Review Cowboy Jack's - Lower Hutt

Went in with no high expectations for an early dinner with our 2.5yearold. The service was casual but warm and inviting. And the food was well priced and delicious! Not over flavoured, cooked perfectly and fresh. Definitely going to make this a regular Family Date Night place! Sad that there's luke warm reviews, ignore them and treat yourself to a good feed!

Love the food here, great specials too. Previously 4 star rating due to customer service but with the new management I'm going 5 stars! That's for great food, staff, atmosphere and deals. Great place for date night, family or friend events too.

A good selection of food both from cabinet and menu. Busy place but didn't have to wait too long. Prices reasonable. Food is very good. Service was fast and efficient. They're pretty busy, so don't have time to be chatty - but are all smiling and welcoming. I will 100% be back - thank you so much!!!!!!

No doubt has best BBQ ribs around the place, also the steaks used are silver firn and cooked gold specialy the mushroom and pepper sauce they have is amazing. Surely The place needs some work were decor is concernd but definitely a good place to go..

Staff are friendly and place isnt too bad. I had the ribs which i found average as, smothered in way too much sauce. Enjoyed the hot chips which was the highlight of the dish. Also they had the music up so loud it was hard to hear anyone at the table. Wouldnt recomend to anyone.

The food tasted like it had been cooked the day before and then reheated in the microwave. Poor service, and awkward atmosphere. Would not go there again.

I went out last Friday night for dinner with the families for our cousins birthday, we found it was a great spot for the family to hang out so casual, relaxing with friendly staff to enjoy our dinner at.
We thought the ribs were the highlight on the night it was cooked with perfection the marinated sauce was delicious. Our family couldn't get of it at the end of the night. I only have a tiny wee concern if may be have a little bit more of a variety on the salads this may see a class A standard :-) other than that all seem good.
Mark my word you will be seeing us sooner than you expect to try out your other dish.
PS. Keep those ribs rolling in for this family guys! Lol.
A satisfactory result overall from us if I may add. :-)

Caesar Salad was a solid 4.
The sirloin was a 3.
Nice place and environment.
The waitress was nice enough, but I thought that the size of the sodas was quite small. The fries also were not all that great.

After seeing the bad reviews here on Zomato, we almost didn't bother, but we were so glad we did! The environment inside is great, and the staff were excellent. Most importantly though, the food was second to none. With all the negative reviews in mind, I was expecting your typical pub grub.. Was I proven wrong! The food was one of the best meals I have ever had, decent sized and every part was cooked to perfection.

I'm not one to bother writing a review here, but this genuinely deserves it. Well done, team. We had a fantastic night!!

Food is NOT good - went there for dinner once before and was really disappointed but thought we'd try the brunch with this Groupon deal. I got the Big Breakfast and it was really dry - no butter on the toast, no sauces, poached eggs were overcooked, just really bland. My partner got the pancakes and we didn't know whether to laugh or complain - I could see into the kitchen from where we were sitting and saw a packet of Golden brand pikelets on the bench, the premade ones you buy from the supermarket, I joked to my partner that it was going to be his breakfast. I was then shocked to see that they actually did use these supermarket pikelets, and just warmed them up on the grill... We felt really ripped off, what restaurant or cafe doesn't make their own pancake batter??! You expect fresh food. Horrible experience and won't be going back.

Cool environment, average service, food pretty crap. I paid $32 for rolled pork belly stuffed with figs and cashews that was drenched in a dark sauce that resembled a blood clot, a dollop of dry coleslaw that had no dressing, and a pile of potato skin wedges that had no flavour at all. It was 'stuffed' with a wild mushroom, cashew & fig stuffing. The cashew and mushroom overpowered any taste of fig - had the fig been the star it would have been a lot nicer. The pork was cooked well but a little dry in places. The rest of the meal was cheap and lacked finesse. The hubby had fried chicken - it came with the same slaw & wedges. After he pretty much left it looking like a 6th form bio experiment in removing the dry batter the chicken was dry. Not going back.

Here's what the hubby has to say:

The missus summed this up very well - “Cool environment, average service, food pretty crap”.

She ordered the rolled pork belly and I the fried chicken. Both meals came with coleslaw and “hand-cut buffalo chips”. On both plates the ‘slaw was dry and undressed, and very little of it. The chips were wedge-shaped, and whilst giving the benefit of the doubt they bore a remarkable resemblance to frozen wedges from a supermarket. They too were unseasoned and bland.

Her pork was stuffed with a wild mushroom, cashew and fig stuffing, however she mentioned the fig could not be tasted over the other flavours. The pork was in places well cooked, and dry in others.

My chicken had been deep-fried and then put in a too hot oven for too long presumably to ensure the poultry was cooked through. Good plan, however what I got was dry, tasteless batter with chewy chicken inside. I tried removing the batter to get to the chicken but it just proved too difficult with bits flying everywhere and the mess left on the plate began to get embarrassing.

For the first time in living memory I left an eating establishment with food on my plate. Most of what came out would have gone back to the kitchen. The meals were very poor quality and lacked any finesse. $78.50 we’ve worked hard for that we’ll never see again.

Visited here for lunch today, 27 November 2014, with my wife.
We both had the sirloin steak with handcut fries and coleslaw. The steak and fries were very acceptable, but the coleslaw was disappointing. My wife is quite particular about her steak and commented positively on the meal. Our verdict is that we will visit again.
