Review Porky's Takeaways - Hokitika

Best yummiest fish and chips in NZ! Stopped off here on the way home up the west coast and was surprised with how busy yet communicative the staff were. We ate our food on the beach and almost went back for more. Very grateful to have such nice people bringing food to us all.

Our driver said this was the best place to try out the Whitebait fritters, so that's exactly what I did. I'd never had one before so I didn't know quite what to expect. I don't think this will become a favorite but I do like to try new things wherever I go. I would agree that its totally worth trying at least once in your life!

Was sceptical as this place had mixed reviews but honestly amazing fish and not too much batter! I had blue cod and my partner had Turbot and it was lovely. Not too greasy and although the chips aren't 'chippy' chips I preferred them. Very yum meal

Even though there isn't a lot of choice in Hokitika, the 'Townchip' is great for fish, chips or burgers. We got two burgers, the Full Monty and Bog Standard. Full Monty had everything, lots of filling! My wife doesn't really rate burgers but she rated the Bog Standard well. At $8 the Bog Standard is a great choice. Friendly service and they were quick making the food!

Best fish and chips I've had in years. The fish melted in your mouth and the chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Highly recommend!

Best fish and chips I have had for a long time. Staff were friendly, reasonably priced and cook so well. Wish I lived nearer - I would definitely have fish and chips on a weekly basis.

Yummy fish and chips, very affordable and decent quantities. Has lots of different options. Would definitely go back.

One of the best Fish Burgers I've had for ages! Filled with lettuce, tomato and beetroot and tartar sauce. Yum. Whitebait pattie and chips got thumbs up from hubby too.

A return visit after the first a few months back. The fish burger was delicious last time so worth another visit for another and it didn't disappoint. Service was nice, quick and friendly. Tomato sauce and vinegar available to purchase for those needing add-ons for their chips. Plenty of seating available near by outside.

The chips is awesome. The fish also really good. Easy to park and they have outdoor tables to enjoy the food.

Good fish and chips, well cooked and tasty. However the portions are quite small so get more than you think you'll need. Also, we got given the wrong order - not ideal!!

Excellent place to visit if you're after good quality fish and chips. There is nothing too flash about this shop, so I wasn't expecting anything great, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the blue cod with chips. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a nice crisp batter on the outside and melt in your mouth fish on the inside. Chips were very slightly undercooked, but they were still delicious. This place does get quite busy, but they serve customers really quickly. I would definitely come back here again. Very reasonably priced too.

Do not have the Whitebait patties! It was as someone says above like a scone with the odd bit of whitebait in it. When I pay $9 for 1 fritter I expect it to be packed full! If I was a visitor to NZ and wanted to try West Coast Whitebait I would be very disappointed if I brought it from here! I'm luv Whitebait but this was terrible!

The previous reviews must have been done before a change of ownership. This place is a disgrace. Hugely overpriced and nothing is fresh. The cod looked and tasted like it had been packed and battered in Alaska and taken the slow train to New Zealand. The enormous whitebait fritter may have come in from China where they clearly don't have many whitebait. It was more like a flat fried scone that tasted like cooking oil. Apparently there is another place which is much better in Hokitika. I suggest you find it. Seriously worst ever fish and chips.

Porky's Takeaways in Hokitika would seriously have to have some of the best fish and chips in NZ, maybe on the entire planet. The selection of fish is superb but the chips are out of this world, Chunky, crispy spud chips just like mother used to make, cooked in real-deal fat so there's no foul oil taste to worry about. So even if you are health conscious it's worth it every once in a while to let loose and Porky's is definitely the place to do it, I mean, aren't fish and chips just the perfect delivery vehicle for a good dose of salt ?? Service is friendly and efficient and you would have to be a negative whining whinging nitpicker to find fault here. The shop is clean and neat, super-well presented and they have the most amazing signs and menu boards, all done in the old fashioned style, clearly done by a sign writer who must be extremely talented, truly amazing and worth taking your camera. Enjoy.

Best meal and friendliest service we had on our two-week holiday road trip!

Great chips from this place, almost historic in just how good they were. However everything else is a bit Fawlty Towers. The queue goes out the door its so popular but its a combination of those waiting to collect or those waiting to order, with no-one knowing where to stand or if their order has been called. Lots of people were waiting only then realizing their order was already sitting there and ready to go. The owner appeared at one point with his mouth full and wiping the crumbs away, so at least he got his dinner at the busiest time of the night. Fish was dry and seemed double cooked , Oysters were undercooked with floury batter and were poor overall especially given the cost. Would definately return though for the chips and to expereince Basil, Sybil and the crew working their magic, just don't go in there if youre already famished as you will be waiting a while

Their chips are the best.

They seem like that they have the certain way to fry it well.

The saltiness and crispiness are perfect.

I had their whitebait toast, too. The toast range is also recommended. Simple, but it's just right of butter inside.

Though I didn't have fish, I can tell that must be good.
