Review Mid Valley Malaysian - Lower Hutt

Gardener Greenfingers
Delicious. We had 6 starters between the two of us and they we truly yum. The whole menu looked great and I cant wait to go back and try more. The waitress was very friendly and efficient was just an all round good experience and I'm glad to be over full. Good job.

Brilliant place for a great value dinner. Quick service and terrific food. Definitely be back.

Loved the food! Staff were friendly. When back in the area, I will be eating here again

The food is always great, friendly staff and a chilled out dinner experience. Great for couples, friends catch ups and often see families with younger kids as well. Really reasonable prices. They also do good takeaways.

amazing service and delicious food. Well done!

Whether you come here for the food or the service, you are making the right choice. The staff make you feel at home and the variety of the dishes is surpassed only by their quality. Craving something different, I ordered an Acar, pictured here with their Stir Fry Vegetable & Tofu in Oyster Sauce. In short: Spicy, Zesty, Crunchy, Beautiful. What they've managed to create with simple ingredients is astounding. Admittedly it may be a bit strong for some but if you're after an entrée with a bit of kick, you'll love this. Rest assured, the Tofu was also magnificent.

A nice place for a bit of authentic Malaysian cuisine. The menu has all the favourites and a few different items that are with trying. Food was a little slow in coming out but they were very apologetic about that. They only do dishes in medium or hot spice levels. Bar is well stocked and has an extensive range of spirits. Got a few main beers including Tiger and wine selection is limited. Overall it is a great cozy place for a dinner out. Background music needs modernisation and doesn't add to the restaurants authenticity.

The food here is delicious. I can't fault the gow chees and the red chicken and potato curry.
Teresa G
The Char Kwa Teow combination was delicious and the gow cheese were superb.
Julz YE
Authentic delicious laksa, with plenty of chicken, tofu, and coconut curry. CKT, rendang pics not captured, but equally delicious
John Cheva
The food was okay. Was busy when I visited on a Sunday evening.

I asked for hot, and boy golly it was hot.

The Dim Sums at Mid Valley Malaysian are truly deserving of the title: Specialty. They are one in a series of small delectable delights exclusive to the establishment that I'd urge anyone to try!

We love this place.<br/>Nearly always we choose the star dish, which is Hainanese Chicken and Pork.<br/>Always delicious, with the star anise sauce.<br/>And good value too.<br/>Nice relaxing atmosphere and lighting.<br/>Cynthia, the manager, is always friendly.<br/>A consistent favourite.

Went there for dinner last week and ordered spring rolls, sweet & sour fish, and affogato for dessert. It was not crowded and only a few tables were occupied when I arrived; the young staff was really nice although later on, she seemed to be the only one waiting on the tables even after more people came in. The food was unremarkable -- spring rolls (2 small ones -- much smaller than other restaurants) did not even have that much fillings, and came with a very tiny serving of sauce. On the other hand, the sweet & sour fish and rice was totally covered with sauce -- too generous actually, which ruined the flavour of the fish. The place was clean but did not have an appealing ambiance.

Some of the best food in lower hutt. I love the rice noodle dishes and also very friendly and top notch service. Also they are very willing to make small changes to their menu to suit. I'm quite partial to the BBQ pork Kwa Teow.
Nadine Hewitt
Love this place! Food is always consistently great, and one plate of the Mee Goreng along with a couple of starters easily feeds 2x of us, making it a nice cheap date night. Add an extra starter or 2 and we can even feed the 10 year old piggie too! The only reason my rating isn’t a 5 is that when it gets busy, being a BYO, it can get REALLY noisy in there, so if you go on a Friday/ Saturday night expect it to be hard to hear each other!
Nature's Kid
Good food , calm even on a Saturday evening , decent ambience and very friendly staff. <br/><br/>Chicken kua teow was excellent , cooked with proper amount of sauces topped with green onions . Fried rice and the other chicken dish which was saucy and served with rice was also exuberant. Definitely pocket friendly for a good eater.
Thomas Cooley
Good tasting food, great big portions and really reasonable prices. Has become a go to place for me and my friends.<br/>Interior is tidy and has a fish tank.<br/>Service is very friendly and professional.<br/>Would highly recommend.

The best Mee go reng ever! We order at least once every couple of months. Food is always delicious and generous! We end up with dinner and lunch!
Hayley Osborne
Really nice staff! <br/>Food is yummie!!! Chicken fried rice is super yummie and so is the roti chanai.<br/>Good size servings for your money.<br/>Fast and clean

Love eat here and for takeaway the food is great, we have takeaway from here every Thursday night. We discover this place by change and it's been the best food discovery ever.
Christina Gillmore
By far one of the best places to eat in Lower Hutt. Been there twice and both times was very satisfied. Its worth trying them out, you won't be let down.
Tim Nesdale
Wow. This place is fantastic. We had gees, Tom yum, beef randang and green chicken curry. We got takeaway it only took 15 minutes. We ate it about 45 mins later and it was still exquisite. We couldn't decide which dish was better they kept getting better the more you tried! Will definitely go back, top marks!

We have been to mid valley a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night for the first time. I was happy with my meal however my husband's meal was apparently not great. I have never done reviews for a restaurant but I felt the need this time due to the poor service we have received by one of the staff members. The girl who served us was great but there was another lady bossing her around. It was only just after 9pm and we were the last customers left. This particular lady appeared to be rushing things and even turned half the lights off. I felt this was indicating us to leave soon and we haven't finished our meals. We were actually going to order another round of drinks but obviously didn't and decided to leave. When asked if we can take our leftover meals in a takeaway container, the girl who was helping us was politely taking our plates to the kitchen. However this other lady pretty much yelled and said " No Rebecca just give them a takeaway container and they can fill them up". I felt very insulted at her rude behaviour and will never return again and will pass it on to our friends as well!
Nicole
Great food and atmosphere, has always been a favourite of mine. Have been with friends/family multiple times (including last night), always exceeded our expectations! Great value for money, and awesome staff
Jack
Not the best experience nor the worst I've had - still deciding if i like this place or not. We came here a couple weeks back, after putting it off for awhile due to the outside and inside decor. Food was good but portion wise was slightly small. There is a broad range of menu options which is pretty good. Food came out pretty promptly but, that was probably because there wasn't many people dining in. We ordered some dumplings, which could have had more filling but the flavors was on point.
Rosie
Doesn't look the sharpest place from the outside, but the food was really good. We had some chicken soup and dumplings for an appetizer and they were amazing. We got a decent portion size of each especially considering they were appetizers. Staff are really friendly and make you feel very welcomed
Jeff
Highly Recommended<br/><br/>Great selection of delicious meals. <br/>Big sized meals, and good value for money.<br/>Excellent friendly service. <br/>Nice atmosphere.<br/>Dining in or getting takeaways from here is equally as good.<br/>Will definitely be back again.

Just got takeouts from here for dinner. Ordered pork & cabbage dumplings which were great. My partner ordered beef rendang - it was amazing! I ordered the green chicken curry. It was good but not as good as the rendang. Will be getting that next time. Friendly service & food was ready very quickly.

Wife and I decided to have Mid Valley takeaway for dinner, so I called in advance on my way home from work at 6:45pm so that by the time I got to the restaurant my order would be ready and waiting. I arrived at the restaurant at 7:10pm to collect my order that I was told would be ready for pick up at 7:15pm. I paid for our meals, the lady behind the counter then asked me to take a seat while she went to see how far away our order would be. On her return she said that our order would be another 10 minutes which I was okay with. 25 minutes ticked by and I started getting quite frustrated and impatient to which I realised during that time, the restaurant was maybe half full and this got me thinking that my order had not even began to be cooked until I arrived at the restaurant! Our order was finally ready at 7:40pm; I was not impressed at all. If I had known our order would have taken this long I would have opted to go somewhere else. Once I got home with our order my wife realised that the rendang that she ordered had potatoes in it that I specifically asked to be removed and the lady behind the counter had confirmed this to me over the phone. The cheese wontons we also ordered were stuck together in 2 clumps of three as if they had been frozen together and not separated before going in to the deep frier. My wife and I have been here many times before and have been satisfied with the value for money. But the last 2-3 times we have been the service has been below average and when we dined in we felt very rushed and pressured to place our orders. It is a real shame as we do enjoy the food, but I think there needs to be improvements on customer service and time management as I feel it has gone downhill from past dining experiences.

Hi Mid Valley, <br/><br/>I ordered Nasi Goreng mild. However when I received my order I got very hot. <br/><br/>I rang the restaurant and spoke to the owner. Her response was we are not going to replace your order. The order you received was mild. You can just have a refund .You then hung up the phone. <br/><br/>How can you call that customer service? , I was not very happy . As you have made the same mistake three times!!<br/><br/>When you are confronted about your service. You got moody rather then actually solve the problem. As a owner you should lead by example not your staff. <br/><br/>Maybe there needs to be some more training within your restaurant. <br/><br/>Your customer service skills needs to sharpen up , as a owner you should be ashamed. Your own workers were kind enough to actually say we are sorry for the lack of service from our boss. You clearly have great workers who could see your wrongs. <br/><br/>I would like to thank your front of house staff for great service.

Me and my partner come here all the time, we were experimenting with food for a bit and this restaurant is defiantly the winner, really affordable!

We've looked through the window a number of times but haven't been inspired to go until tonight - while trying to find another Thai restaurant we decided to just go here. Oddly, we were presented with water and menus but were, at no point, asked if we wanted drinks. The decor could do with a bit of refreshing - it was nice but is looking a bit tired. The poor fish in the tank had nothing to keep them occupied (no plants, stones, or ornaments) - I noticed this because the fish were so gorgeous. We started with the roti & chicken curry and cheese & bacon spring rolls. Very bog-standard but enjoyable - hubby raved about his rolls and wished he'd had double. Mains were the spring onion beef and sweet & sour prawns. The prawns were awesome - unctuous and succulent - the sauce a bit pungent but not served with the usual cauliflower filler. Hubby liked his aromatic dish quite a lot. For me, I probably wouldn't go back unless I had a craving for fat prawns, but the hubby is keen to return. Friendly staff & reasonable prices.<br/><br/>Here's what the hubby thought:<br/><br/>"This has been one of those 'we should try that one day' places for a long time.<br/> Expectations weren't huge, but the prices were good so I figured a place that's still around for some time must be doing something right. I ordered chicken, bacon and cheese spring rolls (2) for starters, the missus did a roti and chicken curry gravy. Mains were a beef, ginger and spring onions for me, and sweet & sour prawns for her, both came with rice.<br/> Her roti and gravy seemed ok. It's not a complex dish and we got what we ordered. My spring rolls were presented as two spring rolls on a plate. Nothing added to try and make it seem more than it was, but they were excellent. My only regret was I didn't order ten. They tasted home-made and belied their appearance of something nasty from a supermarket.<br/>  My main was also very good. All the flavours were there and for the $14.50 cost was very good value. The wife enjoyed her prawns, though the rest of the dish looked very ordinary. Both of us had rice which came out the way I cook rice. Which I why I don't. Expectations of 'light and fluffy' didn't happen. I'd go back again, the missus ain't so sure."

Great food. .. pretty spicy for those that order medium. Takeaway is what we usually go for and its very nice .. Not much atmosphere for the dine in tho.

Best Malaysian food! Been eating here for over 10 years with family and friends, always a great experience, the food is excellent and great price recommend all their dishes!

Fantastic food and great service! We love the chicken Mee goreng!  We are now meet up regularly for girls nights out meals just before chicks at the flicks!

Have been going to Mid Valley for years now. The food is always amazing , I have tried most things on the menu now but my go to order is always the dumplings and the red chicken curry ! The staff always remember me and more often than not remember my order so its nice to know they are paying attention to there customers ! Will continue to be a loyal customer here! I have not found an asian/ Malaysian restaurant in Lower Hutt that comes close to Mid Valley. Highly recommend you try it !

Okay service, but the food was delicious, prices cheap and portion is a lot even bigger. Will definitely come back again. Haninese chicken is always my favourite dish. Need to try something different when im there again.
Amanda
Really impressed, good service and great food for a very reasonable price.<br/>I had a delicious nasi goreng and my husband - who is on a low-carb diet - had a delicious satay chicken. <br/>We're going back this week and taking friends with us. Mains ranged from $13 - $16 and I had to take half of mine home as I couldn't finish it.

Was guttered when Sungai Wang restaurant closed, didn't know they merged otherwise would have come to this restaurant earlier. A better space - much bigger. Nice atmosphere. Went here for the first time on Friday. Nice setting, fast and friendly staff and service, the food was delish. Have found a new favourite and will continue to come here. Great value for money. Highly recommend.

We have been going to Mid Valley since we moved to the Hutt four years ago. In all that time we have not had a bad meal and I consider the consistency excellent. <br/><br/>We have tried most of the menu at one time or another and while there are dishes we don't like so much all of them are made to a high standard. <br/><br/>We really like the atmosphere although we try to go at less busy times. Stand outs for us include the Mee Goreng, Kung Pau Chicken, Rendangs, Laksa and the Tom Yum soup.<br/><br/>Marvellous
Fiona O'Brien
I have been going to Sungai Wang restaurant for many years and it's always been great food for a great price. Since Sungai has merged into Mid Valley I have been five times and every time it has got worse and worse. Often I go with family including small children and so do other families and still, even though there are often several families with little children that frequent the establishment at one time, they haven't invested in another high chair. The high chair tonight was booked and instead of letting our little one use it until the other family arrived, our little one wasn't allowed and actually ended up falling and hitting her head. I ordered the lemon chicken which was very dry and the sauce was thin and pretty much non existent. When I went to pay I used an Entertainment Book coupon -Buy one main meal and get one free. The meal they gave us free was the child's meal even though we purchased two adults meals as well. This isn't right and while not actually that many dollars different, not really the point!. Sorry Mid Valley, you have lost a long term customer in me!

I went to this restaurant because of the good reviews I read. Having been to Malaysia and cook that type of food often I know the balances of flavours and textures of dishes well. I was very disappointed in the food. Atmosphere was okay, service fine, portion sizes very large. But the food was not really Malaysian in my mind. I ordered an entree of pork parcels that had been deep fried. I needed a lot of sauce because they were tasteless and they were not crispy. Perhaps the had been sitting under a heat lamp or something but they should have been crispy. For main I ordered a crispy pork in pepper sauce. The pork was very chewy and the sauce was full of pepper - just a mouthful of pepper with each taste even though I had asked for it medium, (and I can eat hot) it was ridiculously hot. I tried to scrape away a lot of the pepper to taste the sauce - but the sauce had no taste - it was like cornflour and water with a browning agent in it. They got our food out really quick but then we had to sit with our dirty dishes in front of us for nearly an hour when I finally asked them to clear the table. This was the worst Malaysian food I have ever tasted and if people think it is really good then they need to eat out more. I won't go back and waste my money. They are far better Asian options in Lower Hutt
Christopher
Fabulous food, staff and atmosphere. We have our favourite dishes we can't go past. Owner operator goes that extra mile to please. This is our regular dine in restaurant as is affordable along with generous meal sizes.
Sharon Edwards
My husband and I went there for dinner one week ago. For some reason we just have time to write some reviews. <br/><br/>Mid Valley is my regular restaurant in Lower Hutt. Their food is always amazing. And good service as well. We always order dumpling and roti chicken as our entrees. Nasi goreng and hot spicy chicken as our mains. We've never been disappointed. We will definitely come back again and again.

First time went to this restaurant last weekend. Food were excellent as well as service. We will definitely come back.
Octagon Pie
I ordered the Cha Kwa Teow with no beansproats. The meals took a long time to be brought out and when mine arrived they had left out the cabbage?? The meal I felt was quite oily, dry and a little flavourless. Was left wishing I had ordered the Hainanese Chicken and Pork

My friends &amp; I have dined at this restaurant many times than we can count, at least once or twice a month &amp; always go back for more. The service gets better each time we go. The food is always consistent, we always know what to expect. There are too many favourites to consider but my partner will always be a fan of the lamb curry. I have to agree with the lack of warmth but once you start eating this fabulous food you soon start to peel off your layers &amp; an added bonus of being a byo!! Recommend to all !! :)

A+++<br/><br/>The only place I can trust for an awesome food experience in Lower Hutt.
Kylie Miller
Yummy food, good amount of spice and not too long with the wait times. Usually we only go for takeaway. We did dine in once but not much atmosphere and pretty empty. Other than that the restaurant has great food and friendly staff.
Johann Go
Finally, an Asian restaurant that doesn't actually taste like something you could buy from your local takeaway shop!<br/>The food served is always hot, fresh and delicious. <br/>Staff are very helpful and the order was served fairly promptly (considering what we ordered).<br/><br/>Good timing between the entres and main meals.<br/>An overall good dining experience.
Gemma
First visit to this restaurant and was thoroughly impressed. Was quiet when we arrived and was full when we left. Food was excellent, entrees were cheap and tasty. Mains were also affordable and filling. Would definitely go again and recommended this restaurant.
Terri Nem
Fantastic food and great service. Remembered going there a while ago but was not as good- maybe under different management? Food was so delicious and the portion was generous!!!! Will definitely go back more often :)
Kristina Patterson
Great food always hot when receive it at table. Good price making it affordable to eat out more often.<br/>We have eaten here several times and food is always faultless.<br/>Great menu selection but you will probably find you get a couple of favourites and stick to those.<br/>Excellent idea to be able to book on line saves ringing later on when staff commence work.
Trish Oxenbridge
I just love the food at this restaurant. It is always fresh and delicious. My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary. The chicken and mushroom dumplings were every bit as fantastic as the pork and cabbage dumplings I have tried previously. Our mains were fantastic - try the Black Pepper Sauce Crispy Pork. Serving was huge and more than I would normally eat but couldn't bear to leave any as it was so good. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing and the service is friendly and courteous. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone. Great place for a quiet dinner or a family occasion. Compliments to all the staff. We will be back very soon
Jade Amber
The food was fantastic , exactly what i expected it to be ! My partner and I ordered 3 entrees to share- The pork dumplings, won tons, and chicken satay, all were cooked perfectly and were delicious!! We both had Red Chicken Curry as our main being fans of Mid Valleys old sister restaurant Sungai Wang which they are now merging with I was hoping it would be the same quality which is most definitely was!!<br/><br/>The staff were amazing aswel they anticipated my every need before I had to ask, the curry was quite hot and just when I was thinking I needed another drink the waiter was there with another jug of water.
Gail Howard
We visited the Mid Valley Malaysian Restaurant on a Saturday night but very early using an Entertainment Book coupon. The food was really lovely - try the prawn with sesame seeds - freshly cooked and very yummy. The entrees were as described and very tasty and the mains were delicious and more than adequate in size. Excellent service and very competitive prices. My husband also misplaced his wedding ring after washing his hands in the men's room. I rang later that evening and was phoned the next day to say that they had found it. We couldn't fault this restaurant and will visit again.
Lindy
We dined here early one Friday evening recently. It was one of the nicest Malaysian meals we have tasted. The menu had plenty of choice. The food was delicious and tasted very fresh, not reheated. Highly recommend the prawns and the satay. We took children with us (who are quick picky eaters) and they loved the food too. It caters very well to diners of all types. The only criticism would be as others have mentioned, the restaurant is a bit cold and a lit bit dim with the lighting but those are minor issues. We will definitely be back very soon.
Annette Hansen
Fantastic food, nice atmosphere, good service. We were very impressed with the range of dishes and the fresh clean flavours. Shows great flare and range of ideas in the Malaysian style. Would definitely go again and take a big table of friends with us. <br/>Only thing I would like to see changed is the presentation of the menus, they need to be jazzed up a little and presented in nice binders.<br/>Highly recommended...and I have worked as a chef for the past 22 years!<br/>Try the Brisket....delicious!
Susan Spencer
We visited this restaurant as a group of four on a cold Saturday night. Was very impressed with the meals and the service in this restaurant . Had read reviews that said it was cold, which nearly stopped us from going but we put onwarm clothes and had to take a layer off, did not find it at all cold. Will be sure to recommend this restaurant to friends and will be back. Great value for money<br/><br/><br/>28/8/13 We have visited this restaurant several times in the last15 months, it never fails to impress us. The most recent was this evening when it was very busy but they still found us a table and the food and service was up to its usual standard.

Had the pleasure of dining at the Mid Valley Malaysian Restaurant and enjoyed it all. Great selection on the menu, nice food which was dished up nice and hot, great service from the staff who were very friendly and restaurant decor is great. Would of scored 5 if restaurant a little bit warmer. <br/>We will definitely be revisiting.<br/>Well done
Caffeinated Weka
At first appearance, there is little to distinguish Mid Valley as an excellent Malaysian restaurant. However, the food and service speak for themselves. The decor is modern and warm and the service is both friendly and efficient. We shared bacon spring rolls to start, then had mee hoon goreng (with rice stick noodles) and beef in a Thai style sauce for our main course. The mee hoon goreng had a satisfactory bite to it and the portion size was huge. The beef came in a spicy sauce with diced apple, pineapple, tomato, cucumber and sesame - very sweet and a good match with roti. All mains on the menu look to be excellent value. We will definitely be back.
Penelope
Amazing...best Malaysian in Wellington!! Staff are always friendly, food is great and the decor is fantastic. Definitely try the beef rendang. Have taken lots of friends here who don't normally eat malaysian, but due to the decor they are easily swayed..and i am yet to hear anything negative.<br/><br/>Highly recommend :)

My family and I went to the Mid Valley Malaysian for my husband's birthday in July. Although the food was very good, the restaurant was absolutely freezing. The family had the other table left their coats, hats and gloves on during their meal!!!! and we couldn't wait to leave because it was so cold. Pity as the food was good
Donna
