Review Bar & Baa - Mangere

What a surprise secret gem, ordered the lamb shank and it was wonderful. The meat literally fell off the bone when you cut it. Juice, tasty and delicious. The service was friendly and welcoming. Music on point. A delightful experience. Victor our waiter made us feel like special guest. Great evening.

Good value for money but meals are nothing like the brochure! The seafood was overcooked and the veg were from the freezer. However the service was good. There were lots of customers because it's one of the only places nearby lots of cheap airport motels. The atmosphere is noisy but friendly.

Love this place, every time I'm around I eat there. Very good food, reasonable prices, very friendly staff. Try the mussels!

We had a wonderful experience. Quick polite service. I had a medium rear Scotch fillet cooked to perfection and the ambiance was lovely. Thank you the staff at The Bar & Baa

Nearly didn't go to this place due to the adverse comments. We were picked up from a local motel and dropped off - all complimentary. We were suspicious. It was a Friday night and lively. The staff were attentive and friendly. We ordered a 10oz fillet steak and a Greek chicken dish. Both excellent. We had 3 beers at NZ 7 and a bottle of wine for NZ30. Bill came to NZ102. This was quality food, with drinks at a good price. This is not a fancy place, so dress casually.

Always an amazing experience dining out here. The food is on point and the portion sizes are huge. Bobby is always so welcoming, provides great service and is always friendly with a smile. Oysters, steak, pork and coffee on the menu for us tonight - compliments to the chef. #Mangere 275

Food is amazing ate every last bite, glad we saved room for desert as the chocolate mousse is to die for! Honestly best hot chocolate Ive ever had - even with the coffee machine being down. On top of that very friendly and welcoming service, chill vibes - will definately be back again!

Fantastic food. Was picked up by courtesy van from Auckland Airport Lodge and delivered home again. Had Roasted Lamb with gravy and veges. Also mussels with chilli sauce and oysters. Beautiful. Excellent service too.

I picked up my colleague from the airport last night and the traffic heading back out West was at a standstill so rather than sitting in it we decided to find somewhere reasonable to eat. Didn't quite expect to find what we did. Really quite surprised at this wee hidden restaurant. Staff were nice and friendly and efficient and not overbearing (hang around like flies) like some waitresses/waiters do. Our meals were served promptly. No long wait for it. And the food!! Yummiest shank and mash. The meat just slid off the bone. It was absolutely delicious. My colleague had the steak and he commented several times on how it was cooked to perfection. You know it's good when he says it is. Was an enjoyable meal and a bit of quiet timeout from the traffic. Pleased to find that when we left the motorway was completely clear so made for a nice quick trip home. Will definitely be back now that we've found a great spot to wait out the traffic. Ngā mihi

Staying at Auckland Airport Lodge, hungry as! We grow our own beef so it’s always a bit of a risk ordering steak when away. Ordered the giant t bone steak meal medium rare to be delivered. Was really good, perfectly cooked, just onions, gravy, chips, 2 perfectly soft fried eggs and garlic bread ( done as a bun) was yummy. No veggies but a fantastic filling meal washed down with a beer. Thanks guys.

Staying right next door at The Naumi, seen steak & seafood, so we went to go and investigate.. prices looked good so we dined in. Excellent service all round. ordered 2 garlic breads, x2 Giant steak meals & x2 butter chicken meals..dinner for 4. Only $89 bonus. We would deffinatly go back. Good hearty feed. Not looking for fancy..Which it wasn't, but it was good tasty food for the price. I think it took about 10mins max..and we were served our meals. Short wait even with a full restaurant. Thanks

Went there with my brother and sister in law on Wednesday night. Greeted by a lovely man who was friendly and just a really cool guy with great hospitality service with a huge smile. I am not from Auckland but I know my brother loves this place.

Ordered at 5pm, food arrived at 6:38pm - were advised of a 20 minute wait (so not a good start). I don’t mind waiting for good food, good food takes time, but this was awful! Remarkably they did call at 5:58pm to say it would be another 10mins, but a large order had come in. I ordered “Herbed Seafood Salad” and being a restaurant with a lot of Greek food on the menu I was looking forward to some seafood, possibly grilled or pickled with herbs. Well Herbed Seafood Salad is basically seafood extender salad (you know, the type you get at your local supermarket from the deli section), with lashings of thousand island dressing with no herbs in sight. I did phone to check my order was correct, but was advised it has crab and therefore what is the problem? I’m sure there is a crab like substance in seafood extender, but I didn’t order a crab salad, I ordered a herbed seafood salad - he then said well there isn’t a description on the menu (true, that should have raised the alarm - but with 2 hungry kids, I just wanted to order)... anyway based on the title my expectation of Herbs and seafood was not met! They even tried to say there is a tiny bit of oregano - I would be amazed and think he was clutching at straws - anyway, if there was a “Tiny” amount of one herb - don’t call it Herbed - that is little more than a garnish, but I certainly could not see or taste any herbs (yes I tasted, but did not eat it, thousand island dressing is not to my liking)! We also ordered lemonade for the kids, by 8:40pm this still hadn’t arrived (I called 2 hours earlier) a so I have asked for a refund on my card... The kids ordered a fish, chicken and calamari platter and wedges with bacon - nothing special, just fried food bog standard. Daughter also had ice cream, which she ate without any complaints (can’t really get that one wrong). Anyway, I have been left very disappointed and certainly won’t be ordering from them again and would strongly advise against anyone else doing so.

Food was below par and over priced. Never going there again.

Had lunch here couple times. Favourite is the scotch filet meal! That peppercorn sauce is the sh*t 🔥 cheap lunch menu! check it out if you in the 275

Have been coming here for years, great friendly staff. Meals are enjoyable, atmosphere is the best. Highly recommended, either for a meal, or a few drinks to catch up with friends.

Sea food chowder!
Was amazing.. $12 pick up and serving size was more than expected my husband and I both satisfied we will defiantly be returning

The best things about this place is its close to the airport, the service is great, and the staff are happy to help.
The food is good quality and although the decor is still being updated, no matter as long as you have great company with alot to talk about, your experience will still be great

terrible. cold pasta noodles. cold veges.
cheap garlic bun (not bread) in hamburger bun which was tasteless and over priced. Do not go here. ate two fork fills and gave up. Not worth finishing.
Natasha DeWit
One of my favourite local places especially for lunch ! They have cheap lunch deals and the portion sizes are good. Waiting time is a tad long for food but well worth it.

Friendly staff, however food was tasteless and very over priced. Felt very ripped off. unless they replace their cooks, I won't be eating there again
Absolutely lovely, delicious food and very welcoming staff I very much enjoyed my time visiting this restaurant. I have recommend this restaurant to many of my friends simply because the food is so good.

Good Food - but food presentation needs to improved-We have ordered roast pork with rice- pork serving is quite generous -rice is almost nil - vegetable and salad seems to be prepared weeks ago except for the broccoli- My dining companions have ordered the pasta but not at all worth the price - The staff and service is awesome “very friendly and warm”

Yep topnotch, got convinced to come and dine into this restaurant, by the staff at the board. Was so impressed thought I would have to try this place out. We had the chicken Brest and Steak kebab total bill came to $21.80.
Been in Auckland (Airport Oaks )for a few days.Dined at four different places. The Bar and Baa is the best in the area.Fabulous Fashionable Dining, Very reasonably priced with Exceptional customer service.Their menu offers uncomplicated and innovative cuisine. Extremely friendly Young Manager with a wonderful sense of humour . Enjoyed every evening there. Would love to dine whenever I return to Airport Oaks

Partner and i decided to check out this place the other day. Place was busy but we still received friendly and fast service. Partner ordered the lamb racks and said it was great. I had the steak, which was cooked well and the sauce was soooo good. The plate was full of food so good portion sizes. I also had the calamari and this was the stand out. It is not an easy dish to cook and several other restuarants like lone star etc have over cooke and made it chewy, baa and bar did not. It was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing.
Great service and good pricing. Fully recommend.

Good food, Cheap piss think they have a local rate I noticed i was charged less the the young American next to me but hey I aint complaning. I had the beef stirfry with heaps of beef.
Good place to stumble accross

Churrr

Had the pleasure of dining here on our last night in Auckland. Ordered the chicken breast, while my wife ordered the seafood platter. Both dishes were outstanding, the chicken especially. Portion sizes were awesome, leaving us no room for dessert. Service was great and our waiter was super friendly - even offering to drive us back to our motel. Cannot recommend this place enough

I bought a two potatokeftedes meals which on the menu costs $10.90 each -

But I was stunned when I looked at total cost when I looked at the eftpos machine, So I asked the man at the counter: 'How much does the Potatokeftedes cost? He replies "For you, it costs $21.90 each because I make it in a large size". Now I want to mention firstly, that I've been to this restaurant before and I've bought the Potatokeftedes before so I was expecting a larger portion this time on my plate seeing as I paid $10 more per meal and $20 more as a total.

I finally received my meal... And was soooo disappointed! For $21.90 - I got 2 measly vege patties, 1 scoop of fries and a pointless little salad, no extras added, and no 'large size' as promised by the worker. Soo disappointed and I'm ringing the manager first thing tomorrow to complain about being overcharged for a meal that is supposed to be $10.90. TOTAL RIP OFF - I would not recommend this restaurant!!

Wow, so was just walking past this place and one of the friendly staff walked out to greet me as I was perusing the menu. To be honest had not intended to stop here for dinner, but he sold me on giving it a try. Ordered the Roast Pork to takeaway and had a cold Corona while I waited. The atmosphere was lovely and I had an enjoyable time waiting for my meal. I did order takeaway but there was a mix up and I was given an eat in meal. Best mix up ever. I didn't plan to dine in but the meal was absolutely delicious. I don't think I've ever had a better roast pork meal ever. The gravy was absolutely epic. Loved this place and plan to go back again for dinner very soon. Awesome!

I am a regular lunch diner here and absolutely love this place. The waiter is very charming and knows how to entice customers. It is very well priced, for lunch today i got a steak meal which included, two eggs, chips and salad I also ordered a red bull which came to a total of $18.20 or around about. The food is great and good sized portions. I enjoy the fast service. The place needs a bit of a rev up from the outside it appears dull and dark. Other then that would defs recommend to anyone looking for a nice quiet place for lunch.

We are locals and live 5mins away from this restaurant & decided to try it for once. Again like all other victims, we were welcomed into the place by a charming young man. Now I should've known the place wasn't right by the state of the tables and stains on the chairs. Nonetheless we scanned the menu drooling over the selections and images. (images I'm sure were taken from the Internet)
I decided on the giant t bone steak with onion rings, fried eggs and salad. We asked for a bottle of water and were given 3 dodgy looking glasses dumped onto our table.
The wait for the food was very long that we were beginning to get sleepy. Finally our food arrived. Plonked down in front of me was the t bone steak drowned in gravy and slices of onion 'rings', runny eggs with shredded cabbage and a slice of carrot as the salad. What a joke! My mother ordered the 'fresh' English fish with fries and my sister had calamari rings with squid both of which looked very under cooked and frankly horrible.
My steak was not well done as id ask and it was burnt. We struggled to finish the shitty food only because of the ridiculous pricing for our meals $27.90 for the t bone steak and $20 each for the seafood. What a total effing rip off! It would explain the lack of customers and the bad service we received. I have never had such horrible food till tonight, I wish we'd had the balls to walk out of there sooner! We had to stuff ourselves with chocolate afterwards just to drown the disgusting food we'd just digested ugh!
Moral of this place- you're much better off having kfc for dinner trust me- Never ever eat here!
Julian Smith
Easily the worst meal I have ever been served, no flavour or taste, overcooked vegetables and chicken. The meal was so hot it must have been heated in the microwave, garlic bread was two hamburger buns, service very slow, would never use this place. Again suggest you don't either
Ronnie Singh
Definitely a magical place, chicken breast amazing sauce. Service one of a kind, great job, really looking forward to coming back. My wife's calamari and the kids menu also looked really good. We need a place like this at home.

My worst ever meal in New Zealand. After 2 weeks in a third world country I thought some good Kiwi fare would hit the spot.
The garlic bread was on old hamburger buns, the fish was overcooked and drowned in the bland "Greek" sauce. It was accompanied by an odd bean mix, reheated potatoes, sad coleslaw and the only highlight, some al dente broccoli.
My partners "breast" chicken was a flattened schnitzel also drowned in sauce and the same awful vegetables.
We left after two bites and an argument with the owner who assured us of 19 years of happy customers. I see from this site that this is not the case.
Avoid.

Me and my sister stopped in their desperate for a steak and egg meal when we came across this place, it's a nice place, for a quiet meal. We ordered the Seafood chowder with garlic bread for our starter which was YYYUUUUMMMYYYYY, we were both no where near disappointed. We then ordered a a Kiwi steak (i think that's what it's called), the sauce on top of the steak OMG to die for. Chips were nice and crunchy, salad was nice. Overall our experience here was definitely a big A+ . Thank you!
Philip Stockdale
I had the lamb steak on mash potatoes with gravy on a cold winter night. Great meal really hit the spot and for a fair price. Service was good and atmosphere was nice. Went back the next day and had seafood bites. Calamari was brilliant/fresh and not the frozen rubbish, fish bites and chips were OK, was a started but I had for a main and filled me up.
They had my favourite Jack Daniels which was all I needed for desert.

Having received an advertising handout the night before, my wife and I decided to try this restaurant. It was near to the Hotel, and would make a change from Hotel food.
After a 45 minute wait, and following a reminder that we had waited rather a long time, my wife's food arrived. It was a rice and prawn dish. Four prawns on the plate, all with heads on. Two, heads only. It would have been a sad starter, we had ordered it as a main meal. My wife complained, the first time ever! We received considerable verbal abuse, and walked out.
Do not use this establishment.

If I had not been a guest of someone who had invited me to eat with them I would have sent my food back and left. I ordered roast pork which came on a bed of rice with hard roast potatoes, the sorriest, driest little salad I have ever seen and some unknown bean dish with a tomato based sauce. The brocoli was yellow. The pork did not taste fresh at all and I am actually a little worried. I was too embarrassed to say anything and so ate very little. I would think very carefully about eating here.

We went here the other day as it was the closest place to my friends motel. We waited a while to be served but they were obviously busy. We ordered battered scallops for starters, all 4 of the tiny things arrived rolling around a plate with old salad.
For mains we ordered sirloin steak but the waiter up sold us to scotch fillet, the photo on the menu looked great (I since realise these photos are off the internet one of a meal they do not sell was even Photoshopped with their logo). Our meals arrived and no scotch fillet to be seen. The steak looked like brazing steak and it was covered in peppercorn sauce, there is no way it could be cooked medium rare as ordered because it was so thin. The salad was old and looked like it was from a packet, the slice of carrot was pale, scaly, and rubbery it was bendable not snappable.
The best thing about this place other than leaving, was the front of house service, our waiter was very friendly if a little cheesy and car salesman like (by the sounds of other reviews this may have changed if we had complained).
Our main was $22-23. I would not recommend ever going here.

We had the misfortune of eating here on Wednesday 19th December 2012. My wife and I were looking at the Indian menu next door when a young guy came over and hard sold us his menu.

We ordered and our food came out. My wife received butter chicken so we asked what the dish was to be told butter chicken! We challenged and told we had ordered a different chicken dish to be told it was actually the same thing. The staff were very rude when we challenged it and basically did nothing.

When I went to pay I asked if we were still being charged for a dish that we did not order to be told yes! I challenged and the guy said if we had asked earlier they would have replaced it. When I asked about all of our dishes and eating separately he replied I would have taken them all away and cooked you all fresh dishes, as if!

We were then told we were wrong and the fact they had been there 19 years proved we were wrong. Looking at the other reviews on here, I don't think it is just us.

Please do not eat here!

We recently stayed at a motel during an overnighter in Auckland. On arrival we asked where we could get food. The only suggestion was to give us a photocopied menu for the Bar & Baa restaurant.

I was told if we phoned they would deliver.
It was cold, dark and wet and we had no vehicle so we took that option.
I had been sick before our flight from Melbourne and was still not feeling like eating much on the menu so narrowed it down quickly and then phoned the over through before 7pm.
I asked for an entree of lightly battered fish and julienned vegetables, wedges, tomato juice plus my husbands meal.

I was told it would be with us in 15minutes. We waited for over half an hour (which was okay but not what we were told) before a van arrived and our meal was delivered.
Unfortunately I had paid on the phone and I didn't check the meal before the driver left.
Upon opening I was horrified to see I had been sent caesar salad and not the fish entree.
I hate ceasar salad at the best of times, but my still sensitive stomach heaved when I opened the box.

I phoned the restaurant and told them of their mistake. He said he would see what he could do.
On checking my account I saw they had charged me for the salad which was more expensive than the fish.

I was phoned back a few minutes later and told that the driver had already gone home - yeah right!

I was so over it all I just hung up and let my husband eat the salad.

I would NOT use this restaurant again.

I am a big fan of the chicken breast, it has the best sauce and it is really addictive. However the owner is really really rude! I rang up to make an order, he assumed I was finished and hung up. I rang back to complete the order but after the ridiculous charge for extra sauce I refused to pay that amount as a result when I picked up my order, there was hardly any salad, fries, sauce and a small portion of chicken. I was charged $3.90 for chips, which is actually $3.50 when I asked him about this, he angrily gave me the 40cents and brushed me off. My friend questioned him on the size of the steak and in a sarcastic tone he replied "Look the meal is only $10.90 OK you can't expect a large portioned steak". Overall, I would love to give it a 5/5 based on the chicken breast meal that I love, but his rude/unwelcoming tone, attitude and bad customer service leaves me with a 2/5. This place needs someone else at the COUNTER!!

Recently visited Auckland and stayed in a motel near to this restaurant. Went in search of dinner and happened onto this place. The young fellah at the door extolled the virtues of the Greek chef, and knowing the Greeks can cook a bit decided to give it a go.
However it became quickly clear all the front of house staff were Indian, and were keen on up-selling everything. OK, that's business. When we had waited a fair while for the dinner to arrive, and watched people who had arrived after us eat and leave, I decided to check out the kitchen. Surprise, surprise the two Indians seemed more than a little disorganised, and not a Greek to be seen.
The food was terrible and I have given the toilet a good work out with an unsettled tummy. Would I recommend it, well I would recommend keep driving and find something decent to eat!!! Shocking experience.

Dine here on a regular basis, definitely a good spot for lunch, service is awesome and the bar owner and his son are very friendly and attentive.
The food is simple and tasty especially the "chicken and chippies" which is a beautiful chicken breast, with a minut side of salad and chips,I think the portion size lets the meal down, but overall a good place for a spot of lunch or drinks!
Crystal Johnson
Dine here on a regular basis as it is close to work and a nice get away for an hour during lunch.
Shane the owner is fantastic and we don't need to tell him what we are drinking nor what we are eating, he just comes out with our drinks and lets us know our meals have been taken care of.
Chicken Breast is the best meal by far with its orange liqueur and creamy garlic sauce.
Garlic bread is quite average I must say but you don't need it when enjoying a main as the meal sizes are usually quite good for the small price you pay.

The quantities of food served dropped recently but as soon as we took our opinions up with the manager we have seen a consistent improvement in meal portions since.
Food is usually consistent, sometimes the chips are a bit over cooked or the chicken breast is over cooked but 7/10 times its a very enjoyable experience.
Toni
I just called for info on menu prices and the owner hung up on me because he was "far too busy". I wont be eating there! That is terrible customer service, very disappointed!!!
Erin
Very highly recommend this place. Absolutely adore the chicken breast, try it once then you will be thinking about it till you have it again. Friendly staff, casual premises fun place. Very reasonable prices.
