Review Paddington Arms - Invercargill

Jonathan Chuhairy
A very cozy place with an okay staff. They have specials on several nights. I ordered a fillet mignon and it was cooked to my request which was medium well. My friend, however, who ordered a different meal (a porterhouse steak) had his overcooked. Dessert was okay, it wasn't anything spectacular. Overall though it was a pretty good experience, a nice place to have dinner with a bunch of friends.

Absolutely lovely place to have dinner. Perfect fillet mignon and lamb shank. All under $20!

The atmosphere was welcoming and the staff were friendly. We were a group of eighteen and had a private room. Our orders were taken quickly and efficiently. The meals were simple, no fuss and lovely. The service was great and our servers looked after us well. The restaurant was very busy and our meals came out quickly. They were also very well priced. Something for everyone to enjoy. Would definitely go back.

There was an issue with one of our meals and staff and manager responded to this professionally and apologetically - giving us a free desert for the trouble. The food was good value and there was no issue in changing/customizing my meal to suit my diet. Very attentive and friendly staff. We will definitely be returning.

The staff were extremely professional and nice and the steak meal was unreal. The fish of the day was over cooked and dry but okay. A nice beer and wine selection and hey we'll be back .. P/S The dining room was a little cold as well..

The set meal selection was good, with Vegetarian options. Was there for a birthday so we had a set 3 course meal menu. The young ladles running the tables were great with the pandemonium that was our group. Had to head home earlier than most however, so the courtesy coach we used a bit emptier than it probably should have been.

Not only does this place have excellent prices, the portion sizes are very good. My filet mignon was cooked PERFECTLY. Best of all, the food is tasty; there were some excellent contrasting flavours. For my money, this is one of the best places for dinner in Invercargill.

Sunday we had lunch at Paddington Arms. I was in a group of 18. Service was excellent. Meals were well presented. We had various meals off the menu and all were absolutely beautiful, from roast meals to fish meals. Veggies were in plentiful supply. Restaurant was clean and very comfortable. It was a beautiful homestead in its earlier days tho I know little about it. Perhaps I will delve into the history of these places in future before I write reports.

Not our first choice for a place to eat on a Sunday night, but very glad we stopped in. Tasty food, well presented, friendly staff and good menu selections... The roasts were very good and the lamb shank literally fell off the bone... Will be back..

The food was fantastic and did not have to wait long, waitress was friendly and had a welcoming feel. Good value for money , if your looking for a quiet country feel with good food without spending big then this is the place.

I'm giving this place four stars, because within context,
It's very well deserved. Good service from a lovely smiling
waitress. Very good food for the price, my beef was lovely
and cooked to my liking, my mushroom croquette was amazing,
and that gravy is soooo good. The starters, which were the bread
and dips and the wedges with gravy were good for only eight
dollars. My husband enjoyed his steak. We were both very full
and satisfied. For the price it's very good indeed, a nice place if you want to eat out on a budget.

Seriously, don't arrive at the Paddy expecting 4 or 5 star performance. At best, you would have to say they are inconsistent. The highlight on arriving was an attentive mature Asian lady who would benefit hugely from some training. The meals where at best average{instant mash} and showing no imagination or effort, delivered by a young girl, who wanted to be anywhere except at the Paddy, providing the worst FOH experience ever. The manger who had the personality of a dead cat, oversaw all this, and somehow I doubt if he know's what is needed to get this place through. Mature lady, a 3 for effort, the rest, a bomb.

Eight of us went for a meal last night at Paddington Arms what a lovely night we had, had a lovely friendly waitress . We had a variety of meals Fish of the day, steak, pork belly, lamb, seafood chowder, and then a variety of the desert selection. The food was delicious and we would all go back. the chef went out of his way to create a gluten dairy free desert for one of our group. The chef came out to see if we were all happy with our meals as we left and the older lady at the counter was very friendly. The restaurant was packed and many people were turned away. We felt like we had fabulous service and delicious food. Will be back.

Visited the Paddington Arms last night for my first time with my wife. Was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews on here but nothing ventured nothing gained.
Upon entering we were quickly seated by a very friendly waitress and run down on the specials and choices for meals for the evening and drink orders taken.
Drinks arrived and meals were ordered and after a bit of a delay(mixup in the kitchen that waitress apologized for) our breads and spreads starter arrived and it was very nice.
The wait for the main was quite long but fortunately the abs game on TV filled in that time and the wait was well worth it as my salmon meal was stunning. My wife got the Dixie chicken and enjoyed it especially the quiche but she had to leave part of it on her plate as it was not heated through completely.
Unfortunately we ran out of time to try the desserts so they can wait till next time.
When our plates were cleared we mentioned the cold quiche for which the waitress apologized and then as we were paying the manager also came out and apologized and took the price of the starter off the bill.
We will definitely be returning to try more of the menu even with the few we bumps we experienced as the food and the waiting service was great

Were told it was good - and we were not disappointed. Had the seafood chowder which was one of the nicest ever and the blue cod - also very good, fresh and just cooked. Must mention the salads - fantastic.
We were quite late and it was quiet, however it was cosy on a cold night and we enjoyed talking with Glenise.

Whenever I am down south I always make sure I visit the Paddington Arms. The quality of the food is always outstanding and the staff are friendly and accomodating. Our children are always made to feel welcome and the whole dining experience is enjoyable for our family.

Recently dined and had the most delicious seafood chowder. It was full of seafood and flavour. The atmosphere is warm and cosy. Service was outstanding and staff were friendly and welcoming. Everytime we dine here we are always impressed. The food is of a consistently high standard. Highly recommend this restaurant.

I make a point of dining once at Paddington Arms each time I visit Invercargill for a week on business. I'm always greeted like long lost friend. As the name implies, this is styled on a typical English pub and the meals are much as you might find in the north of England where Yorkshire pudding and gravy are so popular. I defy anyone to say they've left feeling hungry after eating at the Paddington Arms. The owner told me this week that the menu is about to change. Don't change too much - it's great as it is!.

March 2014 - Haven't been to Paddington Arms for quite some time now but was back for a birthday dinner last night. Food was very nice and rustic, prices were amazing, staff were very friendly and we had a good night out. Thanks again Paddington Arms.

Nov 2010 - Looks like Paddington Arms can be hit and miss by reading reviews below.
We went a week or so ago early on a Saturday night. We had an engagement to get to promptly and advised the staff of this, they couldn't have been more helpful. Although the place wasn't busy, we got our meals very quickly and they were both beautifully cooked and very tasty.
Whilst the meal we chose wasn't posh, it was very good (Blue Cod was devine!).
I would go back and I guess I'd touch wood I don't get the horrible waitress people talk about below.

Went there with my partner and we would both go back again. Food was good and very well priced. The cocktails were so good. We got there at 8 and were finshed at 8.30 so very quick service and very friendly.

Went for tea during the week. Quiet night in the restaurant. Polite service from the 2 waiting staff. Meals came out promptly. Food was good, but lacked flair. Maybe that's the English style? I would go back and try something else next time.

the best thing they ever did in Invercargill was getting rid of Flannaghans and its frozen seafood..but for them to just replace it with this outfit? what the hell were they thinking!!!!
i ordered the honey glazed chicken, the chicken was soooo tough and stringy i could barely cut into it and the chips that you paid extra for were what i felt were reheated in the microwave..disgusting
there was approx 16 of us there and i do not no of one of them that enjoyed their meals..everything looked and tasted so dry and to add to it so did the barman!! i mean come on is it that hard to crack a smile once in awhile, do us all a favour and go home!
i was really looking forward to dining there last night now i wish i had not paid for it at all and stayed home!!!
E for effort!!! i will not be back and will most certainly not be recommending and of my friends

total crap.

1. My 4 year old boy had to wait far to long for his roast meal, when it arrived he could only eat the mash and half of the leather they called meat as the "roast" potatoes were like wee rocks.

2. My meal read as "beef IN a Yorkshire pudding" leading me to believe it to be similar to a pie or hotpot sort of meal. was disappointed when what i got was slop on a plate with a hard bit of pastry on the side of it.

3. meat was gross. filled with fat and Grissel.

4. My girlfriends burger was a crumbled mess. our 4 year could have made a better one at home.

5. service was by the young waitress was OK. service from the older lady was horrible, and I'm guessing from the way my son was ignored she hasn't had much to do with children.

i disliked the whole experience. paddington arms is not a place i will ever visit again.

I have enjoyed meals all over NZ. I rate this restaurant very highly indeed for service, food and friendly/helpful staff. Well done Paddington Arms for getting this restaurant up and running -what a pleasant surprise compared to so many other restaurants , not just Invercargill restaurants. Final note.. forget the knockers - they would probably still complain if they were to find a $100 note on the pavement.
Frequent Diner
The staff are rude, the meals are absolutely rubbish. Very poor effort. No one at our table was impressed. 2 of our table were from England and were embarrassed that they call this an "English pub". If you enjoy the meal here you are very easily pleased. I just wish I could rate it zero stars as one is way too many.

Last Saturday our party dined at Paddingtons Arms - OH MY GOD! We eat out often probably 3-4 times a week all over NZ and this place is one of the best we have experienced for a long time.
The decor, staff, service and food were unreal!
Everyones meals were perfect and we had no wait times, lovely staff who were very friendly.
Prices are great and very reasonable, it was so good we went again the next morning for brunch!
Brunch was as great as the dinner with great staff and service once again, both times the place was packed and humming.
I can not wait to return to Invercargill and return to Paddington Arms, well done guys we were really impressed (which takes a bit I might add!!).
Keep up the good work you guys Rock!

Fanbloodytastic, Flannagan's was getting a bit tired, Paddingtons is fresh and new. Fantastic menu (just like you would get in England)Food is brilliant, Service is friendly all staff are smiling, prices are as you would expect them, reasonable. Atmosphere is fun and electric. This place as had an extreme make over and they have hit the nail on the head, two thumbs up from me!!

I have dined at "Paddies" 4 times now since the re-fit and can't wait for my next visit. The food is superb, the service is outstanding (True kiwi hospitality). Never before have my children been so well looked after in an Invercargill venue. An extensive menu and well thought out wine list. How anyone could argue this is beyond me. And "oh my god the gravy".

Had heard the advertising on the radio which said it was an "English Pub" style of place. We were greeted by a lady who was most unwelcoming. Her manner was stand-offish...bordering on rude. The bar lady was lovely. We didn't stay for a meal.

Our party of 7 of us dined here on Sunday night. The place wasn't full but we were told by a rather rude waitress to move from the table we sat at because it was prebooked....No reserved sign on it however. We were shown to a table with stools which did not suit one in our party with a bad back, thankfully she was able to get a chair. The guys had bangers and mash with an inedible rock hard pastry crust...yuk; the roast came with hardly any gravy and we had to ask for more; my 'old fashioned sherry trifle' came in a glass...watery tasteless custard, stale sponge and no sherry to be tasted whatsoever! RIP OFF! my sisters jam roly poly was very doughy and she said it was not nice either. Prices okay but food needs a shake up. This chef has been around for years so you would think he would know how to make the basics like custard, trifle, and yorkshire pudding?????
Menu is far too big and far too long!
July Update: Food better tonight except for asking for gluten free and getting a salad full of croutons!
