Review Gauchos Churrasco Bbq - Lower Hutt

Great place for a big meat dinner. There is a salad bar with some great salads, but don't over commit with these as the meats come sizzling to you on routissarie skewers and the dining staff will carve it off the skewers. Believe it not there is a dessert menu and they are all very nice. Staff are helpful and efficient. The bar is well stocked and there are great beers on tap and in the fridges. The only thing I have against it is the meat itself been simply BBQed, no marination, no special rubs or brines. Perhaps that is party of the appeal, as it's BBQ simply made. There is certainly a huge following as there are line out the door for hopeful diners.

Very great place to go for dinner. It's a buffet with different kinds of salads and veges and all you can eat meat for a set price. Great venue and delicious food! The lamb is the best!!

I loved the food. The staff was very helpful..I liked everything except brisket

For the price per head perfect yum and filling. And even better it's cheaper for kids. If you can fit dessert in, that bowl in pic, woulda done 2 people

Great place to eat with fantastic choice of meat and huge selection from the salad bar. The staff their are so friendly and educate you on the cuts of meat, the way it's cooked when they bring steel skewers full of meat. I highly recommend you visit here to fulfill your meat cravings :)

So good!!! Love this place. When I hear "all you can eat" I have low expectations on quality but everything is great here. Salads are amazing and the meat is delicious. Cocktails are great too the and staff are awesome! Highly recommend.

We enjoyed this meal so much! There were a lot of great things about it which made it a great night besides the delicious food. 1. Service was fantastic! And not by any one person, from the front of house gentlemen, to the waitresses to the men who brought the meat around. You all were so social and fun. 2. Environment - seating booth was great for us. Very tidy, lighting wasn't too bright or too dim. 3. The best part - the food! The yummiest meat I've tasted at a restaurant. And it was hard to pick a favourite as it was all good. My husband and I are excited to take his family there some time in the near future just to experience it all.

Our first time their and a Family of 6 it was amazing. As long as our kids were happy, the parents are happy. Great food and love the different choices plus to eat as much as you can in 2hrs. Damn we only lasted 20 mins. Great services and good environment. Recommend this place to all my friends and Family 👌👍💜❤

If you like roast meat of many varieties, this is the place for you. It’s an “all you can eat” in a 2 hour sitting and believe me, 2 hours is plenty. They just keep bringing large skewers of meat and place slices at you table to help yourself. There’s a way to take a break and restart the service. They had a very good self-service salad bar as well. Good service and recommended.

Meat dry and tasteless except chicken which was arversge

Not sure whats happened to this place but we came here this week and we actually left hungry. Meat was dry and brought out on plates with what looked like beef jerky - its the first time we've never turned the cow to red....and the place wasn't full but we waited and waited only to leave disappointed and stopped into another place to get some food. We were once big fans of your establishment but will take family elsewhere and wont be making the recommendation as slowly but surely we've noticed the decline in quality of food and service each time hoping it was a once off which is why you now warrant this review!

If you love eating lots of meat this is the place it’s all you can eat with lots of sides to choose from I highly recommend this place. It’s bomb!

We were looking forward to coming here after reading all the rave reviews, however our visit was a letdown. We booked a table for 7:45pm and upon arrival were told we would have a 2 hour all you can eat buffet experience. Fantastic. Half an hour later we were told they had run out of pork ribs and pineapple. Several dishes in the salad bar were also near empty. This was all within less than an hour of arriving. By the time an hour had passed we were asked to make our final trip to the salad bar and for final meat orders so that they could clean up. Certainly not the 2 hour experience we had been sold for $42.90. Upon paying the bill we provided our feedback and were offered a couple of 2 for 1 vouchers. The staff member was apologetic but not sure if we will be back in a hurry. Don't accept a booking if you don't have the food to serve as advertised and don't state on your website that you are open til late if you are trying to vacate your customers in a hurry to close.

I do not reccomend this place, it's not what it used to be. The meat is basically raw & undercooked the salad bar isn't fresh the food is stale and left there since who knows when. 2 colleagues got gastro from dining here hence why they aren't at work today. You're better off going to McDonald's down the road for a big mac combo than eating the crap they dished up lastnight

5 star quality with a fun twist!

Was recommended this place over a year ago and finally went during our last stay in Wellington and fell in love! The service is amazing with very friendly staff and the food was sublime. The meat is brought straight from the BBQ to your table and carved right there in front of you.. I don't know if it was policy but our server would show us the colour of the meat and let us decide if we were happy with it before putting it on our plates. The salad bar was very impressive also - not your typical buffet salad but had lots of diverse options that we had never seen before, we suspect the dishes were based off the traditional South American cuisine and was awesome to see.

Not too pricey, great food and awesome atmosphere; if you're looking for something new but still comforting we couldn't recommend this place enough!

By far exceeded all expectations especially being from Auckland. Had my brothers graduation dinner here lastnight and was awesome! Friendly staff and such a cosy and spacious environment. The only let down was the lamb, being overcooked and dry, a few of the roasted pumkin wasnt cooked long enough and still quite hard but overall great place, warm and friendly!

Great place for a big family gathering! Awesome range of sides as well as meat! Wish we had space for dessert! Was a good experience for my first time having this sort of dining!

Loved this place! Great vibe, awesome service and way more food than you can eat. MEAT HEAVEN 😍😅 the salad bar is incredible too. Sooooo many choices👌 will be back and not have so much salad so I can try a dessert lol

Fantastic food, great service and my number one place to go to for a buffet meal in the Wellington region. Can not fault at all, the polenta chips are to die for and all the meat that comes out is cooked to perfection!

I LOVE this place! Highly recommended if you love eating meat! And for the others among you, there is a very tidy vege/salad bar! Going for my birthday - where else! I found the service to be first rate, helpful and friendly too! Makes a BIG change from other places I've been to recently. Looking forward to going back on Sunday!

My friend and I were glad the staff were able to find a table for us. We had a great night. It was our first time and I'm definitely coming back! All you can eat salad with a variety of different foods. We had chicken wrapped in bacon, lamb, pork and beef and then we were full. So my advice is, don't fill up on salad no matter how good it looks! Staff were good. I couldn't hear what 1 guy was saying, I recommend them to take their personalities out of conversation a little. Remain professional. Don't put my friend down because she thought it was a certain meat when it wasn't. See you soon :)

I visited Gauchos a couple weeks ago after a lot of my friends recommended it, not only was the food great but the service was one of the best I’ve experienced in along time. I’m not sure what our waiters name was, but he friendly , knew his stuff and had a bit of humour to add to the table! Very pleased to the point where I made this profile just to compliment him! Will definitely be back next week some time 😊 also the bite tasting platter was a amazing, I ate so much food and could still fit it in

Really enjoyed the food and service at Gauchos- great concept for the meat lover. Took the fam for a birthday treat, drinks and mains; at $40 set price you really hope that you'd eat your moneys worth, unfortunately with 2 teenage girls and a 10 year old boy we probably didn't eat our quota. Non the less it was delicious and served with passion and knowledge of the produce. The help yourself salad bar was good, lots of variety and some sauces, bread and potatoes to accompany the main event. The beef was our fav, also enjoyed the lamb, pork and chicken. Overall a great night, would recommend and suggest you allow a few hours to make the most of the set price menu.

Have been twice.. great place.. 4.5 given as second time we arrived and the place was pitch black because of a power cut. They offered a free drink while we waited it out but we left because we did not know how long it would take. Still I like the gesture

I was told to try this place at least once by a friend who raved about it. Was not disappointed!! The salad selection was amazing and very satisfying. The polenta chips were awesome and when the meat was served we were impressed with the flavours and fast service. The atmosphere is lively and the service attendees just super friendly. Would Go again happily!

Visited here last night 15/7/17 with the family for an all you can eat dinner. $40 each.
We were shown to our table, where they brought water and glasses, then a staff member explained how it works. You have a bull shaped piece of wood on your table, red on one side green on the other, if you want them to keep coming with meat you leave it green up, when you're full (or totally stuffed in my case) you turn it so the red is showing.

There is a salad bar too, but if you like juicy succulent meat I would only have a small amount of salad. Hahaha. I was too full but I was longing for another piece of the beef.

A man would bring out a large skewer of meat and slice how much you want and leave it on the wooden block at the side of the table. Then 15 mins later he would come again with a different meat, and again etc. The beef was sooo delish. It was all good in fact.

The staff were very friendly and very attentive, the place was clean and inviting and paying was easy. I loved this place.

We will be back again and again.

Only 2.5 out of 5 as I found this place to be average at best. The salad bar was outstanding and selection of sauces... a particular highlight was the shrimp cockatail salad which I could have devoured all night.

The service was slow and it was only a Tuesday night, then when the meat came out it was stop start and a little frustrating. Chicken ok, sausage awful, pork not bad as well as the beef. Lamb - great. Really well cooked.

Based a little like wildfire chain in Aus and place in Auk, I wouldn't probably return here by choice.
How did I not know about this place? So friken good. All you can eat salad and meat for $40 is a fantastic deal. The salad bar is fresh with a mix of hot and cold dishes. Plenty to choose from and could eat it alone but you seriously won't want to because all the meat delivered to your table is simply delish. Certainly get your monies worth here. The desserts do cost extra but you probably won't fit it in after that feast. Service was fantastic too. Will definitely be back.
This was my review after my first visit back in July 2017

Forth visit to gauchos Oct 2018 was extremely disappointing. We wanted to show it to a couple of friends. This time though The food wasn't that great at all. They have changed the menu and all of our favourite meats were no longer getting served. There was no chicken wrapped in bacon, parmesan pork, sausage or hearts and I was really looking forward to the polenta chips again but they don't serve them anymore. (I had no idea why as they seem really popular looking at the other reviews)The meat they did serve was under seasoned and quite frankly boring. We were at a end of the room and the servers would always miss our table. We had to go up to the bar 3 seperate times to ask for drinks and desserts. Not the usual great service we were used to. Based on this visit I wouldn't return again.

Loved it, tasty, friendly and cool. Make a booking if you are going later, I went at 5.15 pm on a Monday and it was quiet so we got lots of attention, but the meat was divine mmhhh

I went there about a month ago for the first time, I can honestly say this is the best restaurant I've been to in a very longtime. The meat was delicious marinated to perfection, the salad bar has a big selection to choose from and is really yummy. The desserts are to die for I enjoyed the tres leches the most best piece of cake I've had in my whole entire life! The service of staff was impeccable, going there again tomorrow night for dinner so looking forward to it. I highly recommend this restaurant it is well worth the money and fails to disappoint.

WHERE DO I EVEN START!!!!!!!!!!! this place is amazing as a big eater and a picky eater this place has won my heart iv been there 4 times now. The meat is incredibly tasty the choice of different salads etc are incredible. the servers are great as well really friendly and fun to talk with. It feels like its too good to be true to have a place that offers all you can eat and at this quality REALLY HOPE THE STANDARDS DO NOT GO DOWN WITH TIME!!!!!. If one change could be made it would be if only they could add a desert area understandably the place is not large so where would they put it but still would of been great to have that but for 40 bux WORTH EVERY $$. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! one advice if you are a big eater do not go on busy nights so friday and sat unless you get tere after 9...you will not be satisfied with the amount of meat you get also do not go in big groups on busy nights again you will not be satisfied with the quantity

When you get something right, the magic simply happens.

It's impossible to fault this place.

I booked a table online for our anniversary (it's a very simple process). As we were getting hungry, I rang to change it to one hour earlier - this was handled without any issues.

Upon arrival, we were immediately taken to our table and given water. We then got explained how everything works as we hadn't been there before.

First, we went to check out the Salad Bar - a great variety of really well-presented, high quality salads, salsas, and so much more. We went back for more, but still couldn't try it all - there is just so much choice.

We then went back to our table, turned the Bull to its green side (you'll get this once you go), and a couple of guys started bringing us the most amazing meats we've ever had - there is Lamb, Bacon-wrapped Chicken (a bit too salty), Parmesan Pork, Beef (which was insane!!), and Chorizo sausage. There's also grilled Pineapple, covered in allspice (I'm not a pineapple fan and this thing was to die for) as well as........ chicken hearts (which I loved!!!).

We literally ate until we couldn't breathe anymore! Sadly, there was no room for the Banana Split, which I understand is incredible.

The service - fantastic!

The food - oh wow!

The atmosphere - really good!

Value for money - outstanding!!

After my last massive disappointment with The Borough (WHG's Tawa restaurant), I am absolutely blown away by Gauchos Churrasco BBQ! I very highly recommend it to everyone and I just can't wait to go back!!

I have no idea how long this place has been here but I wish I knew about it a lot sooner! I only found out about it from seeing a post on Facebook within in closed group I belong to ... otherwise I never would have known it was there. It's situated behind Station Village in Lower Hutt, so not visible from the road and there isn't any obvious signage.

As soon as I found out about the place I booked a table ... it's South American all-you-can-eat BBQ meat, salads and breads for $40 per head. Desserts are extra for around $10.00.

We were seated, water was poured, we were allocated tongs and the whole shabang was fully explained.

You go and load up with your breads, salads & sauces from the self-service buffet.

Complimentary cassava chips and black garlic aoli were placed on the table.

Each table has a little cut out of a bull on it - one side of it is red, the other side is green. When you are ready for the waiting staff to bring over meat you turn your bull over so the green side is up. When you need a break or time to catch up on your salad, turn it over so it's red. This signals to the staff to not bring over any more meat until you turn it green again. This made for an awesome dining experience as it was something different.

The salad bar included a full range of South American veggies and sauces .... the chimichurri is particularly divine! It would be impossible to be disappointed with the buffet.

The meats included, parmesan encrusted pork, beef, bacon-wrapped chicken, lamb, and a chorizo sausage with a massive kick to it. We were also treated to grilled pineapple. Some of the meats were sliced off and that's where the tongs come in use ... you grab it as it falls. Others came in chunks. They all came to the table on huge skewers.

We finished with the Chichotorta dessert - a chocolate cake layered with caramel condensed milk.

The decor and atmosphere were perfectly matched to the food, and I felt like I was in Argentina or Brazil.

The one thing I would do differently next time is to not have the chorizo sausage mid-meal, or even at all. As much as I like spicy food, this sausage overwhelmed everything and I couldn't taste anything else after I'd had a couple of bites of it. It's not Gauchos fault ... it was mine. This was a practice/reconnaissance run ... next time I will know better how to pace myself.

The staff are fantastic! We will be going back again and again and again ...

Feb 2017:

Went back and must say was a EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED the salad bar had no chimichurri or tomatillos. ESSENTIAL !!!!!

It also took ages for our initial drinks to arrive & I was virtually barked at for following up on them.

The parmesan encrusted pork was dry as a bone; we had to specifically request the glazed pineapple; and the ice cream sandwich required a hammer and chisel to get through it - it was actually inedible.

What up?

Went here for my birthday dinner, I hadn't heard anything about it before. The salads, vegetables, and breads are available at a self serve buffet and then at your table the waiter brings large skewers of a variety of meat around and you can have what you like, as much of it as you like! Everything was delicious, I especially liked the Parmesan crusted pork. The buffet salads and vegetables alone were worth filling your plate with too. The atmosphere is really nice we were seated in a corner spot and they had several tables reserved for groups. I think Gauchos is perfect for adults, families, work outings - everyone really. The desserts were also really nice and I had a passionfruit and white chocolate caipirinha to drink which was surprisingly delicious. Great service too! I will definitely return :)
