Review The Point Cafe - Kaka Point

Experience the abundance of life. Sit by the windowsill. Watch the waves rise and fall. Very enthusiastic service. If I wasn't full, I would definitely order the seafood platter and seafood chowder. I squeezed my stomach, leaving a small space, and ordered a blue cod fish chips. Very satisfied.

A very nice seafood menu. I really enjoyed the seafood chowder. Also had the salt n pepper calamari which I would recommend

Seafood chowder was amazing, like creamy, potatoe super goodness. The wine list is nice and the mains are filling and delicious! Ring ahead to book a table.

They served the best fish and chips in the South Island of New Zealand. 😋

The food here is delicious - I had the seafood chowder, pan fried cod with potatoes and, seasonal veg and mixed berries meringue. Service was friendly and welcoming. Make sure you book in advance so you don’t miss out on this yummy dinner

Our family would always want to remember this cafe. The best cram chowder I have in life. The seafood was well cooked and the beef nachos was delicious. The staff happily help us take many family photos as this is the first trip out together after covid. Your place has created a special memories for us with your hospitality.

What a superb cafe and bar! The food we had today was 1st class and the setting is simply pristine Seafood platter, beef and the chicken tacos were outstanding The setting, overlooking the beach is excellent. Would give it more stars if I could

Best fish and chips I've ever had with a beautiful view. The restaurant is so artistic decorated with ocean-themed ornaments, making a vibrant vibes. The fireplace warms up the whole place in winter, which made me want to take a seat next to window, grab a cup of cappuccino and spend the whole sunny winter afternoon. Loved the dinning experience with my partner. Would like to come and visit again.

The seafood chowder was very delicious, a lot of seafood in a thick creamy soup. The other dishes were good as well! Great service too (:

For a chicken burger and chips lunch with a glass of Old Dark Speight's beer at a restaurant that has a window view of Kaka Point with three others during an excursion from Dunedin on Thursday, 17 August. What an enjoyable and relaxing time we had there on the way to Nugget Point lighthouse, where I didn't know about the port until I read the plaque about the original plan for the harbour channel via Clutha River Mouths that had not happened at Port Molyneux due to floods then. Imagine, Kaka could have been the suburb of Balclutha, perhaps in the land survey and town planning  surveyed by an unknown surveyor in the 19th Century, about the same time as Dunedin was founded by the Scottish settlers.

Ordered beef schnitzel and cod fish and chips. The fish n chips is very recommended, a lil bit small portion for me but quality is there. Such a Fine food. I enjoy it very much. Very friendly staff, and if you are lucky, you could get a table with the beach view.

Went for a mid-afternoon lunch so picked from the "bar snacks" menu although was very impressed by what was served, in paticular my nachos I ordered were phenomenal for the price, extremely delicious and there was a gorgeous sea view also. Staff were friendly and welcoming :)

From the friendly greeting when walking in the door to the beautiful food and wonderful service, make this a must-do if you are ever in the area. Stunning views of the coastline as well. Very well priced.

Great food, good service. A nice stop after visiting Nuggets point, before heading to Balclutha (30-40mins drive) or further. Ordered: Moroccan style chicken quesadilla, & Seafood platter for 1. 👍

A gem. Warm, wonderful service. We had beautiful locally brewed Catlins White IPA and perhaps the best mulled wine ever. All in front of a roaring fire and drop dead gorgeous views of the sea. But best of all was the Blue Cod, salad and chips. They were out of this world. Stop in. DON’T drive by

On holiday from Wellington and Amanda and I shared the seafood platter. Would definitely recommend this place. The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly and the seafood platter was excellent and included blue cod, calamari, mussels, prawns and scallops. In fact....we're going back again tonight!

Oh what a great spot to stop and have lunch on the way around the Caitlins. Food was great and the wine and beer cold! On a cold autumn or wintery day stay warm inside or if the sun is shining hit the outdoor spots and enjoy the front views overlooking the water or bask in the ambience of the back courtyard. Definitely worth stopping in!

We came out for dinner last night for our daughters birthday. Fantastic place for a meal out. Our meals were perfect, the children loved their colouring in books and we loved the special touch of the kitchen staff coming out singing happy birthday. Thanks so much we definitely have found our favourite South Otago place for dinner.

This is quickly becoming our favourite place to go out for dinner. Great varied menu. Pity chocolate brownie is no longer on the dessert menu, as it was amazing!!! Still great atmosphere and food. We'll be back

Disappointing meal tonight. Wrong order for one of us. Beef schnitzel burnt and stale. Blue cod meal for $26? 1 piece of fish and a tablespoon of veges. So unlike u guys !!!

Took friends for lunch today and we were all really impressed with the new higher standard of service and food. Highly recommend this as one of the best places to eat in the Clutha district. Great job and thank you.

We ordered the vegetarian pasta and was served a pasta with ham. Staff refused to correct the order without us ordering and paying for a new dish.

Great location. Just the pub/restaurant that suits the seaside environment. The beer we had before the meal hit the right spot! The Blue Cod - to die for!!! Sorry about the other folks.... but try getting that in Auckland at that price .... Thoroughly enjoyable, and recommended!!

Upmarket prices for a below average meal. We had two cooked breakfasts and 2 flat whites for $47. It was not a big meal, but I still left half of mine on the plate. The Point Cafe should either lower their prices or hire a good chef to justfy the cost of their meals. The restaurant setting is beautiful, good place for a beer, but definately not for a meal.

I went for a meal with my adult family last week. We sat at the table which had been reserved for us and waited for a menu. None appeared so we went and got one from the bar. We were told we had to order from the bar. We had a group of 6 people including one 80 year old. We started looking at the one menu and a staff member appeared and took it off us and told us to go to the bar to look at the menu!!! What would it cost to print off a few extra menus. We decided what we wanted and sent one person to order and were told we couldn't do that and had to order our own meals. It was all being paid for by one person!!! The meal was finally dumped on the table in front of us. Presentation was awful. Meal was average. Salads were on a side table open to all germs etc and not on a cooler. Don't know how long they had been there. This place has a monopoly and mostly overseas guests who I am sure would not return. Locals would use it more if it wasn't so pricey. Why not bar meal prices if there is no table service?

Just spent a week at Kaka Point. When we got there, we found out the restaurant had been closed since Xmas! But 3 days ago it got new owners and it opened up straight away. The food and service was great. Highly recommend the blue cod, it just melts in your mouth. :-)

my friend ordered 2 adult lunches and asked for the childrens meal to be split between 2 plates for her 2 & 4 yr old (as they were huge childrens meals). this was met with much grumbling. then myself & partner ordered our lunches. after a 50 minute wait, and enquiries at the counter, my friend purchased 2 bags of potato chips for her children who were by this time starving and unhappy. they charged us for the potato chips (obviously no sense of guilt for appalling service!). finally mine & partners mains arrived, and the waiter said "i take it you've all got your meals now". the original order of 4 meals still hadn't even arrived!!! asked for childrens meals to be cancelled, another 20 minute wait and 4 meals arrived (we were told they hadn't cancelled the orders for kids because they were already being cooked - too bad for them in my opinion!). the much anticipated meals finally arrived, were quite ordinary, with the blue cod being full of bones. not recommended.

Very disappointed. Very expensive considering the standard of the food was poor. I got the pasta which was very bland. The service was slow and poor - they even came and took our garlic bread away before we had finished eating it or even been served our mains! The vegetables that came with our meal were served for the whole table to share in a small bowl - certainly wasn't enough for us all to share - obviously a cost cutting tactic. We were celebrating a birthday and had bought a novelty cake along - they charged us $20 for the privelege of being able to supply our own cake - expensive considering we still had to cut it and serve it ourselves! I have been to much nicer restaurants where we have done the same thing and never been charged "cakeage". When delivering our meals to the table the waitress also managed to hit me in the head with the dish - twice! Certainly wouldn't be back. Have heard nothing but bad comments from other friends and family who have been here too.
