Review The Grill At Solway Park - Masterton

We had the Lamb Rack and Chicken Supreme both were so tasty just pricey. Otherwise the staff were amazing, very attentive.

Enjoyed an evening here for the Fleetwood Mac Experience recently. A cosy and fun evening. Band was awesome. Solway Park staff provided great bar service.

Steak was beautifully cooked. Came with creamy mash, garlic butter and fresh veggies. Absolutely yum! Well done Chef! Friend had the Salmon which also received raving reviews.

Food was good. Service friendly. Would have liked to have more soft drinks and milkshakes on the menu

Nice dinner. Not many veggie options. Wine list is extensive. Not busy on Friday early evening. Staff are friendly and helpful

High Tea at The Grill was very good. Plenty of variety savouries, sandwiches, scones and sweet treats. We had the bubbles as well. Tea was a little cold and weak but the rest was good. Shame there was only us there as it is certainly something different for a change

Our Christmas lunch was absolutely appalling and we said we would never return. However, we had had 4 good HiTeas last year, so ventured back and we were more than satisfied. The food was great and the service excellent. Caitlin? our server was delightful and nothing was too much trouble. We sent our compliments to the chef. Have just tried to make a booking for a large group of ladies for upcoming Mother's Day, and they have put the price of their High Tea up BY $8.50 😱😱😱😱To $32.....the price of a steak meal. AND they have reduced the contents. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮Greed has been their downfall. We are all going elsewhere.

So nice to go to a restaurant rather than cafe/ bistro. Really enjoyed the restaurant feel and some great food. Salmon was full of flavour,, succulent and cooked to perfection. Thanks to Kesha, our designated waitress, Service added to the experience, attentive, polite and friendly yet not in your face, A great dinner and evening had by all.

Just a bit disappointed this time around. The menu has been reduced quite significantly and the portion sizes have followed suit, but not by quite so much. The food was still good, and the atmosphere is still congusive to a relaxed and enjoyable meal with friends where one can talk quietly and be easily heard, but...

Delicious cocktails, super attentive and friendly waitstaff! Shared the aranchini, pork belly and the yummy soba noodle salad - we loved every bite! The chefs were working hard for a super busy seating and they did an amazing job. We shared the Pannacotta for dessert and it disappeared so quickly, we were amaze. All in all an amazing night :-)

Super yummy meals! We had the scotch fillet and lamb rack. Both extremely tasty and worth the price. Service was very friendly. Our waitress Keisha was nice and knew her stuff!

Have always enjoyed the dinner meals here but after staying at the hotel and going to the grill for breakfast not only was the food terrible, the girl who served us upon entering the grill was not only extremely patronising but just downright rude. Never returning again after this horrible experience

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at The Grill.
We had both breakfast and dinner, both of which were delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked, rare as requested. As well as the Salmon which was medium rare. The wine selection to go with the dinner was quite good, as it matched with both the beef and the salmon. We also had Calamari and a prawn cocktail which had a very good thousand island sauce, I only wish that there had been more!
I noticed in other reviews that people had food take a long time to come out. We had dinner on a Friday night at 7pm and had no issues.
For the most part, the staff were friendly and attentative(one of the staff seemed new).
The decor was very nice. The utensils and wine glasses were impeccably clean.
I would definitely recommend going there and look forward to going again.

We came to Masterton for a weekend away, upon arrival the reception advised us to book "as they're very busy tonight". Having a toddler we booked early, when we arrived we were promptly seated and provided menus and asked if we wanted drinks, so far so good. Being 6:30 pm it was hardly busy - two other couples and a single - and so we a little surprised that the mains took 40 mins - we were aware the chicken supreme I ordered would take 25 minutes and the only quicker option was the deep fried fish and chips which I was not going to order, although my husband did.

Anyway we know it was going to be impossible to entertain the toddler at the table so we went into the lounge area we had our drinks in there, read magazines and went for walks so it was ok. When our meals arrived my chicken was bone dry, the sauce was nice, thank god I could drown my chicken in it to at least be able to get some of it down. 'Grandmas broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce' had yellow broccoli and a watery (hardly call it cheese) sauce, the potatoe gratin was the best thing on my plate - I had also ordered a 'fresh garden salad' which consisted of limp lettuce and WAY too much onion which permeated through the other veges eg carrot and capscium so I might as well have been having a onion salad. The fish was fishy and the chips warm. Apparently they class themselves as fine dining or at least that's they way they charge - I won't be dining here again and I won't ever recommend it unless there are drastic changes to the menu and the cooking.

I did also let the wait staff know all of the above, I got a 10% discount, which was probably less than the cost of the side salad, whoopee!

I was looking forward to trying the Grill as I haven't been since they renovated a while back. When I booked I was told that a large party were expected that evening but if we came early they should be able to accommodate us. I booked for 6.30 and hoped that as they knew a large party was coming they would serve us quickly. We arrived 10 minutes early and the staff already looked under pressure. As other reviewers have noted we were seated next to other diners even though the large dining room was mainly empty. The tables next to us had young children, which was hardly conducive to a romantic meal, but I wasn't too worried. Our order was taken around 6.30 - we ordered only a main course but said to our waiter we would have a dessert if there was time as we hoped to catch a film after the meal. At 7.10 the waiter apologised for the delay and said our meal would be a further 10 minutes away. At 7.30 we still hadn't had the meal and so we decided to leave. The waiter was again apologetic and went off to get his supervisor who didn't appear.

I have noticed that another review mentioned being kept waiting with young children. I feel really sorry for the family next to us who were trying to keep their young children entertained, while presumably waiting for their meal. I noticed that they too left with doggy bags as another reviewer had been forced to.

What really go me though was that a young couple came in around 7pm and were served their starter within about 10 minutes.

With two young children we picked the earliest dining slot (6pm). We were staying at the hotel overnight and thought we would try the restaurant. Disappointing. We ordered Pan fried chicken, Flounder and from the childrens' menu sausages and chips for the kids. We didn't order any entrees so were a little surprised when our main took one and a half hours to come out to us. Our kids meal was bigger than the chicken meal, and the flounder was void of any herbs; with only three tiny shrimps on the plate. The chicken was also quite dry. My husband had a coke to drink, which was watered down and flat, very disappointing. As part of the children's meal deal they get a dessert, so we had a further half an hour wait for our table to be cleared to ask to make that take away, as by that time the children had had enough time sitting in a restaurant. Our waiter was apologetic about the delay, stating that they were very busy, but with the restaurant only half full, it didn't seem to stack up.

An exceptional and amazing place. Absolutely loved their dinner menu, food was outstanding, received a complimentary bottle of wine and staff and service was just excellent! They also make breakfast fit for champions!!! Pure elegance in it's finest form and will definitely be visiting again soon!

Having had an exquisite meal at this restaurant in July, I was really looking forward to eating here again on New Year's Eve. I ordered the fish of the day with baby potatoes and quinelle of scallop... my partner ordered the pork. I was extremely disappointed when my meal arrived. The fish was dry, the potatoes were enormous, dry and not peeled properly, and there was no quinelle of scallop. A very bland sauce accompanied this meal but had little or no seasoning in it. The staff sought an explanation from the chef as to the potatoes ... apparently a different delivery from their supplier ... fair enough had they been cooked in an appetising manner ... also the 'quinelle of scallop' was hunted down and placed in front of me ... two small circular rubbery moderately fishy tasting items the size of a 10 cent piece. My partner enjoyed his meal more although the pork too, was very dry. The staff were apologetic and we did get a small discount on the meal. I was told the head chef was on holiday and that the feedback would be passed on. There was a table of four adults adjacent to where we were sitting, who, on their departure commented to me that their meals were terrible also....a shame they did not give this feedback to the restaurant staff. It is such a shame that the calibre of food here has taken such a catastrophic dive as 6 months ago the food was devine... and at $36-$42 a main, one would expect only good quality food be allowed out of the kitchen

19.4.13 Have just had a superb dining experience back at the Solway Grill!! Thank you Jerry and your attentive staff for giving us a complimentary dinner for two in reparation for the below par dinner we had on New Year's Eve. The whole meal was absolutely delicious ... and the service was excellent. Much appreciated and we will definitely be back. :-)
We were not staying in house but dined at the grill on Friday the 8/6/2012. The wait staff were great, as they had a large dinner party entering the dining room at the time we arrived they offered to seat us or to have a drink in the bar until the larger party had ordered, we chose the bar option and did not regret it. We relaxed over a couple of drinks while the staff were still attentive to our needs, regularly checking with us as to whether we were ready to go through or not, we ended up ordering and eating our breads and dips in the lounge and the waitress also took our orders for our mains while we were still in the lounge bar. We were shown to our table a few minutes before our meals arrived, which were sublime. I had the lamb which was absolutely gorgeous and the other three in the party all had the 500g steak that they all really enjoyed.
The food was lovely and the staff couldn't have been any more friendly or accommodating. Well done, keep it up.

I reserved the "Moments to Treasure" package at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park. This package was supposed to include a "2 for 1 Dinner" special. However, the hotel staff would not honor this portion of the package, which tainted my entire stay.

Furthermore, the spa is barely large enough for two people, and the gym and indoor pool are both quite tiny.

Finally, it seems that about half of the rooms (the ones with "bad" views) have parking, and the other half have to park close to reception.

Had deceptive advertising not been employed get us here, I might have rated this place better. However, when a place outright lies to me in order to get my business, as this establishment did, I cannot be happy about it. Thus, I would advise staying elsewhere.

We had booked to stay at the Solway (pre return of the child from school holidays trip) and had decided beforehand that we would eat at the resident restaurant.

Solway has changed a lot since the last time I was there, its been ungraded considerably, which is great because it was a dive previously.

Upon checking in we were told to book as they get very busy, only to arrive at the restaurant that evening to find 2 other couples. Hardly brimming to capacity, but based on our earlier experience of the Cafe Solway I wasn't going to argue with them.

We both had the seafood chowder for an entree, and I was impressed. Its has quite a few chunky its of seafood including discovering a whole scallop - which was a pleasant surprise.

After being told there was no salmon or lamb, it left few options on the menu, so surprisingly I opted for steak. I prefer my steak pink but not bleeding, but often find its quite often done wrong. The sirloin at The Grill is a nice big piece of steak, but was way overdone. Probably my fault because I asked for well done. But it wasnt just well done, but overdone to the point of being dry. But I do accept my part in that.

Other groups and couples came in to dine as we sat and ate. The thing we noticed was that despite the size of the restaurant, which is relatively big, we were all being seated in the same area and relatively close together. Good for the staff I suppose to manage patrons, but it makes it hard to talk about evryone else when you're sitting so close to them.

Overall, I didnt think it was bad. Bonus points for the chowder! Staff were friendly, courteous and quick to help out if needed.
