamb and mint, and they were the only ones who really enjoyed their meals. The rest of us definitely had "food envy".<br/>We will return to give them a second chance, and really do hope that the reviews are taken on board and the issues rectified.<br/>All in all, it wasn't that bad, but I wouldn't be quick to recommend to anyone. <br/>Sorry :(

Went here in the weekend on the way back from the daffodil festival. Very disappointed. The lady at the counter was seriously so rude. When we were having a look at the counter food, she shouted at us in an uninviting tone "There are some menus behind you, go and take a seat". <br/><br/>When I was ordering, she must have misheard me and asked which item I wanted, so I had to point it out in the cabinet. Not a big deal, but just her attitude and tone was off - it sounded like she was blaming me for not saying the item correctly. <br/><br/>Also, once I paid for my food I wasn't sure if the food was going to be brought to me or if I had to wait? She just started taking the order from the next customer. <br/><br/>Food was heated in the microwave so when it arrived on the table it was rather soggy.<br/><br/>Won't be returning to this place in a hurry.

Food average, coffee average, service terrible. We asked for take away coffee, when I asked for sugar in the coffee the girl serving us heaped some angry spoonfuls in each cup, when I said thank you she didn't reply or look up at us. Will not go back.
Lesley Young
Tried deli on main st today, it was very crowded. No seats left but the woman at the counter took our order and then said we could go and wait on the outdoor deck - it was 8 degrees outside. We went back inside to wait near the counter and the woman who served us got antsy about it. In the end we asked for a refund. The woman that looked like the owner reluctantly gave us our money back. Slapping a smile on there faces would go a long way afterall they are in the service industry. Won't be returning regardless of their food.

Went there over the weekend and to be quite frank it was absolutely shocking. We were a large group and when we arrived the person was rude and rushed us to make our orders. The food was below average and even upon requesting something got the complete opposite. Gave us the wrong coffees. Everyone at the table got coffees and one person was left to wait an extra 10 minutes for them to bring it out. And when they brought it out the waitress said "you should have said you were waiting" as if to shift blame. YOU should have known when the order was placed!! Overall very average..been there a couple of times first was not that great either. Will not be in a particularly great rush to go back.

I don't know what all these bad reviews are about. I went to Greytown recently with my mother for a weekend stay over and we ate at the Deli the first afternoon we got there - and then they couldn't get rid of us! The food and service were both so great we just kept going back to the Deli (even after checking out a few other places) for pretty much Breakfast, Lunch and Tea.<br/>I loved it there. The coffees &amp; Hot chocolates were great - the food was really really yummy and sitting outside in the sun in their nice set up out the back was lovely too. The service was wonderful (partly why we went back so much - our waitress that first day was so nice and made such a good impression - her daughter was working there too and was great as well). Our visits there were the highlight of our trip! Nothing beats good food and good company.<br/><br/>Mum and I thought it was top notch all around :-)

I see some of the older reviews are not good, and I have to say that the service (and food) has improved a lot over the last year or two. I live locally (Featherston) and I do eat at the MSD now and again. I have noticed in the last year that the service is much improved (new owners?? I think so).<br/>Not many places make a decent Chai Soy Latte, and these people do.<br/>Yes, I will continue to eat there, and recommend it.

"What a pity people choose to remember anything bad, no matter how small...."<br/>I'm often reminded of this quote and it looks like it applies to Main St. Deli.<br/><br/>I eat here often (weekly) and find the food excellent - in preparation, taste and presentation. It's fresh, range is extensive and ample portions come from a busy kitchen.<br/><br/>The service is always courteous and unobtrusive. The staff are not equipped with paint - on smiles as is often the case elsewhere and (thankfully) don't wish me to "have a nice day"..<br/><br/>I'm happy to wait while someone constructs my meal. If I wasn't, I'd eat at a chain burger dispensary. Perhaps some have forgotten, dining out is not about grabbing &amp; running.<br/><br/>If I didn't enjoy the experience at Main St. Deli, I wouldn't eat there..... but I do.

Have been here a couple of times in the past when staying in Greytown and have had ok food and service. However, we tried to get a takeaway coffee here on the long weekend and after waiting for approx 10 mins without anyone acknowledging our existence, decided to head elsewhere. Maybe it's just a case of needing an extra staff member on at busy times but I probably won't be back anytime soon.

What an absolute disappointment. After travelling over to the Wairarapa with family to visit my Husband's Grandparents at Clareville Cemetery, we decided to head back to Greytown for some Lunch...and Main Street Deli was chosen.<br/>Both my husband and I are both trained in and work in Hospitality, and this place an absolute disgrace to our profession!<br/>When we arrived, we headed out to the Garden area and got a table to cater for the 6 adults and 4 children. We ordered drinks, and then our meals, asking the waitress what sort of wait we would have to which we were told 10-15 minutes. Our drinks arrived after about 10 minutes...coffees luke warm, and consumed rather quickly before they turned cold. <br/>30 minutes past, and we still had not received our meals, we enquired, and no one ever came back to us. When tables that had come in after us were receiving their meals before us, I decided to get up and seek some information (bearing in mind it was now an hour since we arrived). When I asked a young staff member for the Manager she went to look for her, and was told by the bloke making the coffees, tell them that the Manager is too busy serving...hmmmm...a manager too busy for a customer who was not happy...Great service...Not! I then saw our waitress and asked her for the Manager...and she managed to get her for me. I told her that I thought it was "beep" ridiculous. She went to the kitchen for me and investigated how long it was going to be, and came back and informed me it would be 5 minutes. I went back and told the family it would be 5 minutes. After 10-15 minutes and still no food and more tables that had arrived after us being served, my father-in-law and mother-in-law headed inside to seek the Manager...she avoided them! They came back and we all left, with other patrons around us commenting on how terrible it was! How this establishment survives, I have no idea...it truly is a disgrace to Hospitality! Considering we had a 2 yr old, 3.5yr old and a 5.5 yr old with us, I think we were very patient...1 hour and 20 minutes is a LONG wait. Our 5.5 yr old has even written a story about how she got no Lunch :-(<br/>Avoid Main Street Deli...They ruined what was supposed to be a lovely meal with family who have now departed back to Aussie! They don't even deserve the 1 star I have given them!

We stopped at this cafe on our way back to Wellington. What a nightmare. While my husband was ordering food and drinks for us I went to the back door to look out on the garden to find a table. On finding one I turned to tell him where I would be and the young waitress, carrying a tray of coffees, walked right into me. I received a full two drinks of coffee down my front and not one apology. The young girl clearly conveyed to me that she thought it was my fault and no one at the front counter even acknowledged anything happened, even though they clearly saw me trying to sponge coffee off myself. To make matters worse, the young waitress went outside to tell everyone at a particular table that it was my fault. Wow - top service here. What a shame, as the smoothies and cake we had were lovely. Somebody needs to educate their staff and model appropriate customer service. I would never recommend this cafe to anybody based on my experience.

Got a takeaway coffee, some pizza bread and a couple of other 'nice deli' bits on our way through from Wellington to Hawkes Bay - OMG I should have read the review before I wasted my time and money. My 12year old can do better pizza bread. Charging Greytown prices is one thing but not living up to expectation is quite another. Please lift your game before you loose your business.

They must not have taken any notice of these reviews over the last year because I could agree with all the bad points!I took some friends to the Main St Cafe on Sunday for brunch.....bad idea....its the last time I will ever go there. This is the third time I have been, the first time with my sister that lives in Masterton and it was great food but crappy service. So I over looked the service because of the food, but what a mistake. My eggs were over cooked, my daughter had a chicken burger that had chicken thigh instead of breast(if you are charging that price dont use road kill) I could go on about the food more but would end up with RSI in my fingers from all the typing. I did think about complaining but really with the staff being so slack and having the personality of a drain pipe I just walked out, thinking never again!!!!

My wife and I stopped off for lunch in Greytown. What a disaster. We placed our order and paid. The coffee was terrible and the service even worse. We waited and waited for our lunch to arrive. We noticed that other customers were having problems and we knew this was not going to be good. Being able to view the kitchen from where we were sitting it looked like it needed a darn good clean. After waiting over an hour for our lunch which never arrived we walked out in disgust. Our advice, find another restaurant in Greytown

I have eaten here before and the food was ok, but yesterday we went for lunch to celebrate a special birthday &amp; the food and service were both terrible.<br/><br/>It started bad when the waitress informed us they would not honour our entertainment voucher as it expired the day before. The wording on the voucher suggested it was valid on the 1st, but we didn't bother to persue - just thought it would have been a nice touch for them to honour it. <br/><br/>When the food came we regretted our decision to stay - my chicken salad was ghastly - the chicken was dry, the salad basic &amp; miserly, and it had little flavour - not good value at all. My dad had bacon and eggs which were ok, but poorly presented. Mum opted for wedges with sour cream, cheese &amp; bacon and they were very poor - the shop bought wedges were fine, but there wasn't much bacon and you could hardly see any cheese - very mean with the toppings and looked like just plain wedges.<br/><br/>Will not be going back again, and will be telling my friends the same. Suggest crossing the road to somewhere better would be a good idea.<br/>If the food &amp; sevice stays this bad, they might regret not joining the latest entertainment book, coz who would go there?

Originally from the local area but now living in Australia my wife and I and my sister and my elderly aunt who is a local decided to have lunch at the Main Street Deli Cafe on Sunday 22 May 2011 .<br/> What an experience it turned out to be, we waited 30 min for our order to be taken,a further 30 min to be told 1 menu item was no longer available. Approx 30 mins later we received our order but then had to return 1 meal because it was significantly undercooked, unedible in fact. On receiving our meals we ran into problems obtaining cuttlery to eat them with .<br/> The staff displayed zero emphasis on customer service and a demonstrated absolutely no desire to rectify the problems that they created.<br/> The restroom was in a disgusting state with bins overflowing and no room to move. <br/> I observed that other patrons were experiencing the same problems as us and this establishment does absolutely nothing to promote Greytown instead it leaves a very bad impression of a dining experience in Greytown
Selective
We stopped here for coffee and cake. The service was lack luster and slow. The coffees were below average. The soy hot chocolate was unable to be drunk. Slices and cakes okay but looked more like bought from a wholesaler. <br/><br/>Not a rush to destination.
Lynnette Tonkin
The food was lovely, burgers and eggs cooked to perfection...couldn't fault the service and then it was all RUINED by the fact that 2 late arrivals to a table in the outdoor area next to us sat down and lit up cigarettes...the smoke then with the wind blowing towards us wafted straight into our faces and all over our food. Why restaurants continue to allow cigarettes on their premises to ruin the dining experience of others around them is beyond me. <br/><br/>If smokers can't be considerate, how about the cafe doing their bit for the smoke free environment of others (if you are not prepared to ban it as other eating establishments have done - perhaps a big sign saying "SMOKING PERMITTED" on the way to the courtyard so unsuspecting non smoking diners who want to enjoy the last of the summer sun don't venture out there and then have to get up and move table, drinks, and food in hand so that they did not have to passive smoke<br/><br/>Come on now, in this day and age!<br/><br/><br/>Update: So we went back again, why not give it another go on a warm sunny day..this time we sat inside, but if the waiting staff could actually not be so god dammed stressed and crack a smile it would make the whole experience all the better. One in particular, perhaps the owner, looked early 40's, thin woman, geepers no way to greet your customers when you leave them standing at the counter in front of you for 3 minutes whilst you write out receipts. Customer service is all about putting the customer first, stopping what you are doing and acknowledging them would be a start!. <br/><br/>Won't be back after the two experiences.
Caffeinated Weka
I have been visiting the deli for at least ten years now. I've been lucky enough to have a great experiences almost every time, today included. Even on a busy day (Martinborough Fair), our service was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed eating in the shaded outdoor area (apart from the flies). My eggs Benedict was tasty, although I'm surprised the ciabatta wasn't very toasted. My partner's chicken burger tasted fine but came with barely-cooked fries. Coffee is ok. As always, the extensive counter selection is superb. Hopefully the deli will retain the quality it's been known for in years to come.

Quick stop for breakfast on the way home from Masterton. My wife has dined here before and liked it - so we thought we'd try it. It has a nice atmosphere, spoiled by the fact they serve Vittoria Coffee - ick! (sorry, coffee snob that I am).<br/><br/>Ordered the deli breakfast. Poached eggs weren't overdone - GOOD! They can cook eggs in water! Interestingly enough, the breakfast is served in a large soup bowl looking plate thing. Not so good for a couple of reasons - 1. hard to eat anything but soup and cereal out of them and 2. it holds liquid. Which is where the let down is.<br/><br/>Eggs are served on ciabatta, which is one of my favourites, but it didn't seem to be toasted at all and it appeared the eggs and ciabatta may have been one of the first things on the plate. As tomatoes and mushrooms were placed on the plate, all the liquids were collecting in the centre of this bowl - leaving the ciabatta absolutely mushed (is that an adequate food review word? Mushed?). I can understand that poached eggs will dampen the bread a bit, thats hardly scientific - and yet many, many places manage to avoid soaking the bread through. Even I can avoid doing that at home. One way is to toast the bread and perhaps place something like bacon between the eggs and the toast - although in this case, it was being drenched and mushied(?) from the bottom up too.<br/><br/>I've never liked mushy (there goes that word again) bread. Its one of my pet hates. I know its just bread and water, but it has the cosistency of something far worse.<br/><br/>A shame really because it seemed a busy place in a quaint little "please dont let me ever live here" town.<br/><br/>Didnt experience the manner of service that others here have experienced, so I cant mark them down for service, as it was pretty good. But similar to a review of Cafe Cuba in Palmerston North - poached eggs are basically eggs and water, taking it another step and putting it on toast/bread isn't actually that hard, even without mushing the bread.

My wife and I discovered Greytown after visiting my brother in Masterton. I purchased a Beef &amp; Burgundy pie to takeaway as we were on our way to Wellington. Simply put, it is the best pie I have ever eaten and my wife, who has not had a pie in many years because of all the gristle in pies past, ate half the pie herself over the next 2-days. I want the recipe and I want to try the Venison Pie and Wild Boar Pie, I loved it and as for service, we were there on the 4th January, very busy and no delays experienced.

It was a real disapointment.. I find Greytown a special place to visit and unfortuanatly the rude manner of this cafe has put me off the town. I was made to feel like i wasnt valued in any way and all they wanted was to take my money and kick us out as soon as possible. Food was ok, coffee? I would have preferred instant. Not impressed with anything else.. A real shame
