Review The Corner Bar & Restaurant - Howick

The Duvals
In my very humble opinion this is one of the nicer places to enjoy a cocktail in Howick. There is their special cocktails menu but they will also make old favourites. Their black forest Expresso is my go to. The menu has something for everyone on it. We normally order a number of their sides and share because there is a lot of yummy stuff and we want a bit of everything. I highly rate their fries, perfect texture, served hot and crispy. They also have their blackboard special. Worth looking at these before the menu because they are normally pretty good. Overall a great place. I have been a number of times and will continue to go. If I was going to give it any criticism, they occasionally close early. We have been inside and they have turned people away at 9pm. I am not sure if the reasoning but it’s a bit weird to turn someone away that wants to spend money in your establishment.

I see why this place is always so busy. Went in today being 1st customer of the day (2 of us), the place is run well and the kitchen delivers! Cannot fault them, service, food and atmosphere. We had Bao Buns, Pork Belly, Green Curry Muscles, Pulled Pork Loaded Fries and beverages...on tap beer is fresh and good! Will definitely go in again, highly recommended.

Smashing cocktails! The cherry sour was Devine 🍒- $19.50 ea but I just had to have two! I had it without sugar syrup and it was silky smooth yet brightly piquant. The food was just OK - the pork belly was the best dish we sampled with lots of meat and a beautiful balance of flavours but the skin wasn’t crispy and the fat wasn’t rendered off enough to my liking. The scallops were disappointing - the scallop flavour was suspiciously strong and pungent as opposed to subtle and the profile was more salty and oily than light and slightly sweet. The bao were also a bit underwhelming - not bad overall but the karaage batter could have been crispier, darker, more flavourful and there weren’t enough pickled elements to balance the sweet bun and creamy mayo. I prefer a bit of spice, crunch and vinegar - they were bland. The service was absolutely five star 🤌 Our wait person was so attentive, professional and kind. It’s a great atmosphere with beautiful architectural features - if a little cramped. All round great spot to spend a cheeky afternoon sip and bite.

Was pleasantly surprised at the food on offer here. Unfortunately we had a large group of gluten free people with us and they were unable to offer gluten free fries. Pork belly, hawker roll, buttermilk chicken and beef short rib were all a hit. Not a cheap night out but for those of us who could eat gluten we enjoyed the variety. Miniature dessert platter was a bit of a disappointment. Looked better than it tasted.

A nice bar in Howick that serves tapas style food to share. The tapas menus are located on the wall but they do have a standard menu with drinks and bar snacks. We grabbed a few things to share. Of the lot that we tried, I quite liked the scallops with the sweet potato puree. The other items like the smoked ribs and the chicken tulips were also nice. I have a fairly big appetite so I thought that the portions were small, but that is expected for tapas. It would be a nice place for snacks but probably not for a full meal as it could get quite pricey.

Great food, and great service and a very large range of drink/special cocktails. There are specials held in the bar depending on the day.
Catherine Chee 卡特林徐
Had a relaxing lunch. Hope the menu will have more chef cook hot food variety instead of fried food.
Lynn Liu
Went there on a valentine night. The wagyu sliders are awesome! Others dishes are quite common...maybe we will try bao and tacos next time~

Great little spot right on the corner of Howick, nice on a sunny day to sit and look out at the water enjoy a few cocktails and tapas. Prices can be on the high side, depends on what you want. Staff always nice and friendly. Dog friendly outside.
Nick “nikrox” crozier
Really well priced food with a great chef. Probably the best value for money gastro pub in howick
Rhea Elavia
Super lovely place, nice staff and good drinks ;)
Stanley GOLIATH
Amazing food...great service...yummy cocktails and tasty mulled wine!!!!
Wayne Strong
They have authentic Tennants beer for starters. That would be enough for me, but the food and service are excellent as well. The salt and pepper squid is a stand out.

My mum and I had an amazing experience here, the bar tenders, especially the woman with the dangly earrings (didn’t quite catch her name!) were so accommodating to us and made us feel welcome. The food we had was great (just bar snacks as it was late) and came quickly, and the cocktail I had was reasonably priced and came served in a huge glass/bowl. All in all a delightful experience and we would definitely come back if we visited Howick again 😊
Michael Davidson
A bit pricey for the size of the food I got, but it was incredibly delicious. Probably a place I'd go to for a treat every few months, but I doubt I'd be able to afford a full meal. Liked the atmosphere and the staff was friendly.
Wendy Shaw
We popped in for some mulled wine in the evening and it was delicious. We also had some deserts which were ok.

My favourite place to eat and drink! So reliable on service and quality/creativity of food. Never had a bad meal here and we go a lot! So great to have a bar/restaurant that is doing something different in Howick, we will always recommend it. Well worth the dollars for consistently great experiences! Now to convince you to cater my wedding Luke

The pick of the bars in East Auckland. Great food, good selection of craft beers and most importantly, fantastic bar staff, particularly Molly who looks after us every Friday. Highly recommend to all.

Came for a few jugs on a Friday night. Service was awesome, this young guy with a beard was a star behind the bar. His name was Ethan I thinks 10/10 recommend

Visiting from the UK. Brilliant atmosphere and super delicious food. The owner, Luke and his staff were very welcoming and friendly. A visit is a must.

Most amazing food you can have at a bar! Hard to find any restaurant with better. The Oktoberfest beer they have is really good. Great service. Best place around to eat and have a drink!
Dave Hey
Love this bar! Definitely our favourite local- super friendly staff, the food is fantastic & the atmosphere is chilled & comfortable; whether you just want s solo beer or wine or catch up with friends! The live music on Sunday was awesome, again with a relaxed and chilled vibe! Highly recommend!
Jae Chad
Awesome place! Great food, friendly service and vibes. Would definitely recommend and visit again. 😊😊
Rod Giles
Great atmosphere , staff and music with a tapas menu that is constantly changing

Always great here. Luke (and Luke) give fantastic service and the menu is full of flavour - the specials board always have some wonderful treats to explore. The truffle fries, sirracha chicken and salt n pepper squid are our go-tos and for good reason. Top notch, hence why we're here at least once a week
Gary Caswell
Absolutely amazing....the best meal I have had in a long time. Fantastic variety, and the combinations of flavours were just divine. Staff were wonderful. Next time we're in NZ, we'll be back!

I would have given it a 5 but the Bratwurst was advertised as having horseradish aioli and came out with that and ketchup (or tomato sauce depending on where you're from). I detest ketchup and when I complained nothing was offered to try and fix the problem or make the customer happy. I won't come back. Too bad as it would have been easy to turn me from a disgruntled customer to a happy one. Just a simple acknowledgement from management and perhaps an offer to do something, anything. But no, too bad. 😤😠😡👎👎👎

Had a fabulous dinner at The Corner in Howick as usual.the spicy Mac and cheese was absolutely fantastic.Never had anything but great food and even better service every time we go there
Christine Daniel
On a busy Saturday night the wait staff and manager couldn't have been more attentive and friendly. We ate from the specials list and all the flavours were amazing. Will be dreaming about the steam buns, polenta chips & scallops until i return. Good times x

Best bar in howick and probably Auckland if you want the best food and selection of drinks then come here. Been here about 7 times and never been disappointed.

On a visit from England to my twin ate here- great food, service and atmosphere
GNUEL
ordered few things to share and tasted great. just the meat inside the Bao bun was too dried. keen to try out other food next time.

Loved the food here!!! Fantastic specials too! The red wine I had from Rioja (if you normally drink pinot) was bloody delicious.<br/>We had the cauliflower, polenta chips, Bao, fish slider and chicken tulips. All were amazingly tasty, hot, fresh and with plenty of sauce. Awesome bar in Howick, can’t wait to come back

Have been going here for couple of years and have never had a bad meal. Fab friendly service as well. Love how they change part of their menu every couple of weeks or so.

A gem in Howick, we had scallops, the squid, and the chicken baos. All super delicious but just wish the serving sizes were bigger for the price you pay. But on Monday nights they do have a dinner deal (more info on their website)<br/><br/>The girl serving us was so kind and friendly, introduced us to how The Corner serves shared plates and explained what they had.
David Richardson
Consistently outstanding service, food, atmosphere & beverages.<br/>The team here always smiling and prompt.<br/>Sundays live music was a hit with my partner and I we enjoyed the tapas.<br/>Garlic bread here to die for!<br/>Recommend to all!
#fatlyfe
The staff were super friendly. It was extremely busy but that didn’t put a damper on our wait times. We ordered a variety of tapas to share as there were 6 of us. All came out one better that the other. The goats cheese croquettes were my favourite and the bbq flavoured chicken was my least I think I would have preferred the Siraccha

Went to The Corner tonight as part of a work function and really enjoyed the experience as did my colleagues. Great food, good service and nice atmosphere. Great spot in Howick.
Alexandra Burridge
Had lunch with my gf here today, I must say the food was amazing! Service was stellar and I’ll 100% come back, the poutine is an absolute must!!

Oh my what a delightful place, 1st as we walked in we were greeted by lovely and friendly staff. We were given time to study the menu and specials board. Our purpose of the lunch trip was to order a lot of tapas/share foods. Best snacks ever.... a lamb slider I ordered Devine... suttle flavours tasty not over powering. My husband ordered the bao of the day which was Karange chicken which he thoroughly enjoyed, our friends both ordered the chicken taco and enjoyed them. We ordered to share cauliflower bites (AMAZING) Polenta Chips (DEVINE) Squid (YUM), Loaded Wedges with Pulled Pork (BEST EVER) .... We all left so full and impressed, highly recommend and staff & 2IC very good at his job.
Emma Somerfield
This place does the best bao bun ever and there cauliflower bites are amazing ! It gets better every time I go! Great atmosphere and good music !
Morgan Jacinda
Awesome local place to dine and drink at. Staff are efficient & friendly and the food was great and was delivered fast. Love it will go back!
Gaetano
This place is getting better and better.<br/>Haven’t been there for about 3 months and I must say the food and the service is always perfect.<br/>Recommended to anyone who can discern good and taste food, rather then the rubbish food you get served in other places in Howick.
Yoda
Love to visit this place with my friends . Foods are fusion and taste great. But this place is always busy and very noisy. My voice is always funny the day after I visit the corner because I had to talk really loud to someone next to me. Other than that, this is a great place to visit and enjoy your weekend.
Janice McCartain Dagg
My partner and I came here on a lunch date with a coupon we got off one of those coupon websites (I can't remember which one) We are not from the Howick area and our google instructions were incorrect so it took awhile to find this place. Parking is parallel street parking.<br/><br/>Interior decor was updated, we had prompt service. We choose the Pork Sliders and Loaded Wedges. Though the sliders were alright, what was really memorable for us was the Loaded Wedges. They were actually loaded and piping hot with a decent serve of sour cream. <br/><br/>I know we have not been back here since but  I definitely recommend the place if you are a local and are looking for some hearty cusine.

This place is always busy, and you’ll realise why once you’ve visited.<br/>The Corner bar is cute & cosy, with a select food & beverages menu. The staff are really friendly, the vibes are chill & the live entertainment is also really good. <br/>They have a black board menu which changes regularly, as well as clipboards which seem to be a more permanent menu. <br/>The food is tapas style and on the more expensive side, but they absolutely nail it every time. The food is perfection, & consistently so each time we visit. We always get the chicken bites, polenta chips, cauliflower bites & the best - the chicken karaage steamed buns. <br/>I do not mind paying the higher price point to enjoy this little Howick gem. It’s definitely one to visit if you’re in the area!
Simon Wordsworth
Polenta fries with truffle mayo - crisp beautiful flavours. Scallops on a bed of carrot miso purée with ginger and I’m not sure what but it made my day. And hot spicy sriracha chicken thighs with blue cheese sauce. Executed to very high level and service is awesome!! Highly recommend with a pint of NZ Pale Ale

The Corner is a smaller establishment that seems most well suited for late afternoon or evening drinks and a bite to eat, as the style of tapas, service and layout seemed to be more geared toward this. For what we were looking for on the day, the food was a little lacking in finesse, though it was still certainly of good standard, their seafood seemed fresh and the menu was fairly interesting. <br/><br/>While I visited with family, I could easily see myself coming back with a friend for some drinks. I have a feeling that my opinion might improve on second visit.

Such a great time especially when they have a live band! Chill atmosphere and amazing food! Been twice now and I have to admit I love how the specials menu changes but I do have my favorites and can't alway get em, e.g. Steamed chicken bun, and the goat cheese balls!!! SOOO GOOD!!
Mun Clair
Such a lovely place to grab a bite to eat! It's quite small and cozy so I wouldn't recommend going at a busy time like Saturday night (unless you don't mind the rush!). What's unique about the Corner is that the menu is ever changing. They have a set menu which has all the basics like chips, wedges etc. But, they have 2 black boards which detail the currnent specials. We tried a variety of food as this restaurant is tapas style. We tried the shrimp taco, chicken karaage steam bun, spicy chicken bites, wedges and warm Nutella brownie. Every single dish was impeccable! I would love love love to go again to try other specials! Highly recommend

Great little spot and good looking menu boards. I found the portion sizes a little small for one considering how pricey it is. So we settled for a dessert platter. Mind you, if your with a pregnant woman, you might as well order one just for herself lol. The staff are nice, although I saw a lot of them eating at the bar while we were eating our own. I have worked quite a bit in hospitality and I know all too well that eating on the job in front of customers isn't a good look. Apart from that, it was a nice experience.

The Corner is by far my favorite place to eat in Auckland and I go there often with my partner - the only time I've not had a stellar experience was on a Friday night as the place can get very loud and crowded (popular place!) so if you're only there for the food, 'off peak' is nicer. Food is always high quality with great presentation and the menu changes regularly so there's always something different when you come. Food is generally little tapas sharing plates so it's good to try a few things they have on offer. Staff are always friendly and humorous! Highlight dishes for me recently were the salmon sashimi with coconut yoghurt, chicken tenders with tequila and lime and you can never go wrong with their gourmet fries.
Sharon The Foodie
Came here for lunch and I am happy with the 3 for 2 deal! I had the teriyaki salmon steam bun which was refreshing as it has coriander and ginger; soft shell crab was alright as the batter was soggy and thick; loved the kingfish taco; and the scallop with blue cheese puree was above average. Overall the food was 4.5/5 and the service was excellent- 5/5.
Wayne Potgieter
What a great little place. Tapas style menu that is pretty gourmet. Changes regularly. Great selection of cocktails and beers.<br/><br/>The service was fantastic. Super friendly staff and a great place to lose a few hours.<br/><br/>Will definately be back.

Decided to come here for lunch, and very satisfied with our meal!<br/><br/>Great little place in Howick for Tapa style food, made to share! We ordered the calamari, fries, sriracha chicken bites and a prawn and pork sesame toast.<br/><br/> Loved each and everyone of the dishes we ordered. Calamari was beautifully done, although must be eaten quickly or it'll get rubbery. Fries were well done, chilli jam was delicious. Sriracha chicken was goooood, chicken cooked well, grilled most likely and heavily drenched in sriracha sauce 😍 the blue cheese really worked well with the chicken! Love love love! And lastly the prawn and pork toast was really good, it's definitely savoury, I'm a lover for savoury!<br/> Menu is interesting and appetising, I'll definitely be back for more to sample more things in the menu. They do a great lunch special of three dishes for the prices of two! <br/><br/>Friendly and attentive staff, love the atmosphere of this place. Modern decor, highly recommend and will be back to sample more things on the menu!
Ruth Ireland
Had an amazing dinner here! Loved the tapas style meals - means you can try a little bit of a few things. Perhaps a bit more choice on the menu would be good, but otherwise a fantastic dining out location!
Roz
By far the best food in Howick we have had to date. The Chilli Prawns & Morrocan Lamb short ribs were delicious. Friendly and attentive service, we will be back.
Monique Porteous
Basalt was full this night, but gosh darn it I am glad! Otherwise I would have never found this place. It's a tapas bar/restaurant that's totally made for sharing - date night anyone?! The seating is limited so book ahead if possible. I love the aesthetics of the place and the staff are even better. The food is well priced for the quality but it's a little upmarket for the howick area. Everything was made with a lot of care to presentation and the quality of ingredients really shines through the dishes. There's an option for almost every diet also! Also check out the specials board when you are there - the best looking stuff is on it 😉
Paige Eriwata
Perfect place to stop in for a drink and snack before a night out, food was delicious and the staff were knowledgable and friendly. Service was quick and location is great, just a few minutes walk from Monterey Cinemas.
Rachel
The Corner has a modern design and main colours of white and black along with wooden shelves and table-tops. I liked how staff were clear in letting us know they serve small-portioned meals, so that we were aware of this. Menus are on clipboards, which is a nice idea. We ordered tacos - one of each type. I was impressed with the Cajun Shrimp taco as it was very flavourful and the Confit Duck taco had a nice spiciness to it. We also ordered Mini Pancakes which is three stacks of four tiny pancakes. Each had a bit of bacon on it too. It was tasty and the pancakes were cooked well. If you are looking for a place for a drink and small bites to eat - this is the place to go.
Louise Culley
We made great use of our grab one vouchers to try out our local eateries. We went in during a weekend early dinner tapas menu and ordered pretty much most things on the menu. Food was fabulous and we even got Mr fussy to have mussels !!. Staff and owner were very friendly and professional. Place has such a great vibe.

I'm not sure how long The Corner has been here - being almost on the roundabout it's very easy to drive straight past. We decided to try it instead of our usual - and we're glad we did!<br/>It occupies quite a small space but is set up well with high & low tables.<br/>Service was great from everyone, from our initial interaction where we were walked through the menu, to the delivery of each dish. Friendly without being OTT.<br/>There were 3 of us & we decided to go for some of the sharing platters although the brunch menu did look good. There were a number of good specials - really love it when the kitchen tries to keep things interesting with some mouthwatering options.<br/>We started off with 2 tempura battered Clevedon oysters for the oyster lovers. This was a special & quite expensive at $7 each but the presentation & make up of the dish with a bloody mary was worth it.<br/>We then ordered the teriyaki chicken tacos, caulifower bites, wagyu beef sliders (from the specials menu) & spicy chicken wings. All dishes were delivered when ready & were fresh delicious & well presented.<br/>The meat in the sliders was cooked to medium so still nice & juicy. The wings had a very spicy but very delicious sauce. They were also served with a blue cheese sauce - couldn't really taste the blue cheese but I don't think it mattered as it was perfectly balanced.<br/>For drinks we tried the Boundary Rd ale which was on tap & Cider. <br/>Really great visit & nice to have such a good experience when trying somewhere new. Will be back, & soon.

Always enjoy The Corner, the staff are really friendly and owner is especially nice and accomodating. Good menu and they always have interesting specials on the board. <br/>Would have to say though that the desserts are not that great but aside from that it is a lovely place to have a drink and tapa if visiting Howick which is great, as Howick seriously is in short supply of euro style eateries!
Travels4Food
My favourite thing was their lemon and pepper fries and corn dogs. The ox tail would have been nice to have more of the sticky braised sauce to come with it. The truffle mash was a bit gluggy and grilled courgettes needed a bit more flavour. The wedges came in a sweet chilli and bacon mix which I'm not a fan of. The pulled pork sliders was ok. I think the price is a bit pricey for a place in the suburbs and their small portion sizes.
SS
Third time at 'The Corner' tonight and once again, slightly underwhelmed. Tonight, we had the pan seared scallops w asparagus purée and bacon crumbs, the crumbed mushroom w rosemary butter, the pretzel bread w a baked garlic bulb, fries and an Oreo cheesecake dessert jar! <br/><br/>Pros: love love love the fact that there's a cool place that serves tapas in East auckland! Seriously lacking some chill eateries these ways. Service was friendly and the place is a pretty neat vibe to it. Also love the fact that they do specials weekly, makes the menu a little more interesting. Food wise, scallops were yum and everything else was slightly underwhelming. Aw man, the chilli jam that came w the fries was delicious. We both thoroughly enjoyed that. <br/><br/>Cons: I think the prices don't match the quality of food. There isn't really a wow factor to the food. The mushrooms were a complete let down, the crumb was too heavy and the actual mushroom had shrunken down and the butter didn't compliment the mushroom at all. <br/><br/><br/>

Wow what a way to spend a Monday night! Dinner for two for only $30. Choice of three tapas to share. Our choice included sliders, duck wraps and juicy pork ribs shared with a bottle of wine. The staff were warm and friendly and all other patrons seemed to be enjoying their experience also. Will definitely return soon

I want to rate The Corner higher than this because they truly do have nice food but I left feeling underwhelmed. For me, majority of the food was alright... I'm not sure if part of the reason was because I was expecting a lot as they receive high praise from the reviews I've read. <br/><br/>Clearly a very popular place because it was relatively busy on a Tuesday night! Great atmosphere and very friendly wait staff. We ordered their Cajun shrimp tacos, duck confit tacos, scallops of the day, spicy chicken bites, some bread and dips and one of their weekly specials- the roasted bone marrow. <br/><br/>The two types of tacos were alright. For me, I think they just lacked flavour. The duck confit had wakame in it which is seaweed but it tasted like those packet seaweed salad ones that you buy cheap from an Asian supermarket. Which isn't a problem but I just felt like it wasn't really worth the price. The bone marrow was okay too, nothing spectacular. The marrow had some meat topped on top of it and pesto I believe as well and although I know it's bone marrow and it usually doesn't have much flavour, I expected there to be a bit of flavour in the meat or the pesto to balance it out when dipping the bread in it. I won't write much about the bread and dips because it was just that- bread and dips (see photo) Two stand outs of the night was the spicy chicken bites and the scallops. The scallops had a delicious buttery sauce that complemented it well and the spicy chicken had a bunch of spices sliced and lathered on top of it- delicious! <br/><br/>I'm not saying The Corner is bad- although the major theme of the night was "average", there were some good dishes as well. I'm coming back to try their other food as they change it often and their desserts because they looked good- they might just change my opinion of The Corner.

coffee is taste strange. I think this cafe is just feed you when hungry. Not for the enjoyment. i wont go again. Just like fast food style.
Solarflare
I really wish I liked The Corner more than I do - the service is terrific and they're obviously trying really hard to produce interesting food. But on the two occasions I've been there for lunch the food has been so oversalted it ruined the experience. (We tried again after the first time because we were hoping it was just an unfortunate accident, but no.) Palate is an individual thing and if you like a lot of salt you'd probably be delighted with the place, but if not I couldn't recommend them. We did like the truffle fries which we had both times, although on the first occasion we couldn't taste any truffle oil at all.

My wife & I love The Corner at old Howick Picton Street, close to Basalt where I used to go very often. The seats were comfortable and the wait staff was friendly. Specials were written on the mirror which one can see easily. <br/><br/>We had beef cheek steamed-bun sliders, scallops with chorizo & peas, maple pork ribs & fries for this early Saturday dinner. Everything was lovely - almost. The sliders were on the weak side. The flavour of the beef cheek was overwhelmed by the strong "BBQ sauce." <br/><br/>We missed the specials it used to have - roasted bone marrow, crocodile carpaccio with deep-fried capers, chicken skin crackling, braised rabbit leg croquettes, crumbed lambs brains, etc.  (Food - 4/5; Service - 4.5/5; Ambience - 3/5)

This place has become a regular visit. I am constantly impressed with the food quality, variety and offering things i haven't tried to cook myself (yet). Great service, great food knowledge, everything but the squeal approach stands them in good stead for repeat visits. I drive across town (from city) to see what is on the mirror this week. Long may they last. Fantastic, try them. I will continue to return.

We came here on Monday night while up visiting from Wellington. We were hugely impressed with the service from Luke & the team and blown away by the food. We had a broad range of dishes and each one of them was delicious and well thought out. We will certainly be back and recommend it highly.
Andrew Warner
Great birthday lunch!! Had the 3for2 shared plates deal - awesome food, great flavours and beautifully cooked. The quirky presentation adds to the overall experience. The mulled wine was exceptional and a real plus point. Will be back again & again.

We here on new year's eve to grab a bit before heading off to friend's place for new year celebrations the place was packed..<br/>The guy who served us had a good idea of all the dishes on the menu and suggested us some pretty good dishes..
Nigel Sparrow
Had the team here for dinner last night and was really impressed with the variety and quality of the food.  Clearly a lot of thought had gone into the flavour combinations and the cooking methodology.  Considering the range of slow cooked options and the prep, the pricing was pretty good as well.  We all ordered a few dishes and they came out all together so we could share and enjoy ourselves.  How Tapas is meant to be - casual, fun and great tasting food.  And of course the grape juice complemented with attentive service made it all the better<br/><br/>Thanks guy, see you again and looking forward to the next menu iteration.
Flowergirl69
Enjoyable lunch today at The Corner. Love how the dishes are designed to share as we wanted to try all the specials of the day. The specials change daily and are based on fresh, seasonal produce. We tried Ham hock trotter and belly terrine, with toffee apple puree, grain mustard, pickled apple and pearl onions .  Lamb shank croquettes, with fondant carrots, parsnip puree and minted pea puree. Moroccan lamb sliders with whipped feta tzatziki. Delicious. Coffee was good and the service great.  Will have to return.

A great little place to eat.  Good menu, with plenty of choice.  Great service, good food and a reasonable price.Could not ask for any more.Derek

These guys know how to cook. Their food is fantastic and they always mix it up with new exciting dishes. Great atmosphere, fantastic service, exceptional quality food for a great price, what's not to like for a casual drop in local joint!

A hidden gem in Howick Village!<br/> All plates we had here were delicious. Highly recommend the prawn tacos!! We were 5 people and ordered 8 tapas and a dessert each which was plenty enough and came to $35 each. Service was friendly, helpful and not overboard. The Corner was nice and warm on a chilly Wednesday night. <br/><br/>Highly recommend!

It was pretty quiet the night we came and so the vibe wasn't very warm, but I'm sure it's different on more crowded nights. The first thing I noticed was the big mirror where the bulk of their seemingly regularly changed menu is displayed. There's not much on the fixed menu, and I love how the place would keep changing and keep things fresh. My favourite was the Asian ribs, which fell off the bone and had a sweet Asian BBQ flavour that coupled well with thinly sliced kumara chips. The seared scallops where small but well seasoned and the butternut puree was a nice subtly sweet complement. I really enjoyed the chocolate mousse, which wasn't too rich, and was nice and light with a touch of mint flavour. The sliders seem to be a popular dish here but personally I didn't really like them, they had nice spices but I think lacked in some other textures (e.g. some fresh spinach) or a sauce just to bring it together and make it less dry. The 2 dishes for 30 bucks deal is also pretty value. The place is located a few shops down from Basalt, though it is quite easy to miss given its small size.

Recently came here yesterday (Monday) for lunch. At first glance, the place was quite dark everywhere except for the bar area. We were greeted by the friendly front staff. <br/><br/>We decided to order the gourmet fries, salt and pepper squid, prawn tacos & pulled pork sliders, with small plates being 3 for 2.<br/>Food came out very quickly, with everything being cooked well. The only let down was the aioli which was in every dish except for the sliders. The flavour didn't go well with the dishes, tasting like truffle oil that wasn't pleasant. <br/><br/>If it weren't for the aioli, we would have loved the meal.
Marcella
Love coming here as the menus are always changing and exciting. <br/>The phrase "you eat with your eyes" definitely applies here. All the food are always presented beautifully that you're just salivating before even tasting the food. Unfortunately I thought last nights' food were a bit of a let down for me. We ordered the seared scallop and the venison with plum sauce. Although they were presented nicely, the dishes themselves lacked flavour. <br/><br/>I've been here a few times now and this was the first time I left feeling disappointed. Other times however has always been yummy. So far the kangaroo tataki was my fave. Can I just say that the gourmet fries are a must try?!? They're so amazingly delicious! Luckily it's one of the permanent dishes on the menu.<br/><br/>A fun place to get together and share little plates of food. Wouldn't really come here for a romantic date night as it gets pretty crowded and loud. Service is always spot on too :)<br/><br/>P.S sorry for the bad lighting in my photos. They don't do justice on how beautifully they were presented.

I love this cafe. It located just in the Howick historical village. The Corner had special buy two pay one weekday lunch promotion when we first visited it. We ordered a scallop, pull pork sliders and squids. The food served were delicious and nicely decorated on a wooden chopping boards. The coffee was also very good. Not to miss cafe if you happen to be in Howick.

We arrived before 6 pm on a Monday night & had a lovely & efficient but un-rushed meal.  The manager was friendly, helpful  & attentive, introducing us to their regular menu & extensive specials board.  We chose 3 items from among the specials & the food was beautiful & delicious. The garlic bread also deserves special mention as was wonderful - a slightly sweet dough & crunchy on the outside. We didn't have room for dessert.  The decor is comfortable & informal but the acoustics are very bright so it's hard to have a quiet conversation during happy hour.  Although out-of-the-way for us, we'll definitely be back.

I can probably say that the Corner is my fav place to eat at out here in the Eastern suburbs of Auckland. Similar to places like Depot, this place is known for their tapas which are changed daily. I had come here for lunch with a friend using a Grabone voucher and I was extremely pleased with each dish we had ordered! I can't recall what the fish and meat dish was called but both of these were scrumptious! Each bite was such a delight! However, I really have to make a special mention for the prawn tacos ! I highly highly HIGHLY reccomend this dish if you do ever visit the Corner and thankfully, it's one of their permanent dishes on their menu :P This was the dish of the day for me<br/>The bill came up to a total of around 50 dollars which I thought was reasonable for such a yum experience.<br/>p.s. service was 5/5 too as the waitress was extremely patient with us and explained each special they had on the day. Hopefully I'll be returning soon to taste more of their menu :)<br/><br/>UPDATE!!: 6/8/2015Went here again on another Grabone Voucher as I knew I couldnt pass up another chance to have more amazing tapas. This time around, we had ordered two of the specials, the Asahi baked Salmon and the Beef short rib cooked porter style; and of course two tacos ( one chicken and one cajun shrimp). Out of the two tacos, the cajun shrimp one was still declared the winner and remains my favourite thing to order whenever I visit. The Salmon was a close second as every mouthfull was filled with the sweetness of the salmon and a hint of Asahi, delicious!! The short rib was pretty nice but would unlikely get it agian :) $14 is quite pricey for one short rib haha. Chicken taco wasnt too bad but with the option of the cajun prawn taco, why would you not go for the best.<br/>Once again I'm extremely impressed with The Corner, and service was 10/10 !!

Absolutely love the food here. Came here for Mother's Day brunch. Decided to go with their tapas. Service was great. We had the roasted cauliflower, breads and dips, pulled pork sliders and the crab omelette (special of the day). Everything was so tasty. Especially loved the crab omelette. The only negative comment I'll make is that the cider I had (somersby apple cider- on tap) was a tad expensive at $10.50 for a glass. <br/>I'll definitely be back here again for the food.

Had some shared plates for a lunch deal, great value for some nibbles. Squid was delicious but the taco was pretty average. The waitress asked how the food was and I told her. She became a little defensive. (probably best to not ask how it was if you don't want to hear the answer). This is a little understandable, as I did come over a bit harsh.

My girlfriend and I travelled out to Howick from Newmarket to check out this restaurant. I was a little wary at first as its a bit to travel for a casual night out but lets just say I was pleasantly surprised! After arriving we were quickly seated and offered drinks and explained how the tasting plates work. This was not our first rodeo but it was nice to be taken through the menu by the staff member and told which have been popular and what was a must-try. They all sounded delicious and we struggled to pick so ended up with 5 dishes which was definitely more than enough for us. Must try dishes were definitely the homemade garlic bread which was incredible and the cheese balls. The ambience is really lovely and not being a big restaurant it feels quite cosy yet upbeat with the Edison bulbs and decor. Would definitely recommend trying and would easily be our local if we lived closer. We'll be back again for sure!!

Just simply yum!  We've been here 3-4 times now and every time has been fabulous.  The talented chef brings the absolute best ouf of the their fresh, seasonal produce.  Over the weekend we enjoyed cold smoked marlin and honey baked figs - both were stand out dishes.  The staff are attentive and entertaining.  The Corner is a great local spot to enjoy a couple of wines and some top-quality, really interesting small plates.

After reading a few reviews, I've decided to have a good night out at The Corners with my mates to kick start my weekend.<br/><br/>We're quite lucky to grab a table just after 7pm on a Friday night, the space quickly filled up within 15mins after securing our seats. No reservation unless you're with a big group, so I recommend you to arrive 10-15mins in advance.<br/><br/>We were welcomed by a friendly & humourous manager, introduced us to their base menu and special menu that changes daily. Food serving proportion is between appetizer/tapas. It's ideal to order to share amongst the group. <br/><br/>We've ordered mainly special menu listed on their wall-hung mirror between the four of us.<br/><br/>- beer battered beef & blue cheese sliders + an additional one for extra $5 (originally comes with 3).<br/>- seared scallops with truffle oil mushroom paste.<br/>- kangaroo tataki.<br/>- pork Cutler with fried capers and red capsicum sauce.<br/>- basket of gourmet fries from the based menu.<br/><br/>My favorite is the kangaroo tataki. It's slightly overcooked to consider tataki but the flavour combo made up for it. It was very well seasoned and I would go back for more...if the menu hasn't changed already.<br/><br/>Second place would be the seared scallops. The scallops are little small but once again the truffle oil and mushroom puree paste worked so well together, we've even dipped our gourmet fries into the sauce.<br/><br/>In third place, gotta be the beef sliders. The buns was fresh and love the aroma. If you enjoy stronger savoury flavours, beef + blue cheese will satisfy your taste buds!<br/><br/>We did plan to have desserts but ironically they only had ingredients none of us like...So maybe we'll try our luck again next time. <br/><br/>Throughout the stay, the manager engaged with each table to ensure his guests are all happy. The rest of the staff seem to be enjoying what they do too! Great atmosphere, indeed very Ponsonby like.<br/><br/>Good old Howick is growing a very smart casual vibe, well done!

We visited on a busy Saturday night with a grabone voucher. Their interior is quite trendy, a great place for couple of drinks.<br/><br/>They offer tapa style food rather than normal size meal, so it's more like a bar. We ordered pulled pork sliders, mussels of the day and gourmet fries. In my opinion nothing really stands out. However the portions are relatively small so make sure you order enough dishes.<br/><br/>I do agree with the previous reviews about the specials menu on the mirror is quite diffcult to reach for everyone, better print it out.<br/><br/>Their service is great, flawless. We really enjoyed the atmosphere there. We would like come back for a few drinks. It's definitely not a place for big eaters.

With areas like Ponsonby and CBD dominating the trendy eatery locations, Howick has become such an understated location. The Corner is one of those hidden gems that left me baffled at how unbeknownst it was to the masses. The presentation is stunning, and the food is a delight.<br/><br/>We visited with a GrabOne voucher which I snapped up immediately as I had been eyeing up The Corner for a while now. The restaurant was competely devoid of patrons while we were there, but that’s fine with me- our fare arrived with lightning speed to our table and we were well looked after by the lovely staff. I do agree with the gripe on previous reviews about reading the specials off the mirror on the wall, it was difficult and confusing to decipher. Perhaps printing out an extra page for the specials to feature in the menu would be easier, or write it on a blackboard that is easily accessible for everyone?<br/><br/>We ordered 5 dishes, and the four of us were completely stuffed afterward. Would highly recommend the Lamb rack with couscous!! The shrimp tacos, salt and pepper squid, and scallops were happily devoured, but the gourmet chips lacked the promised parmesan and truffle unfortunately. Would definitely recommend this place to friends :)

I recently ventured out to The Corner in Howick for lunch. What a great spot for something to eat. Its a very chic with modern interior however just lacked a brighter natural light. <br/><br/>Again another eatery offering tapas style meals, but also with a huge selection of specials on offer. We were told to try the garlic pretzel bread, and I would recommend this loaf to anyone whose a fan of garlic bread! So warm and soft and served with half a roasted garlic too. The Corner is not a place where you are trying to watch your weight. Also sharing gourmet chippies, cajun shrimp tacos and sashimi special. The gourmet chips were a tad disappointing, purely because I am a fan of the thick cut chips and when a menu item says 'gourmet' I dunno but I expect big handout chips. The sashimi was a great option to balance out the heaviness of the other dishes we ordered and flavour was good. The prawn tacos didn't shout amazing but at least they were cooked perfectly. <br/><br/>I think The Corner is a great place for some greasy bites and a good ole beer. The service is great. Food was efficient and the girl was very informative with all questions. The only suggestion I would make is to remove the specials off the mirror, because if you're sitting at a table, you can't see them unless you stand up and walkover to read them. Its just a tad awkward. <br/><br/>Rating<br/>Food: 7.5/10<br/>Service: 9/10<br/>Value for Money: Very Good<br/><br/>143 Picton Street, Howick<br/>Opening Hours: <br/>Mon-Fri 12pm-Late<br/>Sat-Sun 10am-Late

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. If this place was just around the 'Corner' from us, I would be there every week! Looking forward to the North Shore branch.

First time to try this recent and welcome addition to Howick's dining experience. The restaurant is quite small but we were lucky to secure the last table for two on a busy Saturday evening. The place has a good vibe, with a snazzy interior, which suits the lovley old building . The food was delicious and reasonably priced and as we are not huge eaters, it was nice to share and taste several different dishes. We loved the service. The staff were all very friendly, attentive and knowledgable about their wares. We shared the salt and pepper squid, bread and dips, mussels of the day, and spinach and artichoke dip. All beautifully and eclectically presented. Our new favourite local restaurant ,and we will be back, to try some more of the menu!

We love going to the corner for a nice glass of wine and delicious food to share. Friendly passionate staff and always get to try something new.
Amy @ My Dining Journey
Finding a good local place to eat around the Howick area can be troublesome as the good eateries either don’t open for dinner or the ones that do are mediocre. This was until I came across The Corner when I was browsing on Zomato. On Picton Street, just a couple of shops around Basalt, The Corner is open from lunch till late between Monday to Friday, as well as open from brunch till late on the weekends.<br/><br/>My friends and I decided to meet up for dinner on a lazy Saturday night and we managed to get the second to last table in the small dining area. With limited space, the vibe is more gastropub with the bar occupying a big section of the eatery. The concept of the menu is made for sharing and we ordered four dishes to share between three.<br/><br/>The gourmet fries with truffle parmesan salt, aioli and chilli jam is neatly served in a small wire basket and these were served hot and crispy. The chilli jam has just a hint of spice and is quite different from the traditional tomato sauce. The scallop of the day was served with crispy prosciutto, corn and diced tomato. Fat succulent scallops, perfectly cooked!<br/><br/>We enjoyed the pulled pork sliders with red cabbage and apple slaw, served between warm toasted buns. The Cajun shrimp taco was my favourite for the evening. With ample shrimp in each taco, this was an excellent value compared to some taco joints which shall remain anonymous! The combination of Cajun shrimp, pickled red onion, tomato, corn and basil salsa was spot on and the final dressing of aioli sealed the deal!<br/><br/>We left some room for dessert and opted for a small blueberry cheesecake and a large honey roasted nectarines with a mango and coconut mascarpone.<br/><br/>My friends and I really loved th vibe at The Corner. With friendly service, excellent food and plenty of off-street parking, I can see myself being a regular here!

Best place around in Howick. Food is of the highest quality and menu is constantly changing/evolving. I go here nearly every week, sometimes even twice and the staff/hosts are always friendly. Pricing is not too bad and it is best to share as it is way cheaper. Great beer on tap and a good selection of wine/spirits. If you're into trying new things The Corner is for you!<br/><br/>I'd just like to add that there is only one bad review I read and it is not true. The corner is unique and they have not copied any other bar/restaurant. The food is 100% authentic and it changes every single day. I have not seen that anywhere else around the area. I think someone is a bit jealous of their success.

This little restaurant/bar is a great spot to call into for lunch, dinner or just for drinks. almost didn't want to rate it so high - coz don't want it to get too busy :) - being selfish, want to keep it all for ourselves! Awesome food - great staff, why wouldn't you?

Love The Corner, love the atmosphere, love the food, love the location!! Amazing service and the food is delicious! Definitely coming back for the Oreo cheesecake and the stunning Sliders. They have a fantastic changing menu to suit the season, never disappointed with the new food I try. Oh and they do an AMAZING Salt and Pepper Squid!! Cant go wrong if you want a casual bevy or a nice candle lit dinner. The Corner is the place to go!

One of our very favourite restaurants. Fantastic food, great service, good music, and an ever changing menu with seasonal dishes . Try The Corner and you will not be disappointed.  The very best food on Howick and the surrounding  area. Now you do not have to drive into the CBD to get  a delicious meal.   We look forward to champagne Sunday brunch.

Came for the amazing food, stayed for the Asahi  & Boundary Road on tap.

Great food. Lively atmosphere. Friendly and well trained staff.. The owners have definitely found the right formula for a successful venue. <br/>I only get to Auckland once and a while to visit family but every time I'm there I know exactly where I am going to go. I will happily recommend this bar to anyone looking to enjoy a night out.<br/>Well played Corner Bar. I look forward to seeing you soon for a cider or a spiced rum or two.

The worst part about The Corner is seeing what delicious food they post on facebook, and not being able to go and eat it then and there! The food is amazing, atmosphere is friendly and the staff are great. Highly recommend anything on their menu.
Alex Kuiumdjian
Great atmosphere and the food is always tasty! One of the best things i like about this place is that the menu is always changing so you never get bored. Best meet up spot in Howick!

Had a great night here a few weeks ago. Food is top notch, small tapas style sharing plates means everyone got to try a little of everything! Atmosphere/service/wine also very good....one of our favorite places in Howick.

Had a great night at The Corner Bar last Saturday with my wife. Delicious, well presented food, friendly service, &amp; nice decor. <br/><br/>This is the place to go in Howick if you want a special night with your partner or quiet drinks with mates.<br/><br/>We loved the soul/R&amp;B music as well!

We have been to the corner 3 times now and have not been disappointed, in fact, we are heading there again tonight!<br/><br/>Service is top notch and the food is fantastic. <br/><br/>The first time we went for dinner, we ordered the chefs seafood slate and gourmet fries... well it was to die for, just delicious and plenty for two people, also included 4 bloody mary shots!<br/><br/>The second time we just went for a couple of drinks while our Son was having soccer training at the domain, again great service and place to relax.<br/><br/>Our son pleaded with us to take him as he had missed out in the past. It was a Friday night and the place was packed, we sat at the bar and had a drink while we waited for a table, the waitress kept us updated on the status of our table which was great. Both the owner and his brother engaged in conversations with us which was great, they have a great talking point sitting on the bar... an extremely large Vodka bottle of which they were happy to tell their story. We were shown to our table and again, the food was to die for. I had the lobster ravioli, my Husband had sticky Asian scallops and our Son had the salt &amp; pepper squid - all delicious. We then decided to get desert... again YUM YUM YUM! <br/><br/>The other restaurants in Howick had better watch out cause there's a new kid on the block and it's wowing people.<br/><br/>Can't wait to see what they have in store for us tonight!
