Review Daisy Chang - Howick

Vanessa Baxter
A fabulous spot with friendly service. All wines by glass or bottle. Food is fresh, lively, bold and delicious. It’s quite honestly hard to choose from the well balanced menu and all the descriptions are enough to have you salivating. Can’t rate the salmon and the beef brisket more highly - unique and utterly delicious

Not many restaurants do what Daisy Chang did to me...let me wonder when I could go back there to try more and more delicious dishes. Beautiful - and not pricey - food, friendly and cool staff and cozy atmosphere. The main noodles dishes are really good. Super super recommend!

the place is quaint and has a distinct atmosphere. like an old chinese restaurant. it smelled of tobacco and fresh compost (i know, weird combination). that aside, the food is awesome. like super yum!

We went for a Mothers day lunch. Food was delicious, generous/good portions and decently affordable. Service was amazing! No doubt we will return again ❤

Went with my lovely friends for lunch on Saturday and the food was delicious 😋😋😋! Will definitely be going back!

We love having Daisy’s on our doorstep, the belly pork is to die for, beautifully crafted cocktails, and fantastic service!! Thanks for another great night!

It was my first dining experience here. Came with work colleagues. The food was amazing, and I loved the atmosphere too. I'll definitely come back here with my family. The hardest decision was to choose my meal. Everyone's food looked mouth watering.

First time dining here and enjoyed our food. Was quite busy on the Tues night we went. Menu was interesting that we wanted to try everything! Our 3 fav dishes were the Wok Charred Broccoli (cooked but still crunchy), Smashed 8hr Braised Beef (so tender with just the right amount of chilli) and the flavoursome Fish Curry (tasty sauce). The Malaysian Squid Tentacles were just a tad on the salty side and the Crispy Eggplant was unfortunately underwhelming. Keen to try other dishes next time. Drinks menu was good as well as the list of cocktails. They could've been short staffed on the night but the service was friendly and food came out quickly.

Honestly the greatest food in Howick! Such fantastic flavours and variety, perfect for sharing so you get a taste of many dishes. You HAVE to book. It's a small restaurant so it books out quickly. Service was perfect too. The decor is quant and unique. We've already told all our friends and will be going again soon!

This restaurant... what is not good about it!? From the staff to the menu this was lovely but the food was truly superb. The very best Drunken Noodles we have ever had. Thanks Daisy Chang for a very enjoyable experience all round.

Very underrated place in Auckland! This place needs more fame and noise, this food deserves it all. I know Bong's cooking back from when he was in Kingsland. Everything is really a one of a kind experience. Tried the chicken, pork belly, salmon, paw paw salad. Everything was fresh and full of flavour. Just the paw paw salad was more carrots and was missing some freshness for the price ($20). Cocktails are also great and well priced!

Food was amazing! Went there last night (new years eve) the place was packed and yet the service was fantastic. Food came out quickly and dishes were delicious. Raw market fish was our favourite. Our server Abigail deserve a special mention as well for her attentive and friendly service. Didn’t rate the experience 5 star because the table was wobbly and the seats weren’t comfortable. Regardless we will be back.

Love the Prawn toast and Wok Charred Broccoli most but seriously theres nothing on their menu that isn't good! The variety of food is fresh and tasty and I love that their menu is totally different from anywhere else in the area. The staff are friendly and helpful, they get busy on a weekend so make sure you book as you don't want to miss out on this little gem!

Never disappoints. Delicious meals with generous portion sizes. Welcoming staff and excellent service. Love everything on the menu so it is always hard to decide what to order!

Food was delicious and absolutely no complaints. The young waitress was lovely and helpful. Highly recommend dining at Daisy Chang.

Super yummy fusion food - dine in and dine out options. Love the pork belly bites, dumplings and Singapore Noodles. Generous portions and staff who are happy to go the extra mile for their guests

It took us a while to find the place since there weren't any obvious signs, only one that I could find being the non-lit sign on the roof cover by the road. We didn't have a booking and it was full when we arrived so we ended up waiting at the bar next door. The place had booths on one side and a couple of large tables on the other so we ended up sharing with other people. We grabbed a few things to share and it was mostly nice. The crispy squid tentacles were ok. Just think they were lacking a bit of flavour without the sriracha mayo. The roti was nice and crispy. But I really liked the grilled chicken with that coconut flavour. The smoked pork shoulder noodle soup wasn't good. The soup itself tasted like water and soy, couldn't get any (if there was any) pork broth flavour. The pork looked like it was roasted and then put on top of the soup so there were some bits which were really dry, even in the soup. It ended well with the ice cream slider. Nice fried bread with ice cream, nuts, and caramel. The menu might be a bit of a hit and miss but it was mostly good. I did find it weird they didn't have rice on the menu.

went there long time ago but kept forgetting to give a review. it was a pretty long wait( half an hour)for dinner time as they were fully seated. was highly expected for a big selection of food but menu is pretty limited. the pork Bao was too oily as it was deep fried. their services was great tho, keen for another try sometimes still.

Ordered a selection of dishes to keep everyone happy....and they were. Love the duck hawker roll, the pork belly bites and the Singapore noodles but everything was great and hit the spot. Really easy to order online and pick-up was a breeze. Thanks so much!

Enjoyed the Duck Hawker Roll out of the other 2 dishes ordered. This chicken dumplings and the Bao Buns were average needed more flavour and sauce. Bit pricey.

Good flavours and nicely presented. Had the dumpling, it was tasty and creative, a bit different to the Chinese ones. Overall, nice place for fusion food. 🍜

We really wanted to love this place. East Auckland needs some cute new Asian-fusion joints, but our visit did not live up to our expectations. We ordered one each of the three dumplings, roast duck roti, crispy chicken and slow cooked beef cheek.

CONS: The dumplings were not enjoyable at all. All three dumpling pastries were too thick and gluggy, and most definitely underdone/ undercooked. The filling for the pork dumpling tasted like generic supermarket dumpling filling. Their monthly specials menu was not given to us nor explained by the wait staff. Only realised there were more options when the couple next to us ordered pork belly bites.. which definitely were not on the main menu. Also had to ask for water half way through the meal.

PROS: Dishes came out relatively quickly and were presented beautifully. The crispy chicken was delicious and moist and the sauce that accompanied the chicken... mmmmnm. Fave dish was the beef cheek w som tum/ papaya salad. Generous portion of beef and delicious tamarind sauce with a decent kick.

Overall - 5/10

Had lunch here today. We had the pork belly bites, crunchy chicken, crispy squid and Singaporean noodles. Everything was extremely delicious. Will definitely be back again. Love their decor and staff were friendly. Service was quick.

Service good and pleasant staff. Ordered the special of the day - the Thai red curry lamb and the beef on a thin crust. Dishes very tasty although portion size small so we ordered the fried chicken as well. Meals delivered promptly.

Came to Daisy Chang for lunch last week. Can not fault it at all. I had the Crispy Chicken bao bun and Beef Brisket noodle soup. Both were outstanding. Service was friendly and food came out fast. Great range of cocktails and craft beers as well. Will definitely be back....

Ordered all the 3 flavours for the dumplings, pork belly bao, the fried chicken, squid tentacles and the beef along with the somtum salad. The food came out really quickly which we weren’t expecting but it was all amazing. My favourite was the fresh n well balanced somtum salad!! Make sure u mention you want the vegan option if that is what your diet is!! The bao was a bit odd in terms of to big to fit in my mouth and it wasn’t steamed but maybe fried?? Not sure, I would have preferred it to fit in my mouth😳 the tentacles and chicken were nice and crispy. The beef was definitely spicy but I love spicy food. A little underwhelmed with the desert options but well aware that Asian deserts aren’t great. Would definitely recommend this place

This is the 3rd time I’ve been here. First was fantastic. 5.30pm on a week day and we were the only ones there. Last weekend I took the hubby and all was good with our vegetarian selection but the service was super slow yet only the booths had people in them. one girl was doing all the running around. Our drink arrived at the moment we finished eating and was plonked down with a ‘sorry about the delay’ and then she shot off again. Today I went and my standard vegetarian order was great and prompt. My companions pork belly bun was over cooked to the point she basically couldn’t eat it. When we paid the guy asked how the food was so we told him about the pork to which he said ‘sorry about that’. He could see most of it on the table untouched. He obviously didnt care about our dining experience and promptly told me the price. We paid the full bill and left. Don’t think we’ll be back again.

I was excited to try this place when it opened on Howick and have since bene several times. Unfortunately have found it pretty hit and miss. All the food looks good when it comes out but most dishes I have tried are underwhelming in taste. I don't rate the bao buns. The yummiest thing on the menu is the duck pancake and that is all I will order if friends decide to go here. Cute little place to sit in though. Hardly any vegetarian options so if you are vegetarian I wouldn't bother.

I've been here a few times now and the food is great. Great Beer selection, bao's and roti rolls etc are amazing. The waitstaff however are a little inexperienced. I had a bad experience the second time with my girlfriend. The menu had vegan options and also stated to mention if you have any dietary requirements but when we got there they apparently did not have the vegan dumplings anymore and could only provide a plate of kimchi and chips. If your menu says it has vegan options then you should be able to accommodate. I've been to many South East Asian fusion restaurants and they always can customise meals to suit. It was only 5pm and not busy at all and the chef was not willing to make anything else which is a bit unprofessional. I even suggested getting the wok fried broccoli which the waiter came back saying we cannot take the oyster sauce out, It's not hard to replace it with soy sauce or anything else... It's good to see they have adjusted pricing and serving sizes since I first came here. (When I first came it was $12 for 3 dumplings, now it is $10 for 4.) All in all it's a great place to eat and if they add a few more vegetarian/vegan options they will be a lot more popular :)
Food And People
Generally good but not great food. We have been two or three times and each time the food offering improved. Excellent cocktails. Lovely staff but inexperienced. We would have been more times but their booking policies seem to change every week. Currently you can reserve and they part own the bar next door which you can wait in on you haven’t reserved. Problem is... that bar is owned by the very average apothecary..which used to be great but now is not. I believe that owner has a small holding in this place and I worry for its future. If they could be organised, widen their food offering and provide seating that isn’t at the height that primary children use for school..,then it could be great. Decor is excellent.
This is NOT for me!"Hawker food in the swanky part of town" Decor is Singapore cool, wait staff keen and attentive. food I think is over priced and underwelming. Daisy may be suave, hip and polite but she don't have mama Chang's or Ah-ma's cooking skills YET!came for dinner, had the squid salad, the squid chunks were rubbery although the salad was tasty. Pulled beef and salad, again the same salad (now boring). Pulled beef had rested way too long and dried out, the beef and salad drowned in way to much fish sauce became hard to finish. Apart from the kitchen staff, I didn't spot any Asian diners, maybe because it was a Wenesday nite?

This restaurant is extravagant! The service was so great! I couldn't get enough of the food! The waiter tom was the best ever waiter ever and deserves a pay rise! I totally recommend the restaurant some of the best food i have ever had!

First up, I love the décor and the set up. I’m a sucker for good décor which adds to the whole experience and feel, and Daisy Chang have nailed it. As for the food, I think some things were done really well and what I was most impressed with was how quickly the food was served! Brownie points for that, for sure! We ordered the Prawn Dumplings, Soft Shell Crab Bao, 5 Spice Duck Hawer Rolle (pictured) and the Sweet Hawker Roll (pictured) for dessert.

The Prawn Dumplings were okay - not amazing but still good. Really plump and full of prawn filling. The Soft Shell Crab Bao looked delicious but the Bao looked a bit on the drier side. I think overall it could’ve packed some more flavour.

The 5 Spice Duck Hawker Roll was delicious. The roti was the star of the entire meal. Super flaky and buttery and just yum yum yum. I wish there was a bit less of the spring onion, though, because the oniony taste really overpowered the whole thing. I loved the duck, it was delicious and packed full of flavour, and I’d probably order it again next time as well.

The Sweet Hawker Roll was a spurr of the moment decision and I have 0 regrets. Once again the roti was flaky and absolutely to die for. The caramelised apple was warm and fell apart into a gooey delicious mess. The ice cream and caramel tied everything together well, and the combination of the warm roti, caramelised apple and the cold ice cream was perfect.

Overall, I enjoyed the meal and I think there’s some definite potential. The hawker rolls/roti would be my recommendation for anyone considering checking Daisy Chang out.

Nothing to write home about based on flavour considering the price, and how many amazing Chinese/Malaysian/Japanese etc restaurants are tucked away in Somerville and then the options on Dominion Road/greater Mt Eden. We tried the pork & chive dumplings, beef hawker roll and the chicken bao. Service was great though and our food came out incredibly fast. We were in and out of the restaurant within half an hour. The shared seating also seems to make people uncomfortable. An older couple sat across from us and a small group at the other end of the table. Both made comments about it being “odd” and “awkward”. Maybe bench seating along the wall with individual tables and singular chairs on the other side would have been better suited.

Delicious food and decent beer selection. Loved the smashed 8 hour braised beef, the wok charred brocolli and traditional house kimchi the most - they were all 5/5 out of this world. Other highlights were the shitake mushroom dumplings and Southern Thai style grilled chicken. The somtum and grilled prawn salads were also good. The beer selection was decent, but please keep extending it. My kind of place - a very welcome addition to East Auckland. Thanks!

Just loved everything- worth crossing town for! Absolute favourite was the Duck hawker roll- but can also recommend the soft shell crab bao, ribs, prawn eggplant salad and crispy chicken. So reasonable and super fresh and tasty. Oh- and they do take reservations now! So book- and go- you won't regret! ps and try the ice cream bao too!!

Ordered a crunchy chicken, thai grilled chicken and braised beef. The crunchy chicken was very nice, I would recommend it. The only let down was the braised beef. For a braised beef you would expect the meat to be moist and juicy but what we got was dissapointingly dry. Maybe we we just came on the one wrong night they braised the meat too hot for too long. The salads that come with the meals are really really good, taste fresh and goes very well with the meal. Wish they had the option to order rice though, but maybe that's just my asian genes talking.
Will up my rating to a 5 next time if beef gets improved :)

Middle of the range food, for an above average price.
It is new, so giving them the benefit of the doubt with establishing themselves, but I will wait a while before returning.
The decor, food and staff feels a little ‘incomplete’; but as you would expect from a new place trying to feel out the environment.
I think it’s higher prices are probably relevant to the area, but may be a bit steep for the range of food, and the quality.
Favourite dish was the broccoli with cashews.
Staff could have spent a little less time chatting and more time checking back on drinks etc as several times we had to ask for their help... however they did seem young so They will only learn!
Is definitely a place I will keep my eye on over the next year, and hopefully return once they have refined themselves and got into a consistent groove.

Expected a little bit more, the food was quite bland, especially the ribs, they lacked flavour and were quite dry. staff and ambience are nice. You could find more authentic, cheaper Asian food in meadowlands or dominion road

New on the scene, Daisy Chang is a refreshing and unique nook in the heart of Howick. We arrived at lunch time and had grabbed the last table - it was packed! The food was quick and fresh. Although they didn’t have any takeaway containers to take the food away and they needed to steal some next door, every bite was rich and delicious. Can’t wait to see what happens next with Daisy Chang!

New local favourite! Ordered a chicken bao and the pork dumplings and both were super tasty! The bao could have almost benefited from a little more filling as the amount of dough well outweighed the insides but was still delicious! Will definitely be visiting again!

Had really high hopes for Daisy Chang but was quite disappointed!! Found all the food quite bland with little to no flavour! Maybe it was a once off so I would be willing to try it again but last night it didn’t live up to expectations! The food was presented nicely though!
Stephy_NakiGirl
A great addition to the range of restaurants in Howick, Daisy Chang’s menu covers all the faves when it comes to Asian fusion.
The fit out has booths & sharing tables, but all is presented nicely leading through to the open kitchen.
From the menu I tried the chicken bao which was tasty (particularly the mayo!) and the dumplings which were reasonably priced with fresh prawns dipping sauce.
Can’t wait to try more from the menu

Very unique and interesting menu. Set up of the restaurant is quite open, similar to wagamamas so if you’re looking for privacy this probably isn’t the best place. Friendly staff and stunning set up 🙂
