Review Go Bang Espresso Cafe - Lower Hutt

The food here is so good - and almost all vegan or vegetarian with heaps of gluten free options as well. The coffee is great, service is usually pretty fast and friendly. Highly recommend for a brunch/lunch date.

Wicked menu, especially if you're vegan! Generous portions for the price. Was extremely hard to choose from the many amazing options! I liked the quirk of the place too - definitely had great character and friendly people to match. Will be back soon!

Like the decor & great coffee - but what really makes this place shine are the food & service. Outstanding! Came to Petone today just to go here - am working my way through their organic vegetarian menu & loving everything. This is a pic of the protein bowl (crispy tofu, falafel, avocado, spiced carrots & hummus)

Great and unique menu. Largely Vegetarian as their speciality, but still offer all options.

Many dishes are gluten free/vegan by default. Nice coffee.

I had the best long black here that I've had for a very very long time elsewhere. Unbelievably good. Chocolate chunk cookie was amazing. I have to go back to try out the menu. Can't wait.
Richard Bacon
Awesome vegan and veggy food. Excellent coffee and a cool atmosphere. Sustainability never tasted so good!

Loved this place. The food exceeded my expectations, the atmosphere was lovely and relaxed, the staff (Paulina) was lovely. Can't wait to go back.

We went here for a team breakfast about a month or so ago, not everything is on the menu so ask, I did and got what I wanted, service and coffee is great
Chris Dean
Great coffee and very accommodating of a group as we have our work meetings with 10 of us there once a month.
Melanie Russell
Delicious food and friendly staff. Caters for almost all dietary requirements eg vegan, gluten-free, paleo.

Great food! Great service, highly recommend this under rated cafe. The coffee is fantastic, it’s a little out Of the way from the city but well worth the drive

I heard so much about this place but was disappointed. The staff seemed frazzled and forgot a coffee. But happily made another. It wasn’t the best coffee Tate’s milky and warm. I ordered the potato cakes . Made really well but not much on the plate for the price. The cafe looks run down and the seating could use replacing I felt kind of grossed out sitting on a big hole of exposed foam with who knows what might be hiding in it. All in all the
Place felt a bit depressing and tired.. I hope this cafe can get a makeover someday.

Sunday breakfast at Go Bang. I've been here a couple of time but it's been a while. We heard that the place had a lot of veggie and vegan options so we were real keen to give it a try.

We arrived about 8:45am, and it was pretty busy already. It was a cold day and pretty cold in there too. There were a number of great sounding dishes but we decided on:

Drinks: a large trim flat white and a green tea. Food: the pancakes and Vege Bang breakfast, minus the eggs. We were offered tofu as a replacement so we went with that.

Drinks arrived and although my coffee was good it was luke warm. Not terrible but not great either. I mentioned it but there wasn't anything they could do really. No drama.

Breakfasts arrived and the Vege Bang was some tofu on toast. The waiter realised he'd made a mistake when entering it. These things happened.

The pancake arrived and that's exactly what it was. One huge thick pancake. We realised that would be enough for both of us, so rather than wait for the Vege breakfast we just got a refund. Which they were happy to do.

The pancake wasn't what we were expecting but we figured let's give it a try. Unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. The berries and banana pieces were cooked inside; as part of the batter. The pancake itself was like eating a sponge cake. If the berries and banana had been a compote it could have worked but as it was it just wasn't for us and not that pleasant. A portion of it was slightly undercooked and tasted like batter, so after eating about a quarter each we just weren't enjoying it at all and gave up.

I spoke to them and they were really good about it and offered me a refund. I was happy to pay for the drinks.

It was a real shame and I think we just had an off experience. I would like to go back to try some of the other dishes that sounded really good, but I wouldn't try the pancake again.

Staff were very pleasant.

Exceptional quality and service. Hubby thinks the scrambled eggs are the best he's ever had. Wish we'd taken a pic before eating! Excellent value for money. Description says average $60 for two but each time with 2 adults and child, all with meal n drinks, ~$45 total. Be hard pressed to convince me to choose anywhere else now :-)
Also so impressed by staff every time.
We've had the chickpea curry, protein bowl, mushrooms, and scrambled eggs with siracha and more and so, good! 5 stars seems unrealistic but because the prices are really reasonable, bumped it up to 5. Wonderful business.
Oh and the coffee - 5 stars on it's own. Love!
Edit: photo from previous visits added :-)

Best coffee. Best food. Best staff. Best banter. This is where I spend a vast amount of my life money and time. Have been a loyal patron for over a year and I'm not sure what I'd do without them tbh.

Good coffee and an OK date scone. We really liked the service here by our friendly waiter and were grateful for how baby friendly the cafe is. Didn't realise that it is basically a vegetarian menu.

This place used to be my favorite but nowadays I seldom go there. Why? I think the owner changed. Coffee taste a bit different and Staff service could be better. Food is mediocre. Most importantly, please spend some $ for seats! Don't know but it is not the place I have known for many years. So I moved on. Nah for me.

First time eating here with the boyfriend today. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We LOVED the Cumin mushrooms! Will definitely come back to try other food on the menu.👍🏻

Coffee was excellent. Ordered huevos rancheros and it was a complete bloody joke, over abundance of beans which don't belong in the dish. Total absence of peppers in the sauce, eggs were obviously poached some time ago in advance and not cooked in the sauce like they should be, soggy flour tortillas instead of corn, toppings were medicore at best (seriously what is that cheese/hummus thing), only further contributing to the soggyness and what should be a light and tasty, simple dish was quite disappointing. Currently writing this with an unpleasant stomach thanks to it. The other person i went with ordered eggs on toast and they looked bloody great though.

Beautiful food, generous portion sizes, best black pudding I've ever eaten.

Great atmosphere and super accommodating to our large group.
One let down with one particular staff member who rudely told us to sit down while we were at the counter trying to order, didn't greet us for another ten minutes and then proceeded to hide behind her iPad while taking our order. Sort her out and I will be back again.

It’s always good when you can find somewhere that, on a Sunday, when no decisions can be made, you know you’ll be getting a good meal no matter what. Go Bang, Petone, looks from the outside like nothing too special. It has several tables outside which on a Sunny day, you need to be quick to grab. Inside, a section of food sits on the counter (try the scones, they are divine!) Or if you’re lucky enough to grab a table, have a browse of the menu.

Love the coffee at Go Bang. I always make sure I go there for my morning coffee on the weekends.
Great atmosphere, staff are awesome and the coffee is the best.
Thanks team for always making my weekends just that little more better.

Amazing food just a shame you can't change some stuff in your order. For example I don't eat black pudding and I couldn't swap it for anything else like you can at most places.

Go bang sits close to a couple of good cafes and really it's a matter of taste which you prefer. GB is retro, with eclectic spaces and seating, cosy when it's cold - nice layout, very friendly staff. Counter food is good and generally healthy, kitchen prepared plates are also good - nicely cooked eggs. Coffee is Ripe - in fact gb is the original home, but now with new owners - and usually very well prepared. Not too noisy, kid friendly with toys at back under an exposed brick chimney with a green lady on velvet- presumably it's been strengthened(?). Can sit and read the papers by the window, at back secreted away, or outside next to the traffic.
Good little cafe- recommended.

I like this cafe. It has a charm all it's own. The food is good, at least that which I have tried. To my mind the porridge, with moscovado sugar, banana and golden raisins tastes good and at $12 is good value compared to elsewhere. I like the long black as well. Friends tell me other food is good also.

Go Bang Espresso Cafe offers a very good choice for lunch. The service and quality of food is commendable.

I ordered the Vege Roast, which for $20 is a great deal. The portion/serving size is very generous and will leave you feeling very full indeed.
My request to add bacon to the dish was adhered to, and staff were all too happy to do so.

The quality of the coffee, however, is average. My ristretto long-black was made as an ordinary long-black, with barely any crema. Coffee residue and particulates were also found at the bottom of my cup, which was probably caused by not regularly back-flushing the group-heads. The taste of the coffee was still good, nonetheless.
My second beverage - this time an iced-coffee - was made to a good standard. The balance of sweetness, coffee, syrup and milk was done well. It is a very rare thing for me to have a milk-based espresso beverage (as an espresso connoisseur), so this was a nice treat.

The service was generally great, with our meals being served within 20 minutes. This was impressive, seeing as how busy the establishment was, and the relative complexity of our orders.

While I generally add a heavy weighting to the quality of the coffee in my evaluations, the superb food and great service lifted the establishment up to 4 stars.

In order to gain a 5 star rating, the coffee quality would have to improve, and the ambiance/environment reviewed. Changing the volume of music would be a start, since it can be highly intrusive to a good conversation in the cafe.

All in all, a pleasant experience which I would be happy to repeat!

Fantastic eggs on 5-grain bread. The coffee was delicious. The staff were friendly and provided great service. An excellent post-run breakfast!

Note - I have rated this 4 stars but wanted to give it 5, however the website is giving me an error (too few characters). Not much more to be said!

I love going to Go Bang! Their muesli and coffee is a great way to start the day. :-)

This used to be a good place to eat and have a great coffee. Last time I went there I had a tug of war with the waitress with my cup so I could finish my coffee. She also removed my unfinished cake and my husbands also. No were not there for long. Most uncomfortable when you have to worry that staff will be so unbelievably bad.
There is a great choice in Petone. Surely there are better staff out there?
Olivia Atkinson
Really expensive and small portions!! But the food is ok but expensive for what it is.

I have been here many times before but not in the past year or so.When i did come before the place was renovated the staff were fab everything worked well like clock work. This time not so good I didn't enjoy the service at all. There was a lady with Red hair there yelling at her staff when she could of done what was needed as the other staff were so flat out.Great coffee But really need to attend to staff about what they say in front of a packed out cafe.

A great cafe. This place has a good vibe, the coffee is always good, staff efficient and the food fresh and varied.

Great kid selection with reasonable prices, toy box needs a good scrub and an update.

Toilets always clean.

This is my first port of call for coffee when in Petone. They are ticking a lot of boxes.

This cafe can get quite busy and it's a good sign they must be doing something right. The coffee is done well and they include 2 marshmallows and a mini chockie fish with the hot chocolate.

Pretty average really

It used to be that the only thing that went bang in Petone was the sound of shopping bags clattering to the pavement as the unfortunate inhabitants keeled over from the combined fumes of the meatworks and the chemical factory. So what a miracle it is to see the Petone of today. Trendy cafés, cute wee boutiques, nary a factory worker in sight. One moment's silence for the death of NZ industry, before we slaver over the rise of the service industry, in this case Go Bang! This is a good café set amongst quite a few good cafés, but distinguished by a slightly more innovative and varied menu, the fact that it always seems to be possible to find a seat amongst the many nooks and crannies, and the ever lovely staff. Recommended :)
