Review Ayutthaya Thai Restaurant - Lower Hutt

Phill Hart
Beautiful, generous food and service - all in one. What can I say? I used to come here years ago when I was closer to the area. Came back to try after all these years and it was better than ever! I really don't think you can go wrong on the menu to be honest, no matter what you choose. Very reasonable prices considering the quality. Generous helpings - lovely atmosphere. The service was IMPRECABLE, wonderful, and faultless. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I would strongly recommend Ayutthaya Thai Restaurant. An incredibly diverse menu to choose from. Only a professional restaurant could pull this off - and they do.

This Thai restusrant is found in Jackson St in Petone, Lower Hutt. Their service was very fast. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. Serving sizes were very good. Prices were reasonable, my green curry chicken and rice was $20. The decor was very pleasant. I would go again.

Good portion sizes, had the yellow curry was a bit watery but still tasted nice with lots of pieces of meat. But other than that great staff, clean and tidy restaurant and the food didn't take too long to arrive at the table.

Best pad see iew I’ve had in the Wellington region. And the carrot flower was super cute.

We visited with some business guests again last Saturday, and were not disappointed, some of the same staff are still there. The meals were excellent as was the service. The restaurant was packed out, fortunately we had booked earlier. Can't go wrong here for an authentic Thai meal. My rating is now 5 star, I couldn't fault it. My review 2 years ago:- Nice friendly staff, disappointing that it hasn't got a liquor licence though. Meal selection excellent, and well presented. MSG free if you don't want it included, also they provide gluten free meals.

Have been going here for years and love it.. ventured back post covid... felt like it was maybe a new chef because the food was amazing, it normally is good but we had the tastiest meal ever. We had a chicken kumara curry, spicy soup, pork n mushroom money bags and spring rolls. Flavour had really stepped up and I cant wait for more

Came here for a work dinner, we all ordered dishes for us to share. Bit of a wait for our food which is understandable when its so busy. Service was pretty good, always refilled our glasses when need be. I'm definetly coming here again. I loved it.

Have been there twice recently (Sept 17) and loved the food and atmosphere. Well priced as well. Good dining and nothing pretentious about the place. Taking the family out tomorrow for tea and they were all keen to go there again - only two weeks after the last visit!

Love this place and its food and the lovely staff xx

Absolutely the best Thai and the taste is full of spices that make it mouth watering and wanting more I will be back Thankyou

Best Thai I've ever had. My mum ordered some extra food just before we left so she could have more the next day. Service is outstanding and the decor is really nice

Absolutely loved it! Had an awesome atmosphere a long standing restaurant that has lost none of it's charm, vegan and vegetarian options as well. Definitely would go again!

Well I have to say.. I went to Ayutthaya last night... I Always book the Window seat.. the food here is amazing as is the time you get served and the food cannot be faulted and Very reasonable... However up until very recently I would not have said the Customer service was that great... Last night - I didn't get my window table.. however the lady in charge came up to me and touched my shoulder... "Sorry I couldn't give you your window seat this time' she said - I was blown away.. wow... I didn't even know she had 'noticed' me :) Just shows you. Not surprisingly this place is Always very busy and Bookings Are Essential 100/100 :) Previous review Food is fantastic..Customer service not so. Cannot fault the food, its very nice and very reasonable but the service they provide when you ring up or pay is not. Would be really good if someone who spoke and could understand English dealt with customer services. Makes otherwise a great dining experience somewhat disapointing...

The service was great and meal was ready quickly, but the food was a bit average.

Nice people. Good food

The staff here could show a little more interest in there customers - but apart from that I can not fault a single thing. This is the best Thai I’ve ever eaten in my life.

Worst meal I have had in a very long time. Taste like it is yesterday's left overs and it is burnt. Will not return to this resturant. Very disappointing and waste of money!!

Best green curry in the region. My new favourite Thai restaurant. Will definitely be back for more! Good prices, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Was very busy and was made late due to lack of parking in Petone, so account for that if booking.
Food here is delicious and well presented, well priced and they even have a takeaway option that I will be trying soon.
Can never go wrong with the pad thai and yellow curry. The restaurant is clean and the staff are friendly. Have been going here for years and highly recommend.

Been dropping into this place on and off for years. Always packed and the food is always good. The menu is extensive and everything we've tried over the years has been good. The service is professional and no complaints.

Looking for an Italian food but end up here because of the gusty wind. Nice and warm restaurant with cozy atmosphere. We had pad thai and the tom yum. Its really nice. But they need to improve their staffs customer service. No smile in their face.

One of my favourite dines around. My favourite is Pla Rad Prik - deep fried fish in red curry with coconut cream. We always take newbies to Thai food here.

We ended up here by accident tonight - we were actually heading for K-Sing but it was ... well ... shut. It looks like its either going or being renovated. There was no sign on the door to say why it was closed.

Anyhoo ... this place was an experiment. We began with roti & peanut sauce, spring rolls, and fish cakes.

The roti was a little over-done so it was a bit rubbery. Sort of like how it goes when you microwave it again after it has gone cold - the accompanying peanut sauce was very nice. The spring rolls were also overdone so a bit tough. The fish cakes .... OMG! They were not fluffy and light ... they had no taste at all and my initial thought was they were cut from orange-stained dog roll. It was like eating a rubber make-up foundation applicator. I don't think they were fish cakes at all. More like something you'd stick in your shoe to prevent blisters! I've never experienced anything quite like them in my life and hopefully never will again. I took part of one home to conduct an experiment on my dog but even he wouldn't eat it. Just as well as it likely would've given him pancreatitis.

Our mains were the prawn green curry and ginger chicken, with a bow of rice to share. The ginger chicken was average. The green curry was very watery and a very small portion for $22.50. The flavours were there but it all lacked finesse ...

The whole meal (including a drink) cost $69. The staff and decor were great and the service quick, but it was a oncer for us .

Follow up: It's the next day and I have food poisoning.... fortunately, my dog doesn't!

been twice now, somewhat disappointed both times. a couple of our orders are inedible. to be honest i cannot recommend this to friends. so so.

Best Thai food in town & the staff even remember our usual orders. Nice traditional decor. Food yummy, never a huge delay even when restaurant full.

Loved the food. The service could use a little work, I think the word gruff would sum it up. It is a busy place but they could do with sorting out the front desk for seating people and paying.
Food wise, the only dish we were not sure about was the Pad Thai that Miss Muffin ordered. It tasted of sweet chilli sauce, it was OK but not what we would expect of a Pad Thai. Miss was fine though as she ate rather a lot of my lovely Penang Chicken curry. We also had stir fried beef with sweet basil and chilli paste, it was good and nice and spicy.
A bonus of this place is the BYO wine and beer but you do need to book.

My local Thai spot. I recommend the Yang Tid Mun. Delicious. Also they have great Tom Kha Ghai also. The lady who owns it is nice however i get the feeling that younger girls heart isn't entirely into the job.
Lesley Hooson
Brilliant friendly service. A bit slow when very busy, but worth the wait! The most amazing garlic prawns you'll ever taste and you get 14 of them! Compared to 6 I got at a more expensive Thai restaurant, plus they are smothered in garlic, so yummy! Very good value, as loads of food. We all loved it! BYO is also a bonus and they don't charge for this. Definitely worth a visit, but you do have to book, as it is SO good!Highly recommended.

Had a late night meal here. It was fine. Nothing exceptional - but not bad. Service was friendly and food did not take ages. It was cooked from scratch.

It was our first time dining there in this cozy and warm eatery.
We were the first customers there at the beginning of dinner time, this somewhat probably explained why the service was quite slow.
The two of us ordered 2 Mix Appetizers, Lamb Gaeng Ped, Pork Yang Tid Mun and Ta Lay Lui Fire.
Food quality aside, the thing that bothered me was that we got served after another couple, who were there after our appetizers and ordered minutes later. They were served dish by dish, and only within 15 minutes, for 2 mains and 1 appetizer while we were waiting for 18 minutes for our main course, after ordering for 26 minutes. Another minus for the service.Later on, we were served all 3 main dishes, which we did intend to share one after another, at the same time. I can pass this but my partner would not like the food to be cooled off by the air-conditioner.
Mix Appetizers: They were all deep fried, the stuffing was fine and flavorsome; the wrapping, however, was burnt and brownish, each one of them, which means they re-used the oil too many times.Ta Lay Lui Fire: I would say it was quite good, quite fresh. A minus for this was that the grilling hadn't been cared enough to be perfected, somehow it felt like we were having "fried" seafood rather than crustily grilled.
Pork Yang Tid Mun: Another quite good, quite fresh, tender and flavorsome one. And also, a minus as the same problem of the Ta Lay Lui Fire.
Lamb Gaeng Ped: The portion was quite small, comparing to other dishes, which were quite generous. The taste was good and smooth with sliced bamboo shoots, the lamb however was unexpectedly chewy rather than tenderized and slow-cooked.
The staff was quite nice with a welcoming smile, and very attentive to our table.

I would come back again and try their Tom Kha Mai in some time.

We love this restaurant.. The ambience, the food and the owner is very friendly... Mix appetiser is a must.. :)

I really love this place, makes me feel like I'm in Thailand! so delicious and great prices also - not to mention friendly staff.

We go here often it is one of our favourite places to eat, the food is cheap and tasty, lots of flavour. We have always had a good experience here and love coming. If you want somewhere that has good prices and great food this is the place.

Our family went to K. sing to celebrate Father's day, but it didn't open. So we crossed the road to here.Very busy that day. We had to wait for a long time for the first dish. Dom Yum Gong (soup) was quite salty and sour, not much other flavours, a bit disappointed after at less half hour waiting. The next one was mix appetizers. All deep-fried with very dark colour that meant the oil had been used for very long time, but kids loved them. All the main courses were Kiwi style but the tastes were quite good .

The timetable when you dine at Ayutthaya will consist of something like this:

10 minutes of waiting before your orders are taken.
50 minutes before your entrees are served.
1 hour and 25 minutes before your mains are served.

Waiting an hour and twenty-five minutes for good food is ridiculous enough, but even more ridiculous when the food is sub-standard, tasteless and burnt. Nothing to compliment about the food, whatsoever.

Staff have very poor English communication skills, not being able to comprehend our requests and speaking in an incoherent manner. They should at least take the effort to be more forthcoming with customer requests and questions.

I also noticed that the only cutlery present on the table was a serving spoon and a fork. Knives were absent.
Retrospectively reflecting on this, I now understand how dangerous these knives would be, when placed in the hands of angry, frustrated diners.

When asked if I would like a doggie bag to take home my left-overs, I promptly declined. Alas, I lacked the wit then to tell the server I loved my dog too much to subject it to such abuse.

Came here for dinner last night and was immediately greeted by the most unfriendly staff! Never a smile and we always seemed to be an inconvenience. We ordered Green Chicken Curry which was average and small; thai fried rice which was burnt in some parts and spring rolls for the appetizer which were nothing to rave about. Will not bother to return. A bit of a waste of prime Jackson St real estate.

Highly recommended by a past colleague of mine for the food and prices we have since visited here on many occasions and it is by far one of our fav places to eat.

Beautiful food.

Always fresh and very good value for money.

Lovely surroundings.

Highly recommend the red wine chicken wings! Thinking about them never ceases to make my mouth water.

We find the manager always attentive and always lovely. She remembers us each time we are there which amazes me as the last time we could get here was a couple of years ago due to having a young child.

The manager works hard to ensure things tick over well.

We did have a little bit of a longer wait that usual this time however compared to many restaurants, 20 minutes for entrees was nothing and from there it was all uphill.

A great place!

I was so proud of this restaurant but not anymore. Food quality gone down. In veges there are nothing but cheap stuff. No waterchesnut, no baby corn, no baby bamboo. And the food is nothing like Thai food. I lived in Thailand four months and I know what Thai food is like. And like other person said, no smile from any staff. Head lady is like Hitler. Honestly no more Ayutthaya

I have been getting ayutthaya thai (takeaway and dine in) for over 4 years now and love it here. It is my favourite Thai restaurant in Wellington. I have been to many Thai restaurants in UK, middle east and Asia (including Thailand) and this food is up there with my top 5! Service is not exactly wonderful, but sort of reminds me of my time in Thailand, so makes it more of an authentic Thai experience! My favourites are the veggie spring rolls, red curry and pad thai. yummmmm! Check this Thai restaurant out!

Went there on a Saturday night with a group about 16. Service good but we thought the food was very average, having had tried a few Thai restaurants in Wellington that were much more authentic and tastier. Would only recommend if you don't want your food to be too spicy. Average $20 per head sharing entrees and main courses.

I had booked the restaurant two weeks earlier, double checked and confirmed that everything was ok and a booking was there for 5 people. On the day when we arrived to my shock and horror, we discovered our booking was cancelled. We were left stranded out on the footpath. I believe that they had overbooked and so cancelled our booking. Fortunately we found a lovely place down the road- Lok Lok Steamboat-great food and lovely service.

I am currently sitting at the restaurant since I have arrived I have had extremely rude service, first the owner complains that I didn't answer to confirm the reservation when she rang 2 hours before hand, then they bring 1 entree at a time and we have been waiting half an hour for our main. if u wanna have a bad restaurant experience come here, food is average!!!
Kiwirose
Love the food! Its so good to know when you feel like thai, your going to be getting very satisfying and generous meals. The service is not what i would call superb, but seems more authentic the way it is. Gets a bit cold by the door, but were allowed to move.

We have had several enjoyable meals at Ayutthaya, where the food is consistently of a very high standard and home to the best roti in town. This time, we shared pork mince and prawns in a spring roll wrapper as an entree, great with sweet chilli sauce. We had a thin red chicken curry with steamed rice (charged separately) and fried rice with whole prawns for our main courses - yummy! Front of house service can be somewhat abrupt but service at the tables is prompt and efficient, with water glasses are constantly refilled. A favourite of ours, Ayutthaya is almost always full.

Our Favourite Thai Restaurant and we are regulars. in the last year we have dined there almost weekly and the food is consistently great and excellent value for money. Decor is authentic and up to date, service is attentive and food great. Give it a go whether there is two of you or twenty.
Annita
This place was fantastic! We had a group of 8 which at first seemed a little cramped but the food more than made up for it. Casual atmosphere lent to it's charm. Definitely would recommend.
Melissa
Great food, restaurant seating a bit squashed.
Joanna
This place rocks! Best cheapest take away thai.
I have only dinned in twice but found the service and food quality equally impressive.
It is not a fine dining experience but wonderful for groups, family or a causal dinner.
Hilarey Barton
the food here is usually superb, but the service sucks. there is a server who is hired specifically to lurk behind you and reach over you with a heavy water jug even if you havent had a sip of your water, the place is often closed for long periods of time for no reason, and the woman is rude both over the phone and in person
Radhika Pearce
We had dinner at the restaurant yesterday and In my opinion the taste of food was very different to what we had before. I used to love going there fore deep fried fish in red curry sauce, I found now the fish seems to be cooked prior and is not crispy and the dish was served lukewarm. Pad Thai is supposed to be sweet & sour which turned out very sweet. My first experience was very good impressive, but my last two dining experience was not so good. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, restaurant staff are very friendly. I think the food should be served hot and specially fish needs to cooked on spot not precooked which is what I felt it was because of the rubbery texture. I am not sure but it seems there has been a change in the chef that's why the difference in taste.
Chris Houston
The food here is superb - really good - but we do not go any more because the head woman is ignorant and rude beyond the pale. I will not eat out anywhere where I am made to feel like I should kiss the restaurateur's feet for honouring me with a table.

Learn some manners.

This would have to be one of the best thai meals ever created, my wife and I have been several times and thoroughly love the food, the only thing stopping a 5 star rating is perhaps the service could be impropveed some but fantastic fantastic meals, AAA+++
Puku Princess
Small and quaint but robust in food, ambience and buzz. Good eating places can almost fade in the background. There's no flashy signage and you can be forgiven for driving past the place if it weren't for the gold signage on the window. Staff are attentive, often refilling your carafe, the food is really good. Make sure to read the menu thoroughly as to how strong the dish is, the prices are very reasonable for the portion size. Make sure to order the fish and pad Thai. Both times I've been there it's packed so book in advance.
