Review The District - Hamilton

A hidden gem on Te Rapa Straight. One of the best breakfast / brunches around. We went for classic poached and scrambled eggs with a side of bacon. Truely scrumptious and the coffee was great too. I am definitely going back for the mushrooms.

Came here for the first time today and was highly impressed! Gorgeously clean place, incredibly well done food and absolutely lovely staff! The two ladies out the front were so kind and smiley! Seemed very happy to be there <3

As visitors from out of town, we felt very welcomed by the staff and had a great choice of food from the menu. Love the Maori atmosphere from the music, to staff along with being able to order your coffee in Maori (with a prompt at the counter). Thanks for your hospitality :-)

Such friendly service, I had the best chai latte I’ve ever had here on Friday and the large size was only 20c more, was so worth it and is now the new go to cafe. Although I didn’t order food the menu looked great along with the cabinet food and I like that there is a range of options of toast with spreads as a cheap breakfast option!

Lovely food, great coffee and tea. Friendly efficient service. We will be back!

Stopped in for a late lunch, delicious food, excellent coffee, and a superb home made cookie. It took a whole to come considering I ordered cabinet food, but this was because they were crisping it up perfectly in the oven. This really made a difference and it was well worth the wait. There is a meeting room here you can book if you order food while in there. They close at 3

Clean and spacious space; beautiful food with heaps of options and yum; lovely staff with a very classic old kiwi fashion - warmth and generosity.

Had our planning meeting here, spent most of the working day enjoying the warm and friendly hospitality. The staff are so avcommodating. No cost for use of space. Food was fabulous. They even have healthy food options - spiced fish was delicious and only 280 calories!!!

Fantastic cafe. Great coffee, great food, great people and relaxed atmosphere all at perfectly reasonable prices. Hard to find these days. We will be back next time we're in the area. Thanks for your hospitality and keep up the great work.

Awesome cafe. Not too many gluten-free cabinet options. But they have amazing gluten-free savory muffins. They also have gluten-free menu options, which include some lovely crepes

Just stumbled across this place on our way to Auckland - lucky we did! Awesome food, truly delicious.

Excellent breakfast, speedy service and friendly staff.

Excellent brunch cooked to perfection. Service was great 👍

Staff were friendly and my pancakes were great, I love how they roll them up with bacon inside

Warm greeting on entry. Very welcoming vibe. Breakfast was the menu we ordered from. I'm very fussy when it comes to scrambled eggs but, thoroughly enjoyed. I would recommend The District as a regular place to visit. My son was very happy with his meal also. Thank you for a great start to the day.

Great full breakfast. Coffee was great. Friendly and fast services

Food here is amazing. Have had brunch here a couple of times and they’ve never disappointed me. Service is awesome too even on a public holiday, we still managed to get our food relatively quick given it was quite busy that day.

Great mocha (prob one of the best in Hamilton), solid food. Definitely would recommend and would come back for more! Fried foods were great, one of the sliders could be better, but an overall good experience :3

Service was ok. Meals took 1hr to serve. Mine was the Thai lamb curry and was very average. The beer battered fries were nice and the omelette ok too. Not a place I would return to.

came here a few Days ago with my partner, such a strange place for a cafe, but I absolutely love the vibe it gives off and love the style.
the service was really good and we automatically got served which I like! It took me forever to order because the menu sounds so good we both just wanted to try everything. in the end both of our meals were tasty and we both walked away super happy. although it ended up being a bit pricy it felt as though it was worth it for the experience.

I got an early lunch here whilst passing through Hamilton. The food is alright, nothing spectacular but still quite nice. The service is what stood out for me though, the staff was super friendly and nice which definitely made up for the food.

I've seen this place all over Instagram so had to give it a go. The entrance is a bit confusing - there are two; we went in the wheelchair entrance which was a bit dark. There were no staff, so we just found a table outside.

The wait for our drinks was a bit long, considering the place wasn't busy. We ordered crepes but felt they were a tad overpriced- $16.50 for a couple of crepes and three very small sides. You had to pay extra for banana and bacon (also overpriced for the amount received). But they tasted great.

I'm keen to try more of the menu, so will be back :)

Awesome all day breakfast, service is amazing , didn't take long for the food to be ready. Nice and quiet, not very busy before 12 pm. Recommended!

Great decor, clean and beautiful food. Their attention to detail shows they care about providing a good service. Very friendly staff too. Great cafe!

Passing through Hamilton on a road trip and stopped here for some lunch. The location was easy to find and when we walked in it had a general cafe feel to it. The staff were friendly and very helpful a little slow on clearing the table but overall the service was good. I ordered the greasy juice of the day which was the best juice I've ever had! And the pulled pork burger, which was so yum the fries were crispy and the burger was the perfect size. Would definitely recommend this place 👍🏼

Went here with two friends, with one ordering from the cabinet and the other and I ordering off the menu. All food and drinks came out in reasonable time and had friendly service. I ordered the salt and pepper squid salad which was very tasty although could of done with a bit more mayo. The creamy pesto pasta was also very tasty with a generous amount of both mushroom and chicken. The ambience and food made it a very enjoyable dining experience.

I am here pretty much five days a week, the food is scrummy (both sweet & savoury), my coffee is always hot and the staff are always smiling.

Unfortunately, this place appears to be going downhill. We have visited somewhat regularly for over a year now, and I wrote a glowing review for them previously.

We have always known that their kitchen closes at 2pm, which is fine. However, recently we have twice arrived prior to that time and were ignored until we tried to flag a waitress down to place an order, after which we were told that the kitchen was closed (before 2pm). The most recent time (27th August), we arrived at 1.30pm on a Saturday and the same thing happened!

The lack of consistency is disappointing, especially as it is extremely unusual for a large cafe to close that early. I used to enjoy this place due to their food and somewhat inventive menu, but won't be back in a hurry.

Wow! Thank you so much for the beautiful breakfast. In Hamilton today for daughters netball so husband and I decided to look up on zamato to see what was around. Met the owner on the way in who was very friendly indeed. Mm good vibes so far. Ordered pretty quickly. Coffee arrived first nice and hot for a foggy morning. Quickly followed by the amazing breakfast. I had the salmon Benny which wasn't a couple of measly pieces of salmon but a whole piece!! Husband has the District Fry! Awesome! From the perfect poached eggs to the delicious tomato jam! Spot on friendly service! Will definitely be back next time we are in Hamilton! Thanks

had brekkie at The District last week, went for the Huevos rancheros tortillas. very very nice. the smokiness of the chipotle with the avo and feta. the finely sliced chorizo was a bit weird but it worked ok. coffee was good and staff were nice.

I came here earlier this year and only now have I gotten round to writing up this review (sorry sorry!).

We stopped by for lunch on our way back to Auckland and my partner and I had ordered 2 different salads for lunch.
The Smoked duck and watercress salad with cranberries, cashews and orange with a raspberry vinaigrette looked amazing and tasted wonderful too. However I do wish the duck was more smokey but it went very well with the fruits in the salad, which made it more refreshing to eat. The Chicken salad (G.f) had a generous serving and the avocado had coated the chicken, giving it a butter smooth finish and the lettuce was crunchy and fresh too.

I also ordered a Chai Spicy latte which was the beginning of my journey to falling in love with chai latte's!! It had the perfect blend of spice and sweetness, and it had a velvety smooth texture too. I highly recommend trying it!

Additionally, the staff were super friendly, plus the food and coffee here is great! But price-wise it is very similar to Sydney cafe/brunch menu's, so don't expect cheap eats from here!

Read more on my blog:www (dot) miss-sennnaa.blogspot (dot) com.au/2016/06/black-water-rafting-brunching-at.html

Went there for brunch. Got eggs benefit for both of us. Meals came quite slow or maybe we were just famished.
The hot chocolate was great but the meal was quite small portioned. Otherwise I'd give it 4.5 stars.

Had Sunday brunch here with hubby and son.
Coffees: Hubby asked for largest flat white, bowl if possible - waitress said no problem but coffee was same size as others ordered, she should've just said they only have one 'large' size instead of giving him false hope!
Bagel: Too many capers that distracted from the flavour - should've probably asked to have them left off :( Salmon was a little overcooked in parts
Eggs Benny: nothing special for the price, toasted english muffin, no extra spinach or anything as you would normally expect, (just a few bits of lettuce on top) eggs were almost overdone . Serving size seemed a lot smaller than we have had in other cafes.
Fry: Again, eggs almost over poached, I shared my rosti, sausages and bacon with the boys, also pricey in comparison to other 'big breakfasts'. Tasty, but nothing special for what was paid.
Overall, it was nice enough with friendly staff, but wouldn't be my first choice in terms of value.

Stopped by on a road trip to the Waikato and had a satisfying brunch. We shared the District Fry - their version of a big breakfast and the Gingerbread French Toast.

The District Fry was my favourite - all elements were well cooked except for one poached egg which was cooked through and the bacon being a bit overdone. The mushrooms were creamy and the toulouse sausage was really tasty. The rosti was nice and crispy, as was the toast.

The Gingerbread French Toast was special - gingerbread cake fried with battter and Canadian maple syrup soaked into the 'toast'. If you love sweet breakfasts, you will love this. The vanilla mascarpone helped to cut through the sweetness as did the rhubarb compote but overall I found it too sweet. I definitely wouldn't have been able to eat it all by myself.

I also had a smoothie which was refreshing on a hot summer's day. I found a bit of unblended banana in my smoothie but it was mostly well blended.

The decor was industrial as the name gives away. The food came quickly and service was good.

A big spacious cafe with industrial decor and light bulbs. Noticed it is beside a city fitness gym. Perfect for after gym catch ups:)

We ordered the district fry and the gingerbread French toast. When We were asked how we wanted our eggs in the district fry, my friend misunderstood and nodded her head (because the title had fry it in) I found it hilarious and just said poached eggs please. But the waiter didn't have a sense of humor.

When our meals came, we did the egg test an one of the eggs was not runny! Overall, the bacon was dry and hard but the rest such as creamy mushroom, home made hash was delicious.

Now to the gingerbread - this dish is definitely for gingerbread lovers. Very unique dish as it has a cake texture and is drowned in maple syrup! Very rich and glad I shared it with a friend. Maybe ask for syrup on the side?

We were served quickly and provided water. Good service.

Had an amazing breakfast here delivered on a hot plate, delicious home made grainy toast and hollandaise with perfectly poached eggs smoky bacon herby rosti and creamy mushrooms. Coffee was strong and delicious too. This could be the new place to go for breakfast in Hamilton and now finally open Sundays!

Great place to go for breakfast or lunch when you are out te rapa way. Super friendly staff and well prepared food. Always something tempting in the cabinet. Have still to try their evening menu but have heard good things

Such a great place for breakfast. Great music, friendly staff and very tasty food. Everything was very organised and despite being very busy they dealt with every customer quickly and were not stressed. Food was amazing (i had the district fry) Only thing was the waitress kept asking every five minutes if we were ok for drinks when we had water and coffees already - seemed like a habit rather than an observation. Otherwise really really good!

The District is a family fave and we were stoked to hear they were open for brunch and lunch on Fathers Day. The place was fully booked but with plenty of staff on we didnt have to wait long for service or food. I loved the selection of tea and the cookies and cream milkshake was the most amazing thing! The brunch menu had a great selection of things and I chose my favourite breakfast meal, Huevos Rancheros with chorizo. The dish came out looking a lot different to what im used too; it was like a deconstructed version. The crispy tortilla was so tasty and the perfectly cooked eggs topped it off. Everything on the menu was very reasonably priced and all four of the dishes were so nicely presented, it was obvious a lot of care went into this food. We finished off with coffee which was good. I also loved the music selection throughtout our meal. Hardly anything to fault but its hard to give a perfect 5!

Decided to go out of the CBD for lunch. A friend recommended District. I decided to head out but didn't get there till 1.50pm unfortunately I was told that the kitchen was closed and only cabinet foods was available. "Really" I was very disappointed I heard so much about the food. So I settled for a sausage roll and salad which was great. The coffee was spot on. And the service was attentive.

The District is one of my favourite cafes in the Tron – conveniently located, consistently good food, a wide range of teas (yep, I’m a tea drinker at heart, even though I don’t mind the occasional coffee), and great service. Their breakfast menu is more extensive than most – they have the standard stuff (e.g. eggs benedict and bagels), as well as more exotic choices such as huevos rancheros or crepes. Ditto with the lunch menu – you can choose from a wide variety of stone cooked pizzas, burgers, or standard lunch fare (e.g. fish n chips, pasta).

Just got back in from the district, first time caller so to speak. Good semi outdoor deck on the way in and a nice industrial feel for the inside ambience. They make a good Laroma flat white here, nice friendly service and excellent ceramic jugs for the table water. Cabinet food all very obviously house made, excellent comprehensive range and good looking but reasonably heavy on the pricing, love the table menu. Counter layout seems to cause a bit of congestion with just the one serving area there were people piled up all along it but at least that shows they are popular. Great parking on the doorstep. These folk obviously have some good skills and this cafe is a great asset for Te Rapa.@

We have been consistently impressed with everything we have tasted at The District. From the burgers to the pizzas, the pastas to the breakfast fry ups, it has all been superb. Highly recommended.

Nice atmosphere
Great venue for social occasions (birthday, anniversary, etc)
Interior decor is very industrial
Food was surprisingly good I cant wait to try other items on their menu
Average price range
Location is tricky but I like that it's not in the CBD area Less noise and crowd

We came for lunch as a group and enjoyed our meal very much. Great place to visit. Will be back to try out the rest of the menu. Our group also enjoyed their lunch. Very tasty and filling.

Awesome pizzas! The pork belly one in particular is mouth-wateringly delicious. Got ID'd for buying a pint of cider with the food, though, which was weird for a lunch meal. Nevertheless, will endeavor to come back and try the breakfast menu.

Lovely food, great service but overpriced.
Turkish garlic bread, confit duck with crispy wontons, sticky date pudding, creme brulee, eye fillet steak dish and scotch fillet steak, corona and good George ipa. All were nice dishes, but $172 for total order!! Would've been good to see price per item on receipt before we paid.

The owners of this restaurant have carried over their skills and expertise from Suburbia to The District. They value their customers and are most hospitable and friendly. Their food is creative and delicious, never been disappointed and visit here on an average of once a month. The prices for food and wine are reasonable and fair, unlike many other restaurants we frequent. I look forward to them developing their outdoor area more so that it can be an all year round dining experience. We are looking forward to our first 'night' dining at The District tonight. Will keep you posted. Cherry.

I have to say I was so impressed with this restaurant, not only is it quirky in style and different, the quality of the food was amazing, we took my friend from the UK there for lunch, I was so happy that everything was so great, only thing was we found the place to be very cold, however on mentioning this to staff they obliged by shutting doors and turning heating on, so this is not a complaint, more of an observation, it is always nice to be greeted on a cold winters day in to a lovely warm environment.
Will certainly be highly recommending this to everyone I know and cannot wait until we return.

Lunch for two on Saturday the 20th July 2013. First timers, but had been previous customers at Suburbia.

Actual cafe is very nicely decked out. Good atmosphere and layout. Small deck for those who want to be outside.

Staff were excellent i.e. friendly, attentive and helpful.

Food - we only had some cabinet food but was prepared very well.
Nothing on the lunch menu really jumped out at me, but that of course is subjective.

No reason not to give the fully five stars, and recommend others visit.

Me and my wife we're really lucky to have found this gem of a place, accidentally stumbled upon this cafe and bar while looking for a place to eat near Te Rapa. We had lunch there after our civil wedding and we were not disappointed. First off, staff were very accommodating and gracious, Sue,Becky handled our reservations and Sioned did a top notch service for us. Food was delicious, perfectly seasoned and well presented. Not to mention servings were sufficient and the price really reasonable. We really had a good time . Hats off to the chef and to the people who make this place truly special. Thanks guys! We will definitely be back for more!

This place is great. Good barristas. Food is excellent, love the pork belly pizza. Good service to match.

Good place to go for a wine after work. Has some good beers on tap.

As Aucklanders that are well travelled we recently moved down to the Waikato and we are really impressed by the quality of The District.

It is up there with Opera Kitchen, Hastings and Smiths, Napier.

Prefer The District to Mavis as plenty of parking.
Jason Cook
Seriously this is our new place to eat. Staff are awesome, Best meals we have tasted for a long time. Other places could learn a few tips from these guys!! The service and food is just perfect!!!

Keep up the great work guys!!!

This place is definitely my new favourite. The staff are all absolutely lovely. Even a drop in for your morning coffee & muffin is such a pleasant experience. I have been getting quite hooked on their take-away salad range since this place has opened. They are all so yummy! Clearly a lot of love goes into creating these, the flavours are quite amazing & theres something new everyday. I have also enjoyed a nice, relaxing breakfast with my partner - they open at 7am so we were able to avoid the rush and eat in peace and admire the surroundings. A lot of thought has gone into decorating this place, it looks fantastic. I had the crepes and he had the big breakfast - both were flawless! I really appreciate the attention to detail with the presentation. The chef is clearly top class and teaching the team well. Such a great start - i look forward to seeing this place grow. Keep it up!
