Review Shamrock Cottage - Howick

文華
Ordered egg benny but disappointed with the poached eggs came with the well-cooked boiled eggs, not sure if we went on a very busy morning on that day or not but saw the other table ordered the same dishes but the poached eggs looked fantastic. Otherwise the omelette was awesome with great portion size.

We just had the most amazing birthday high tea for my 7 year old here! Amazing food, people and atmosphere! The kids had a wonderful time telling stories and eating cakes. Thank you Judith for giving the little girls a real tea party. 🙂

After finding the howick cafes packed we decided to take a bit of a wander to see what these tearooms were like. It was well worth the extra walk and the location is perfectly placed for views and the lovely garden around the front and back. The front balcony was a lovely cool spot out of the sun. The food options are equally fabulous with awesome menu and a cabinet full of great cakes and savoury options. We stuck with the cabinet as it was morning tea and enjoyed both a caramel slice and apricot and date slice. The coffee was also tasty and meant we thoroughly enjoyed this stop. We will be back to try the other options soon Edit: have come back many times and the food is always great, finally took a photo before starting to share

Would literally sell my soul for this Cafe. Gutted it's closed but best Coffee, hot chocolate, chocolate cake and toasted sammies in New Zealand. Maybe best Cafe in New Zealand? Cannot wait for them to reopen. Would highly recommend to anyone +great service, kind wait staff and a super cute cottage vibe 11/10. Last I was in I had to call the manager just to tell her how good it was, she was lovely too!

Always consistently good food here! Staff are friendly, food is well-presented and there are vegan & gluten-free options available. Relaxing courtyard area out back and if you sit out there, watch out for those cheeky hungry sparrows!!🤣

A house modified cafe. Good customer service and Ambience. All the dishes were good. Very good experience overall. Also, Howick beach is very close to this place.

I love love love this place. The coffee made by Max is the best coffee I've had in Auckland. Their food is very fresh and homemade, both regular dishes and a rotating menu. The food tastes wonderful and the gluten free lemon cake and goldilocks porridge is amazing!!! The cottage has seating outside looking over the sea, in a courtyard or inside by the fire when it's cold. It can be crowded at times but it also can be slower so it is hit and miss. But the turn around is usually decent. This is the place I always go to and 100% worth a visit. I've attached a photo of the specials menu they had a little while ago - the French toast was to die for.

Shamrock cafe is housed in an old fencible building with smallish rooms filled with tables it has a large courtyard which is gorgeous when its warm. The food is home made and a cut above standard cafe fare, but the small rooms do tend to make it very loud when its busy.

Enjoy a lot sitting outside at the backyard on a sunny day. Lovely cafe.

My first time visiting this place. Its like stepping into time, i love this cosy place. Lovely staff and service. The homemade food was really tasty. I got the homemade chicken and vegetable soup.

Brilliantly serene setting, close to beach. Lovely food and quick service. All day breakfast and wide variety of yummy confectionery.

Sorry, the food wasn't that great and a little overpriced for what we ordered

Nice and cosy. Has a nice outdoor sitting at the back and loves their muffin, moist and tasty

Historical cottage close to beach, good cake and service. The wood fire is on so good for the cold days

I haven't been to Howick in years, and must admit drove past the tearooms because it blends in to the residential homes on the street. It is a historical site, one of many in Howick, and as such was quite tight in terms of tables, and chairs. It felt like visiting a friends home who invited all the neighbours for brunch and tried to accommodate us all by puting as many tables, and chairs in each room as one could. This meant manoeuvring around the tables was awkward at times and in our case the whole table having to get up to accommodate a guest who needed to use the amenities. Conversation was kept light because of the layout also. The food was excellent I opted for the French toast, from memory it had a few macaroon type swirls that I personally didn't like the texture of, and didn't add anything to the dish for me. The coffee was hot, and strong, with the service being a bit disjointed because of the mid morning rush, as a result our table ate at different times. Living in Central Auckland where you are spoilt for choice in terms of excellent cafe food, by the time you left this place it had cast the spell of feeling that you were in a friends cottage who cooked your food with love, which makes you want to visit that friend again, and again despite the close quarters.

We go here for breakfast regularly. Coffee is good and breakfast is filling. Their Chelsea buns are delicious! It's also dog friendly which we love!

One of our go-to spots, tucked away from the main shopping street, consistently good food, especially cakes, all in a lovely historic building

The garlic mushrooms on ciabatta from here are next level! Highly recommend them 🤤

Lovely cozy place a short walk from howick village. Good place for brunch. I quite liked my salmon and courgette tart but unfortunately the mango iced tea wasn't great. I can only describe it tasting like bubblegum sugar water and nothing like mango which is rather unfortunate.

Delicious food, beautiful desserts on display and lovely service. We couldn't resist the cakes even though we were stuffed from our breakfast, so we bought a vanilla slice and chocolate mud cake for takeaway and they were yum! Only thing is, the outdoor seating area needed some more shade and the table was wobbly.

Easy to miss this beautiful old villa if you’re not looking, but that’s part of its charm. They’ve done a great job of keeping the building as is, and utilising the back area as an open courtyard which is a lovely place to sit in the sun.
They have a range of cabinet food as well as a menu.
The eggs Benedict on potato cake was great, and it was served on a hot plate which is even better! I always wonder why cafes put hot food onto a cold plate.
Coffee was well made & service was friendly.

A local cafe within a characteristic cottage house, outside looks a bit old, inside feels cosy like home, nice place to catch up with friends.

As a small business myself I love to support other small or local businesses. This cafe is a prime example of how to take pride in what you do. All of the amazing food they sell is homemade. I tried their healthy apple crumble and was so impressed by the description the chef gave me. Always a high standard of food and service at Shamrock!

I loved the food here! My apple crumble porridge was sooo delicious and my partner told me his pancakes were lovely. The atmosphere is very cosy and lovely - I can imagine it would be even nicer in the summer time. I just wish it wasn't so far away, otherwise I'd be here every weekend!

Not a bad option, but there's plenty of places in Howick now I would recommend before Shamrock.

It doesn't have as much of a cottagey feel as I would expect (I know its an old historic cottage, so maybe this criticism is unfair, but it doesn't feel like that inside, and I don't think it lends itself particularly well to being a cafe- or maybe its just how its set up, lots of tables, feels quite cramped and tired, I also visited on a pretty miserable day weather wise so maybe that had something to do with it...) I think being outside would definitely be a draw card during summer as there is a nice deck in the front at courtyard at the back.Food and coffee seemed expensive, and nice tasting but not amazing. Good selection of cakes however. I will be back to try their High Tea however and will see if this changes my review.

The dining rooms are quite interesting with different decor on each wall. It's quite cute with a vintage feel.

The food menu was a bit boring or me so we went with the cabinet treats. The cakes are very pretty and the texture is moist. I like how they have a thick layer of frosting and is served with a side of cream.

Price is reasonable. The prices for their beverages are your usual prices.

This is a really nice, cosy place for a brunch, located in a beautiful cottage. They have great cabinet food and friendly service. Lovely place to go to for a catch up.

I had the best breakfast I have ever had in NZ! The service was great and it's great to see a cafe that local young people. I have been here a few times and I blame the cakes for the growth in my waistline. Everything is home made and this is so refreshing after seeing the same tired cakes in every Auckland eatery. My only wish is that they produce a cookbook so I can have a crack at their Batten berg or chocolate cake!

Love this place. The food is authetically home-made. The chocolate cake is the bomb!!! Cant go wrong with a caramel nut slice, the eggs are beautifully orange (free range) . The corn fritters are a special weekend treat! The staff are so friendly, max the barista is a talented young man. The bakers are creative geniuses. It like a piece of heaven in howick.

Found this place last week and fell in love with it instantly!! Its got a homely feel to it. The food and service was superb. Going to his very soon ;)

Always a winner here the food is constantly good, all homemade and the baking just yummy. My only complaint would be that the coffee is not that good but I dont think it is the barista but more the coffee they use, always tastes weak. I do appreciate that they serve tea in tea cups makes such a difference. If you are wanting to visit this cafe with a group of friends I suggest you reserve a table as it gets busy with the locals.

I enjoy the atmosphere here, ideal for a kick back brunch. I've come here a couple of times and the coffee here is good and really like the breakfast they serve, especially the eggs benedict

My lovely girlfriend brought me here for a brunch in early April. They have lovely cakes, tarts, pies, quiches, and a variety of other meals. Everything seems to be store made, and you can tell because the actual baking itself has little imperfections - similar to what you'd expect when you make a cake at home. I actually find this really appealing, and contributes to the aesthetics of the cottage atmosphere - which is supposed to be one of the oldest in Howick. Hope to come back sometime soon.

First time here and we weren't disappointed. The food was great, I had the carrot cake which was absolutely delicious. The decor is quirky and interesting, which gave us a few things to chat about. Service was good too. All in all its definitely worth a visit

A nice little place for lunch. It was inside the historic cottage. Food was okay but a bit pricey if adding the salad (extra $6) to the counter food & the salad was dry with no dressing. I had Thai fish cake. There was no Thai flavour to it and wasn't even served with sweet and chili sauce. The coffee was okay but was not hot to my standard. Minimal service - you had to go to the counter to order and to get your own water.

BEST coffee in Howick! Cannot give this place enough praise. Go there frequently and always have fantastic service and the food is amazing.

The food is delicious and I don't think there are enough words to express how I feel about the cake selection. I have always enjoyed visiting Shamrock Cottage, and will continue to do so. It is consistently good!

Always love this cute little cottage for brunch. It has so much character, nestled in a lovely neighbourhood of Howick. The food was pretty good too. The orange and almond cake was yum as was the salmon and courgette tart. Coffees were good too. Nothing mindblowing but together with the atmosphere and vibe, I'd give it a high rating and definitely come back.

lovely coffee and vegetarian option. Wonderful dessert, can't ask for more. The apple crumble cake is so nice and tasty. I love it love it. Yeah

I have been here on 3 seperate occasions now, the last visit was today. We brought friends with us for brunch. All 4 of us were very happy with the service, food and the nice staff. We love how u can enjoy your food in peace without being harrassed by staff or being rushed out when finished. We sat chatting for that long we stayed for coffees and cakes too. Love the home baking experience and will be going back many more times in the future.

Food was AMAZING but service wasn't up to standard. We sat out the front and was nice but would have liked to see staff return to our table to see if everything was going alright. I visit ample amounts of cafe's around auckland and most of the staff return and ask if everything is going well.. Nice food and coffee... but service terrible.

This is a really nice local for us - gorgeous setting, yummy looking cabinet food and a very well priced menu. Great for any special occassion.
The only issue is the coffee... They have been getting better since I started coming here almost 2 years ago but still needs some work - I would happily change my review if there was some consistent improvement.
All in all, still a nice place to come and relax :)

Nice place. Staff are super friendly, and food is nice as well. There is a lot of choice (they had 3 different types of caramel slices when we went), and on first visit it seems to be a great place to catch up over a coffee.

Great service, delicious home made cakes in a historic setting. What more could you ask for. Have been several times

Looking for breakfast/brunch places out East Auckland
Our friends suggested Shamrock Cottage

Driving down Selwyn you could miss the place as it is nestled amongst homes

The cottage is said to be the second oldest in manukau.
We arrived 10 minutes from opening and as expected it was cold. The counter was full of sweet baked goods and some savouries.

I wanted to try something off the menu, however the selection was minimal so Ee ordered the Eggs Benedict with salmon and wilted spinach and the Shamrock big breakfast.
Serving sizes were large and nothing to complain about. If you want your everyday eggs Benedict then this place does it.

Then we felt like something sweet so we opted for something on the counter - Ginger crunch slice, lots of ginger and perfect to kick the immune system

Don't think we will go back as it was lacking
Not bad for a local
