Review Punnet Cafe - Hamilton

Anna Goldfeder
We were lucky to visit on a quiet day - from reading other reviews it sounds like it gets busy but we were easily able to park, explore the grounds and get a table for lunch. Lunch was delicious and their coffee was excellent too. The staff were very friendly and the place is beautifully decorated. The shop is very well curated with local artisan goods as well as cool homewares and other trendy gifts. Would highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area.

Superb food! I was absolutely blown away by their bento bowl. Super fresh and delicious. The playground is phenomenal and right next to the tables so you can relax and enjoy yourself while the kids play. We I went out was really busy yet the did came out surprisingly fast. Beautiful table service and you order on the app so really easy.

I visited Punnet a couple weeks ago. When I was there I had a sweet caramel waffle. This waffle was nothing short of delicious. Perfect taste to texture ratio. It was sweet and fluffy and an amazing waffle overall. The staff there were amazing. Kind and helpful. The only reason I put 4 stars for service was because it wasn’t the most efficient place. But the atmosphere and food rounds it back up to a ten. Punnet is a great place for a quick bite or a nice catch-up with your mates. 5 star easily

Very nice country cafe/restaurant cozy and special atmosphere, nice decor, the breakfast was very good a bit pricy and small portions but a beautiful location with nice and friendly staff. The shop with all the products next door is nice too, worth a visit.

Oh boy, we’ve been here three days in a row as we loved the food, the friendliness of the staff, and the atmosphere. This is a strawberry farm, with a farm shop and a lovely cafe. We chatted for hours with the lady who assisted us. The food is excellent and the options are a bit exquisite, not to compromise the quality of the ingredients and the flavour. I’m taking home a pot of their tom chilli preserve, as it was easily amongst the best I’ve ever had. Would come back one day for sure!

Lovely rustic but chique ambiance, complete with a fire place and table app ordering. I got the big breakfast and enjoyed it - decent portion of bacon! Others got the Donburi bowls with were great too although the smoked salmon is fairly conservative compared to the crispy chicken. I'll be back to try some of the cream scones/donuts I saw in the pantry!

Been a few times and the food is exceptional. Really cozy atmosphere and great value considering portion size. Our fav breakfast spot for sure.

The miso mushrooms and strawberry lemon crumble waffles were both amazing. Great service on a busy weekend also. Well done!

The food was delicious and the staff did an amazing job of getting all the food for our very large party out at the same time, nicely hot and fresh. Lovely atmosphere and the best gift shop!

What a lovely place. Welcomed by lovely staff. Our waitress Erin I think, was lovely. The food was perfect. The breakfast was so good having that little touch of pork belly. The cafe is beautiful with a lovely playground for children. Even a lovely gift shop. Highly recommend. We will be back

Food (We had the fries and snickers slice?) was delicious! A little overpriced in my opinion but pretty good for kids. Didn’t like that you had to download the app if you were eating outside, it took 40 minutes to download so we just left

punnet is one of the most beautiful local cafes i’ve been to. it’s mostly a locals cafe and it has a great atmosphere. but it’s extremely overpriced to the point it’s why they’re failing. it’s not worth it even if the cafe is beautiful and the food tastes great. there are other places that offer good food for less, and it’s a shame because i really love punnet. i hope they’re still around the next time i’m there!

Great ambiance, excellent setting for family dining, children-friendly but food could be a hit and miss. I found my mochaccino with a tinge of sour taste. The brownstone which is basically the Eggs Benedict - the bacon and the Hollandaise sauce was just average. However, we still had a great dining experience because of the great vibes.

I went there in August for the first time and I was definitely underwhelmed. For my friend and I it cost over $50 just for the two of us. Neither of us could finish our meals not because there was lots of food but because it was so sickening. We waited about 50 minutes. They didn’t have the one thing I wanted on the menu. The food looked nice but that’s about it. There isn’t enough tables, we got put inside even though we asked to be outside and there were plenty of seats. Definitely not going back. Punet is overrated and they under deliver.

had an awesome experience! lots of tables available, the cafe and outside area is beautiful, staff were so friendly and helpful, food was super yum and came out quick despite it being their lunch time rush. quite far away from where i live in hamilton so unfortunately i won’t be going very often and only reason it’s not a 5 is the food was very pricey! only negative thing i have to say.

After ordering, they had to come to tell us two of the slices that we had ordered were NOT available @10am, after deciding we would just get our ice chocolates we were not impressed by the taste and I had a hair in mine. Absolutely disgusting. Great place for photos though, but would not recommend. 0/10. Signing out

I have seen the hype all over social media about this place so decided to try it out! I ordered a coffee and full breakfast. Food took 20 minutes but it looked great so I thought maybe it was worth the wait.. Wrong. Portion was small for the price and tasted bland. Coffee was okay.

Simply delightful! Such a beautiful cafe with loads of tables and an open fire. Great menu with really friendly staff. Ordered the mushroom soup with sourdough which was on special. It was absolutely divine! Not too salty and really good flavours. Also had a chai latte which was great! Definitely pop in - such a great place to be in any weather!

One of Hamilton's favourites, Punnet has never failed to deliver! Came back here after a fair hiatus and was glad to see nothing had changed. The rustic interior with its fireplace and the outdoor area with its lemon and lime trees provide a great ambience.

Today I had the Huevos Rancheros - excellent presentation and deliciously made! Had a cappuccino with it which was very well done too! My friend had a salted caramel milkshake which was stacked impressively and tasted just as delicious!

I've seen Punnet all over social media so decided to give it a go. Beautiful location but they need a sign out on the road. We stood at the sign that said 'please wait to be seated' for five minutes while waiters kept walking by, so we joined the queue at the cashier. We had a table booked, but it had been given away, so we waited for another. Cabinet selection was great but we decided to order from the menu. Turns out we were given old menus, and the food we wanted was no longer served. How does that even happen?
Our coffees arrived quickly and were great. While waiting for our food a guy came over and abruptly told us the area we were sitting in was closing soon- we hadn't even received our food yet. Waited half an hour for the food but it was awesome- a bit pricey but I guess that's what you can expect with organic products.
Unfortunately I won't be back. Firstly we were ignored, then our booking was forgotten, then we were basically told we needed to hurry up, and waited 30 minutes for food. Good food doesn't always make up for poor service.

The Food Reviewer.
To be fair, this cafe is no where near Temple View, it's not even close.
And why do our reviews have to be 140 characters long, whats wrong with short and sweet?

Amazing experience, great weather added to the ambience.

Service: next level, friendly banter, great vibe.

Coffee: Kokako is a great blend to start with, but only coupled with a good barista. I had a short macchiato and it was wonderful. A+++

Food: I had a "brownstone" which was essentially an eggs benedict. Bacon was perfect, crunchy but not over cooked. The hollandaise was a little runny for my preference and there wasn't very much of it. But the flavour was full.

What an amazing place for all ages and appetites. Beautiful location, wonderful friendly and helpful staff, superb food and coffee! We will be making sure we pop in every time we travel from Auck to Taupo. Lovely areas to sit, playground and shop with beautiful bits and pieces. 😍

Wow! I am blown away. Where do I even start?

Walking into the cafe, we were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to our table. The decoration, the brick wall, the wooden furnitures and fresh flower on the table just added to the dining experience.

There were lots of choices to choose from, all day breakfast and lunch menu were both available. Caters for all.

Coffee came quickly and was delicious.

The lamb rump was divine. Soft and melts in the mouth. The All day breakfast was filling and flavourful. And the Royale we also got, had a decent size of salmon fillet perfectly cooked. Nevertheless, our table was impressed with the meal we had.

Thanks for this awesome dining experience, Punnet cafe! Will sure to return again!

Well, main course of FOUR repeat FOUR scallops for 26 bucks is not only a ripoff it is an insult to the customers. I will never return to such a fleecing.

Lovely place to visit.. great Lil gift shop and very family friendly. There's been some changes and I like the more cabenet food options for meals and snack type options...I got a scone very moist and fresh. Great of a couples or groups as there's plenty of seating options. On our frist trip my coffee left a little to be desired but on second visit it was good. Hubby got and iced drink which was a nice change and well made. Overall I think the place has definatly improved over time and worth a visit.

Came here for lunch with a relative. Had been here before, but a lot has changed. They have now added on a shop and more seating.

I ordered the salmon carpaccio with a side of fries and a salted caramel smoothie. The other person ordered the strawberry watermelon salad. Did not have to wait long for meals to come out, but since our table did not have a table; it did create confusion for some staff. Received the meals and lived up to our standards, presented nicely and tasted good.

After the savoury dishes, we ordered from the cabinet. Both ended up with the raw strawberry cheesecake covered in dark chocolate, was nice for each cheesecake to be on a chilled plate.

It does pay to book as the place is very popular for both breakfast and lunch

Lovely location in the middle of a farm, with lots of things for the kids, great cafe restaurant building. Breakfast was very good, very fresh ingredients and good coffee. The only Bad mark is the raw cakes in the chiller which we took home, pretty disgusting especially the banoffie pie, from the name it should have toffee, but tasted vile, wouldn't buy raw cakes again from here or anywhere.

Food was not bad with pretty good service.
Exotic mushroom and hot smoked salmon was tasty. Living up to its standard.
Cheesecake were not too bad either.
But never never try their raspberry cocoa muffin. You will regret ever ordering it.

Punnet is in a lovely setting in Tamahere 5 mins off state highway 1 south of Hamilton. Decided to go there for lunch with a friend. It was busy but we found a table. The staff were very helpful and attentive. Great variety of food. We both decided on eggs on rosti with bacon. Food was yummy. We finished with coffee as you know I am very fussy with my coffee. I was not disappointed it was great. I would recommend a visit. It also has a great outdoor area for the kids.

A cafe with a lot of potential but fails to meet them.
Had to wait an hour and a half for the food to arrive and we were told the food would be 20 minutes. The staff did not seem sincere about the wait either.
Honestly, the food was very average which is annoying when we had to wait such a long time.
Wasted our time and money there. Won't be returning until I hear good reviews about the place.
However, the location is beautiful. This doesn't compromise for the poor food and extraordinarily long wait though.

Beautiful place with an interesting sounding menu. It's known to be quite busy and I was glad we had booked a table when we turned up and saw how busy it was. I had the kimchi pancakes which were quite tasty, BF had the jerk chicken, which he found bland & quite a small portion. Mum had the confit duck and had no complaints. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait on food, but it came out much faster than that, which was great. Unfortunately they completely forgot our coffees, which we again mentioned to the person serving us, only for them to be forgotten a second time. We ate our meals and had dessert afterwards, but the coffees never turned up, so we went without.

The food is presented really well, but for the prices they charge ($25 is the average for lunch), our expectation levels were pretty high, and unfortunately not met.

Only stopped in for a weekend coffee. Busy place with good looking cabinet food on the way in. These people obviously take pride in their product and have some interesting photos on their Facebook page of what they are capable of. Unfortunately on this occasion both our coffees were rather average and by the time they got to us through several closed doors things had started to slope down the sides a bit. Plenty of different areas to sit in here and I look forward to another visit to try some lunch and an improved rating

Punnet is a lovely, quaint cafe situated by a strawberry farm and a little gourmet shop (The Country Providore). There’s pick-your-own-strawberries to be had in the summer, but it’s still worth a visit in the winter just for the cafe and shop.

Over two visits, we’ve tried their signature cornflake french toast, eggs benedict with salmon, spiced apple waffles, and jamaican jerk chicken thigh – all of them are excellent and a welcome twist on standard cafe fare. Their brunch mains are rather more expensive than the average cafe’s, though, starting at a whopping $14 for the bagel and going up to $24.50 for the big brekkie. Their raw cheesecake, also, was a bit of a disappointment – besides being pricey, it didn’t taste much like cheesecake at all and had a ‘crunchy’ texture instead of the usual smooth and creamy one you’d expect. Service can be hit and miss – we enjoyed impeccable service on our last visit, but during our first visit it took almost an hour for our food to arrive.

All that being said, I still love this place, and would visit again – it has a rustic charm that many other cafes lack, and they are pretty innovative with their mains. Drop by the Country Providore on your way out for some gourmet cooking ingredients or an ice cream.

Came here with a group of 6 at the weekend and had to change our reservation due to out of towners. The phone staff was very accommodating. Got to the restaurant and though it was bustling we got to our table in no time. Everyone at the table was incredibly satisfied with their meals. The only thing that we could mention for improvement was our server was very stuck in his way of providing service. Didn't seem to care about his customers but rather get through the day. Will definitely be back for the food but this particular server seemed too cool for school.

It was our second visit to Punnet cafe, as it was Mother's Day holiday, so really long waiting time for the food, but glad that there was a huge play area, so my little boy was happy to stay playing for over an hour before the dishes ready.
We didn't make booking but staff were helpful to secure us a table, really appreciated that! Food were good too, definitely will come over again :)
Had lunch here for Mother's Day with two daughters and grandchildren. We didn't have a booking but were lucky to secure a table as someone had just cancelled. We were provided with complimentary nibbles (delicious) while we waited for our meals (delicious). The children were able to play on the playground while waiting also. We were also given complimentary cheesecake (delicious) at the end of our meal. The cabinet food selection was lovely so we had to have some to take away! Definately be back ☺️
