Review Gr8 Tandoori - Lower Hutt

Indeera Upadhayay
This is one of my favourite places when I want to eat Indian food due to its authenticity. Yesterday went there with my Kiwi folks and was a little bit concerned about the spices. The food was lovely and my folks loved it. The team was very professional and service was good. Thank you and keep up the great work!

The fantastic food and really friendly staff have made me a regular here for over a year! I'd usually like to try different meals, but the one's I've had have been so delicious that it's a struggle to have something other than them! Highly recommend this restaurant.

My family and I have been here dozens of times since it opened and have never been disappointed in the slightest. The food is incredible, and everyone we've recommended it to has raved as well. Absolutely the best restaurant in the Hutt, with excellent service staff as well!

Great food. Good service. Good value! Even the take-outs are amazingly well presented. Friendly staff. Great location.

Gr8 Tandoori I'm not so sure... Good Tandoori probably yes. Conveniently delivered in Lower Hutt for $12 extra within about 45min. Butter Chicken (medium heat) was nice and creamy but too sweet for my liking. Other members of our group enjoyed a Chicken Madras and a pea-heavy Vegan style dish.

Was introduced to this hidden gem by a friend. Absolutely fantastic service, the best food and reasonably priced. Clean restaurant and toilet. No booking was required. Highly recommend.

One of the best in Wellington, food and service are so good, making it my family’s the go to place for celebrating a special day or just have a satisfying meal in general, highly recommend!

We had a large group at Gr8 Tandoori for dinner. Pradeep was looking after us and gave excellent service. He was attentive, respectful, patience, and super accommodating as we had to add extra chairs. The food was tasty and the atmosphere pleasant. We had a great time and would highly recommend Gr8 Tandoori for your next meal out!

This is my fourth time coming here. The food is phenomenal. The flavours are amazing. One of the greater Indian restaurants around. Food is consistent always great meals even with big groups of people. Will be coming back time and again.

I had the chicken Tikka masala takeaway. Delicious chunky bits of chicken. Great flavour, not too heavy. Medium spice has definitely got a kick to it so it's great if you have a blocked nose 😂. The naan was soft and light with heaps of garlic butter. Best I've had in a little while. Also great that they are open on Mondays coz not much else is and this place is worth it.

For our Saturday lunch, me and pops ventured out to Lower Hutt for some errands and visited Gr8 Tandoori. They are an Indian 🇮🇳 restaurant serving a variety of starters, biriyanis, and vegetarian + non-vegetarian curries.

Paneer Pakora 🧀 $12
Firstly, we got good portions for what you paid for. Decent presentation and were glad that the Pakoras were not oily/greasy. Unfortunately, we felt that the dish did not have enough seasoning. Even with the coconut chutney + spinach leaves, I wished there was a bit more salt🧂or spice 🌶 added to the filling. Also, I would like the Pakora batter to be less dry and give more crunch when biting into it.

Kakori Kebab 🍢🐑 $16
Overall, both of us liked the dish. The portion size was just right and was not a heavy dish that we could enjoy before our main. The minced lamb was soft and cooked well. Again, it would be good to get a bit more seasoning in the lamb so that we can really taste the "ginger garlic and spices".

Chicken Saagwala + Kastoori 🐓🥘 $13
This is definitely the highlight of our meal. Firstly, a great serving of chicken breast was in each of the curries. We were glad to reduce the chilli/spicy level. That way, it makes it easy to taste the other unique flavours in each curry🍛 such as the spinach/cream (Saagwala) and then the Methi/onion/gravy (Kastoori).

We also liked the garlic naan a lot. Had the right amount of thickness, was cooked just right without being raw/overburnt and you can really taste the garlic in each bite.

Final Words
Overall, we had a good experience at Gr8 Tandoori and would recommend to anyone wanting to try out a new Indian restaurant. Despite some letdowns in the starters, the service was friendly to talk to and were hospitable to our needs.

Personally, to get the best experience, I would skip the starters and go straight into the mains. Maybe get a couple of mates for a takeaway or dine-in and mix it up with the naans or curries.

The service was on point and the food stunning, even though it lacked spice. We had mango lassis, butter chicken, mango chicken, a lamb dish, kabuli & garlic cheese naans, rice, and mango chutney. I think next time we will have the curries as medium heat. I'd like to go back and try things I don't usually have. When I feel like Indian food, this will be my go to place.

Their website takes your money, yet they don't receive your order. You won't get a curry and have to wait a few days to get your money back. Don't waste your time like we have

Taken 2 hours to deliver food to an address 5mins from the restaurant.
Wow they certainly don't give priority to deliveries even though we pay extra!!
Last time ordering from this place.
Food is average!
Prices gone up significantly!

This our go to place when we feel like having good indian food. This restaurant is one of the best in Wellington and Lower Hutt. Manager and chef are very courteous and the front staff is very friendly and always welcomes with a smile. If you need a good india food this is your place to be.
The Hungry Glutton
Excellent Food and Excellent Service both for in house and while catering for private functions. Well mannered staff and you can even view your food being made.

Fantastic food and good service. It was easy to ask for more rice and water, as needed, and the curries were delicious. We went on a Tuesday evening and it was quiet.

One of the better Indian restaurants in Lower Hutt. Great lunch specials and good service! Would recommend the Tandoori Chicken with mint chutney.

The best Indian food in Wellington! I go to other Indian restaurants- but nothing so far has beat this place. Amazing flavours and service. Definitely will be going back. If you haven’t tried already- this place won’t disappoint!

I have eaten here a number of times, because I find their vegetarian briyani most delicious, however, their naan bread is not the best I've tasted.

Although I can recommend most dishes, I am non-the less very disappointed that they don't offer a beef option, which makes them less than a complete curry restaurant in my view. I feel a bit cheated.

Absolutely DELICIOUS! I have no idea why I didn't find this place earlier. Me and my partner were amazed by the taste of the dishes we ordered & how cheap it was!! $10.50 Lunch special, Any Main Curry served with Naan & Rice. Me and my partner also ordered the Onion Bhaji and it was to die for. Very filling too! The best we've tried. Not to mention the polite staff!! A+++ they made us feel comfortable & even gave us an extra chair to sit our baby down with his carseat. Thinking of making this a weekly thing as we love our curries!!! 5 stars!!

Just go there. Good is great in taste, temp, presentation and portion sizes. Service is very good although the cold draft through the front door is a deterrent.

Ordered a curry. All of my mates tasted it was so bad. Had it replaced they just fixed the original curry. Won't go back. Not recommended. Going down hill.

I had tried various Indian restaurants in Auckland but was surprised with Gr8 Tandoori during my trip to Wellington.
Taste was so authentic and amazingly prepared, that I can visit Wellington again just to eat here.
A must visit and highly recommend.

This is me and my husbands new favourite restaurant ! I just had the butter chicken and garlic naan delivered to me. I absolutely loved it! Was very satisfying. It was delicious and still hot when it arrived and it was real cheap to deliver since I live quite a while away. I have ordered from this place 3 times before and me and my husband have never been disappointed. We use to go to chill masala but ( was disappointed with there butter chicken the 2nd time I had) now we come here. Defenintly recommend this place. Thanks gr8 tandoori will be back.

Aaaaamazing Indian food. Butter chicken to die for - such depth of flavour. Authentic tasting food from a great menu. Huge naan bread, friendly staff. Only gripe would be limited alcohol menu - advertised beers and wines not available - drinks list needs changing
Octagon Pie
Aaaaaaamazing food, aaaamazing value! Went here for lunch and got top quality lamp Saagwala and a delicious naan for only $10.50!! My new favourite Indian Restaurant in the Hutt Valley.

Have also tried Butter Chicken since then, also amazing!
Goblin
Lovely waiters! The food is consistently good. Only problem is that the samosas are sometimes still cool in the middle. The lamb starters are very expensive but the curries are tasty.

Hands down best Indian restaurant in Lower Hutt. Excellent service when eating in and they also offer takeout. I have tried many entrees and mains from the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The onion bhaji is recommended, a huge plate that could feed five as an entree for only $6 and it's absolutely moreish. Delicious curries, no skimping on the meat either! And it's all top notch quality. My picks include Kadai Chicken, Malai Kofta, and Lamb Saagwala. Love the mango lassi to drink, give it a try if you have never had one. They also do a lunch special and frequently have a voucher in the Hutt News for a dinner for two at an outrageously good price. Ditch your usual, this is THE place for Indian food in the Hutt.

An early Sunday dinner and three tables quickly doubled in number while we were dining. We were warmly greeted on arrival and quickly seated. It seemed that just one menu is provided for each table so luckily there was a spare one nearby. We ordered a shared starter of lamb boti kebab, diced pieces of grilled marinated lamb. It arrived after a 25 minute wait. The flavours were delicious but the lamb was tough to chew. 20 minutes later, our main courses arrived: a creamy chicken chetinand and a goat curry with basmati rice. Again, the flavours were lovely but half of the goat curry was actually bone and gristle - disappointing as I was really looking forward to this dish. We finished our meal by soaking up the curry sauces with garlic naan. Although the waiting service was pleasant, it seemed like a very long wait before our first course when the restaurant was not yet busy.

Tried this place out for the first time as a change from our usual curry place and was pleasantly surprised. Yummy curries, lots of meat in them & really good pricing. Friendly staff, great Cook!! Think we will make this our new regular curry house. Restaurant nicely laid out, takeaway service great too.

I have been here quite a few times for lunch and once for dinner. The meals are always very filling and delicious. The naan is beautiful. The staff are very friendly and catering. Lunch prices are very good; you can get a soft drink and curry for under $13. A large range of curries too! Highly recommended!

We arrived and we're quickly seated and given menus. We ordered samosas to start. They were delicious and huge. They almost filled us up. The Currys we ordered were tasty with a good amount of rice.
We had gone on a weeknight so there was only a couple of others there but during the evening there seemed to be lots of people popping in for takeways.

Love this place! I'm a regular here for lunch and have tried probably 70% of the lunch menu.

Always fantastic! Great service, food is always top quality and very fresh. Best naan bread I've ever had and every curry I have tried has been packed with flavour and well presented. Couldn't recommend this resturant more! The chefs even walked me through the kitchen once and showed me how they made the curries with fresh spices and the naan in the tandoor. Very impressive.

Fantastic option for lunch in Lower Hutt. Only $10 for the best curry you'll get anywhere. Love it and I always tell people to come here.

Not giving 5/5 yet as I need to try a few more things!

Today my little family went to a new Indian restaurant in Lower Hutt and I am pleased to announce, we loved it. It was delicious and full of fresh spices. It is in a funny little spot and well worth finding. If you come out of the mall at that crossing where you can cross all the ways, walk in front of Cash Converters and go left in the little parking lot. It is next to the Cheesecake Shop.

When we walked in it looked fantastic and smelt wonderful. The decor is modern Indian and lovely. The seating is tables and booths and the kitchen open to view. Our visit was for Sunday lunch as they have a special lunch menu and we love our Indian lunches. They are good value and include rice and plain naan bread for around $10. You can upgrade your plain naan for a $1 and add a soft drink for the same amount.

This time we went straight for the main but on our next visit we will certainly try some starters. Miss Muffin was very Kiwi and ordered a Butter Chicken (mild) with a plain naan, Mr M had the Chicken Balti (Indian hot) with a plain naan and I used the opportunity to eat some cauliflower and had Aloo Gobi with a garlic naan. The portion sizes were large and the serving bait dish was stacked full of food, the portion of rice was also a very good size and the naan were big and very fresh.

We all enjoyed our food. Miss Muffin finished most of her meal in record time. Mr Muffin liked the heat of his curry and the fact that the naan was not dripping in oil or butter. I loved the freshness of my cauliflower and potato and the taste of cumin. This was a very successful lunch stop and we will be back. We often struggle to find somewhere we want to eat in the Hutt at lunch time, problem solved. I think we will soon be going in the evening to meet friends who love their Indian food too.

We decided on Indian takeaways and though we would visit Gr8 Tandoori in Lower Hutt.

These chaps have it “In the Bag”. Wow – walked through the front door and was greeted with a smile and a handshake from the owner DJ. Ordered 6 curries and enjoyed a cold Kingfisher and a few complimentary Poppadoms whilst I waited.

With a full restaurant, I was able to view all the “goings on” in the kitchen as they have set up the restaurant this was as not to hide anything behind closed doors. You can see they are all definitely proud of their business and the food they serve.

In a “Nut Shell” Gr8 Tandoori has definitely placed their mark on the Wellington food circuit. The quality of the food, the taste, flavour, excellent service. We enjoyed all the curries and especially the Chefs Special and the Lamb Vindaloo. Well done to the Chefs and management.
