Review The Village Cafe & Bar - Martinborough

Under New Management and its a very positive change. Great food options and good range of tap and bottled beverages. And I believe they are getting back into live music on Saturday nights too ๐Ÿ˜€

Great place, loved the long tables and barn like setting, the soup was delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹

Wow what a busy cafe. Very popular with touring cyclists. Excellent service considering how busy they were. Coffee was yum & came promptly and our brunch was worth the wait. Delicious fresh produce, good value and beautifully presented. Hard to choose from such an interesting menu. I had the herbed potato cake...(with a side of bacon) delicious! Great range of fresh cakes & slices/biscuits. Wine/gift shop has excellent range with some exceptional glassware. Perfect shop for a wedding gift. Staff were friendly and efficient.

I loved the Eggs Benedict and my partner enjoyed the Croque Monsieur. I also really enjoyed coffee here. The service was also fantastic and the team were happy and friendly. We got our order really quickly too. I'll certainly be returning to this restaurant next time I'm in Martinborough soon!

After avoiding this place for the last 5 years (and regularly getting a kick out of reading their Google reviews on here), last week due to everywhere else being busy, I decided to give it another shot- so I had a coffee and some food. I was blown away by the level of service I received! The coffee was delicious, and made quickly, as was my food. Iโ€™m assuming new owners are running the place. Regardless, the young lady working was so lovely to me and my toddler. Iโ€™ll be coming back for sure.

I used The Village Cafe to cater dinners for our 3 day songwriting retreat. Grant was very flexible with our needs and schedule, delivering tasty dinners and tempting desserts for 13 hungry songwriters. The portions were extremely generous. Easy to work with, reliable and punctual, the fare was definitely an asset to our music making! Recommended.

Breakfast was much nicer than my previous visit. The food was well seasoned and the coffee was great. The space is awesome to work in as well. See you guys soon.

I'm here right now and eating some really great granola and yogurt, washing it down with a LARGE (and I mean large) sauvignon blanc. It's quiet but it's Monday so that's to be expected and frankly I'm enjoying the peace and quiet.

Lovely cafe with friendly staff, stopped here with my wife on our anniversary and staff gave us great service and food. Will definitely come back another time

The food was very good and friendly service too. The bathroom was a mess though and I hated their coffee cups, with handles too small to get my finger through.

Wow! The best Chocolate slice I've ever had! The service was amazing and our scrambled eggs on toast was delicious! I was so surprised when our food came out so quickly as it was a busy day with Martinborough Fair on and there were big queues everywhere! I felt very lucky. Thank you for making my brunch experience the best! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Under new management, The Village Cafe is absolutely fantastic. We have been here for brunch & lunch, and the food and service has been outstanding. The beef curry is to die for! Make sure you pop in on your next visit to Martinborough!

Awesome burgers so tasty and good! Patties were moist and not dry. Love the tomato relish ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ’•

Very average bacon sandwich. White bread not even slightly toasted, no butter. Serving staff just stared blankly off into space when I approached the counter, which was weird.

Quiet sunday brekkie with my husband . Plenty of space inside and out on seated tables or long shared bench tables.
Not a huge dietary special options but some , and noted all bread comes very well buttered something I forgot as I'm slightly dairy intolerant. My husband had the bacon sandwich which as mentioned in other comments is very buttery but he loved that.i had eggs on toast with bacon ,nice standard breakfast ,I would have liked the bacon to be real crisp but that's a personal preference. Staff were friendly and the coffee was nice and strong
Great space and ok for kids. Food hit and miss. Reuben and vegetarian Reuben good but needed pickles. Avocado stack below average, poached egg overdone. Quite expensive but at the same time seems to be the going rate around these parts. I would go back and try other things. Interesting and extensive menu

Came over from wellington to Martinborough for a couple of days and this was the first place we tried. The service was extremely polite. Tables were clean and the food delicious. We had the chicken burgers with fries (nothing too fancy) but it was one of the best tasting chicken burgers we have had.

First time here, I enjoyed my potato hash with two poached eggs with bacon. Eggs were cooked well. Partner had eggs on toast with bacon, tomato and avocado smash. He didn't like the avocado smash as the extra tomatoes he ordered was mashed with the avocado and it also had raw red onion (quite a bit of onion). He was hoping for just plain avocado smashed (avo, lemon juice, salt and pepper) with sliced tomato.

A group of friends had lunch there on a Sunday.ย I tried the advertised seafood pasta special for $21.50 and it was extremely disappointing.ย The dish lacked presentation, flavour and quantity and frankly for that price I expected much better quality.ย Very underwhelmed with the dish and the wait time for delivery.ย Can I recommend this cafe - no I think not.ย That will be the first and last time I frequent that cafe.

We ordered a bacon sandwich, corn beef hash and a Caesar salad with a side of fries. This was very costly for the ridiculously small portions we received. The sandwich was a HUGE let down hardly anything in it. $9.50 for two slices of bread and like two strips of bacon smothered in butter and sauce. So gross!! I do NOT recommend coming here. Staff beyond friendly.

We arrived with 6 adults, 4 children and 2 buggies. The space was perfect with enough room to leave the buggies, and space (and toys) for the younger children to play.ย
Only having a menu board was a bit of a hassle as we had to bring the children up with us so they could decided what they wanted and this blocked the way for the other customers. We ended up ordering pizza and chips to share between ourselves. It was nice to see that they had smoothies and meals that could be made children's size.

Shocking food, the bacon sandwich has such a large amount of butter it is uneatable, unfriendly staff, below average drinks, avoid if possible!
Food Mm
Very average food and very average staff and owner. Hard to get a smile from the staff. Not very welcoming at all. There is not a lot of choice for lunch in town, if there was I am sure this place would be empty.

Time for Sunday brunch! Went with a group of four and we all found the cafe very pretty and unique, it was like eating in a barn in a vineyard, gorgeous.

I ordered eggs your way with smoked salmon and hollandaise. The group had eggs with salmon and fish cake, and one eggs Montreal with spinach.

The salmon was given very generously on the plate and it tasted delicious. Fish cakes were spot on.
The ciabatta was over toasted and left burnt crust all over the sides for all mains.

Coffee was good. Really recommend the ice coffee.

Bustling village cafe. We went for breakfast which was a mistake as the breakfast menu is limited. Looked like they had a good range of baking on the counter - would recommend for morning or afternoon tea. Also had a great space for kids to play so great place to stop in for coffee with friends.

The atmosphere was a buzz and was super busy due to the jazz fest. But we were able to grab a seat to enjoy a lovely glass of wine during the last act.ย

AND ย the best caramel slice ever!! To die for

Cold and wet weather outside called for rolled pork belly with spiced red cabbage and mash. My extremities may have been a bit chilled but my innards were instantly warmed.

What a disappointment. My husband and I went in during the power cut (on the 5th of August)ย only to be ignored completely by the staff.
I'd understand if they had been unable to continue business due to the power cut, but it wouldn't have been beyond their abilities to say so to us, especially since we had just been driving and had no idea there WAS a power cut. Instead we had 2 people stand there in the kitchen smirking at us. Waited for a while, but eventually left.
I sent an email to this business on the 8th, outlining what had happened, again they didn't even acknowledge us. No reply, no apology, nothing.
Very, very poor. Would not go back. Would not recommend.

Went there to have lunch.

Very little by way of Gluten Free options, $1.60 for a child's fluffy was exorbitant. There were no options for diabetics by way of cold drinks apart from water or soda water, and the garden salad I ended up having to order for $6.50, filed a large drinjng cup and had a high proportion of onions and spring-onions. Overall a very disappointing eating experience.

Some lovely fresh baking first thing in the day, service average, lots of tables inside and out, but coffee really lets this place down. However as Emporio coffee beans always disappoint, this is not a surprise.

Coffee here is always sure to please. Food fresh and tasty . A great choice when visiting Martinborough .

First up, the service was surly, slow and delivered with a sneer. We waited for ages and saw people who arrived after us receive their meals- some the same that we had ordered. The coffee arrived luke warm and we didn't expect to pay $5 for a cappuccino that seemed a regular size. In fact we didnt know there were different sizes available as when we ordered coffee we were not asked if we wanted regular or large. My wife ordered mushrooms on toast...toast being the key word, What arrived was tiny mushrooms fried in something synthetic on fried bread that was burnt and rock hard. I ordered home smoked bacon on toast....again fried bread with very average bacon. There was no presentation involved...no relish on the side, or sauce of any type. Just greasy bacon on overcooked fried bread. Even our pre teen kids commented on their greasy toasted sandwiches. Yuck! We left feeling ripped off and sick. We will never go back there again.
