Review The Craypot - Haast

Saw many reviews on Google Maps about the blue cod fish and chips and wondered what all the fuss was about- turned out great! Salt flakes added to the yummy fish, with a batter that was crispy and not overly thick. The crayfish salad was pretty delicious too! And the mussels were fresh, they paired well with the provided bread! If you’re considering a drive along the West Coast, this is a good stop to add to your list! Do bring some fly repellent though.

One of the reasons NZ travel is so fun. The Craypot serves fresh, local fare in a charming, cozy seaside setting. Preparation of simple dishes is flawless, and fresh flavors come shining through.

Found this place while searching for a place to eat near Haast. Very good fish and chips, crispy outer without tasting oily and good soft fish inside. I think it was cod. I enjoyed it with a table sauvignon blanc. I also ordered the seafood platter and the mussels, which I found to be ok, but not like the fish and chips. The service here is also very good, friendly and responsive. And of cos, it was really nice eating good fish and chips by the sea/ocean. P.s. it is actually quite far from Haast even though I didn't regret making the trip there it in hindsight.

I cannot recommend the Craypot highly enough, what an absolute gem of a place! We were recommended to come here by a friend, and it did not disappoint. Lovely location, a little scenic drive to get there from Haast, and relaxed atmosphere. Being veggie, and travelling around the New Zealand countryside for the past 3 weeks I had struggled to find suitable food with much variety - but the Halloumi salad I had here was *chefs kiss*

By far one of the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. The fish of the day was fresh as it can be and the chips were thick and crispy. Totally worth the drive from Haast and very warmly recommended. There's a very nice and short Bush walk starting nearby too. Another reason to pay this place a visit.

Food was AMAZING, scenery was FANTASTIC. I would give this 7 stars if I could. the owners / chefs were so friendly and nice. Definitely worth the drive in (good views on the way there anyway). We sat outside and the breeze + summer skies were beautiful. We had the blue cod fish n chips (v fresh and soft), crayfish salad (the seasoning was ace, like lick clean kind of ace), mussels (there were so many and the sauce was potent) and it was enough for 5 of us. All the dishes were really good and even the chips were great! We had coffees too and those were good.

This place has an awesome reputation, thoroughly deserved. We chose to share a crayfish salad and a seafood basket. The presentation is simple and most of the seating is outside. The quality of the food and the stunning setting draw people to drive the 40 km south from Haast. Am amazing experience- a lunch to remember and a place to return to. That first mouthful of crayfish was divine.

Brought a group of 18 here mid-March 2019 and we returned today in our motorhome. Not much has changed and still a very popular place to visit. Very busy today with a half hour wait for our 3 meals of blue cod and chips - not the cheapest meal, BUT certainly up there with the best! So fresh ... can't beat it! Really good to see a policeman checking boat catches as they return back from fishing. Very hot today and an exceptionally pleasant way to spend a day. South Island has many hidden treasures and this truly is one!

Cosy little spot out of the way, the food (although a little pricey) was very nice. The fish was some of the best takeaway fish I've had, chips fresh & crunchy, as was the salad. Only negative was there was a few customers inside that were coughing and splattering all over the place, with no noticeable ventilation inside the dining area, anyone in there would be catching their sickness. The owners should have asked them to eat outside. Other than that, very nice little place and I'd go again.

It’s was worth the 20 min drive into Jackson Bay for this gem. One of the best seafood chowder I have ever ate. Fish and chips were great as well! Please view of the bay with good food is the best you can ask for.
