Review Sichuan Style Restaurant In Hamilton - Hamilton

La Vida
It's pretty popular (passed by one time and saw there were heaps of people dining, so thought we should give it a try some time) food we ordered tasted good. Portion were large, in my own opinion. I wish you could order like just half maybe? ☺️ Price is fine too. We asked for water but we were given hot water instead by the lady. (No big deal, just thought I'd mention it for other people (make sure you say it clearly ☺️ maybe we didn't say it clearly enough, tho I'm sure my husband said it twice 😅 we might come back some other time and try their other dishes ❤️

I found this restaurant by walking the streets of Hamilton and every time I walked past it was buzzing with large groups of people that were all stuffing there faces while enjoying beverages. I finally decided to go and I was met with the exact same ambience I had witnessed before and I felt excited to finally be a part of it. Sichuan style is true to its name and represents exactly what it is promoting!!Prepare for the spice but also take note of the beautiful flavours and textures of the cooking before the heat kicks in (if you order a spicy dish) The prices are above average but can also be balanced by taking advantage of the Full license with a corkage fee of $10 This place is and should be distinguished as a staple in the city of Hamilton.

It was my first time eating there with my family yesterday night but believe me its the best Chinese restaurant in town. The staff and the service 5star.The owner is super friendly and ask us about the food and service. The owner allow us to finish our meal even after they close the restaurant as we haven't finished our meal. They have wide range of different dishes. Big Thanks 🥰💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓🥰. Got the perfume fish (香水鱼)and tasted amazing!! The portion size was ginormous too and was definitely to share between 2~3 people. Order a side of rice or Da Mantou (大馒头)to go well with the perfume fish!

Taste is really good plus the staff is really friendly and helpful. The food is full of flavor if you like the spicy or hot staff. It’s the must visit place. It’s one of the most busy Asian restaurant in Hamilton. In general the food is outstanding but the price is a little bit expensive. Make sure you book before you go otherwise you will need to wait outside for a while. VH

This time I haven't found chinese sausages in fried rice meal, but the taste was still good, eggplant cold salad was spicy enough, I'm satisfied. Also tried dumplings, it's absolutely amazing and fried noodles is also fine, but sometimes there's too much green cabbage. Recommended for sure👍 P. S. Tried special sets with burgers, they are very delicious, full of meat, but saltless. But its all right. The soup a bit disappointed😔😔😔 just corn flour water with some fungus, bamboo and egg, I don't mean I want to get meat for this money, but it's absolutely without any taste and salt again, I was lucky having soy sauce and salt with myself😂 Wish you guys to improve your small mistakes because you're popular place and have to keep a good quality position💪👌👌 15,12,2021 Winton filling is terrible, looks like frozen sausage were used here, much pastry, small quantity of filling.

This restaurant is my biggest craving! I usually get the mapo tofu with rice (no photos of it unfortunately). Had their chilli fish one time and would highly recommend take a couple of people with you because it is a bigggg serving. Otherwise the owner is the sweetest and the food is just amazing never disappoints. ❤️👍🏼

The Sichuan Style is absolutely a five-star experience, and we found it by accident. Next time, it will be by design. The last time we were in Hamilton at lunchtime, feeling hungry, we found a small, quirky Chinese restaurant called Shan Yuan, in Victoria Street. I posted a review of that meal on this platform. Today, remembering just how great it was, we went to find it, only to find its name had changed to "Silver Spoon", and it was closed. Dang! It's so good, and we had really been looking forward to it. (I see that the title of my original review has been changed in Google Maps to the new name. Check it out, then try the food. Yum.) But back in the here and now, we were unsatisfied, and very hungry. So we went to find the Sichuan Style restaurant, just around the corner in Collingwood Street. It looked promising. When dining out, we have always been in the habit of sharing whatever we select. My bride of fifty-two years chose pork and cabbage dumplings, in a bowl of chill sauce. I selected Kung Pao chicken on rice. It has small pieces of chicken with peanuts and broccoli. They appear to have been steamed, then coated with a chilli and sesame sauce. I really cannot choose a winner. Both are absolutely superb. They are very spicy, as the sign on the window promises. But don't be afraid. The balance of flavours in both are perfect - chilli and sesame oil in the pork and dumpling. In the Kung Pao, the chilli and sesame are smoothed in a fine, glistening, subtly cornflour-thickened sauce, softened by the peanuts and chicken pieces . There's nothing but pleasure in these spicy delicacies. The same goes for the warm, wonderful service. The place is is of modest appearance, but pleasantly appointed, with comfortable seating. They served the meal with water, and an elegant pot of wonderful China tea, with small China cups. The Sichuan Style restaurant delivered on its promise. We were delighted. We'll be back.

Popped by on the way to Rotorua for breakfast. It was quite packed at 10ish? At least half the restaurant was full so I could imagine during peak hours, there must be a queue for this place as it’s not really that big, probably could fit around 9-10 tables? Had the soya and fried dough / youtiao. The dough isn’t the thin type I usually have - it’s as huge as my palm?? Really big portion. I liked the soya which is normal but the youtiao is too big and slightly different variation of what I like / usually have (Cantonese style, long, thinner, way crispier ones). Also had a portion of dumplings - surprisingly the skin is very thick unlike the ones I usually have. But the fillings were freshly made. After a couple of dumplings I decided not to the eat the skin, it’s just too thick. Tempted to order other food but was already too full by then. A very authentic Chinese Sichuan joint! The lady who operates the place is also very friendly and nice. Not sure if she speaks English as we spoke to her in Mandarin. They have menus in English and Mandarin too so it wouldn’t be a problem to point and order.

This place is very good. Much better that it looks from the outside. The restaurant is clean and tidy and the service is very food and friendly. Great food selection with a fast service time.

Mmmm. So much goodness in the tum tum. Got to love the numb tongue sauce. Left with enough food for dinner tomorrow.

Delicious food, amazing variety, wonderfully friendly staff. Such a warm inviting place. The hospitality starts on the phone when booking a table with a warm and friendly host. The restaurant is reasonably small and cosy, bookings are essential. Food comes out hot, fresh and tasty in no time at all. You can take away what you don't finish in containers provided. I'll certainly be back!

Food made with love and flavored to perfection, ordered way too much for the size of the meals that came out, yummy leftovers for another day. Best

Delicious and well-priced! Every bite got me sweating, but it was well worth it. I even tied my hair up - it was that serious of an affair. We got cumin lamb, dan dan noodles, and the prawn pork and chives dumplings. Massive servings. Each bite packs a punch. We also bought their chilli sauce! As a bonus: The lady who runs the place is so sweet and friendly.
Bret Lee
Absolutely superb. Good value for money and excellent customer service. The Cumin Lamb stir fry was just soooo good. I got the Dan Dan noodles and that was absolutely brilliant. A good amount of heat, bit of tang and bouncy noodles.

I really appreciated that there was a food choice with lots of yummy ingredients that didn't include onions. Will definitely return.

This has been one of my favorite spots for Sichuan food! I have been going to this place for over 4 years. Over the time these guys have put in a lot of effort to improve their food and service. This has definitely payed off, food is flavorful and they dont hesitate to make alterations if you prefer your dish a certain way. Friendly staff who happily serves customers. Sometimes they have mixed up or forgotten the order and a little reminder has fixed it up. These guys are hardworking and always looking out for customers to have the best experience even if you are just dropping in for a take away.

The food here is amazing - just rich enough and large portions for a cheap price. The food came out within 5 minutes and the staff were super friendly and approachable.

I'd recommend this place for sharing meals.

The photo I have attached is the Sichuan style dumplings and sweet and sour pork with dark sauce.

I visited Sichuan Style Restaurant for dinner tonight. The staff, especially the waitress that served me tonight are very friendly. The food here is delicious and is highly recommended.

2.5/5 Taste
2/5 Display
3/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Average Chinese Restaurant in Hamilton

This restaurant is more Sichuan vs other Chinese restaurant, in detail more of Chongqing style which are oily heavy and spicy. Many would have heard about the famous “dan dan noodle” and this noodle is originated from this area.
4.4 rating on Zomato for a Chinese Restaurant is pretty damn good so I had to see what the hype is about.

Small but clean and spacious(not too crowded, even had a waiting room). Menus in Chinese and English, had their own website with pictures of every single menu which was very surprising for an Asian restaurant. Youtube videos of how their food is made and where they are originated.

Alright this place aint no 5 star top quality fine dining Restaurant but you can see they took time preparing everything. I was very very excited to try their food and this is how it all went downhill.

Service was fast, took them less than 10min to bring out the food. Food was average. It’s probablt one of best restaurants in Hamilton but my expectations were way too high. One of the meal was not even hot, it was just slightly warm and there was way too much oil it was dripping down the side of the plate. Their steamed bun was pretty impressive tho, it was bigger than my fist.

Overall came to $60+ bill with 2 menu and 1 steamed bun. Maybe I should stick with the noodle soups next time.

It was raining and cold outside while we were dining this. Just made it yummier somehow. I think this place is fairly famous because they have a proper waiting room with chairs and all and we waited for bout fifteen minutes or so. It was a random selection. Turned out to be a good one.

We decided to give this place a go given it had the highest rating out of all the restaurants in hamilton. At this point of our trip to nz, we have given up our expectations that food will be good here. Every place we have eaten at has been very underwhelming and it makes us miss home. Sichuan was no exception. The service was good and the dumplings were nice, but that was one dish out of four we ordered. The menu is quite extensive and it makes me wonder why put something on a menu if you cant cook it nice?

Nice food and good service, good location . This restaurant is always busy. I came here for lunch with friends and always feel full when we finished.

I go here all the time with my fiancé and I completely obsessed with their vegan dan dan noodles. I'm not sure if they are truly vegan per se, (I've suspected a beef broth and flavour enhancer) but that never stops me. Also love their edamame beans, and the chinese steam bun. My partner always goes for the sichaun dumplings.
The only thing I think could improve is that they should upgrade to a more roomy restaurant so that the tables aren't so crammed together. These guys get a lot of business and are very popular, especially with their Chinese and Kiwi family customers, so it always feels a tad claustrophobic.
BeeQueUU
packed at 2.30 pm with mostly Asian dinersenjoying massive bowls of red chilli and sauce filled servings. can't be too un-authentic and get my kiwi Asian tick.
Auckland Man
Very disappointed with their dishes. Even some classical Sichuan dished were cooked badly. Their rice is also half cooked half raw. Please do not name yourself Sichuan style in the future.
Summer Wright
Very average compared to other Sichuan food in new Zealand. I ordered the Vegan Dandan noodles off the menu, which came with pork mince. I also ordered plain rice, which never came, and when I followed it up with the server it still never arrived. My partner ordered pork Dandan and Sichuan dumplings, and said both were very bland ("worst Dandan I've ever had"). While the venue was clean and tidy, I would not recommend these items or a visit to this restaurant.
Ellen Zhang
visit it nearly twice a week. A wide range of spicy food offered there. Highly recommend any dishes of fish, taste quite well. The dining environment is however not quite good as less space left when every desk is close to each other

We dined last night for the first time and I called in tonight for take out!

I appreciated how patient the staff were, they discerned that some of us needed help to order and so brought over an iPad with photos of each dish.

I am not particularly adventurous with food so stayed with what I recognised. I highly recommend the Sichuan style dumplings (menu number K26) which are amazing! I also enjoyed the green beans with pork mince (G7), and the eggplant with pork mince (B21). The giant steamed buns are a must to accompany any meal.

Don't bother ordering the stuff you'd find at your local, like fried rice or sweet n sour chicken because compared to the many options available, these are pricier and inferior in flavour, taste and presentation.

Our group of 10 loved the shared dining style and found the atmosphere busy but not intrusive.

I will confidently say that the staff are helpful, the cost is reasonable and the food is Excellent.
A little confusing when on the window there is a sign saying hot and spicy Chinese restaurant

There menu looks endless! Too many choices lol

Ordered the flat rice noodle with lamb,it's not bad,the lamb was a little chewy and my missus thinks it maybe mutton. The rice noodle was half the size I was expecting

Her spicy noodle soup with beef brisket, she liked it

Food came out quicker than expected and prices are fair

Watching other people they ordered these big dishes to share, maybe that's the way to go
Best dumplings EVER !!! As a local I love this place-- Good sized portions, authentic and nice service. My absolute fav Asian place in Hamilton!!

My friends and family could not stop raving about this place, that I decided it was finally time that I try it for myself!

Service was very efficient, and the lady serving us was very friendly.

While the menu was long and endless, there are actually very few vegetarian options :( Fortunately they are very willing to customise the dishes for me :) My spicy fried flat rice noodles with mixed vegetables was rich and flavourful. While husband normally prefers xiao-long-bao/soup buns, he really enjoyed their pork buns. He said the buns are particularly well made, very soft and pillowy in texture, with a subtle sweetness.

We also ordered a plate of taro rolls to share. We were not entirely certain what to expect, but we were definitely very happy with what we were served! The outside texture was like a deep fried bread, slightly savoury in flavour. The filling was taro with natural sweetness. It pushes the edge of both savoury and sweet, which went surprisingly well together. It was almost addictive!

There were so much food that we had to ask for a take away box :p All in all, very decent, authentic Sichuan food, with good value for money. I would be more than happy to visit again if I were in the Hamilton area.

Sichuan-style cooking is well known for its fiery dishes and taste-numbing capabilities.

It is a testament therefore that on a Monday lunch time, Sichuan Style had 6-7 tables full of Chinese , 3 tables of Indians, and 2 tables of Europeans. A diverse patronage, and it is evident that spice level is no barrier for hungry Hamiltonians.

For a real bargain price of $108, we had 6 bowls of hand pulled noodles and two giant plates of spiced Chinese deli meats. An incredible price for an authentic taste of Sichuan cuisine.

Showstopper: Aside from the financial aspect, the fact that the noodles are hand-pulled should be enough of a reason for noodle lovers.

Overall Grade: A

This place got my taste bud dancing. Love love love the food, so much so I am happy to drive from Auckland to Hamilton to just have fried lamb with cumin, it's the bomb. We also had.fried chicken n lamb noodles which was very tasty. The service needs work cause the place is busy and despite the fact we reached there post lunch time, people were still flowing in. Ambiance is as any Chinese restaurant so nothing fancy, what Is amusing is they have a waiting lounge for people to wait with couches n television, lol. Yes it is overpriced but i am sure you can find some dished well within cheap eat budget. Definitely recommend this one!

Every time we went pass Hamilton, we used to eat here, but no more. The taste has gone down gradually, the service has gone down drastically. I guess when the boss isn't here, that's the attitude you get served. While we were waiting, 3 guests were turned away rudely, 1 guest cancelled the entire order as they waited too long. We got there 30mins early, so we had to be served after many guests that hasn't showed up yet... What's the logic...

Everything here is mostly numbing kinda hot. The price is reasonable and portion is huge! Chicken in chilli oil was nice, we also ordered chilli eggplants, trotters noodles and hot & sour soup. The noodles was a let down, was not hand made and taste just like packet udon. The hot sour soup taste too herby for me, not the usual spicy one like you get in chinese restaurant. Overall better than average in terms of cleanliness.

I have been going to this place for 4 years now. And it is the best Chinese in the Tron. A little bit on the pricey side but worth it. It is usually full, even for lunch! And the menu is extensive to say the least. And some of things are a bit too adventurous for me. But I can definitely recommend the Dan dan noodles and fried rice. However if you look around at the tables, the steamboat seems to be very popular too.
My favourite Chinese restaurant outside of China. Authentic Chinese cuisine at more than reasonable prices. The dumplings are amazing.
Be patient with the staff. It's the language barrier that can slow things up but they are lovely, helpful and will not disappoint

If you are a spicy food lover, I highly recommend you to visit this place. They have about 200 dishes.. They are all somewhat spicy tho. Serving is a bit slow, and booking is essential.

New Years Eve at 9 p.m. 2 adults. Seated amongst families of screaming, running misbehaved Chinese children, and screaming babies. Seated next to toilets. No condiments available on table, food served up ungraciously at irregular intervals without bowls. Meat in stir fried rice completely inedible - too tough. Left most of food, complained and was charged full price. Disgusting, absolutely not recommended.
Suyuan Liu
This restaurant is very popular so we were told that a pre-booking is essential otherwise it may be hard for you get a seat.

Food is good with taste, view and reasonable price.

Dish recommended: steam bread 蒸馒头.

This is not the place if you are looking for excellent service. If you are looking for authentic Sichuan food look no further. Bar none the best Sichuan food in Hamilton. There's over 200 dishes here and if you are adventurous get the staff to recommend you some dishes and you will have quite the dining experience. If you don't like spicy food then this is not your place and don't bother ordering takeaway style dishes as this place is too good for that.
Donna
I had recently gone to this restaurant with two other people on Christmas day and I have to say that service was terrible. A friend pointed out we were the only non Asian in the restaurant but what was worse is that we watched the good service being given to other tables. So, we thought okay we were the last to be served so we thought the food must be really good. We almost cancelled half the order because they had taken so long because they were serving customers who came after us but we decided to wait because we wanted to try the dishes. But sad to say we could have gotten better food at a Takeaway restaurant for less in Auckland. Wasn't worth the wait...we should've have left after waiting so long and watching how they were serving people who came after us. The friend I came with said 'I saw the red flag when they put us by the toilets.'
Cath L
My dad orders from here at least once a week, and after visiting here I can see why!

A HUGE menu with so many dishes on offer. The food was tasty and filling, and great if you are a fan of spices. My favourite dish is something that resembles battered pork pieces (I can't recall the name). The meals are large and great for sharing. However, there are occasions where certain dishes are unavailable (much of this is to do with seasonal availability of meats or fish), but there's always something just as, if not more, yummy!

The actual restaurant can be very loud and busy (on any day of the week), but takeaways are just as good.
I very much recommend this restaurant if you are looking for great Chinese food in Hamilton.
Suzanne Andrew
I would give it another half point if I could. For people who love Asian food, I would highly recommend this place. Food was authentic and tasty and portion sizes are good for the price.
Carmella @ Easy Food Hacks
Looks are deceiving at Sichuan Style Restaurant. Firstly, I thought the place was called Hot & Spicy (!), and its kitschy Chinese décor held a sense of foreboding. The hint of the deliciousness to come was a photocopy of the chef’s certificate on the door, which heralds Chef Jian Wen’s honour as an ‘International Top-Level Chef’ by the League of Chinese Master Chefs. If you say that out loud, it sounds like a parody of a Marvel superhero group.

The second thing that proved that this was going to be a great evening was how busy it was at 5:30pm. It was nearly full and every empty table had a reserved sign on it; booking is essential at Sichuan Style if you want any chance of getting a table. Middle Brother who had moved to Hamilton a couple of months ago sold this place as the best Chinese food in ‘The Tron’.

If you’re a visual person, the entire menu in pictorial is on the iPad which is offered to you as well as the more traditional A3-size laminated menu. The menu is extensive, and there is much to sample.

There was a big group of us, so we tried a wide range of dishes. The steamed eggplant in spicy garlic sauce ($8.80) is fragrant and delicious. The lamb in cumin ($18.80) has a warm spicy kick. The stir-fried pork and leek in soy bean paste ($18.80) is sauteed thinly-sliced belly pork; the fatty morsels held the salty paste well. The chicken stew with gingko nuts soup ($28.80) one of Sichuan Style’s recommended dishes, and is served in a clay pot. Note: this is large enough for a dozen people.

Dan dan noodles are a famous traditional Sichuan noodle dish, and the version here ($9.80) is excellent. The noodles are served with bok choy, preserved mustard, roasted peanuts, marinated minced pork sprinkled with sesame seeds and spring onions in a savoury broth, and you mix all the ingredients before eating. This typically comes with chilli oil, but you can also ask for a mild version. The Sichuan style dumplings ($9.80) is my pick of the dishes. The savoury pork filling in slightly chewy dumpling skin is complemented perfectly by the spicy hot sauce, fried garlic and roasted peanuts. Perfect.

For more photos and the rest of the review, see: http://easyfoodhacks.blogspot.co.nz/2013/09/sichuan-style-restaurant-cbd-hamilton.html
