Review Poppies Martinborough - Martinborough

Tayla Hearn
If you haven't been to Poppies, you need to go!! It is beautiful, the wines (especially the pinot gris and late harvest) are so delicious and the tastings are always very professional. The platters ($60) are gourmet and compliment the wine well. Wine tasting - $10 and redeemable on wine purchases.

This place was great and very helpful servers. They welcomed a bigger group for a tasting and we didn't feel like we had to have food which is fantastic. Cannot comment on menu as didn't eat. The room here everyone was gathered was super cute and has a nice rustic vibe. Top marks.

I visited Poppies Winery on a quiet winter's Tuesday with a friend and her family. We initially planned to visit another place, wanting something more than a platter. However, Poppies was the only winery open. While they mainly serve platters, we found them to be more substantial than expected. The service was decent, and their rosé caught our attention. A good stop if you're in the area.

Really don't think this place needs another review since it is wildly popular. Gorgeous view dining by the vineyards. Delicious platter. The only thing I felt was not great was the Potato Gratin in the platter. This was like chewing on cardboard. All of us had a bite and didn't finish that. But everything else was delicious.

Visited here with my Mum for a vegetarian platter and wine end of September 💕 Received lovely service and the platter was delicious. I loved the pinor noir wine 😊

Most popular place in Martinborough. There is no menu they do platters for the amount of people in your group and you can also choose from a selection of desserts and cheese. Great rose. Great service. You can also have a wine tasting before, during or after your platter. Booking is essential.

Always a popular spot for lunch and especially on a warm day when you can sit outside. They only serve antipasto type platters for the number of people and cater for all dietary requirements, but the platters are beautifully presented and ample food for lunch. We also got the artisan bread and the rose wine was divine. We sat inside the dining area at the back which was really busy. I noticed this room (also used as a wedding venue) had been renovated and the colours lightened up which looked beautful. They've also got these gorgeous velvet booth and long bench seats now which I hadn't seen there before. The service was really good and quick. You have to book certain seating times. Great vibe, friendly and great place!

Poppies was pretty crowded when we came in, but we did not have to wait long to do our tasting. All four wines we tried were outstanding and we took a bottle home with us. The person serving us was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines and the wine-making process. Would highly recommend stopping here on a wine tour of Martinborough!

An absolutely stunning place with plenty of vegan food and vegan wine options. The vegan platter was really good. Because the venue was a big hall it was very loud inside and the only other table option was in reception by the front door. Otherwise, great service and a nice hour or so out.

Elegant vineyard and restaurant with of country style design and decorations. It’s a nice place, not far from Wellington, to book for lunch and/or enjoy a wine tasting. The surroundings are stunning.

Really great place to visit while in Martinborough.
Poppies doesn't try to fake it as a fantastic restaurant but instead focuses on their stunning wine.
Poppies just serves the one dish, which is not really a dish but a platter. This is highly recommended though as there are some absolutely scrumptious food on the platter. Some of our favourites were the pork belly and the house smoked salmon.
With every platter comes a free wine tasting. Here one of the staff will talk you through the various wines and how they are created and what the history behind them are.
You can really taste the differences between the wines at Poppies even if you are just like me and not a wine conisoure. The pinot gris was just fantastic and their late harvest pinot gris was almost like a dessert wine.
Poppies only sell through their cellar door and do not supply any stores. Although their wine is quite expensive it does taste great and it is definitely worth taking a couple of bottles home for special occasions.
Poppies is a must visit when in Martinborough but you do need to book. It is a great place for a romantic lunch or family/celebration lunch and we will be back.

Food: 9/10
Staff: 10/10
Ambiance: 10/10
Wine: 10/10
Value: 9/10

Would I return: Absolutely!!!!

Poppies is a beautiful Martinborough winery known for its intimate wine tastings with winemaker Poppy Hammond and seasonal tasting platters. Their reputation is well deserved, with lovely hospitality in a stunning venue. The tasting platter works out at $22 per head (including bread) and features a delicious range of food items including rosé poached salmon, pork belly slices, olive tapenade, tiny marinated mushrooms, pumpkin hummus, medium rare beef strips, stuffed artichokes and peppers, olives, brie and crostini (among other things).

Vegetarians are also catered for on request and their platters reassembled to exclude meat products.

We started with the wine tasting which was accompanied by Poppie's (owner and namesake) beautiful commentary on the history and process of wine making. You can really feel her passion and dedication to her "babies". We followed this with the main platter which was absolutely delicious and the service was so friendly and accomodating (we didn't book but they went out of their way to gave us a table for 1 and 1/2 hours.) Loved it! Highly recommended!

From start to finish could not fault it. Perfection even down to the gorgouse bathrooms. Only one item on the menu but it is the best quality platters ive had. A must try is the late harvest riesling

A wonderful vineyard with a busy restaurant. We ordered the seasonal platter for two which were really delicious and good value. Will definitely revisit.

Popped for lunch and a wine tasting.

Poppy herself conducted the wine tasting and gave a fun, open honest description of the background and make up of each wine.

As our waitress informed us; Poppies is more a tasting room rather than a restaurant. So the menu is small.

We opted for the player for two, $40.00. We requested vegetarian which they do (by upping the amount of veg to replace the meat). We also ordered bread $2 each.

The platter was big and full of variety. Olive tapenade, artichoke, marinated mushrooms, humous, caramelised onions. The list went on.

I love eating this way. A big variety of different flavours and textures. It was thoroughly enjoyable. We also ordered a glass of white wine. I'm not a white wine fan mostly but their Riesling was beautiful. Sweet and crisp which accompanied the platter perfectly. My partner ordered the Pinot Gris and also thoroughly enjoyed it.

Staff were all friendly and helpful.

Just writing about the platter I'm getting hungry again!

I have tried several times to have lunch at Poppies but they were always full.

Arriving at 3.50pm we thought we might be too late to get served (they close at 4pm). But Poppie welcomed us with open arms. We were told we needed to order quickly because the kitchen was closing, but could stay as long as we liked.

The menu is limited to platters, but that only made the choice easier. We ordered the signature platter and were pleasantly surprised by the amount and selection of food provided.

Items like roast pork, stuffed vine leaves, artichokes, spanish tortilla and roast beef separates this platter from other platters in the area. I just didn't know where to start.

This is not fancy michelin star fair, but is honest, simple, and tasty food.

There was a limited wine selection as most varieties had sold out. This tells me the must have been good. However, the sauv blanc was a perfect pairing for the platter.

Though the sun was setting we were never rushed. We left full and satisfied.

Without a doubt, the best service in the Wairarapa. Staff and owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly. Lovely wine to compliment the platters. There is only one choice here, the fabulous platters but a few desserts to choose from. A very special experience.

The people were lovely here, very friendly. We had a wine tasting first followed by their famous platter. Everything was made on site, would have been nice to have a few hot things on there but minor criticism. Glass of rosé was the perfect match.

Went to the fabulous Poppies for the second time on Jan 2. Named after the owner, this place is a favorite in Martinborough. Poppy and Shane's philosophy is that of 'it's about our guests that are here now, not who is coming' and hence the service is personal, incredibly informative and friendly. Platters are generous with top ingredients, wines are sought after and delicious and the building is outfitted to perfection. Even the bathrooms are elegant. One tip...You must book in advance for dining in peak season as we watched several disappointed parties politely advised the whole day is booked up. Go to Poppies, we will be again for sure.

Lovely platters and very friendly, but not obtrusive service.
Shane, Poppy, and Pip go out of their way to ensure that you don't go wanting.
I know the Chardonnay was almost unavailable, and was one of the best we've tried although the $50 price tag would have been at the top end of the price range.
Lovely place and surroundings make this a top place to visit.

My partner and I LOVE Poppies. It is the best experience we have ever had at a vineyard. Poppy talks to you about her wine and is so engaged the entire time. Their tasting platter is absolutely amazing and the service is top notch. We would never miss a visit to Poppies when we are in Martinborough. Their Pinot Gris is amazing and all of their wines have a unique flair.

Just had another relaxing long lunch at Poppies. Poppy is an amazing winemaker and wonderful host. I sat inside with a friend, as it was overcast and blustery outside. We took over two big leather armchairs and ordered the platter and a bottle of Rose. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We were given a wine bucket to keep our wine chilled and the platter was perfect to nibble on as we sipped our wine. When I glanced at my watch I was shocked to see we had stayed for 4 hours and it was almost 5pm! Although their opening hours are 11 - 4pm, I often see guests still enjoying the late afternoon sun at 5.30! I am a Martinborough local and this is definitely my top pick for a relaxing afternoon with friends. The platter has also fed a group of 4 of us - it's a lovely way to eat when you have really come for the wine!

Nice platter and we enjoyed the wines we chose to have with it. On the other side of the ledger, the food was more expensive than at other places we visited over the week, and we were a little disappointed in the service. When we stopped by the previous day, we asked if we could book a table for lunch and were told that they don't take bookings. However if we came early, there would be no problem. We arrived early the next day, and sure enough there were plenty of tables. However we were told there were only one or two that we could have, both indoors. Parties arriving later had had the outdoor tables reserved for them. Perhaps only a small thing, but it did make us value those other places in the area that allowed us to book, or made us feel welcome.
