Famous Nanjing Food. Chef, Mr. Yang originally from Jinlin Restaurant (the most famous restaurant in Nanjing, China).

The outside doesn't look much. It's a dated, unlikely place for a good meal. However, the $40 set menu we had with our party of eight was excellent. Great service. Great food. Recommend. I'd eat here again.

Very happy with our meals, all food was delicious! Only issue was the Orange beef needed much more orange flavour, if you perfect the orange beef I can guarantee my husband will have you on speed dial :-)

I'm ethnically Chinese, and lived in Shanghai for 8 years. This place makes food like typical family-style eateries in Shanghai. This is where I go to get an authentic taste of China in Wellington.

Me and my family have been here about 6 times for a banquet meal. Very tasty and good prices too.

Genuine Chinese food that's got beautiful flavours and ingredients. Love the steamed pork and chive dumplings!

I went to Top Jade Restaurant last night (10/9, Sunday) with my friend. Food was amazing. However, the service was most unwelcoming. The manner of the staff was rude. He had no patience and showed attitude while serving food. He was apparently the manager last night. As we went to pay the bill, we asked him if he was ok and told him that we felt uneasy with his attitude and behaviour. He just stared at us smiling and did not apologise. Anyways we have decided not to return to this restaurant anymore. 😐

My husband and I dined in last night and decided today we'll get our favorite dishes to takeaway. As I was plating up our food for dinner tonight I notices that there were ants in the sauce/oil of our spare ribs. Disgusted and sick to my stomach. What a let down. Check your food before you leave the shop😠😠😠I want a refund.

Arrived at top jade was quite busy full of noisy patrons. Waited more than half an hour before our order was taken. Then waited over an hour before our entrees arrived. To our pleasant surprise our first main arrived quite quickly might I add it was cold duck. By the time other mains arrived our duck felt like it came out of the fridge. Going back to the entrees, they were tasteless but accompanied by a watered down sweet n sour sauce (yummmm 😣). Our entrees were deep fried King prawns, scallops and spring rolls. Our mains were braised duck which came cold, prawns with cashews which was tasteless, and sizzling lamb which was quite good actually. <br/><br/>Service was poor, man was unapologetic for delays and also unfriendly. Will never go back. Worst dining experience of my life.

This is probably the best Chinese restaurant around the central Lower Hutt area.  Unfortunately that's not high praise.  <br/><br/>It's very much an "OK" place.  The food is OK, the service is OK, the decor is OK. <br/><br/>We get a take-away from here occasionally and although it's tasty enough, we wouldn't eat in the actual restaurant since a 20 minute drive into Wellington provides many better options.  But for a lazy evening meal when you can't be bothered too cook, this place is OK.

Took so long for food to arrive. Food didn't come out at the same time. Restaurant was extremely loud. Daughter almost fainted due to it being too loud. Food was okay but one dish came out in a baking tray. Lousy service. Disappointing.

Reasonably priced Chinese food that is not too westernised, sums up Top Jade. The menu covers a range of the more popular Chinese dishes with a few extra dishes to explore Chinese cuisine further. Portion sizes are large with simple flavours that usually do not overpower the dish.<br/><br/>Don't be put off by the dated decor as the food and service should not disappoint.   Though it would be nice if the owner did invest a little to update.

The food itself is pretty nice, the service however... not so much. It took a wee while before our food that we had ordered arrived onto our table, the restaurant didn't seem to be busy so we were unsure why there was a decent wait. Food came out, half being warm the other half just slightly warmer as if it was sitting there for awhile. the food itself had good flavors, very well seasoned but it did make me very thirsty (probably due to the heavy amount of MSG). Portion sizes were okay but in comparison to prices not so much.

The food was great but they really need to improve their service. It took 40 minutes to receive our meal, later tables were served before us and we had to follow up with staff as to where our meal had got to.

Absolutely disgusting. Just a week ago I ate at my favourite Chinese restaurant - Barilla Dumpling House. Unfortunately it's in Auckland, and I'm usually in Lower Hutt. Craving dumplings and Kung Pao Chicken, I decided to try Top Jade. $27 later (!!!!!!) and I've got a full rubbish bin and I'm hungry. The dumplings were chewy, flavourless and the meat was bright pink (???). The pitiful serving of Kung Pao Chicken was glutinous, grey, and chewy, and featured a few pieces of undercooked carrot and green capsicum. I just can't believe someone is selling this, and even worse - people are buying it. Seriously, steer clear. If you want dumplings, go down the road to Mid Valley Malaysian which are at least edible.

It was OK found it a bit smelly and expensive . Not a nice environment, service was quite good,. But wouldn't go back or recommend , they need to get better extractor fanns Ann

Top Jade has been there for years but for last one year since it has changed owners they have started serving new dishes and have completely changed the menu. Menu is bigger and better and restaurant is busier than before. I have tried many of their dishes and their fish dishes are particularly outstanding.<br/><br/>Today me and my wife, we had fish in pickled cabbage and deep fried chicken with chilies. They always use fresh fish sourced from local fish shops in Wellington as per the owner and mostly they use Blue Cod. This dish has got plenty of soup and the flavors are perfect combination of fresh ginger, garlic, Chinese pepper and coriander. Pickled cabbage adds acidity while pepper makes it slightly spicy and that is what you expect from a soup in Chinese restaurants. They also serve fish in chili oil one of my favorite which is spicier than what I had today and is not recommended for faint hearted . Generally their fish dishes comes in a big pot and portion is big enough to serve 3 to 4 people. <br/><br/>All these years I had the opportunity to visit most of the Chinese restaurants in Wellington as my wife is from China and based on my experience I will highly recommend this place. Excellent service and beautiful interiors.

We have eaten here a number of times and as always are thoroughly pleased with the taste, portion size and speed with which our meals are prepared.  When we want to dine out we choose Top Jade very often as we know exactly what to expect...perfection.  Thank you.

Was wondering around for some authentic Chinese food, and found this neat place upstairs. Must try their black bean beef and the roast chicken!!!<br/>Totally wasn't disappointed. Their service is very good and the dishes came fairly quickly shortly after we ordered. Would recommend others to come and try! Don't be fooled by the outdated exterior and the traditional decorations!

Went here for dinner in Nov. The owner said he had taken over quite recently. REALLY tasty food again now - and very generous portions. Very friendly staff &amp; a nice relaxed atmosphere. Still resonable prices too (~$17/main). We could recommend the sizzling platters. RECOMMENDED for a relaxed night out. Give it a try. Now open Tues - Sun.

We went there for dinner couple of weeks ago. It was a Friday night but not too many customers there. The entrees were nice but the main meals were average and too oily. Service was good. The waitress was quite friendly. We probably won't be back again.

I'm starting to wonder whether there is any difference at all between food you order at your local Chinese takeaway shop and food you order from a Chinese restaurant. <br/>Another average restaurant with nothing that really stands out. Food usually comes out at infrequent intervals and the service leaves something to be desired.<br/>Dishes and utensils are often in rather dirty condition.

We have been patrons of this restaurant for many years, ever since it opened, and have always found it excellent value, both in quality and quantity of food. So we felt confident we would get a good meal when we booked a party of 5 for new Year's Eve. Wrong!! Admittedly the restaurant was fuller than normal, but we were pointedly ignored by the normally attentive waitresses, and waited for well over half an hour to order our starters. But this was only the beginning of our troubles. The mains came out at infrequent intervals (why do Chinese restaurants do this? Do they only have one wok going at a time?) The result was that there was a 2-hour delay between the first main and the last, so most of the party had finished eating before mine arrived. Finally my rice arrived but was cold before there was any sign of my main dish arriving and I had to request hot rice. In the end I asked the waitress what was going on in the kitchen (by then all the other diners had gone and the restaurant was empty) and was told they were one chef short. We could have been told this when we arrived, and made some allowance for the unacceptable delays. The final straw was the size of my main when it arrived, which was about half the size of the other mains, more an entree size. Clearly they had run out of food by then. The staff were completely unapologetic about this fiasco and I will NEVER go back again, as there are plenty of equally good Chinese restaurants in the Hutt Valley.

We have dined here a few times and every single time it has been brilliant. The waitress is always very helpful and polite. We only had to wait about 15 mins and our meal was here. We always order the chicken and sweetcorn soup to start as its the most tasty soup I have tasted in years. Then we have a selection of sweet and sour pork to orange beef to garlic prawns (which are to die for) and lots of rice and share, so we can taste different things. And boy it is good. I was stuffed!<br/>So Top Jade, well done and keep up the good work, we'll definately be back again and again.

Went here for a work do and had a fantastic night. They brought out nibbles which we enjoyed nibbling. Had karaoke up the front which was a lot of fun and it was a great location.

Enjoyed our meal and dining experience here.<br/><br/>MUCH nicer on the inside that the outside (Granted its a little dated inside, but its very clean and tidy).<br/><br/>Meals were great and the service was fantastic, also very good value for the price.

Awesome place to go! We have had many celebrations here as well as quiet intimate evenings and we have always been impressed. Food is brilliant, they are BYO which keeps the cost down, service is friendly and personable, I highly recommend :-)

We come to this restaurant a lot, and have brought groups of friends, we always get great service and good food. We will keep coming back

A good experience overall. The waitress was attentive and pleasant, good sized portions. We had wantons and stuffed chicken wings for starters, sizzling beef and ginger as well as Schwinn pork as mains. Food was very well presented and delicious.<br/>Well done Top Jade, excellent value for money and a great dining experience.<br/>Liz O'Connor

Dined tonight, duty manageress was friendly and efficient. We were using a voucher so had a drink each, entrees and mains. The entrees were battered fish and barbequed pork. Both were warm and fairly tasteless. The mains were beef in black bean sauce which was average. The big disappointment was the braised duck and chinese vegetables. There were 6 very small bits of duck(mainly skin) sitting atop a large serving of vegetables. The decor of the restaurant is pleasant but I did notice a couple of dead flies and other things on the large window sill. Based on my experience I would not go back.

Went to this restaurant for the first time and probably will not be going back. There were four of us dining, we all had starters which were all brought out at different times, one had finished their starter before others had arrived. The BBQ pork was poor, sliced warm meat (like the meat from a deli) which was tough and chewy, the garlic king prawns were nice, and the stuffed mushrooms were average very oily from being deep fried. Our mains were brought out roughly at the same time (within 5 mins of each other). The sizzling beef satay and sizzling prawn satay were tasteless, the braised ribs were full of fat and gristle and hardly any meat, and finally the red chicken curry was average with minimal chicken. We did not stay for a dessert. The waitress was pleasant and the restaurant was clean and tidy, the food was a real let down.

Looks like a dive from the outside, but MUCH nicer inside. The service was friendly and attentative without being annoying, and the food was great. The combination fried rice needed a little more flavouring for the rice, but was good anyway, and the hot and sour chicken was outstanding!<br/>Am definitely going back!

Sad Sad Sad, dined here with my husband, bought a voucher online, thought we would treat ourselves to a night out, should have saved on the babysitter and not bothered, ordered what i was told more than once mixed meats and veges, stir fried and served in lettuce cups, meat veges, all good, not shrimp, i don't eat shrimp, had to pick them all out, not good, ordered duck and veges for a main, managed to fill my rice bowl with the skin and fat off this duck, veges were covered in fat, and found a piece of string still attached to my duck, when i asked the waitress about the string she was very blase and didn't seem bothered. This restaurant had a large group in, 4 big tables in total, very loud, and they placed us beside them....we wont be going back!!!!

Food is delicious. Good range of dishes. Friendly staff. Will be going back again. A bit of a hidden jewel in the Hutt.

Came here a few months ago. The service was ok. The meal was pretty good. I wouldn’t rave about it. It didn’t make us really want to go back over other places we've been. Good meals at good prices. Better than 3 stars, worse than 4. If I could give 3 and a half stars this would be its score. Went high based on other ratings.

We went to Top Jade looking for somewhere to have an early Friday night dinner. We were the first guests to arrive, but the restaurant quickly began to fill up, even on a cold and stormy night. We could see why; our meal was excellent. We started off sharing the san chow barl, featuring an assortment of finely chopped vegetables. Our mains of orange beef and hot and sour sesame chicken were very tasty and beautifully presented. Our service throughout the evening was excellent: polite, friendly and efficient. We will happily dine here again and highly recommend Top Jade as an excellent Chinese restaurant in Lower Hutt.

This place is a gem, I take my girlfriend there all the time. Its beautiful inside yet the place is hidden away, more people should go there! The food is fantastic, no overpricing to be seen- for food or even drink. Its great value and quality. Just try it!
