Review The Craypot - Kaikoura

Christina F.
We enjoyed a lovely seafood dinner at the Craypot Kitchen recently. We shared the large mussels in white wine as well as a half crayfish dinner. The seafood was fresh and flavorful. We finished with the tiramisu which had delicate chocolate and coffee flavors. The service was quite good they were friendly and attentive. If you’re looking for a well prepared seafood meal with great service. this is your place.

Fantastic! We thought we might be too late to be accommodated, as their last booking was at 7.30pm on a Monday, but they let us in at 7.45. My boyfriend had the half crayfish with chips and salad (85 NZD) and I had the fish of the day (monkfish) in an almond crumb with a white wine butter sauce with mash and veg (34 NZD). Or you could have fish, beer-battered chips and salad for 32 NZD. Fish of the day was so tasty and fresh! Then for dessert (15NZD) my boyfriend had chocolate brownies and berries and I had the coconut and citrus Panna cotta. Perfect! Friendly quick service too, despite it being full until closing time when we were there. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

The only dish you want to choose here is Crayfish. Available in various options, all beautifully cooked. And some of the best NZ wines - try the Wishbone.

Exceptional value for money. The tastiest green lipped mussels we have ever had. Service was excellent.

Friendly staff and relaxed environment with delicious food as well. We got the fish of the day, crayfish and calamari and all was enjoyed (delicious crayfish), portion sizes were generous and prices reasonable.

This place is amazing! Our group absolutely loved the ambiance and the service was delightful. We started with the garlic bread and after each of us took a bite knew the meal to come would blow us away simply because of how delicious the appetizer was (the flaky sea salt was such a perfect touch). The tiramisu is the "best" our group had ever had. Hands down. We couldn't recommend this place enough and wish all the best to the owner John!

Ripper dipper meal! We had the mussels, and would you believe, they cooked the. in a thai green curry! Un-be-liev-able! Great service with some witty replies. 10/10

Solid food, had the fish and chips as a main. Tasty chips but they get too fancy with the fish and the end result is not quite there. Caprese bread starter was a great choice, large and with the right amount of pesto and cheese 👌🏼. They could be a bit more generous with the cherry tomatoes; 5 is a bit miserly. Only other thing of note is the service, you get ignored for long periods. I even got interrupted during my order so one waitress could lecture another on the proper procedure.

Wow. Just a fabulous meal. Great fish and chips and my wife’s eggplant and zucchini lasagna was really tasty. My salad with the fish and chips was just awesome. One of the best meals on our road trip around the South Island.

Beautifully decorated. Great food if you pick out the onions.

Stopped in for lunch (a very late lunch at 2.30pm...) on our way home. Great wedges and lasagna. Friendly staff more than happy to accommodate. Thanks!

Dined at Craypot on Saturday 16/03/13. Paid $33 for Ribeye steak ordered medium rare, the place was almost empty save for one other table of diners and I was dining alone, It took 50 minutes for me to get my meal, what turned up was not ribeye but a thick cut of sirloin, first cut of the meat and it was apparent something was off, I believe this cheaper cut of meat was frozen and then too quickly defrosted hence the disgustingly long wait, needless to say the steak was ruined and the meal not worth even a fraction of what was charged. Do not dine here. Worst dining experience I have ever had.

Stopped in on way south from Marlborough Sounds. The service was very friendly without being overly professional. It seemed as though a family was running it with parents, kids and aunts etc all involved (not a bad thing I guess).
We had the seafood crepes and they were very nice, although the seafood was a little sparse. The kids had hotdog and chips and were what you would expect, so they loved it.
Prices were a little high for the meal itself but it was pleasant enough.

Easter Sunday driving south from Picton decided seafood at Kaikoura would be a good stop. The town was very busy but we found a table at Craypot cafe. Decor is very tired and the place is grimey. We were given a menu devoid of the burgers which were signwritten on the front window and which attracted son but were given another one when asked about them. Son ordered the burger and fries which was pretty ordinary with the burger dry and overcooked. I had seafood chowder which would have to be the most disgusting one I have ever had and I have had a few as it is my favourite dish. A seafood cafe in a seaside town should be full of delicious fishbits especially at $18. This bowl was full of surimi in a bland starchy base. Enough said but it's time that Craypot lifted it's game.
