Review Bluestone Steakhouse - Hamilton

Shannon Claire Lopez
We really enjoyed our meal here, the food was delicious. The staff were all friendly, and made our time here delightful. Definitely the best steakhouse in Hamilton, and the food was fantastic. It was a perfect night out, and I'd definitely recommend coming here. Our group thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

Best steak in Hamilton. Excellent deserts so don't fill up on side dishes. If you (or who your with) don't like steak, I have tried the fish of the day and it's also excellent. There is a good wine selection but not much in the way of genuine craft beers.

One of our top 3 places to go for date night. Steak tartare is excellent. Desserts are very decadent. Would recommend the deconstructed lemon meringue
Paul Johns
The steak was awesomely charred on the outside and sweet and moist in the middle. 👍🏻 The service was ok, we waited for drinks longer than I wanted. Our friends had the tartare, it was too mustardy. The kitchen remade it for free. All in all a good time. Thanks.

Carnivore heaven! They focus on meat, beef, chicken, some fish and lamb. Their speciality is steak. No pretentions about anything else. If you are looking for any other type of menu, I suggest go somewhere else. The narrow focus on the menu is really nice. It also means these guys knows how to do meat properly. And they do it expertly. Please Bluestone do not lose your focus. It is not often that I find places that serves steaks and know their meat. I have been here a few times. Every time was a delight. You always exceeded my expectations. It was a real treat and pleasure every time. That includes the service, atmosphere and menu. Keep it up!

Really good meat quality! And I grew up on a meat farm so I do know about this. Hereford or Angus meat. Wich is two good meat breeds. Several side disches and sauces to choose from. Friendly staff that know their job well. Cozy, not to bright and not to loud. I would recomend this place even thou it's higher prices compared to the area, but you ger what you pay for. This shows where those extra dollars are spent. 👍

I'm only 14 and I went with my family but I will say the eye fillet was amazing. The desert were even better. The salted tiramisu is still coffee flavored but still a great dish witch looked amazing

Had a lovely night put last week at Bluestone. The steaks were soooooo good. We ended it with a delicious and beautiful panna cotta. 100 percent would recommend going there. Always a treat coming to dinner. Thankyou bluestone.

Great food at a reasonable price. Our steaks are very juicy and flavourful and the sides are delicious as well.

Lovely staff, relaxing place to unwind and enjoy a absolutely tasty meal. So enjoyed dinner tonight thankyou

I had the Sirloin steak with bluecheese sauce and baked potato and absolutely loved it! The ambiance was great, the staff were fantastic and awesome food.

Traditional steak house. Nice tender steak with delicious sauce and interesting choice of duck fat fries. They accommodate for vegetarian as well with either three mushroom pasta or pumpkin coconut curry.

Very fancy and high prices. But good for a special event. Went for my graduation/showcase dinner and everyone enjoyed their meals. Very large burgers, couldn’t finish the whole thing!

Large potion, lovely service. A bit crowd at night.

We went as a family group. Service was prompt and friendly. The waitress knew the offerings and advised on choices for children. The ambience was relaxing and warm. I had snapper that was beautifully presented and tasty. Others had steaks and we're very happy with the meal. The youngest had burgers and enjoyed them. Desserts were really appealing. For the quality of food and service the or ice was reasonable. I would definitely go again.

Awesome service. Every table was full and the place was packed when I went, making it a bit noisy. But they still managed to bring our food out in great time. Chicken was amazing, and the steak was good. Was a little under done and probably not worth what we paid, but none the less, would 100% eat there and tell people to go there. If it wasnt for the noise and another 20 seconds on the steak, i would have given it 5 stars.

It’s been ages since I’ve dined out in Hamilton CBD. Coming home and looking at all the new restaurants like the Bluestone Steakhouse after all these years means Hamilton is heading in the right direction in terms of being a culinary hotspot.<br/><br/>The cocktails here are FANTASTIC! What’s funny is that I can't even really remember which cocktails I ordered since they were all so good that we had like 4-5 each and as a result our night became rather blurred. From what i remember in terms of tasting the mushroom pasta was delightful! Full of fungi flavour and the creamy sauce resulted in a rather substantial meal. The mash that came with the steaks were awesome and the steaks themselves juicy. Bluecheese sauce and pepper one would be my favorite sauces. <br/><br/>Credit to the staff, our table at the time was rowdy and they handled us with the best professionalism!<br/><br/>Showstopper: Cocktails, mushroom pasta and steaks.<br/><br/>Overall Grade: A

Open for lunch now?! Should be all the time bit i can see why they dont with the current menu. Bluestone was great as it always is. Bit hot inside but its about the food right? 5/5.

Lovely staff, great atmosphere and amazing steak! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone on special occasions because it was a bit too expensive for a big steak and chips but no salad!

Went out for dinner with hubby tonight. Arrived at the restaurant & was instantly greeted with a smile from one of the waitresses. She was warm & kind. After being seated we ordered our meals. Didn't wait long, which I was impressed. I had the sirloin steak, medium rare. Cooked to perfection! It was succulent & delicious! The baked potato with sour cream & chives was huge!! But oh my goodness I finished 3/4 of it! Delish!! & the mushroom sauce was divine! Very tasty. My husband had the seafood chowder & that was huge, but he didn't complain! He loved it! Desserts didn't disappoint us either! I had the deconstructed lemon meringue pie, & hubby had the caramel sundae. Gorgeous! In love :)<br/>The decor I love! It was like from the 1800s, very nice! & the relaxed ambiance of the restaurant I absolutely love! Lovely, warm & friendly staff. Maybe our meals a little pricey, but worth it in the end. Plus I used my goody card - $50 birthday voucher :) Great evening all in all. Will definitely come back for more.

By far my favourite restaurant, best atmosphere great customer service great deals when using goodie card, greatest steak and sauce of all time.

Very nice! Fairly pricey, but well worth it. Steak was beautiful, everything was clean, and service was good. Pretty, warm  and sophisticated restaurant. Would definitely come again!

My partner and I went to Bluestone steakhouse last night. The service was outstanding, the food was amazing and couldn't have asked for more. Thank you for making our night, it was outstanding the steaks were perfect. <br/>

Having heard about how great their steak was got me all worked up and booked for a party of 8.<br/>We all ordered their signature steak medium~mine turned out all right~juicy and delicious.. however some turned out a bit overdone~the consistency of their food could improve.<br/>I agree with some other reviews that their service could improve~i know it was a pretty busy wednesday night, but we waited more than 15 mins to get someone to come order..and everytime we wanted some service was hard to get someone to come over, so at times i had to get up and go over.<br/>I would give them another try but probably not anytime soon.
Sarah Gillum
Great service & amazing food! My first time ordering a steak at a restaurant & Bluestone didn't disappoint. Chicken paté was so smooth & creamy. Southern fried chicken crunchy with the perfect amount of spice. Chocolate mousse for dessert was divine! Would definitely go back.
Amanda De Frias
Went here for my birthday last night, and it was the best meal I've had in ages! Everything was well cooked, full of flavour, and presented nicely. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and even put a candle in my dessert! Highly recommended.

My wife and I have had the best steak from this place! Cooked to perfection and it was so juicy (medium rare). My wife ordered well done and it was still juicy. The side of chips fried in duck fat was sensational. Definitely one of the best steakhouses in NZ and Australia<br/>

Had an evening meal at bluestone. We had the eye fillet and sirloin with chips and salad and salted caramel ice cream and Creme brûlée for dessert. The steaks were Great and cooked to perfection, the chips were cooked in duck fat which were also very good, came with a sauce and also Mayo. The desserts were good and finished off the meal.<br/><br/>Service was also very good. Only negative comment I would make is the decor seemed a little old fashioned / dated now. The chips came out in a metal basket which is also a little dated especially as macdonalds are doing that now.

Have been eyeing Bluestone up for sometime now, finally decided to take the plunge. Upon arriving we were seated with our menus outside left to have a think about what to order. However, I think they actually forgot about us. It took so long for someone to come out that we were actually considering getting up and leaving. Thankfully a very groomed young specimen came to wait us after a decent 25 minutes plus lol (I think a 10 minute wait is the absolute maximum acceptable) . Ordered the Calamari - Great. Then followed by the classic signature steak - Very disappointing for $48. The mushroom sauce was watery and tasteless (tasted my boyfriends blue cheese sauce, much better!). Duck fat chips - Dry and meh. I only ate a few and left the rest on my plate. Steak - Well I dunno. My boyfriend seemed to really enjoy it, I didn't. I only ate half of it. I then followed this up with dessert. I rather enjoyed that. I have to mention when paying for our meal that what appeared to be manager was very genienly interested in what we thought of our food and how we had found out about Bluestone. I honestly found that rather refreshing. In conclusion I really do think the signature is overrated and I've been left dumbfounded by all the rave reviews.

Went out to dinner at Bluestone with a couple of friends. I've heard good things about the place and was rather disappointed. The food was okay, but overall the time for service and value for money disappointed me.<br/>One of my friends ordered the Bluestone signature steak - a 520gm ribeye steak according to their menu. However, at least 200gm of the 520gm was bone - I've never seen such a big bone attached to a steak! For $48, he would have been better off getting a "smaller" steak that didn't come with a bone.<br/>The other friend ordered the 'special' attached to the menu - a 30 day aged sirloin steak. It's the first sirloin steak I've seen come attached to a bone! While not as large a bone as that attached to the ribeye, it still detracted from the size of the steak, and in addition barely qualified as 'rare' when my friend had asked for a 'medium' done steak. The waitresses were all too busy to catch his eye though, so he put up with it.<br/>I had the beef burger, which I rather enjoyed. The beef pattie has to be the best I've had in a while, even if the 'salad' mentioned on the burger in the menu consisted of 4 lettuce leaves. <br/>So one out of three mains were acceptable, but in addition to this the service was slow. We were shown to a table (pre-booked) when we first arrived, but sat making conversation for at least 20 minutes before our drinks orders were taken. Despite having closed menus (having all perused the menu and decided on our mains by this time), the waitress disappeared the second she took our drinks order. These took another 15 minutes to arrive, at which time we placed our dinner orders. These arrived in a timely manner, but as mentioned, the 'medium' steak was underdone. We waited a further 20 minutes after finishing the meal for our plates to be cleared, and another 15 minutes to receive dessert menus. It carried on this way through the night, you get the idea.<br/>In the end it cost us $194 for three people for a main each (no entrees), a couple of desserts, and a couple of drinks each. This isn't value for money considering the size of the meals provided, and more what I expect from a gourmet restaurant than a 'steakhouse'. Overall, I'm disappointed and won't be returning or recommending this place to anyone.

This is now my husbands favourite restaurant. I went twice in three days, both times the food was lovely, the service was great. Not a place for veggie lovers they give you a knife that looks like it came from crocodile Dundee but to be fair you don't need it. First time I went I had the seafood chowder as a main and couldn't finish it, my companions had the rump, sirloin, eye fillet and they all enjoyed it, next time I had the rack of lamb and it was lovely. The blue cheese sauce is Devine we will definitely be going back

On a drive back to Auckland, our family chanced upon this gem of a restaurant. Feeling hungry, we decided to check it out - and we have no regrets.<br/><br/>I ordered the Salmon Steak and it was good. The fish was moist and juicy and the skin was really crunchy. The chips were full of flavour and the mushroom sauce matched the salmon really well.<br/><br/>My companion ordered the Sirloin Steak (medium rare) and he commented that it was cooked to perfection, with the baked potatoes complementing the dish really well.<br/><br/>We would come back again if we happen to be around the Hamilton area.<br/>#Challenge

Wouldn't bother again, service slow, steak and venison over cooked. Waited 1 hr 20 for mains- apologies only go so far. They kept trying to make it right but it just got worse. Had to even leave the table to ask for salt and pepper and drinks Don't call yourself a steak house if you can't cook steak. Staff way to young to be dealing with customers, just no life experience, there needs to be a better age/experience balance, very disappointing over all.

The best steak I ever had! <br/>Husband and I have been here 4 times now and we always come home really full and happy from both the service and the food.<br/>Price range is justified because it is the best steak house and you do get what you paid for. <br/>Ambience is very cozy and romantic, perfect for a first date or special occasions.<br/>Menu is on point, lots of meat, alright! <br/>Try their Bluestone Signature Steak--- slow cooked to perfection. <br/>Dessert is also a must to cleanse your palette after that big slab of meat. Try their Lemon meringue and Chai Latte.<br/><br/>

Had to check this place out as we heard it did some amazing steaks. <br/>Each steak comes with an option of a sauce and a potato side: duck fat chips, baked potato, or potato puree.<br/>I wouldnt get anything non steak at this restaurant (I mean...why would you if you were going to a steakhouse).<br/>Two of my companions ordered the 200mg eye fillet and one ordered the 250mg scotch. <br/>I had no hesitation going for the signature 520mg Hereford prime rib eye, with a side of baked potato and jus. Afterall im a big hungry man (at least I am in my dreams)<br/><br/>Anyways.. My verdict? Absolutely amazing. My rib eye was sous vide for 18hrs on low heat before being grilled to a medium state. The bone added extra moisture and flavour. Each bite was tender and juicy. The jus added a nice creamy but pleasant punch.<br/>Cannot recommend it enough!<br/>My companions were all pleased by their dishes, though i personally felt mine tasted better after having a bite of each (didnt tell them that).<br/><br/>Not the cheapest meal at $48, but a worthwhile experience. One of the best cuts of juicy prime rib beef i have had.

A large group of us booked for a dinner. What a lovely night we had! Excellent, friendly service that was not over the top. They did not hover, but staff did keep checking at right moment. The food was excellent. Every one in our group had a nice meal. I had the rack of lamb. The pumpkin purée underneath could have been the main star. Delicious. Ok, it wasn't 'cheap' , but being a pretty good home cook myself, it is not often I think a restaurant can do better than me. This did. There was a nice fire going too, in a cold night. I would give 10/10 for the experience and will definitely be back.

Came in here for dinner before I had to head back to Auckland, it was just after they opened so it was empty, but the place was neat and tidy, felt more Pub like than Fine dining. <br/><br/>When it comes to steak I'm a sucka for rib eye / scotch. <br/><br/>So went for the Signature <br/><br/>The Steak was BIG <br/><br/>The meat was moist but felt dry, leading to a strange experience.<br/><br/>The meaty chewy texture was not present and felt oh so tender ( would have gone for an eye fillet if I wanted that texture) but I guess that's what 18 hours of sous vede will do to ya. <br/><br/>They also left the meat it self alone with out much seasoning to showcase the main ingredient, but in saying that this peice of meat was rendered so beautifully. The fat was charred and the meat was finished over the flames leaving a delightful scorched textured surface and a smoky charred flavour. <br/><br/>They had a range of sauces and butter. <br/>I got the jus (included in the price) and an additional blue cheese <br/>(extra charge)<br/><br/>Jus, good savoury flavours gentle sweetness and velvety gloss. Nothing to fault.<br/><br/>Blue cheese had a very balanced flavour but the consistency was disappointing, a bit floury and not up to the velvety mark of the Jew <br/><br/>Chip good crunch and soft inside, once again not enough salt for me. <br/>Personal preference hard to cater for so no complaints <br/><br/>Some of the thicker chips could have benefited a few more mins in the heat.   <br/>Came with a nice sour cream. <br/><br/>Ordered a Tempus two temprenllo to come out with a main. <br/><br/>Went and spoke to the bar staff as they had nice range of spirts as I wanted a Manhattan to start with. <br/><br/>When the lady said "you want what?" <br/><br/>I said, I may get the glass of wine now instead please. <br/><br/>Wine was well stored or has not been open too long, was really nice and open when it arrived.<br/> Could have been a little moreish .<br/><br/>The serve staff were very friendly and attentive with out being invasive. <br/><br/>But I suspect you may have to wait a fair bit of time when this place gets busy.<br/><br/>As was the case by the time I wanted to order desert and it was very difficult to get attention. <br/><br/>For those of you who care, the toilets were clean and tidy which is always nice.<br/><br/>Will be back again but may try a non sous vede cooked steak.
Brad Gordon
Awesome night out, beautiful atmosphere, staff were friendly and the food was cooked to perfection!<br/>Only thing wrong was that we had no room left for desert

Went there on Saturday 14th and ordered the Crispy Port Shank and a Prime Angus Burger. The pork was NOT crispy although it tasted good and the burger meat was over cooked and dry. This was not what I expected for a $29 burger and a $34 pork shank. Will not eat there again even though service was good the food was the most important at that price.
Tim Nesdale
The signature steak is to die for, just absolute perfection. The service is exemplary and the menu is tremendous even if you're preference is not beef. Can't wait until next time

We did have to wait for 20 minutes to have drinks orders taken, (while we watch others being seated and orders taken) by then we were ready to order everything. Entrees were a really good serving size (2 shared between 4 of us) and mains were equally good, (pork shanks, fillet steak and salmon between us) although frustrating to have to pay for the extra sides of veges etc. For the price would think these would be included. Same comment regarding the seating arrangements ... luckily we were in a corner but could understand others would feel adjoining tables were a little close for comfort. Waitress didn't seem like she wanted to be there either. Overall the food would entice me back, but service and wait times not ideal. Would probably be 3.5 stars if this was possible.

We had been looking for a place to eat for a New Year's Eve dinner, but with all our top picks closed we decided to eat here. <br/>Lucky we did! Our table wasn't ready when we arrived for our booking, so they took us up to the bar where our first round was on the house. They also still accept the Entertainment Card for their former restaurant, The Abbey.<br/>We had the chicken parfait to share for a starter, delicious. My partner had the eye fillet with baked potato and said it was delicious. I had the merino lamb which was scrumptious!<br/>My only criticism of this place would be the serving size of the lamb was HUGE, but if I hadn't squeezed in dessert this wouldn't be a problem. The dining room was also quite packed in which made it hard to navigate to the bathroom without brushing between tables.<br/>Overall a fantastic night out, would definitely return.

My wife and I went to Bluestone with family friends last night. We cover 30 years between us, so you can imagine differing tastes. <br/><br/>Other reviewers have mentioned the wait staff. Faultless... and how nice to be called Sir and Ma'am rather than 'hi guys'. My wife is not a guy.<br/><br/>Timing was pretty good and the food superb. Eye fillet, Scotch fillet and venison... all cooked perfectly. Presented well too. A little noisy in the resaurant, but when you have 2 tables comprising 35 people ready to party up, you have to expect that. All part of life.<br/><br/>I am looking for a place to take my international board to for dinner Nov 22nd. <br/><br/>I found it.

Possibly the best meal I have had all year. My girl friend and I had dinner on a Sunday night and we were treated as we entered and shown to our table. Our waitress introduced her self by name and the trainee who was shadowing her for the night. She introduced the specials and helped us through the menu. Our order was taken promptly and drinks were served instantly. Our starters were the garlic bread and samosas which were presented excellently. The steaks were coked perfectly and we never wanted for any attention during our visit. Our water was topped up regularly and we were left alone to enjoy our amazing meal. The lighting was not too dark at all as some of the other comments may suggest. It was perfectly lit with the addition of candles and a warming fire nearby. I will do my best to visit as often as possible. Could not speak more highly of the food and the service. I even made a point of tipping the wait staff and the kitchen for a job well done which they were reluctant to accept. Well done.

Very disappointing on Saturday, September 7, 2013. My mushroom sauce was 4 slices of mushroom in a non-descript brown liquid. If you like mashed potato, which looks like it has been squeezed through a machine into a bizarre plait, then you will be happy. Don't bother with the gnocchi if you are remotely hungry. The gnocchi serving delivered to one of our dinner party was nothing short of disgraceful. I also doubt if any of the "duck fat chips" had even the remotest contact with a duck, or its fat. In summary: First time, last time.<br/>Update: Tuesday, December 17, 2013: Friends went. "Best meal I've had in years. Outstanding."<br/>Good grief. I won't change my review. The night we went it was appalling.

We went to the Bluestone Steakhouse for my birthday and was very dissatisfied.<br/>Upon arriving we were told they had double booked us so had to wait for our pre booked table given to someone else, they didn't offer us complimentary drinks they just directed us to the bar and said we can buy drinks while we wait.<br/>We then had to wait a country age for our starters and drinks, our waiter was also training and didn't have a clue on serving our table. <br/>They were under staffed and the decor was ill matched white table cloths, which made the place look cheap.<br/>Overall it was a poor experience won't be going back ....<br/>Come back the "Abbey"

Menu - the dish from the menu we wanted was not available. I find this unacceptable in a top end restaurant, if it's on the menu manage the inventory so that it can be supplied please.<br/>Service - good. Steak - unforgettable, really very enjoyable. But note it is far more expensive than other steak specialist restaurants that provide as gooder quality steak meal.<br/>Desert - 3 varieties ordered within our group, all very forgettable. Venue - too dark, couldn't even read the menu.
Nigel Wade
Food was quite good. Service was rubbish. Place was dark. <br/><br/>For the money: I'd expect a lot more than just good food. <br/><br/>Went with some people to Bluestone Steakhouse. One guest ordered well done, got served 'medium rare' the staff member proceeded to argue with her that it was 'well done' when it was clearly dripping red. The staff member then came back after the meal was re-served and said 'is that aright now' - but it wasn't it tasted like a gumboot, that guest just gave up and didn't eat it. <br/><br/>Another guest was incorrectly informed about a menu item and was left with quite an unpleasant taste in her mouth. <br/><br/>Throughout the service was pretty crap, nice staff just so young, like school age. People who are not old enough to drink should not be serving at a fine dining restaurant. Train the staff and things would be a lot better. <br/><br/>I got up to go to the toilet, was walking across the room and staff member literally almost bowled me over walking to a serve a meal, I had to stop to avoid the collision, not even a sorry. Its not like it was my fault, she literally walked 5 meters to create that situation. Seriously rude. <br/><br/>I'm not saying it's a bad restaurant, I'm saying the place is dark three of us needed to use my phone to get enough light to read the menu. The staff are rude and very very in experienced, and they don't know a Pinot or Shiraz from grape juice. <br/><br/>At one point, in a restaurant with like 15 people in it on a Saturday night (yep, it was dead) I walked outside to have a cigarette, when I walked back in, .. the girl tried to 'seat' me (e.g. find me a table) ... she'd served me a drink less than 10 mins ago !! inexperienced. <br/><br/>The food, .. when they follow the order, was pretty good though. <br/><br/>oh and .. CLEAN THE MALE TOILETS ... ya know, .. at least every two weeks or so.
Fiona Platje
This is the best steak meal I have ever experienced. We all had a different steak and each one was perfect. The accompanied were well seasoned with amazing flavour.<br/><br/>Great atmosphere and wait staff<br/><br/>I would highly recommend experiencing this for yourself.<br/><br/>The signature dish was out of this world!!
Evelyn Bagnall
Great food, well priced and definitely a place a man can get a steak. I have been to several steak places and walked out with the guys still hungry. <br/>Only small hiccup was when they tried to seat us at a bar leaner even though we had booked and were the first people to arrive. But after refusing to sit there they located a table for us. Would definitely go again. The food was amazing and the chef's dips with the bread selection were great
Paul Clark
Going to Bluestone Steakhouse place was something I never thought I'd do. The style of the food and nature of the decor in no way suits my personality, however I braved my way through the door and was very pleasantly surprised!<br/>The wait staff whisked me away to a seat and immediately took my drink order. Me and my acquaintance were ready for a wild night and so we ordered a bottle of their finest wine, a selection of which was brilliant.<br/>I myself had a medium rare steak, beautifully presented, and which went above and beyond all my expectations, however the portion of fries provided did not make me believe it was almost Christmas.(I'm traditional, you know, provide the steak and balance it with the fries!)<br/><br/>My acquaintance had the fish of the day, again beautifully presented and full of flavour. A lot of venues at this point are serving fish that is not fresh, but not only was this not the case here, but the fish also had a lovely flavor infusion. By now the wine was kicking in however, and we were having a jolly old time. Thanks Bluestone Setakhouse for a wonderful evening.
